Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

Abstract Objective: to describe three oral health indicators-the proportions of tooth loss, dental visits, and toothbrushing frequency-according to job market insertion in 2019. Methods: a descriptive study with data from the 2019 Brazilian National Health Survey (PNS). We included individuals aged from 18 years or older, irrespective of employment status. We calculated the oral health indicators, as well as their respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Results: the sample was composed by 54,343 workers, 29,889 (53.9%) being male. The proportion of 13 or more teeth loss was higher in the informal employment sector [10.5% (95%CI: 9.8;11.2)]. The proportion of people that did not consult a dentist in the previous 12 months was higher in the informal sector [51.9% (95%CI: 50.8;53.0)] and among unemployed [52.4% (95%CI: 49.6;55.2)]. Lower toothbrushing frequency was observed in the informal workers’ group [5.2% (95%CI: 4.7;5.6)] and among male workers [7.5% (95%CI: 6.8;8.2)]. Conclusion: worse oral health indicators were found among informal and unemployed workers, in addition to gender inequalities.

Resumo Objetivo: descrever três indicadores de saúde bucal - as proporções de perda dentária, de consulta ao dentista e de frequência de escovação dentária - segundo o tipo de inserção na força de trabalho, no ano de 2019. Métodos: estudo descritivo realizado com dados da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde de 2019. Foram incluídos indivíduos empregados ou desempregados, com 18 anos ou mais. Foram calculados os indicadores de saúde bucal, assim como seus respectivos intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC95%). Resultados: a amostra foi composta por 54.343 trabalhadores, sendo 29.889 (53,9%) do sexo masculino. A proporção de perda de 13 ou mais dentes foi maior no setor informal [10,5% (IC95%: 9,8;11,2)]. A proporção de pessoas que não consultaram um dentista nos últimos 12 meses foi maior no setor informal [51,9% (IC95%: 50,8;53,0)] e entre os desempregados [52,4% (IC95%: 49,6;55,2)]. Menor frequência de escovação dentária foi observada no grupo com vínculo informal de emprego [5,2% (IC95%: 4,7;5,6)] e entre indivíduos do sexo masculino [7,5% (IC95%: 6,8;8,2)]. Conclusão: piores indicadores foram encontrados entre os trabalhadores do setor informal ou desempregados e foram observadas desigualdades entre os sexos.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the nursing management models of university hospitals in Brazil, Portugal and Spain. Material and Method: Qualitative research with a comprehensive and exploratory approach, developed with 39 nurses in three different hospitals from September 2019 to February 2020. The thematic analysis proposed by Minayo was adopted as a method. Results: Two categories were identified: when the nursing management model promotes disagreements, with emphasis on the centralization and fragmentation of work; intensification and flexibility of the workday; work demotivation; and lack of incentive for training and qualification. And the second category when the nursing management model promotes agreements emphasizing teamwork, continuing education as a management tool, as well as participatory and shared management initiatives. Conclusion: This study will probably favor future discussions on agreements and disagreements regarding nursing management in its various training and working settings, thus contributing to the consolidation of the nursing profession in management participation. Moreover, it can also help promote improvements in nursing management and the professional recognition of the nurse manager.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Analizar los modelos de gestión de enfermería de hospitales universitarios de Brasil, Portugal y España. Material y Método: Investigación de tipo cualitativo, con enfoque integral y exploratorio, desarrollada con 39 enfermeros en tres hospitales diferentes, entre septiembre 2019 a febrero 2020. Se adoptó como método el análisis temático propuesto por Minayo. Resultados: Se evidenciaron dos categorías: cuando el modelo de gestión de enfermería promueve desacuerdos, con énfasis en la centralización y fragmentación del trabajo, intensificación y flexibilización de la jornada laboral, desmotivación en el proceso de trabajo y débil incentivo para la formación y la calificación; y la segunda categoría, cuando el modelo de gestión de enfermería prevé encuentros, enfatizando el trabajo en equipo, la educación continua como herramienta de gestión y las iniciativas de gestión participativa y compartida. Conclusión: Este estudio favorecerá probablemente futuras discusiones sobre los encuentros y desencuentros de la gestión de enfermería en sus diversos espacios de formación y actuación, contribuyendo de esta manera a la consolidación de la enfermería en la participación de la gestión. En consecuencia, podrá impulsar mejoras en el área y la valorización profesional del enfermero gestor.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar os modelos de gestão em enfermagem dos hospitais universitários do Brasil, Portugal e Espanha. Material e Método: Pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa, de cunho compreensivista e exploratório, desenvolvida com 39 enfermeiros, em três diferentes hospitais, no período de setembro de 2019 a fevereiro de 2020. Adotou-se como método a análise temática proposta por Minayo. Resultados: Foram evidenciadas duas categorias: Quando o modelo de gestão em enfermagem promove desencontros, com destaque para a centralização e fragmentação do trabalho; intensificação e flexibilização da jornada de trabalho; desmotivação no processo de trabalho; e frágil incentivo para formação e qualificação. E a segunda categoria quando o modelo de gestão em enfermagem proporciona encontros, sendo enfatizados o trabalho em equipe, a educação permanente enquanto ferramenta de gestão e as iniciativas de gestão participativa e compartilhada. Conclusão: Possivelmente, este estudo favorecerá discussões futuras sobre os encontros e desencontros da gestão em enfermagem em seus diversos espaços de formação e atuação, no sentido de contribuir para consolidação da enfermagem na participação da gestão. Consequentemente, poderá impulsionar melhorias na área e a valorização profissional do enfermeiro gestor.

