Abstract Background: Latin America has registered cases in children under 14 years of age, which seem few compared to older age groups but are relevant since the child and youth population have been indirectly receiving the most decisive impact of the pandemic. Ensuring the most significant protection for this age group is essential. Methods: This is an ecological study of 10 Latin American and the Caribbean countries to study protecting children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the information from UNICEF, a coverage analysis was done, and a new variable score was proposed. Also, a multiple linear regression model was tailored to evaluate the relationship between confirmed cases by 100k of COVID-19 (0-14 year population) and the performance of the countries and some key indicators. Results: A strong and statistically significant correlation (r = 0.79; p value 0.005) between the increased coverage of child helplines and a greater number of school closures. Relationship of confirmed cases by COVID-19 and stringency index with a coef B = −2163.6, [CI −3122.1; −1205.1]; p value = 0.010. Cases and healthcare access with a coef B = −17459.7, [CI −25630.1; −9289.5]. Conclusions: Experts say other pandemics will come, and this emergency must be turned into an opportunity. It is vital to strengthen protection programs for the population, especially vulnerable people, such as children and young people.

Resumo Contexto: A América Latina registou casos em crianças menores de 14 anos, que parecem poucos em comparação com os grupos etários mais velhos, mas que são relevantes uma vez que a população infantil e juvenil tem vindo a receber indiretamente o impacto mais decisivo da pandemia. Assegurar a proteção mais significativa para este grupo etário é essencial. Métodos: Este é um estudo ecológico de 10 países da América Latina e das Caraíbas para estudar a proteção de crianças e adolescentes durante a pandemia da COVID-19. Utilizando a informação da UNICEF, foi feita uma análise de cobertura e foi proposta uma nova pontuação variável. Além disso, foi adequado um modelo de regressão linear múltipla para avaliar a relação entre casos confirmados por 100k de COVID-19 (0 a 14 anos de população) e o desempenho dos países e alguns indicadores chave. Resultados: Uma correlação forte e estatisticamente significativa (r = 0,79; p-valor 0.005) entre o aumento da cobertura das linhas de ajuda às crianças e um maior número de encerramentos de escolas. Relação de casos confirmados pela COVID-19 e índice de rigueur com um coeficiente B = −2163,6, [CI −3122,1; −1205,1]; p-valor = 0.010. Casos e acesso aos cuidados de saúde com um coeficiente B = −17459.7, [CI −25630.1; −9289.5]. Conclusões: Os peritos dizem que outras pandemias virão e esta emergência deve ser transformada numa oportunidade. É vital reforçar os programas de proteção para a população, especialmente as pessoas vulneráveis, tais como crianças e jovens.

Abstract Background: The COVID-19 pandemic may affect youth’s physical and mental well-being, partially because of the countries’ rules to contain the virus from spreading. However, there is still uncertainty about the impact of physical distancing on youth’s mental health. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of feeling agitated, anxious, down, sad, or low mood (FNF) due to physical distance measures and verify which factors are associated with young Portuguese and Brazilian people. Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the instrument “COVID-19 Barometer: Social Opinion” in Portugal (March 2020 and September 2021) and from “COVID-19 Social Thermometer” in Brazil (August 2020 to April 2021); these surveys included data regarding the health and socioeconomic impact on the population. The health and sociodemographic variables of the two countries were summarized as absolute and relative frequencies. A multivariable logistic regression model was fit by country to estimate the relation between FNF and selected variables of interest. Results: Approximately 36% of the sample studied reported anxiety, agitation, sadness, or low mood almost every day in Portugal and 52% in Brazil due to physical distancing. In Portugal, having more than two comorbidities represented a greater chance of experiencing FNF every day or almost every day (odds ratio [OR] = 1.51 [CI: 1.22-1.87]) than those without comorbidities. In contrast, having a university education level represented a protector factor (OR = 0.76 [CI: 0.67-0.88]). In Brazil, being unemployed increased the chance of FNF compared to students (OR = 11.2). Conclusions: Physical distancing measures have impacted the mental well-being of the young population in Portugal and Brazil. The countries must make a quick effort to attend to and protect young people’s well-being and mental health in the changing context of the current pandemic.

