ABSTRACT: Desert rose (Adenium obesum) is a succulent plant that is native to the Arabian Peninsula. It has great commercial value with exuberant structure and flowering. It can be propagated by seeds to ensure maximum development of the caudex. Despite its high economic value, studies on its propagation are still required. The aim of this study was to evaluate seed germination performance and seedling development of desert rose seedlings in different substrates. Treatments comprised five different substrate compositions: S1 (Soil), S2 (Sand), S3 (Carolina Soil commercial substrate), S4 (Sand + Carolina Soil), and S5 (Soil+ Carolina Soil). The following were evaluated using uni- and multi-variate approaches: germination, first count, germination speed index, caudex diameter, number of leaves, seedling length, root length, shoot length, and fresh mass and dry mass. Sand is the ideal substrate for the germination of A. obesum seeds, while for forming seedlings, mixtures of the Carolina Soil commercial substrate with sand or soil should be used.

A series of triphenylamino (TPA)-chalcones and triphenylamino-β-arylchalcones, displaying either D-π-D or D-π-A architecture, were synthesized through aldol condensations and Heck reactions. The chalcone derivatives display intense absorption bands ranging from 389 to 432 nm and molar extinction coefficients of ca. 105 L mol-1 cm-1 corresponding to π-π* electronic transitions. The photoluminescence emissions are peaked between 470 and 563 nm with large Stokes shifts (80-131 nm), attributed to charge transfer in the excited state. The dyes present low fluorescence quantum yields, which is attributed to radiationless excited state deactivation related to aryl rings rotation. Spectroscopic and electrochemical methods were used to determine the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels. Both optical and electrochemical properties of the TPA-chalcone derivatives are considerably affected by the substitution pattern of the chalcones aryl rings and also by the β-arylation of the olefin moiety.

ABSTRACT The use of organic composts and the inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are management alternatives in organic production systems. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of AMF inoculation (Acaulospora scrobiculata, Acaulospora colombiana and without inoculation) and organic compost of cacao bark (0 g dm-3, 5 g dm-3, 10 g dm-3, 20 g dm-3 and 30 g dm-3) on the mycorrhizal efficiency and nutrient uptake, in 'Morada' soursop seedlings. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 x 5 factorial arrangement (AMF x organic compost), with four replicates. A higher mycorrhizal efficiency was observed for the A. colombiana isolate, with the addition of 0 g dm-3, 5 g dm-3 and 10 g dm-3 of organic compost to the soil, in relation to the A. scrobiculata isolate, which differed statistically at the doses of 20 g dm-3 and 30 g dm-3 of organic compost. The AMF inoculation promotes increases in the N, P, K, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn contents, when compared to plants without inoculation. The organic compost exerts an effect on the inoculation, mainly on the absorption of P. The AMF inoculation, together with the organic fertilization, promotes the growth and nutrition of seedlings.

ABSTRACT The water footprint concept has gained interest because the freshwater is a global resource utilized in all activities and can be fundamental in helping to understand how activities and products are related to water scarcity. The purpose of this study is to compare the sugarcane water footprint measurements derived by the traditional method used for its estimation and using the complete water balance in the soil under field conditions. The field experiment was carried out at the Capim II farm located in the coastal area of state of Paraiba, Brazil, during the period from October 2009 to August 2010 with sugarcane. The results indicated that the green and gray water footprint values decrease as there is an increase in irrigation depth. Inversely, the blue water footprint values increase as there is an increase in irrigation depth. The sugarcane water footprint based on the CROPWAT model overestimates green and blue water footprint values and underestimates the gray water footprint values obtained from the soil water balance.

The main objective of this study was to find an efficient method in determining the evapotranspiration of sugarcane with little requirement for environmental measurements. Field experiments were conducted in the Distillery Miriri S.A (UNIAGRO), located in the muncipality of Capim, Paraíba state, Brazil, from October 2009 to August 2010. The data for determining evapotranspiration were obtained in the rainfed and the data to determine the reference evapotranspiration were obtained in PCD (Data Collection Platform), INPE. The survey results allow to conclude that the method of Priestley-Taylor showed values very close to those of the reference evapotranspiration throughout the crop cycle. Moreover, the method of Priestley-Taylor with the adjusted coefficient showed the best performance in the evapotranspiration of sugarcane when compared with measurements obtained by the method of soil water balance. The results also indicate that the coefficient α of Priestley-Taylor varies considerably depending on the growth stage of the crop.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The aim of this study was to assess the chemical composition of essential oils of Illicum verum, Ageratum conyzoides,Piper hispidinervumand Ocotea odorífera, as well as their toxicity to the green-aphid Schizaphis graminum. Compound identification was carried out with gas chromatography + mass spectrometry, and quantification with gas chromatography + flame ionization detector, both with DB5 column. The hydrodistillation process promoted oil yield of 3.81% for I. verum; 0.46% for A. conyzoides; 2.85 % for P. hispidinervum;and 0.68 % for O. odorífera. The major components from the oils of A. conyzoides was precocene (87.0%) and (E)-caryophyllene (7.1%); (E)-anethol (90.4%), limonene (2.6%) and methyl-chavicol (1.3%) for I. verum; methyleugenol (81.2%) and safrole (10.6%) for O. odorifera; and safrole (82.5%) and α-terpinolene (13.4%) for P. hispidinervum. The acute toxicity test (24 hours) performed by contact in sorghum leaves or contaminated filter-paper showed that the higher toxicity occur with essential oils of A. conyzoides, with LC50of 7.01 and 7.01 µg oil/cm2, respectively; followed by O. odorifera, with LC50 of 17.10 and 66.70 µg oil/cm2, respectively; I. verum, with LC50of 66.40 and 65.40 µg oil/cm2, respectively; and low toxicity was observed for the P. hispidinervum essential oil, with LC50 of 64.00 and 143.00 oil/cm2, respectively. With the results obtained in this research, we can state that the use of these essential oils can be a new tool in integrated pest management.

Introduction In some occasions, correlations between human structures can help planning surgical intra-abdominal interventions. The previous determination of ureteral length helps pre-operatory planning of surgeries, reduces costs of auxiliary exams, the correct choice of double-J catheter with low morbidity and fewer symptoms, and an adequate adhesion to treatment. Objective To evaluate ureteral length in adult cadavers and to analyze its correlation with anthropometric measures. Materials and Methods: From April 2009 to January 2012 we determined ureteral length of adult cadavers submitted to necropsy and obtained the following measures: height, distance from shoulder to wrist, elbow-wrist, xiphoid appendix-umbilicus, umbilicus-pubis, xiphoid appendix-pubis and between iliac spines. We analyzed the correlations between ureteral length and those anthropometric measures. Results We dissected 115 ureters from 115 adult corpses from April 2009 to January 2012. Median ureteral length didn't vary between sexes or according to height. It was observed no correlation among ureteral length and all considered anthropometric measures in all analyzed subgroups and in general population. There were no significant differences between right and left ureteral measures. Conclusions There is no difference of ureteral length in relation to height or gender (male or female). There is no significant correlation among ureteral length and the considered anthropometric measures.