Resumo Fundamento A síndrome metabólica é caracterizada por um conjunto de comorbidades. Durante a síndrome, observam-se alterações estruturais no sistema cardiovascular, especialmente o remodelamento vascular. Uma das causas predisponentes para essas alterações é a inflamação crônica oriunda de mudanças na estrutura e composição do tecido adiposo perivascular. Atorvastatina é eficaz no tratamento das dislipidemias. No entanto, seus efeitos pleiotrópicos não são totalmente compreendidos. Supõe-se que, durante a síndrome metabólica, ocorre remodelamento vascular e que o tratamento com atorvastatina pode ser capaz de atenuar tal condição. Objetivos Avaliar os efeitos do tratamento com atorvastatina sobre o remodelamento vascular em modelo experimental de síndrome metabólica. Métodos Camundongos Swiss receberam dieta controle ou dieta hiperglicídica por 18 semanas. Após 14 semanas de dieta, os camundongos foram tratados com veículo ou atorvastatina (20mg/kg) durante 4 semanas. Foram avaliados o perfil nutricional e metabólico por testes bioquímicos; análise estrutural da artéria aorta por histologia e dosagem de citocinas por ensaio imunoenzimático. O nível de significância aceitável para os resultados foi p <0,05. Resultados A dieta hiperglicídica promoveu o desenvolvimento de síndrome metabólica. Tal fato culminou no remodelamento hipertrófico do músculo liso vascular e tecido adiposo perivascular. Além disso, houve aumentos das citocinas TNF-α e IL-6 circulantes e no tecido adiposo perivascular. O tratamento com atorvastatina reduziu significativamente os danos metabólicos, o remodelamento vascular e os níveis de citocinas. Conclusão Atorvastatina ameniza danos metabólicos associados à síndrome metabólica induzida por dieta hiperglicídica, além de atenuar o remodelamento vascular, sendo esses efeitos associados à redução de citocinas pró-inflamatórias.