Resumo Introdução: A pandemia do COVID-19 pode afetar o bem-estar físico e mental dos jovens, em parte por causa das regras dos países para conter a propagação do vírus. No entanto, ainda há incerteza sobre o impacto do distanciamento físico na saúde mental dos jovens. Objetivou-se estimar a prevalência de sentir-se agitado, ansioso, deprimido ou triste (FNF) devido a medidas de distância física e verificar quais fatores estão associados a jovens portugueses e brasileiros. Métodos: Utilizamos dados transversais do instrumento “COVID-19 Barômetro: Social Opinião” em Portugal (março de 2020 até setembro de 2021) e do “COVID-19 Social termômetro” no Brasil (agosto de 2020 até abril de 2021); essas pesquisas incluíram dados sobre o impacto na saúde e socioeconômicos da população. As variáveis de saúde e sociodemográficas dos dois países foram resumidas em frequências absolutas e relativas. Um modelo de regressão logística multivariável foi ajustado por país para estimar a relação entre a frequência de sentimentos negativos (FNF) e variáveis selecionadas de interesse. Resultados: Aproximadamente 36% da amostra estudada relatou ansiedade, agitação, tristeza ou mau humor; quase todos os dias em Portugal e 52% no Brasil devido ao distanciamento físico. Em Portugal, ter mais de duas comorbidades representou maior chance de apresentar FNF todos os dias ou quase todos os dias (OR = 1,51 [IC 1,22 -1,87]) do que aqueles sem comorbidades. Em contrapartida, ter nível universitário representou fator protetor (OR = 0,76 [IC 0,67-0,88]). No Brasil, estar desempregado aumentou a chance de FNF em relação aos estudantes (OR = 11,2). Conclusões: As medidas de distanciamento físico têm impactado o bem-estar mental da população jovem em Portugal e no Brasil. Os países devem fazer um esforço rápido para atender e proteger o bem-estar e a saúde mental dos jovens no contexto de mudança da atual pandemia.

This paper presents an up-to-date review of the evidence indicating that atypical neurotransmitters such as nitric oxide (NO) and endocannabinoids (eCBs) play an important role in the regulation of aversive responses in the periaqueductal gray (PAG). Among the results supporting this role, several studies have shown that inhibitors of neuronal NO synthase or cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) receptor agonists cause clear anxiolytic responses when injected into this region. The nitrergic and eCB systems can regulate the activity of classical neurotransmitters such as glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) that control PAG activity. We propose that they exert a ‘fine-tuning’ regulatory control of defensive responses in this area. This control, however, is probably complex, which may explain the usually bell-shaped dose-response curves observed with drugs that act on NO- or CB1-mediated neurotransmission. Even if the mechanisms responsible for this complex interaction are still poorly understood, they are beginning to be recognized. For example, activation of transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 channel (TRPV1) receptors by anandamide seems to counteract the anxiolytic effects induced by CB1 receptor activation caused by this compound. Further studies, however, are needed to identify other mechanisms responsible for this fine-tuning effect.

O efeito dos extratos de sementes de nim e do extrato de sementes concentrado (NSC) foi avaliado na mortalidade e desenvolvimento de Heterodera glycines. A mortalidade de juvenis de segundo estádio (J2) foi avaliada na presença dos extratos de sementes (aquosos, metanólicos e hexânicos) e NCS in vitro. Em casa de vegetação, o número de fêmeas e de ovos por sistema radicular foi determinado 30 dias após a inoculação de plantas de soja com J2 tratados com os extratos de sementes. Os extratos hexânicos foram ineficientes em matar os J2, conquanto nenhuma diferença estatística (P>0.05) foi observada entre as doses estudadas e a testemunha. Os extratos aquosos e o metanólico a 1000 mg L-1 causaram a morte de pelo menos 98% dos J2, mas não houve diferença significativa entre estes tratamentos. A mortalidade dos J2 tratados com NSC cresceu exponencialmente com o aumento das doses (R²=0.94). O LD50 do NSC sobre J2 de H. glycines foi de 42.6 mg L-1. Em casa de vegetação, as maiores reduções no número de fêmeas, 84%, foram obtidas com o extrato aquoso (41.6 mg L-1) e metanólico (1000 mg L-1). Da mesma forma, as maiores reduções no número de ovos, cerca de 90%, foram obtidas com os mesmos extratos. Considerou-se que o uso do extrato aquoso em condições de campo é mais apropriado que os demais extratos. As atividades do extrato metanólico e do NSC foram atribuídas a sete tetranortriterpenóides (azadiractina H, azadiractina A, azadiractina B, desacetilnimbim, desacetilsalanim, nimbim and salanim) que foram identificados por cromatografia líquida de alta performance de fase reversa.

The effect produced by neem seed extracts and a neem seed concentrate (NSC) on the mortality and development of Heterodera glycines was evaluated. Second-stage juvenile (J2) mortality produced by the extracts and NSC was determined. Soybean seedlings treated with each of the extracts (aqueous, methanolic and hexane) were inoculated with J2 and the number of females and eggs per root system determined after 30 days. Both the hexane extracts were ineffective as no statistical difference (P>0.05) in J2 mortality was observed between them and the control. No statistical difference (P>0.05) in J2 mortality (>98%) was obtained between the water extracts and methanol extract at 1000 mg L-1 treatments. The J2 percentage of mortality exponentially increased with the NSC dosages (R²=0.94). LD50 was 42.6 mg L-1 for NSC on H. glycines. In the greenhouse experiment, the highest reduction in the number of females was 84%, obtained with the aqueous (41.6 mg L-1) and methanolic extracts (1000 mg L-1). In the same way, the highest reduction in the number of eggs, of about 90%, was obtained with the same extracts. Thus, using aqueous extracts is more suitable than the remaining extracts in field conditions. The activities of the methanol and NSC extracts were attributed to the seven tetranortritepenoids (azadirachtin H, azadirachtin A, azadirachtin B, desacetylnimbin, desacetylsalannin, nimbin and salannin) identified by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography.
