RESUMO Códices iluminados medievais de coleções públicas são apresentados na perspectiva do colecionismo próprio à era moderna a partir de uma abordagem material baseada na análise de catálogos descritivos de diversas bibliotecas nacionais, em especial o catálogo elaborado pelo bibliotecário Frei João de Santa Ana entre 1809 e 1821 para o acervo da Biblioteca do Palácio Nacional de Mafra, em Portugal. O interesse do artigo é refletir sobre a transferência de propriedade dos livros de devoção privada, de uso reservado e individualizado, e sua presença em bibliotecas reais e as consequentes transformações na forma material e nas apropriações simbólicas e funcionais dadas a esses objetos. Para tanto, é apresentado um breve exame sobre as práticas de produção, uso, circulação, colecionismo e preservação de livros iluminados em geral, por meio do estudo de casos emblemáticos sobre circulação e transformação material. Quanto à produção, fórmulas de representação pictórica propagadas pelos ateliers da região da península itálica, dos Andes, de Flandres e da França são, por um lado, classificadas comparativamente e identificadas em códices específicos. Por outro lado, as a alterações impostas aos códices para atender ao gosto dos novos proprietários são usadas como indícios materiais que revelam práticas de colecionismo e preservação.

ABSTRACT Medieval illuminated codices belonging to public collections are presented under the perspective of the modern era’s habit of collecting. The material approach is based in the analysis of descriptions from several national libraries, especially the catalogue rendered by the librarian Frei João de Santa Ana, between 1809 and 1821 for the Mafra’s National Palace Library collection. This work aims to reflect on the ownership transference of private devotion codices - of reserved and personal use -, their presence in royal libraries and the significant shifts in their physical shape and symbolical-functional assignments. To do so, a brief study on the practices of production, use, circulation, collecting and preservation of illuminated manuscripts, in general, is presented, through the study of emblematic case studies of circulation and material transformations. Regarding their production, formulas of pictorial representation disseminated by studios on the Italian Peninsula, Andes, Flanders and France are comparatively classified and identified in specific codices. Also, the alterations inflicted to the codices to meet the preferences of the new owners are used as material signs that reveal practices of preservation and the habit of collecting.

Abstract This study aimed to carry out a diagnosis of the cheese whey exploitation by the Brazilian dairy industry using a questionnaire survey. The dairy industries (n=100) were mainly from Southeast (55%) and South (25%) regions and supervised by the Federal Inspection System (80%). Most of them produced (67%) and processed (60%) sweet cheese whey, using it in whey dairy beverages (60%), Ricotta (20%), whey concentrate (15%), and milk blends (5%), which were resold for supermarkets (53%) or industries (20%). However, 27% of the industries discard whey in the effluent treatment system or use as animal feed, suggesting a market for using this by-product.

Resumo: Os exames material, visual e textual de documentos postos em comparação podem esclarecer a produção e os destinos de manuscritos sobre a revolta de Vila Rica atribuídos a Pedro Miguel de Almeida Portugal, 3o conde de Assumar: os códices Discurso historico, e político sobre a soblevação que nas Minas houve no anno de 1720, depositado no Arquivo Público Mineiro, em Belo Horizonte (APM), e Noticia da sublevação que nas minas do Ouro Preto houve no anno de 1720, do acervo do Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros da Universidade de São Paulo (IEB-USP). O artigo realiza um balanço historiográfico acerca dos objetos de pesquisa com atenção aos primeiros tempos de suas divulgações, contextualiza as tipologias de seus textos e expõe resultados de análises em torno da materialidade dos códices.

Abstract: The material, visual and textual examinations of documents placed in comparison may clarify the production and destiny of manuscripts on the revolt of Vila Rica attributed to Pedro Miguel de Almeida Portugal, 3rd Count of Assumar: the codices Discurso historico, e político sobre a soblevação que nas Minas houve no anno de 1720, deposited in the Arquivo Público Mineiro, in Belo Horizonte (APM), and Noticia da sublevação que nas minas do Ouro Preto houve no anno de 1720, from the collection of the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros of the Universidade de São Paulo (IEB-USP). The article carries out a historiographic balance on the objects of research - aiming to the early times of its disclosures -, contextualizes the typologies of their texts, and exposes results of analyses around their materiality.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of human papillomavirus DNA and genotypes in breast cancer and normal breast tissue samples obtained from women from the northeast region of Brazil. METHOD: One hundred three breast cancer samples and 95 normal breast samples, as the non-malignant controls, were studied. DNA extraction was verified by human beta-globin gene amplification, and polymerase chain reaction was conducted based on HPV L1-specific consensus primers MY09/MY11 and GP5+/GP6+, followed by nested multiplex polymerase chain reaction with type-specific primers for the E6/E7 consensus region. RESULTS: Human papillomavirus DNA was detected in 51 (49.5%) breast carcinoma samples and 15 (15.8%) normal breast samples (p<0.0001). Human papillomavirus genotypes 6 and 11 were identified in 15.2% of all samples. CONCLUSIONS: The high frequency of human papillomavirus infection in breast cancer samples indicates a potential role of this virus in breast carcinogenesis in the studied participants.