Abstract Background Metabolic syndrome is characterized by an array of comorbidities. During this syndrome, structural changes are observed in the cardiovascular system, especially vascular remodeling. One of the predisposing causes for these changes is chronic inflammation resulting from changes in the structure and composition of perivascular adipose tissue. Atorvastatin is effective in the treatment of dyslipidemias. However, its pleiotropic effects have not been completely understood. We hypothesize that metabolic syndrome may lead to vascular remodeling and that atorvastatin therapy may be able to attenuate this condition. Objectives To assess the effects of atorvastatin therapy on vascular remodeling in an experimental model of metabolic syndrome. Methods Swiss mice received a control diet or a hyperglicemic diet for 18 weeks. After 14 weeks of diet, mice were treated with vehicle or atorvastatin (20mg/kg) during for 4 weeks. Nutritional and metabolic profiles were assessed by biochemical tests; moreover, a histological assessment of aorta structure was conducted, and cytokine levels were determined by the immunoenzyme assay. The acceptable level of significance for the results was set at p<0.05. Results Hyperglicemic diet promoted the development of metabolic syndrome. It indeed culminated in hypertrophic remodeling of vascular smooth muscle and perivascular adipose tissue. Furthermore, there were increases in the levels of circulating TNF-α and IL-6 and in the perivascular adipose tissue. Atorvastatin therapy significantly reduced metabolic damages, vascular remodeling, and cytokine levels. Conclusion Atorvastatin attenuate metabolic damages associated with metabolic syndrome induced by hyperglycemic diet, in addition to attenuating vascular remodeling; both effects are associated with reduced levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the association of oral health indicators and social variables on the frequency of visit to the dentist by persons with intellectual disability (ID). Material and Methods: The study comprised a sample consisting of 149 participants with ID, aged from 11 to 29 years, from non-governmental institutions. Semi-structured interviews were held to collect sociodemographic and psychosocial information with their parents/guardians, followed by oral health evaluations in accordance with World Health Organization criteria. Crude analyses and multiple analysis were conducted to test whether oral health indicators and social data were predictors of the visit to dental care services. Results: In the multiple logistic regression model, individuals with lower DMF-t (OR=3.13; 95% CI=1.40-6.97) and those with less crowded housing (OR=2.33; 95% CI=1.06-5.12) presented less frequency of visits to oral health services. Conclusion: DMFT and crowded housing are associated to the frequency of persons with intellectual disability to dental care as well as this outcome measure affects the oral health of persons with ID. Therefore, identifying limiting factors to dental care of persons with intellectual disability is needed so that this group can receive adequate attention.

RESUMO O amendoim (Arachis hypogaea L.) é uma planta oleaginosa que se destaca no Nordeste Brasileiro devido a sua adaptação as condições climáticas. No entanto, existem escassas informações sobre as características das cultivares existentes na região quanto ao seu comportamento em situações de estresses e as mudanças bioquímicas das sementes. O objetivo do trabalho foi estudar as alterações fisiológicas e bioquímicas em sementes envelhecidas de amendoim. Os experimentos foram conduzidos nos Laboratórios de Análise de Sementes (LAS) e Biotecnologia do CENLAG da Universidade Federal do Agreste de Pernambuco – (UFAPE). Foram utilizadas sementes de duas cultivares: IAC Tatu ST e Caiana, envelhecidas artificialmente a 42 °C e 100 % de umidade relativa durante 96 horas, sendo retiradas amostras a cada 24 horas para avaliações fisiológicas e bioquímicas. A qualidade fisiológica e o metabolismo oxidativo foram avaliados por meio dos testes de germinação e vigor, e modificações enzimáticas (CAT e APX), respectivamente. O aumento do período de envelhecimento acelerado resultou em alterações fisiológicas e bioquímicas ocorridas nas sementes das duas cultivares, refletindo o efeito da deterioração causado pelo envelhecimento acelerado nas sementes de amendoim. A atividade das enzimas nas sementes envelhecidas de amendoim foi específica em função das cultivares, sendo que a atividade da enzima catalase foi reduzida nas sementes da cultivar Caiana, com menor vigor.

ABSTRACT Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an oleaginous plant that is well-adapted to the climatic conditions in the northeast of Brazil. However, there is little information on the existing cultivars in the region with regards to their behavior under stress conditions and the biochemical changes of the seeds. The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological and biochemical changes in aged peanut seeds. The experiments were conducted at the Seed Analysis Laboratories (LAS) and Biotechnology of CENLAG, Federal University of Agreste of Pernambuco (UFAPE). Seeds of two cultivars, IAC Tatu ST and Caiana, were artificially aged at 42 °C and 100 % relative humidity for 96 h, and removed every 24 h for evaluation. Physiological potential was evaluated using germination, vigor test, and enzymatic modifications as the parameters. An increase in the accelerated aging period resulted in physiological and biochemical changes in the seeds of both cultivars. The activity of the enzymes in the aged peanut seeds was specific to the cultivar used, and the seeds of the cultivar Caiana had less vigor and decreased activity of the enzyme catalase.

