The genus Fridericia belongs to the family Bignoniaceae and comprises 60 species that occur in humid to dry forests, cerrado, and caatinga vegetation. It may be found from Mexico to Argentina and southern Brazil. This article reviews studies conducted on this genus, primarily focusing on its chemical composition and biological activities. Of the 60 known Fridericia species, only 14 have been the object of chemical and biological studies, accounting for 23% of the researched species. Eighty-four compounds, mainly flavonoids, terpenes, xanthones, and phenylethanoids, have been isolated from these species. The biological properties described in this review include antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antiviral, healing, antiproliferative, trypanocidal, and antileishmania activities. Notably, the species F. chica has been the most studied, as it is listed in the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Brazilian Unified Health System (RENISUS).

Abstract This purpose of this study was to compare the efficiency of the McMaster and Mini-FLOTAC quantitative techniques in the investigation of helminths in feces of pigs. An analysis was made of 74 fecal samples from pigs raised on family farms located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These were analyzed by the Mini-FLOTAC and McMaster techniques in a solution of 1,200g/mL NaCl. This investigation revealed a superiority in the frequency of all helminths detected by Mini-FLOTAC, including Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, strongyles and Strongyloides ransomi. The Kappa index revealed substantial agreement in all comparisons made in relation to the frequency of positive samples. However, significant statistical differences in the comparison of EPGs between McMaster and Mini-FLOTAC were observed for all nematodes (p ≤0.05). Higher values of Pearson’s linear correlation coefficient (r), between the techniques in relation to EPG were observed for A. suum and T. suis, differently from what was observed for strongyles and S. ransomi. Mini-FLOTAC proved to be a more satisfactory and reliable technique both for the diagnosis of parasites and for the determination of EPG in pig feces due to the larger size of its counting chambers, thus increasing the helminth egg recovery rates.

Resumo Este estudo objetivou comparar a eficiência das técnicas quantitativas de McMaster e Mini-FLOTAC para a pesquisa de helmintos em fezes de suínos. Foram analisadas 74 amostras fecais de suínos mantidos em propriedades familiares, localizadas no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Estas foram analisadas pelas técnicas de Mini-FLOTAC e McMaster com solução de NaCl 1.200g/mL. Pode-se verificar uma superioridade na frequência de todos os helmintos detectados por meio do Mini-FLOTAC, incluindo-se Ascaris suum, Trichuris suis, estrongilídeos e Strongyloides ransomi. O índice Kappa mostrou uma concordância substancial em todas as comparações realizadas, em relação à frequência de amostras positivas. Entretanto, diferenças estatísticas significativas na comparação do OPG entre McMaster e Mini-FLOTAC foram observadas para todos os nematoides (p ≤0.05). Elevados valores do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson foram observados entre as técnicas, em relação ao OPG para A. suum e T. suis, diferentemente do evidenciado para estrôngilos e S. ransomi. Mini-FLOTAC mostrou-se uma técnica mais satisfatória e confiável, tanto para o diagnóstico de parasitos quanto para a determinação do OPG em fezes de suínos, devido ao maior tamanho das suas câmaras de contagem, situação que acaba aumentando a eficiência da recuperação dos ovos dos helmintos.

Abstract This study aimed to characterize the spatial distribution and composition of living Benthic Foraminifera (BF) and to comprehend how environmental conditions (e.g., organic matter) can affect communities of these protozoa in the northern and southern sectors of the Santos Basin (SB), in the continental slope and São Paulo Plateau. In this context, 23 stations (65 samples including replicates at each station) were collected between 400 and 2,400 m water depth. Multivariate analyses revealed that the ecological structure of the community changes mainly along the bathymetric gradients. Stations located between 400 and 700 m, both in northern and southern sectors, are characterized by the presence of indicator species of high intensity of currents, such as Globocassidulina subglobosa and Trifarina bradyi. These stations are also mainly marked by the occurrence of Epistominella exigua, a phytodetritivore species. The stations at 1,000 and 1,300 m depth, in both sectors, are characterized by high accumulation of organic matter in the sediments, which favors the development of agglutinated foraminifera species, such as those of the genus Reophax. Finally, the lower slope and the São Paulo Plateau, in both sectors, are oligotrophic regions, with pulses of labile organic carbon, probably low current velocities and the presence of Alabaminella weddellensis. The quantity and quality of food, which are closely related to hydro-sedimentary dynamics and bentho-pelagic coupling in the slope and São Paulo Plateau, are the main factors that influence the distribution of living BF assemblages in the SB.