RESUMO A partir da observação interdisciplinar fundada nos interesses da história social, da história da arte e da ciência da conservação, este artigo pretende fomentar a discussão conceitual e terminológica envolvida na identificação de técnicas e materiais empregados no desenho e na pintura em manuscritos, com foco particular nos produtos visuais resultantes das viagens científicas dos séculos 18 e 19, mas se estendendo também às demais imagens, com ou sem o estatuto de obras de arte, produzidas no mesmo período. Fugindo das generalizações inerentes à expressão “desenho aquarelado”, são expostas as especificidades das tintas usadas na pintura em papel, sua preparação, técnicas de aplicação e resultados óticos obtidos com os diferentes processos, relacionando os produtos finais às circunstâncias sociais de produção, com o intuito de auxiliar na distinção entre desenhos, pinturas a têmpera e pinturas em aquarela e apresentar alternativas terminológicas que especifiquem as qualidades materiais dos documentos gráficos.

ABSTRACT This paper aims to foment the terminological and conceptual discussion involved in the identification of techniques and materials applied to manuscripts, drawings and paintings, particularly produced during scientific expeditions in the 18th and the 19th centuries; it also analyzes other images from that time, regardless of their artistic status. The methodological approach is established on interdisciplinary interests of Social History, Art History, and Conservation Science. Specification of the inks used on paper, their application and preparation methods, as well as the distinction of the optical effects resulting from the different process, could avoid the widespread generalizations in the use of the expression “watercolor drawing”. Social and historical circumstances related to the production of the visual material could also help identifying the material qualities of graphic documents, and distinguishing among graffiti, china ink and watercolor drawings, and between body color and watercolor paintings. It is important to acknowledge that the use of materials and techniques was a painter’s social and historical choice made from many possibilities.

INTRODUÇÃO: Estudos transversais recentes mostraram alta prevalência de doenças crônicas e incapacidades físicas entre idosos. Considerando o rápido processo de envelhecimento do Brasil e as conseqüências que esse aumento de idosos com doenças crônicas e incapacidades associadas acarretará para o sistema de saúde, fazia-se necessário estudo que pudesse superar as limitações dos dados transversais, permitindo determinar quais os fatores determinantes de uma vida longa e livre de doenças incapacitantes, o chamado envelhecimento bem sucedido. É apresentada a metodologia do primeiro estudo epidemiológico longitudinal com idosos residentes na comunidade, no Brasil. MÉTODO: O perfil do cohorte inicial é comparado com dados de estudos anteriores a com o perfil dos não respondentes para avaliar a validade de análises longitudinais futuras.O projeto EPIDOSO (Epidemiologia do Idoso) seguiu por dois anos 1.667 idosos (65+), residentes em São Paulo. Consistiu de duas ondas, cada qual com três inquéritos: domiciliar, clínico e laboratorial. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: O perfil da população não diferiu de estudos anteriores, mostrando maioria de mulheres, viúvas, vivendo em domicílios multigeracionais, com uma alta prevalência de doenças crônicas, distúrbios psiquiátricos e incapacidades físicas. A despeito de todas as dificuldades inerentes a um estudo longitudinal, o grupo de não-respondentes ao segundo inquérito domiciliar não diferiu significativamente dos respondentes, assegurando análises longitudinais livres desse tipo de viés. Em relação aos inquéritos clínico e laboratorial, os não-respondentes mostraram-se mais velhos e mais incapacitados que os respondentes, limitando o uso dos dados clínicos e laboratoriais a análises pertinentes a uma cohorte mais jovem e saudável. Sexo, educação, apoio familiar e nível socioeconômico não influenciaram de forma significativa a taxa de não - resposta, ao contrário do que se costuma verificar.

Given Brazil’s rapid aging process and the obvious consequences of the growing number of old people with chronic diseases and associated disabilities for the provision of health services, a need was felt for a study that would overcome the limitations of cross-sectional data and shed some light on the main factors determining whether a person will live longer and free of disabling diseases, the so-called successful aging. The methodology of the first follow-up study of elderly residents in Brazil is presented. METHOD: The profile of the initial cohort is compared with previous cross-sectional data and an in-depth analysis of nonresponse is carried out in order to assess the validity of future longitudinal analysis. The EPIDOSO (‘Epidemiologia do Idoso’) Study conducted a two-year follow-up of 1,667 elderly people (65+), living in S. Paulo. The study consisted of two waves, each consisting of household, clinical, and biochemical surveys. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: In general, the initial cohort showed a similar profile to previous cross-sectional samples in S. Paulo. There was a majority of women, mostly widows, living in multigenerational households, and a high prevalence of chronic illnesses, psychiatric disturbances, and physical disabilities. Despite all the difficulties inherent in follow-up studies, there was a fairly low rate of nonresponse to the household survey after two years, which did not actually affect the representation of the cohort at the final household assessment, making unbiased longitudinal analysis possible. Concerning the clinical and blood sampling surveys, the respondents tended to be younger and less disabled than the nonrespondents, limiting the use of the clinical and laboratory data to longitudinal analysis aimed at a healthier cohort. It is worth mentioning that gender, education, family support, and socioeconomic status were not important determinants of nonresponse, as is often the case.