ABSTRACT Chagas disease (CD) is a neglected tropical highly morbid disease that can have a negative impact on the quality of life (QoL). The purpose of this study was to conduct an integrative review to analyze the QoL of patients with CD in the chronic phase of the disease, as well as the instruments used and the effect of different interventions. The review was carried out based on the criteria and recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes guideline (PRISMA) using the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Science Direct databases. An analysis of the reference list of the included articles was also carried out. Publications in all languages have been included. Two independent reviewers selected the eligible articles and extracted the data. A total of 1,479 articles were identified, and after applying the inclusion criteria 18 articles were included. Four different instruments were used to assess QoL and the most used was the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLWHFQ) [33.3% (n = 6)]. Investigations involving intervention showed a positive impact on the patients’ QoL, and the Environment domain had the lowest score. Heterogeneity of instruments and lack of methodology standardization for assessing QoL was observed. QoL proved to be an important indicator for the planning and monitoring of patients with CD, however it is suggested that the instruments for its assessment should be the ones recommended by the validation studies. This process will allow the comparison of data between investigations.

Abstract Glutamine is often used to treat metabolic changes associated with anorexia-cachexia syndrome in patients with malignant neoplasms. Walker 256 tumor is an excellent model for studying these changes associated with cancer in different organs, including injuries in testicular functions. However, the effects of supplementing glutamine on testicular morphometry in this model have not yet been investigated. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of L-glutamine supplementation on testicular morphometry in rats transplanted with Walker 256 tumor cells. Forty puberty Wistar rats were divided into four groups: control without L-glutamine (C); control supplemented with L-glutamine (CG); inoculated with Walker 256 tumor cells (WT) and inoculated with Walker 256 tumor cells and supplemented with L-glutamine (WTG). The testicles were removed, weighed, fixed in Bouin, and included in paraffin for histomorphometric analysis. Walker 256 tumor caused quantitative changes in the tubular and intertubular compartments and tunica albuginea, with reductions in the percentages of lumen and tunica albuginea, number of Sertoli cells per gram of testis; number of Leydig cells; percentage of blood vessels and connective tissue in intertubule. However, glutamine supplementation prevented part of these changes caused by the tumor, presenting mainly a protective effect on the tunica albuginea and percentage of blood and lymph vessels in the intertubule. These results indicate the potential of L-glutamine was able to recover for testicular dysfunction associated with cancer.

Resumo Objetivo: Revisar sistematicamente as evidências relacionadas aos desfechos nutricionais e cardiometabólicos em crianças nascidas a termo e pequenas para idade gestacional e a relação com o aleitamento materno. Fonte de dados: Dois revisores independentes fizeram buscas nas bases de dados MEDLINE,LILACS, SciELO, EMBASE sem restrições de tempo ou idioma. Foi usada a ferramenta PRISMA sendo incluídos estudos que avaliaram crianças nascidas a termo e pequenas para idade gestacional, amamentadas e com avaliação dos desfechos cardiometabólicos. Foram excluídos estudos com prematuros, aqueles que não trouxessem informação do aleitamento materno, ausência de avaliação das variáveis de desfecho. Também não foram incluídos artigos de revisão, editorial e série de casos. Síntese dos dados: Foram encontrados apenas sete artigos que preencheram os critérios citados acima. Houve uma grande variabilidade na forma de avaliação, assim como na idade dessas crianças. Foi evidenciado que o aleitamento materno promoveu crescimento sem alteração de composição corporal e sem resistência insulínica aumentada nas crianças com aleitamento materno exclusivo, quando comparadas com crianças que receberam fórmula láctea de maior teor calórico, exceto por um artigo que observou aumento de massa gorda nos amamentados exclusivamente. Conclusão: Aleitamento materno parece ser uma forma segura de alimentação para crianças nascidas a termo e pequenas para idade gestacional sem associação com desfechos deletérios em curto prazo. O estímulo ao aleitamento materno nessas populações parece ser um caminho de prevenção aos agravos à saúde associados ao alto risco de doenças crônicas não transmissíveis e à obesidade.