Abstract The iAtlantic Project has established an international collaborative strategy to improve mapping and characterization of deep and open ocean ecosystems in understudied regions of the Atlantic and evaluate their health. In December 2022, the first iAtlantic expedition in the South Atlantic set off to map and explore seafloor ecosystems in the Santos Basin slope (200-1,000 m depths) in collaboration with the Petrobras ‘Santos Basin - Regional Characterization Project.’ The 17-day ‘iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras’ cruise was conducted on board the research vessel NPqHOc Vital de Oliveira (Brazilian Navy) and performed (a) water column structure characterization, (b) seafloor morphology mapping, (c) description of benthic habitats and communities by seafloor imagery and biological/ geological sampling, and (d) ex-situ experiments to assess the functioning of sedimentary ecosystems and their responses to climate-related environmental changes. This study describes the rationale behind the iAtlantic_BR10-Petrobras cruise science plan, reports its sampling strategy and methods, and summarizes its collected data and preliminary results.

Abstract Background: The observation that 2-deoxy-2[18F]fluoro-D-glucose-positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging ([18F]F-FDG-PET/MRI) revealed high-grade arterial wall FDG uptake, without arterial wall thickening with contrast-enhancement, in a considerable number of c-TA patients in our previous study, encouraged us to compare patients with both PET and MR angiography (MRA) positives, with those with PET positive but MRA negative. Our aim was to evaluate the relevance of these two imaging modalities together. Methods: A three-center cross-sectional study with 17 patients who fulfilled the EULAR/PRINTO/PReS criteria for c-TA and who underwent [18F]F-FDG-PET/MRI was previously performed. Herein we compared patients/vessels with positive PET (arterial wall 18F-FDG uptake higher than liver) and positive MRA (arterial wall thickening with contrast-enhancement)—group 1, with those with positive PET but negative MRA—group 2. Results: Median disease duration of 17 c-TA patients was 10.4 years. Nine patients were classified as group 1 and six as group 2. Median of metabolic inflammatory volume (MIV) of all arterial segments was significantly higher in group 1 (2346 vs. 1177 cm3; p = 0.036). Fifty-four (19%) from 284 available arterial segments presented positive findings in vessel wall in one or both images. Positive findings were concordant between PET and MRA in only 13% arterial segments (group 1); most changes (28–59.6%) that were discordant between both images, were positive in PET and negative in MRA (group 2). Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that [18F]F-FDG-PET/MRI added information about inflammation in vessel wall of c-TA patients. Prospective multicenter studies are needed in order to get solid data to guide immunosuppressive tapering and withdrawal.

