RESUMO A miopatia nutricional é uma doença degenerativa que pode afetar os músculos esqueléticos e cardíaco, causada pela deficiência dietética de selênio e/ou vitamina E. Objetivou-se relatar a ocorrência de miopatia nutricional em dois potros Puro Sangue Inglês, criados de forma extensiva, com baixa disponibilidade de forragem e sem suplementação mineral. De um lote de nove animais de diferentes idades (cinco éguas adultas, uma potra lactente de três meses,uma mula e dois potros de 16 e 17 meses), apenas os dois últimos foram afetados. Clinicamente, havia decúbito lateral ou esternal, taquicardia, taquipneia, desidratação e dor à palpação muscular na região dos glúteos.O diagnóstico presuntivo de miopatia nutricional foi realizado por meio da associação dos sinais clínicos aos dados epidemiológicos.O animal 1 foi eutanasiado cinco dias após o atendimento devido à piora gradativa do quadro, e o animal 2 recuperou-se com o tratamento adotado. O diagnóstico foi confirmado com base nos exames complementares, nos achados de necropsia e na dosagem da concentração hepática de selênio. Este relato de caso alerta para o risco da ocorrência de miopatia nutricional em equinos, sobretudo jovens, sem acesso a pastagens ou feno de boa qualidade e sem suplementação mineral adequada.

ABSTRACT Nutritional myopathy is a degenerative disease caused by the dietary deficiency of selenium and/or vitamin E that can affect skeletal and cardiac muscles. The objective of this study was to report the occurrence of nutritional myopathy in two Thoroughbred young horses, raised in pastures with low forage availability and no mineral supplementation. From a herd of nine animals of different ages (five adult mares, one three-month-old nursing foal, one mule and two 16- and 17-month-old horses), only the last two were affected. Clinical signs were lateral or sternal recumbency, tachycardia, tachypnea, dehydration and muscle pain. Presumptive diagnosis of nutritional myopathy was made associating clinical signs and epidemiological data. Animal 1 was euthanized five days after the first evaluation due to clinical signs gets worse, and animal 2 recovered with the established treatment. Diagnosis was confirmed with complementary exams, necropsy findings and levels of hepatic selenium. This paper alerts to the risk of nutritional myopathy occurrence in horses, mainly young animals, which are not ingesting good quality hay or green forage and do not receive appropriate mineral supplementation.

RESUMO As preguiças são mamíferos arborícolas, bem específicos quanto aos hábitos e à morfofisiologia. Essa condição faz delas ainda mais vulneráveis aos impactos ambientais. Com o objetivo de fornecer informações que auxiliem na clínica médico-cirúrgica desses Xenarthras, realizou-se um estudo do arco aórtico e da artéria aorta torácica, a fim de se identificarem seus principais ramos. Foram utilizados 10 animais da espécie Bradypus variegatus, sendo uma fêmea e três machos submetidos a dissecação, por meio da qual foram obtidas medidas de diâmetro e comprimento dos vasos, enquanto três fêmeas e três machos destinaram-se à técnica de radiografia digital com contraste. Constatou-se uma sintopia uniforme do arco, bem como da porção descendente da artéria aorta no tórax. No entanto, a topografia difere consideravelmente. Com base nos ramos, percebeu-se, independentemente do sexo, uma maior variação naqueles originados do arco e dos que emergem da artéria aorta torácica e irrigam estruturas medianas e do antímero direito do tórax. Foram obtidos valores maiores para o diâmetro das artérias na fêmea do que nos machos e, para o comprimento da artéria aorta torácica, foram encontrados valores correspondentes em ambos. Toda essa variação dos bradipodídeos apresenta diferenças em relação a outros mamíferos.

ABSTRACT Sloths are arboreal mammals, very specific, regarding their habits and morphology. This condition makes them even more vulnerable to environmental impacts. In order to provide information to assist in the medical and surgical assistance to these Xenarthras, a study of the aortic arch and thoracic portion of the descending aorta was carried out with the purpose of identify its main branches. Ten animals of the Bradypus variegatus species were used. One female and three males were submitted to dissection, where measurements of vessel diameter and length were obtained, while three females and three males were submitted to the digital contrast x-ray technique. There was a uniform syntopy of the arch, as well as of the descending portion of the aorta in the thorax. However, the topography differs considerably. Based on the branches, regardless of gender, a greater variation was observed in those originating from the arch, and those that emerge from the thoracic aorta and irrigate medial structures and the right antimere of the thorax. Greater values were obtained for the diameter of the arteries in the female than in the males and corresponding values for the length of the thoracic aorta in both. All this variation is possibly related to the adaptive processes of Bradipodidae over time.

