ABSTRACT Overcoming malnutrition in all its forms, which is also manifested in the obesity epidemic, is one of the priorities of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. This article presents reflections on food insecurity in Brazil, based on topics such as population growth, climate change, biodiversity and traditional and regenerative food systems; it also addresses the role of social initiatives to guarantee the Human Right to Adequate Food. The Nutrition and Poverty Research Group, Planetary Health - Brazil Group, and the Center for Artificial Intelligence (C4AI) - AgriBio Axis, assume that the organized and systemic resumption of the initiatives mentioned out in this position paper can contribute to the articulation between research, public policies and services, to combat all forms of malnutrition, as a complex and priority problem to ensure social welfare.

RESUMO O combate à má alimentação em todas as suas formas, que também se expressa na epidemia da obesidade, é uma das prioridades da Agenda 2030 e dos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável. Este artigo traz elementos sobre insegurança alimentar no Brasil, a partir de temas relativos ao crescimento populacional, mudanças climáticas, biodiversidade e sistemas alimentares tradicionais e regenerativos; trata também do papel dos movimentos sociais para a garantia do Direito Humano à Alimentação Adequada. O Grupo de Pesquisa em Nutrição e Pobreza, o Saúde Planetária Brasil, e o Centro de Inteligência Artificial (C4AI) - Eixo AgriBio, entendem que a retomada organizada e sistêmica das frentes apontadas neste artigo de posicionamento, pode constituir um caminho para a articulação entre pesquisa, serviço e políticas públicas na direção do combate à fome e às demais manifestações da má alimentação, enquanto problema complexo prioritário para a garantia do bem-estar social.

Abstract Interactions between plant and pollinators are associated with the origin and maintenance of species diversity, as well as ecosystem functioning. The potential of pollination as an ecosystem service is evidenced by its association with food production. Understanding pollination at the landscape scale is essential for characterizing the pollination service for several crops that depend on pollinators for fruit and seed set that make up the human diet. Our aim was to carry out a literature review of studies and projects funded by BIOTA/FAPESP to illustrate the main research approaches developed in the field of Pollination Biology, especially related to plant-pollinator interactions. Plant-pollinator interactions in the Atlantic forest were leveraged as a result of this long-term research program, during which several papers were published in international journals. Pollination by bees (melittophily) was the most representative pollination system studied. In addition to melittophily, other interactions were studied such as pollination by hawkmoths (sphingophily), by hummingbirds (ornithophily) and by bats (chiropterophily). The specific mutualistic relationships between fig trees and fig wasps were also subject of studies within the Program. At the beginning of the BIOTA/FAPESP Program, there were many gaps in basic information about pollination and breeding systems of Brazilian native plant species. Thus, the Program was fundamental to fuel research on the natural history of plants and pollinators from the Atlantic forest. Overall, the Program funded studies that investigated themes such as functional pollination ecology, pollinator effectiveness, plant population genetics, structure and dynamics of plant-pollinator interaction networks, as well as geographic distribution and macroevolution of pollination systems, as well as genetic and molecular studies of native plant populations focusing on pollen flow and genetic structure of populations. Additionally, studies on pollination in the context of landscape ecology had the aim of assessing the effects of forest fragmentation on the functioning of plant populations and their interactions with pollinators and the relationships between landscape structure and ecological processes, biodiversity, and ecosystem service. Therefore, the Program had a prominent role in producing basic data with great implications for understanding the ecology and promoting the conservation of plant-pollinator interactions.

Resumo A interação planta-polinizador está associada à origem e manutenção da diversidade de espécies de plantas e ao funcionamento dos ecossistemas. O potencial da polinização como serviço ecossistêmico é destacado quando associado à produção de alimentos. Compreender esta interação na escala da paisagem é essencial para caracterizar o serviço de polinização para muitos cultivos que dependem dos polinizadores para a formação de frutos e sementes que integram a dieta humana. O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar uma revisão bibliográfica de estudos e projetos financiados pelo BIOTA/FAPESP para ilustrar as principais abordagens de pesquisa desenvolvidas no campo da Biologia da Polinização, especialmente relacionadas à interação planta-polinizador. As interações planta-polinizador na Mata Atlântica foram alavancadas como resultado desse programa de pesquisa de longo prazo, durante o qual vários artigos foram publicados em revistas internacionais. A polinização por abelhas (melitofilia) foi o sistema de polinização mais representativo estudado. Além da melitofilia, outras interações foram estudadas, como a polinização por mariposas (esfingofilia), por beija-flores (ornitofilia) e por morcegos (quiropterofilia). As relações mutualísticas específicas entre figueiras e vespas do figo também foram objeto de estudos no âmbito do Programa. No início do Programa BIOTA/FAPESP, havia muitas lacunas sobre informações básicas sobre polinização e sistemas de reprodução de espécies vegetais nativas brasileiras. Assim, o Programa foi fundamental para desenvolver pesquisas sobre a história natural de plantas e polinizadores da Mata Atlântica. No geral, o Programa financiou estudos que investigaram temas como ecologia funcional da polinização, eficácia de polinizadores, genética de populações de plantas, estrutura e dinâmica de redes de interação planta-polinizador, bem como distribuição geográfica e macroevolução dos sistemas de polinização, além de estudos genéticos e moleculares de populações de plantas nativas com foco no fluxo de pólen. Adicionalmente, estudos sobre polinização no contexto da ecologia da paisagem tiveram como objetivo avaliar os efeitos da fragmentação florestal no funcionamento das populações de plantas e suas interações com os polinizadores e as relações entre a estrutura da paisagem e os processos ecológicos, biodiversidade e serviços ecossistêmicos. Portanto, o Programa teve um papel de destaque na produção de dados básicos com grandes implicações para o entendimento da ecologia e promoção da conservação das interações planta-polinizador.