RESUMO: Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum e Sarcocystis spp. são parasitas detectados em tecidos de animais domésticos e selvagens. As aves são relevantes no ciclo de vida e epidemiologia dos protozoários devido à grande variedade de espécies de aves, hábitos alimentares e migratórios. O objetivo deste estudo foi a detecção molecular de T. gondii, N. caninum e Sarcocystis spp. em diversas espécies de aves naturalmente infectadas. Portanto, amostras de tecido de cérebro e coração foram coletados de aves recebidas e necropsiadas no Laboratório Central de Diagnóstico de Patologias Aviárias (LCDPA), sendo submetidas a extração de DNA e amplificação pela reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) do gene 18S rRNA para Sarcocystis spp., gene NC5 para N. caninum e gene repetitivo 529 pares de bases para T. gondii. N. caninum foi detectado em duas aves (02/65; 3,07%), em amostra de cérebro de Rupornis magnisrostris (número acesso: ON182081, 267pb) e em amostras de cérebro e coração de Dendrocygna bicolor (número acesso: ON211312, 267pb). DNA do genero Sarcocystis spp. foi detectado em três aves (03/65; 4,62%), sendo que no sequenciamento genético foram identificados Sarcocystis spp. (número acesso: MW463929) em cérebro de Nymphicus hollandicus e Sarcocystis speeri (número acesso: MW464125) em cérebro e coração de Amazona aestiva. A análise filogenética revelou que Sarcocystis spp. formou um clado com Sarcocystis spp. que utilizam gambá (Didelphis aurita) como hospedeiro definitivo e S. falcatula que utilizam Lóris-molucano (Trichoglossus moluccanus) como hospedeiro intermediário. S. speeri formou um clado com S. speeri que utilizou Mus musculus como hospedeiro intermediário experimental e formou um clado com Sarcocystis columbae, Sarcocystis corvusi, Sarcocystis halieti e Sarcocystis sp. que afetam espécies de aves. O DNA de T. gondii não foi detectado em nenhum tecido. Este é o primeiro relato de detecção de DNA de N. caninum, Sarcocystis spp. e S. speeri em amostras de tecido para essas espécies de aves estendendo a lista de hospedeiros intermediários.

ABSTRACT: Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Sarcocystis spp. are parasites detected in tissues of domestic and wild animals. Birds are relevant in the life cycle and epidemiology of protozoa due to the wide variety of bird species, feeding and migratory habits. The aim of this study was the molecular detection of T. gondii, N. caninum and Sarcocystis spp. in several species of naturally infected birds. Therefore, samples of brain and heart tissue were collected from birds received and necropsied at the Central Laboratory for the Diagnosis of Avian Pathologies (LCDPA), undergoing DNA extraction and amplification by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of the 18S rRNA gene to Sarcocystis spp., NC5 gene for N. caninum and repetitive gene 529 base pairs for T. gondii. N. caninum was detected in two birds (02/65, 3.07%), in a brain sample of Rupornis magnisrostris (accession number: ON182081, 267pb) and in a brain and heart sample of Dendrocygna bicolor (accession number: ON211312, 267pb). DNA of the genus Sarcocystis was detected in three birds (03/65, 4.62%), and in the genetic sequencing Sarcocystis spp. (accession number: MW463929) in brain of Nymphicus hollandicus and Sarcocystis speeri (accession number: MW464125) in brain and heart of Amazona aestiva. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Sarcocystis spp. formed a clade with Sarcocystis spp. that use skunk (Didelphis aurita) as definitive host and Sarcocystis falcatula that use Moluccan loris (Trichoglossus moluccanus) as intermediate host. S. speeri formed a clade with S. speeri that used Mus musculus as an experimental intermediate host and formed a clade with Sarcocystis columbae, Sarcocystis corvusi, Sarcocystis halieti and Sarcocystis sp. that affect bird species. T. gondii DNA was not detected in any tissue. This is the first report of DNA detection of N. caninum, Sarcocystis spp. and S. speeri in tissue samples for these bird species extending the list of intermediate hosts.