ABSTRACT The dichloromethane extract of Plectranthus ornatus Codd., a tradicional medicinal plant, showed antibiotic activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.4 mg.mL-1 and 100 percent of biofilm inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from animals with mastitis infections. Based on these antibacterial activities, in addition to ethnopharmacological reports from healing men and farmers in Brazil, an herbal soap was produced from this active extract and was tested both in vitro and in vivo. In vivo assays conducted on these herbal soaps led to results similar to those previously conducted with the active extract. These results indicated the great potential of this plant for use as an excipient by preparing herbal antibacterial soaps as an alternative veterinary medicine aimed at controlling bovine mastitis infections on small Brazilian farms.

ABSTRACT This paper reports the in vitro trypanocidal activity evaluation of new carbohydrazide derivatives from 3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine, substituted at C-6 position by phenyl, methyl or trifluoromethyl group. These compounds were evaluated in order to identify the antiparasitic profile against trypomastigote and amastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi. The 4-carbohydrazide derivatives presented different profiles of activity. In the investigation of the chemical structure influence in the trypanocidal activity, the results indicated there are large lipophilicity and volume differences among these derivatives. The complementarities of their stereoelectronic and physical-chemical aspects seem to be relevant for the biological activity against T. cruzi.

RESUMO A resistência de fungos do gênero Candida aos fármacos químicos tem lançado o desafio de se identificar novas substâncias que possuam atividade antibiótica ou venham a modular o efeito de produtos atualmente usados contra candidíase. O presente estudo avaliou a atividade antifúngica do óleo essencial de Lippia sidoides Cham. e do timol, sobre cepas de Candida. Inicialmente os produtos foram testados frente a 16 cepas fúngicas pela técnica de difusão em meio sólido, o que permitiu selecionar linhagens para continuidade da pesquisa. Com as linhagens de Candida krusei (CK LMBM 01, CK LMBM 02), Candida albicans (CA LM 62) e Candida tropicalis (CT LM 20), procedeu-se, por microdiluição em caldo, a determinação da Concentração Inibitória Mínima (CIM) e em meio sólido, a Concentração Fungicida Mínima (CFM) dos produtos foi identificada. O microcultivo das leveduras em meio empobrecido foi realizado para verificação de alterações morfológicas e, além disso, uma análise da composição química do óleo foi realizada por Cromatografia Gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massas (CG-EM). Nesta análise, o constituinte majoritário foi o timol (84,95%), seguido de compostos como p-cimeno e Éter metil carvacrol, entre outros. A CIM do óleo essencial de Lippia sidoides Cham. frente às cepas variou entre 64 e 256 μg/mL, enquanto a CIM do timol foi estabelecida entre 32 e 64 μg/mL. A CFM do óleo essencial foi determinada entre 128 e 512 μg/mL e para o timol foram encontrados valores entre 64 e 128 μg/mL. Em relação à análise micromorfológica, verificada nas concentrações de CIM e CIM x 2, o óleo essencial inibiu o dimorfismo das cepas CK 01 e CT 20 na CIM e quando foi ensaiado o timol, este, na CIM, impediu a transição morfológica das cepas CK 01 e CA 62. Uma redução da morfogênese também foi obsevada na cepa CT 20, porém apenas em CIM x 2 e de forma mais discreta. Os resultados enaltecem o potencial antifúngico de L. sidoides e de seu composto majoritário timol tanto no combate à Candida quanto na neutralização de um dos fatores de virulência, a capacidade invasiva por formação de hifas e pseudohifas verificado na condição patogênica da candidíase. Estes dados são promissores e poderão incentivar futuras pesquisas sobre os aspectos fitoquímicos, toxicológicos e farmacológicos tanto do óleo essencial de Lippia sidoides como também de seus componentes químicos.

ABSTRACT The resistance of the Candida against drugs has been a challenge to the discovery of new substances with antimicrobial or modulatory effects that could be used against the cadidiasis. This work evaluated the antifungal activity of the essential oil of Lippia sidoides Cham. and of the Thymol against Candida strains. The products were tested towards 16 strains of Candida using the diffusion method, which allowed to select the strains in order to proceed with the research. The strains of Candida krusei (CK LMBM 01, CK LMBM 02), Candida albicans (CA LM 62) and Candida tropicalis (CT LM 20) were assayed by the microdilution method so that the Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and the Minimal Fungicide Concentration (MFC) could be determined. The morphogenesis of the Candida was evaluated using poor environment in order to observe morphological changes. The composition of the essential oil was determined by GC-MS. The main compound observed was the thymol (84.95%). The MIC of the essential oil of L. sidoides and Thymol ranged between 64 to 256 μg/mL, and between 32 to 64 μg/mL respectively. The MFC of the essential oil and the thymol varied between 128 to 512 μg/mL and 64 to 128 μg/mL respectively. The morphogenesis of different Candida strains was inhibited in the MIC and MICx2 to the essential oil and thymol. The results indicated the antifungal potential of the L. sidoides and of the Thymol due to the inhibition of the invasive capacity, one of the most important virulence factors for the candidiasis` development. These results are promising to new researches about the phytochemical, toxicological and pharmacological aspects of the essential oil of L. sidoides and its phytochemical compounds.