Resumo O sucesso reprodutivo das plantas pode estar relacionado a diversos fatores. Dessa forma, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar os diferentes morfos florais apresentados por Solanum melongena (híbrido Nápoli) no contexto da biologia reprodutiva e da polinização. O estudo foi realizado em Estiva Gerbi, São Paulo. Os dados de morfometria floral foram coletados com auxílio de paquímetro manual e estereomicroscópio. Para determinar o sistema reprodutivo, verificou-se a formação de tubos polínicos em diferentes horários após a polinização manual ser efetuada. Realizou-se a caracterização dos visitantes florais através de observações de campo e calculou-se a frequência dos mesmos. Constatou-se diferença significativa entre o tamanho das corolas e dos estiletes dos diferentes morfos, não diferindo entre si apenas as anteras. Quanto aos sistemas reprodutivo e sexual, detectou-se que S. melongena é uma espécie xenógama facultativa, assim como apresenta o fenômeno da andromonoicia, no qual as flores de estilete curto apresentam apenas a função masculina funcional. Conclui-se para S. melongena que ambos os morfos contribuem para seu sucesso reprodutivo, assim como a ação dos polinizadores, pois embora apresente certo grau de autocompatibilidade, a autopolinização não mostrou-se suficiente para uma efetiva fecundação de seus óvulos como quando na ocorrência da polinização cruzada.

Abstract The reproductive success of plants may be related to several factors. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the different floral morphs presented by Solanum melongena in the context of reproductive biology and pollination. The study was conducted in Estiva Gerbi, São Paulo. Data on floral morphometry were collected with the aid of a manual caliper and stereomicroscope. To determine the reproductive system, the formation of pollen tubes at different times after manual pollination was observed. The characterization of floral visitors was conducted through field observations, and the frequency of their visits was calculated. There was a significant difference in size between the corollas and styles from different morphs, while only the anthers did not differ significantly. Regarding the sexual and reproductive systems, it was found that S. melongena is a facultative xenogamous species, and presents the andromonoecy phenomenon in which short-styled flowers are only functionally male. The conclusions were that, for S. melongena (hybrid Napoli), both of its floral morphs, as well as the action of its pollinators, contribute to the reproductive success of this species, as, even though it has a certain degree of self-compatibility, self-pollination was not sufficient for a fertilization of ovules as efficient as the one in cross-pollination.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo florístico e fenológico das plantas ornamentais arbóreas e arbustivas, visitadas por abelhas no campus da Universidade Estadual de Campinas, São Paulo. Os registros sobre as plantas foram feitos de maio de 1999 a abril de 2000, obtendo-se 42 espécies de plantas. Cerca de 43% apresentou pico de floração no período úmido, 33% no período seco e 24% em ambos os períodos, não havendo sazonalidade marcada. A maioria das espécies, cerca de 72%, apresentou padrão de floração anual. As famílias mais representativas foram Leguminosae e Bombacaceae com 13 e 5 espécies respectivamente. Dentre as espécies estudadas predominaram flores brancas e o tipo floral aberto. As observações sobre as abelhas que visitavam as flores foram feitas de maio de 2000 a fevereiro de 2001, tendo sido registradas 17 espécies de abelhas. Essas abelhas podiam realizar visitas legítimas e/ou ilegítimas às flores. Os recursos utilizados pelas abelhas foram, principalmente, pólen e néctar e, na maioria das espécies de plantas, ambas as substâncias foram utilizadas. Apis mellifera, Trigona spinipes e Tetragonisca angustula, abelhas consideradas generalistas e Xylocopa frontalis e Bombus morio, consideradas mais especializadas, foram as cinco espécies que visitaram as flores de maior quantidade de espécies de plantas. Essas informações podem ser úteis para a elaboração de planos de manejo em ambientes urbanos visando à utilização de plantas ornamentais adequadas para atender maior diversidade de abelhas.

A floristic and phenological study of ornamental, arboreal and shrubby species visited by bees was carried out on the campus of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, São Paulo. Data on the species were recorded from May 1999 to April 2000. During this period 42 flowering species in flower were evaluated, of these 43% flowered in the wet season, 33% in the dry season and 24% in both seasons, without marked seasonality. Most of the species, about 72%, presented an annual phenological pattern. Leguminosae and Bombacaceae were the richest abundant families (13 and 5 species, respectively). Most of the species studied had white or dish-shaped flowers. A total of 17 bee species were recorded visiting flowers, from May 2000 to April 2001. Visits to flowers could be legitimate or illegitimate. Pollen and nectar were the only resources exploited by the bees. The generalist species Apis mellifera, Trigona spinipes and Tetragonisca angustula, and the more specialized species Xylocopa frontalis and Bombus morio, were the most common in the area, and visited the majority of the plant species. These data may be useful in future plans for management of urban environments, using appropriate ornamental plants, to encourage a diversity of bee species.