Fridericia speciosa (Bignoniaceae) is a liana that occurs in humid to dry vegetation in eastern and southeastern Brazil. Species belonging to the genus Fridericia are employed as medicinal plants. This study evaluates the antipromastigote and cytotoxic activities of the crude extract, fractions, and compounds isolated from F. speciosa, and an HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) analytical method was used to quantify the bioactive flavonoids. The flavonoids alpinetin (1), luteolin (2), diosmetin (3), and apigenin (4) were isolated from the active EtOAc-soluble fraction (EAF) of the crude ethanol extract (LCE) obtained from F. speciosa leaves. Both LCE and EAF were active against the normal human lung fibroblast cell line GM07492A (IC50 of 460.7 µg mL-1 and 381.4 µg mL-1, respectively). Only EAF showed activity against Leishmania amazonensis (80.4% at 50 µg mL-1). Compounds 1 and 2 were quantified by HPLC-DAD in both LCE (1: 6.21%; 2: 1.11%) and EAF (1: 45.32%; 2: 2.00%). At 100 µM, compounds1-4 inhibited L. amazonensis flagellar motility by 40.2%, 26.8%, 1.0%, and 24.8%, respectively, while their toxicities (IC50) to the normal cell were > 1000, 353.0, 766.2, and >1000 µg mL-1, respectively. Therefore, F. speciosa leaves are a prolific source of bioactive flavonoids.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate drying kinetics for natural and pulped coffee, using different temperatures and drying airflows. For the conduction of the experiment, coffee fruits (Coffea arabica L. cv. Topázio) were harvested manually, selecting only ripe fruits and subsequent to the hydraulic separation. For drying the coffee, use a mechanical dryer with two temperatures (40 and 45°C) and four drying air streams (24; 60; 96 and 132 m3.min-1.m-2). Twelve models for employees to describe the drying kinetics of coffees. Among the models used to describe the drying process of natural coffee and pulped coffee, according to the results of the coefficient of determination, relative mean error, standard deviation of estimates and distribution of waste distribution, proposed model for the only one that presents fit for all as conditions study. The temperature of 45 ° C and the airflows of 96 and 132 m3.min-1.m-2 provide the shortest drying times regardless of the coffee processing type.

Resumo: Estima-se que no Brasil existam cerca de 900 mil indígenas (0,4% da população do país) pertencentes a mais de 300 etnias diferentes. Porém, informações sobre a epidemiologia do câncer e sobre os medicamentos antineoplásicos utilizados no tratamento desses indivíduos são escassas. Os objetivos do presente estudo são identificar os medicamentos antineoplásicos utilizados e descrever o perfil de utilização deles na população indígena tratada no Brasil, além de descrever o perfil epidemiológico dos usuários. Foi realizado um estudo do tipo ecológico que envolveu os atendimentos ambulatoriais de quimioterapia, realizados no período de janeiro de 2014 e dezembro de 2018, em todo o Brasil. A fonte de coleta dos dados utilizada foi o Sistema de Informação Ambulatorial, do Departamento de Informática do SUS, considerando apenas as Autorizações de Procedimentos de Alta Complexidade para Quimioterapia. Foram identificadas 2.425 autorizações para procedimentos de quimioterapia destinadas ao tratamento de pacientes indígenas. Um total de 2.292 autorizações, para um total de 210 indivíduos, foram analisadas. Observou-se um aumento do número de autorizações e de indígenas em uso de quimioterapia ao longo do período, maior concentração de indivíduos residentes e em tratamento na Região Sul do país, diversidade de tipos de tumores diagnosticados (n = 63) e de esquemas terapêuticos utilizados durante o tratamento (n = 107). O presente estudo trouxe um novo panorama sobre o perfil epidemiológico dos usuários indígenas sob tratamento quimioterápico no Sistema Único de Saúde. Os achados contribuem para o preenchimento da atual lacuna de conhecimento a respeito da saúde indígena no Brasil.