RESUMO O cupim asiático Coptotermes gestroi é considerado praga em áreas urbanas, causando danos expressivos em casas, edifícios e árvores. Esta pesquisa avaliou a eficiência de Isaria javanica URM4993 e I. javanica URM4995 sobre operários de C. gestroi. Os insetos foram pulverizados nas concentrações de 104 a 108 conídios/mL e mantidos em incubadora a 25 ± 1º C e 80 ± 10% de umidade relativa. Determinou-se a Concentração Letal (CL50) e o Tempo Letal (TL50), bem como foi quantificada a produção de conídios sobre os insetos mortos. Os aspectos biológicos referentes à germinação e esporulação, antes e após a infecção em C. gestroi, foram avaliados. O fungo foi virulento ao cupim, causando infecção em todas as concentrações utilizadas, sendo que I. javanica URM4993 foi mais eficiente, por causar mortalidade de 100%, após o 6º dia de inoculação (CL50 de 4,86 conídios/mL e TL50 de 2,26 dias). A esporulação nos insetos mortos não diferiu entre as linhagens. Foi observado que o percentual de germinação foi maior nas linhagens reisoladas do que nas linhagens padrão. Contudo, I. javanica URM4993 apresentou maior potencial de esporulação. Esses resultados mostram o fungo como um candidato ao controle biológico desse cupim.

ABSTRACT The Asiatic termite Coptotermes gestroi is considered a pest in urban areas causing extensive damage to houses, buildings and trees. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of Isaria javanica URM4993 and URM4995 on workers of C. gestroi. Insects were sprayed with concentrations of 104 at 108 conidia/mL and kept in an incubator at 25 ± 1º C and 80 ± 10% relative humidity. Results were used to determine the lethal concentration (LC50) and lethal time (LT50). Conidia production on dead insects was assessed. Biological aspects related to germination and sporulation, before and after infection with C. gestroi were also assessed. The fungus was virulent to termites, causing infection at all tested concentrations, with I. javanica URM4993 being the most virulent, causing 100% mortality after six days of inoculation (LC50 of 4.86 x 10 conidia/mL and LT50 of 2.26 days). Sporulation on dead insects did not differ between strains. The percentage of germination was greater for reisolated strains than for standard strains. However, I. javanica URM4993 showed greater sporulation. These results show that the fungus is a candidate for the biological control of termites.

Objetivou-se, com a realização da pesquisa, avaliar modificações fisiológicas e anatômicas em plantas de melissa, cultivadas sob malhas termorrefletoras (Aluminet®), em diferentes níveis de sombreamento, visando conhecer a plasticidade fenotípica em resposta de adaptação a diferentes quantidades de luz. Os tratamentos foram caracterizados por plantas submetidas a pleno sol e a 20 e 60% de intensidade luminosa, e arranjados conforme o delineamento inteiramente casualizado (DIC). As quantificações de clorofila foram feitas em quatro repetições, as medições das epidermes e parênquimas foram repetidas 15 vezes e utilizou-se 10 repetições para as avaliações das características de cloroplastos e grãos de amido destes. Plantas submetidas a 20% de intensidade luminosa apresentaram maior quantidade de clorofila a e, portanto, maior razão clorofila a/b. Comparativamente, as folhas de melissa a pleno sol e a 60% de luz apresentaram células da epiderme adaxial mais espessas, mas as células da epiderme abaxial mostraram características encontradas em folhas de sombra, ou seja, mais finas. Quanto maior a intensidade luminosa, maior o número de cloroplastos, porém, a pleno sol mostraram-se mais finos e com menor área. Os grãos de amido de plantas cultivadas sob ambientes sombreados tiveram maior área e ocuparam maior parte nos cloroplastos de plantas a 60% de intensidade luminosa. Assim, plantas de melissa, quando submetidas ao sombreamento, tiveram plasticidade fenotípica.

The aim of this study was to evaluate physiological and anatomical modifications in lemon balm plants, cultivated under thermo-reflector nets (Aluminet®) at different levels of shading, in order to understand the phenotypic plasticity in adaptation response to different light quantities. The treatments were characterized by plants subjected to full sun and 20 and 60% of luminous intensity, and arranged in completely randomized design (CRD). The quantifications of chlorophylls were done in four replicates, the measurements of epidermis and parenchymas were repeated 15 times and 10 replicates were used to evaluate characteristics of chloroplasts and their starch grains. Plants subjected to 20% of luminous intensity showed higher quantity of chlorophyll a and, therefore, higher chlorophyll a/b ratio. Lemon balm leaves under full sun and 60% of light showed thicker adaxial epidermis cells, but the abaxial epidermis cells showed characteristics found in shaded leaves, i.e., they were slender. The higher the light intensity, the larger the number of chloroplasts; however, under full sun, they were slender and had smaller area. The starch grains of leaves grown under shaded environments showed larger area and, at 60% of luminous intensity, occupied the largest part of chloroplasts. Thus, lemon balm plants, subjected to shading conditions, showed phenotypic plasticity.