Abstract: Brazil has an estimated 900,000 indigenous people (0.4% of the country’s population), belonging to more than 300 different ethnic groups. However, information is scarce on cancer epidemiology and the antineoplastic drugs used in treatment of these individuals. The study’s objectives are to identify the antineoplastic drugs used and to describe the profile of use of these drugs in the indigenous population treated in Brazil, as well as to describe the patients’ epidemiological profile. An ecological study was performed involving outpatient chemotherapy care from January 2014 to December 2018 throughout Brazil. The data source was the Outpatient Information System of the Brazilian Health Informatics Department, considering only Authorizations for High-Complexity Chemotherapy Procedures. We identified 2,425 authorizations for chemotherapy procedures for treatment of indigenous patients. Of these, 2,292 authorizations for a total of 210 individuals were analyzed. We found an increase in the number of authorizations and of indigenous persons receiving chemotherapy over the period, with a higher concentration of individuals living in and receiving treatment in the South of Brazil, plus a wide diversity in the types of diagnosed tumors (n = 63) and of treatment regimen used during the treatment (n = 107). The current study provided a new overview of the epidemiological profile of indigenous patients receiving chemotherapy in the Brazilian Unified National Health System. The findings help fill a current knowledge gap on indigenous people’s health in Brazil.

No obstante, la información sobre la epidemiología del cáncer y medicamentos antineoplásicos utilizados en el tratamiento de esos individuos es escasa. Los objetivos del presente estudio son identificar los medicamentos antineoplásicos utilizados, y describir el perfil de utilización de esos medicamentos en la población indígena tratada en Brasil, así como describir el perfil epidemiológico de los usuarios. Se realizó un estudio de tipo ecológico, implicando la atención ambulatoria con quimioterapia, realizada en el período de enero de 2014 y diciembre de 2018 en todo Brasil. La fuente de recogida de datos utilizada fue el Sistema de Información Ambulatoria, del Departamento de Informática del SUS, considerando solamente las Autorizaciones de Procedimientos de Alta Complejidad para Quimioterapia. Se identificaron 2.425 autorizaciones para procedimientos de quimioterapia, destinadas al tratamiento de pacientes indígenas. Se analizaron 2.292 autorizaciones para un total de 210 individuos. Se observó un aumento del número de autorizaciones y de indígenas en el tratamiento de quimioterapia a lo largo del período, con una mayor concentración de individuos residentes y en tratamiento en la región sur del país, con una diversidad de tipos de tumores diagnosticados (n = 63) y de esquemas terapéuticos utilizados durante el tratamiento (n = 107). El presente estudio presentó un nuevo panorama sobre el perfil epidemiológico de los usuarios indígenas bajo tratamiento quimioterápico en el Sistema Único de Salud. Los hallazgos contribuyen a llenar la actual laguna de conocimiento con respecto a la salud indígena en Brasil.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected disease caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. One-third of infected patients will develop the cardiac form, which may progress to heart failure (HF). However, the factors that determine disease progression remain unclear. Increased angiotensin II activity is a key player in the pathophysiology of HF. A functional polymorphism of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene is associated with plasma enzyme activity. In CD, ACE inhibitors have beneficial effects supporting the use of this treatment in chagasic cardiomyopathy. METHODS: We evaluated the association of ACE I/D polymorphism with HF, performing a case-control study encompassing 343 patients with positive serology for CD staged as non-cardiomyopathy (stage A; 100), mild (stage B1; 144), and severe (stage C; 99) forms of Chagas heart disease. For ACE I/D genotyping by PCR, groups were compared using unconditional logistic regression analysis and adjusted for nongenetic covariates: age, sex, and trypanocidal treatment. RESULTS: A marginal, but not significant (p=0.06) higher prevalence of ACE I/D polymorphism was observed in patients in stage C compared with patients in stage A. Patients in stage C (CD with HF), were compared with patients in stages A and B1 combined into one group (CD without HF); DD genotype/D carriers were prevalent in the HF patients (OR = 2; CI = 1.013.96; p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: Our results of this cohort study, comprising a population from the Northeast region of Brazil, suggest that ACE I/D polymorphism is more prevalent in the cardiac form of Chagas disease with HF.

This study evaluated the safety of Lafoensia pacari A. St.-Hil. (Lythraceae) stem bark hydroalcoholic extract (LPE) through acute and subchronic toxicological assessments in mice. In the acute toxicity evaluation, a single 2000 mg/kg oral dose of LPE was administered to mice and clinical observations were conducted for 14 days. For subchronic toxicity, LPE doses (6.25-1000 mg/kg) were administered orally for 28 days and biochemical, hematological, histopathological analyses and renal and liver expression of Ki-67 were carried out. The acute oral toxicity evaluation of LPE showed no toxicity in mice and it was was classified as category 5 (LD50>2000-5000 mg/kg). In a repeated dose 28-day toxicity study, LPE (100-1000 mg/kg) led to an increase in reticulocytes, which suggests a possible proliferative effect on blood cells. In addition, LPE (400-1000 mg/kg) of produced alterations in biochemical parameters, although no microscopic changes were found in the organs analyzed. A normal expression of the Ki-67 cell proliferation indicator was observed in the kidney and liver tissues, which suggests that LPE does not bring about changes in the proliferative activity of these organs. In conclusion, LPE should be used with caution, particularly in larger doses over longer periods and also in combination with other medication.

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el potencial de los nematodos entomopatógenos (NEPs) de los géneros Steinernema y Heterorhabditis en el control de Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Para esto, se realizaron ensayos de selección de aislamientos, se evaluó la susceptibilidad en diferentes instares del insecto, se analizaron las diferentes concentraciones de NEPs y la producción in vivo de estos aislados, y se realizaron pruebas en invernadero en el Laboratorio de Entomología y control biológico de la Universidade Estadual do Norte do Paraná, Brasil. En los ensayos de selección con nueve aislamientos, los que causan mayor porcentaje de mortalidad en los insectos, se utilizaron diferentes concentraciones (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 Juveniles Infectivos/cm2) sobre diferentes instares del insecto (2do, 3er, 4to, 5to, 6to instar y pupa), en la producción in vivo en larvas de A. ipsilon y en pruebas de patogenicidad en invernadero. En el ensayo de selección, el aislamiento CH3 (Steinernema sp.) causó el 100 % de la mortalidad en A. ipsilon mientras que los aislados GL (Heterorhabditis amazonensis), IBCB-n02 (S. carpocapsae) e IBCB-n05 (H. indica) causaron 90 % de mortalidad. En la prueba de concentraciones, el aislado IBCB-n02 presentó una CL99 de 140 IJs/cm2 y el aislado IBCB-n05, una CL99 de 190 IJs/cm2. Las larvas de 3er y 4to instares fueron más susceptibles. En la prueba in vivo para la producción de larvas de A. ipsilon, no se observó diferencia entre los dos aislamientos. En el ensayo en invernadero, el aislado IBCB-n02 fue el único que difirió del tratamiento de control.

Abstract This work aims to evaluate the potential of Brazilian isolates of entomopathogenic nematodes through the selection of isolates for Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). In order to analyze the susceptibility at different instars of the insect and different concentrations, to investigate the in vivo production of these isolates, and to perform greenhouse tests in the Laboratory of Entomologia e Controle Microbiano of Universidade Estadual do Norte do Paraná, Brazil. Selection tests were carried out with nine isolates, and those that caused greater percentages of insect mortality were used in concentration tests (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 Infective Juveniles (IJs)/cm2), with different instars of the insect (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th instars and pupa), in the in vivo production of A. ipsilon larvae, and in pathogenicity tests in a greenhouse. In the selection test, the isolate CH3 (Steinernema sp.) caused 100 % of mortality in A. ipsilon, and the isolates GL (Heterorhabditis amazonensis), IBCBn-02 (S. carpocapsae) and IBCB-n05 (H. indica) caused 90 % mortality. In the tests of different concentrations, the isolate IBCB-n02 had CL99 estimated at a concentration of 140 IJs/cm2, and the isolate IBCB-n05 had CL99 estimated at a concentration of 190 IJs/cm2. The most susceptible larval stages were the 3rd and 4th instars. In the in vivo test for production of A. ipsilon larvae, no difference was observed between the two isolates. In the greenhouse test, the isolate IBCB-n02 was the only one that differed from the control treatment.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se com este trabalho determinar a frequência de animais soropositivos para Leptospira spp., Toxoplasma gondii e Neospora caninum em cães do Estado da Paraíba, Nordeste do Brasil, bem como identificar fatores de risco. Foram amostrados 1.043 soros de cães procedentes de cinco centros urbanos considerados polos regionais: João Pessoa, Campina Grande, Patos, Sousa e Cajazeiras. Para o diagnóstico sorológico da infecção por Leptospira spp. foi utilizada a soroaglutinação microscópica (SAM) enquanto que para detecção de anticorpos anti-T. gondii e N. caninum empregou-se a reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI). Noventa e sete cães apresentaram aglutininas anti-Leptospiraspp., resultando em frequência de 9,3% (IC 95% = 7,5-11,1%). Os sorovares de maior frequência foram Icterohaemorragiae (47,4%), Copenhageni (16,5%), Bratislava (11,3%), Canicola (10,3%) e Pomona (6,2%). Observou-se soropositividade de 22,1% (231/1.043; IC 95% = 19,6-24,7%) e 7,7% (80/1.043; IC 95% = 6,1-9,3%) para T. gondii e N. caninum, respectivamente. Idade >48 meses (OR=2,92), raça não definida (OR=1,94) e criação com acesso à rua (OR=1,57) foram apontados como fatores de risco para infecção por Leptospira spp. Para toxoplasmose, as categorias idade >48 meses (OR=1,74), alimentação com comida caseira (OR=2,24), alimentação com ração e comida caseira (OR=2,34) e contato com gatos (OR=1,57) foram consideradas fatores de risco, enquanto que a criação com acesso à rua (OR=2,62) foi fator de risco para N. caninum. Conclui-se que cães de cinco centros urbanos do Estado da Paraíba estão expostos às infecções por Leptospiraspp., T. gondii e N. caninum, evidenciadas pela detecção de anticorpos, bem como sugere-se melhor manejo alimentar, controle no acesso a ambientes externos e destino adequado das fezes de gatos.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of seropositive animals for Leptospiraspp., Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in dogs from Paraiba state, northeastern Brazil, and to identify risk factors. A total of 1,043 sera were sampled from dogs from five urban centers considered as regional poles: João Pessoa, Campina Grande, Patos, Sousa and Cajazeiras. For the serological diagnosis of Leptospira spp. infection the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was used, and for detecting anti-T. gondii and N. caninum antibodies the indirect fluorescent antiboy test (IFAT) was carried out. Ninety-seven dogs showed anti-Leptospira spp. agglutinins, resulting in a frequency of 9.3% (95% CI=7.5; 11.1%). The most frequente serovars were Icterohaemorragiae (47.4%), Copenhageni (16.5%), Bratislava (11.3%), Canicola (10.3%) and Pomona (6.2%). The seropositivities for T. gondii and N. caninum were 22.1% (231/1043; 95% CI=19.6; 24.7%) and 7.7% (80/1043; 95% CI=6.1; 9.3%) respectively. Age >48 months (OR=2.92), mixed breed (OR=1.94) and access to street (OR=1.57) were identified as risk factors for Leptospira spp. infection. For toxoplasmosis, the categories age >48 months (OR=1.74), homemade food (OR=2.24), comercial and homemade food (OR=2.34) and contact with cats (OR=1.57) were considered risk factors, while access to street (OR=2.62) was risk fator for N. caninum. We conclude that dogs from five urban centers in Paraiba state are exposed to Leptospira spp., T. gondii and N. caninum infections, evidenced by antibody detection, as well as it is suggested a better feed management, control of outside home environment access and proper disposal of cat feces.