Abstract Objective: To systematically review evidence related to nutritional and cardiometabolic outcomes in children born at term and small for gestational age and the association with breastfeeding. Source of data: Two independent reviewers searched the MEDLINE, LILACS, SciELO, and Embase databases without time or language restrictions. The PRISMA tool was used, and studies that evaluated infants born at term and small for gestational age, breastfed, and with an evaluation of cardiometabolic outcomes were included. Studies with preterm infants, those that did not have information on breastfeeding, and those with lack of evaluation of the outcome variables were excluded. Also excluded were review articles, editorials, and series of cases. Summary of data: Only seven articles were found that met the abovementioned criteria. There was a great variability in the type of evaluation, as well as in the age of these children. It was demonstrated that breastfeeding promoted growth without body composition alteration and without increased insulin resistance in children with exclusive breastfeeding, when compared to children receiving a higher calorie formula, except for one article that observed an increase in fat mass in exclusively breastfed children. Conclusion: Breastfeeding seems to be a safe feeding practice for infants born at term and small for gestational age, showing no association with deleterious short-term outcomes. Breastfeeding stimulation in these populations seems to be a way of preventing the health problems associated with the high risk of chronic noncommunicable diseases and obesity.

Resumo Objetivos: compreender o contexto cultural da instituição hospitalar e sua relação com a prática autônoma do enfermeiro obstetra na assistência ao parto de risco habitual. Métodos: pesquisa etnográfica desenvolvida em três maternidades públicas do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, com três gestores e 23 enfermeiros obstetras. Resultados: diferentes aspectos de ordem cultural, organizacional e estrutural da instituição hospitalar interferem diretamente na prática autônoma do enfermeiro obstetra. Dentre estes aspectos, a valorização profissional na assistência ao parto de risco habitual contribui para a autonomia do profissional em questão. Conclusões: constatou-se que o enfermeiro obstetra vivencia distintos contextos de atuação, os quais interferem diretamente na sua autonomia na assistência ao parto de risco habitual e no seu poder de decisão. Faz-se necessário, então, desvencilhar-se das relações de domínio e submissão, ainda impostas pela hegemonia médica.

Abstract Objectives: to understand the cultural context presented in hospitals and its relation to the obstetric nurse's autonomous practice on low-risk childbirth care. Methods: ethnographic research performed in three public maternities in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Three managers and twenty-three obstetric nurses participated in this research. Results: distinctive on cultural, organizational and structural aspects of the hospital institution interfering directly with the obstetric nurse's autonomous practice. Among these aspects, professional appreciation on low-risk childbirth care contributes for the nurse's autonomy Conclusions: it was noticed that obstetric nurses undergo different contexts of action, which directly interfere with their autonomy on low-risk childbirth care and their decisionmaking abilities. It is necessary, then, to eradicate the relation of dominance and submission that it is still imposed by medical hegemony.

Os Centros de Especialidades Odontológicas (CEOs) foram criados dentro do contexto da Política Nacional de Saúde Bucal e a principal função desses estabelecimentos é servir como unidades de referência em atenção secundária à saúde bucal no SUS, devendo oferecer pelo menos os serviços de estomatologia, periodontia especializada, cirurgia oral menor, endodontia e atendimento a pacientes com necessidades especiais. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade dos Centros de Especialidades Odontológicas da região serrana do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, por meio da satisfação dos pacientes com necessidades especiais ou de seus acompanhantes. Os dados foram coletados de 159 usuários utilizando um questionário semiestruturado individual auto-aplicado padronizado. Os resultados indicaram uma avaliação positiva na maioria das dimensões, exceto na acessibilidade. Diferenças significativas (p < 0.05) foram observadas entre os serviços nas seguintes dimensões de qualidade: acessibilidade, resolutividade, qualidade técnico-científica, eficiência, eficácia e aceitabilidade. A análise dos dados qualitativos, por meio da técnica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC) e das representações sociais, apresentou cinco ideias centrais sobre a satisfação e insatisfação dos usuários com os serviços dos CEOs (cuidado humanizado, resolutividade do serviço, competência profissional, infraestrutura e organização do serviço, acesso aos serviços). Em conclusão, a maioria dos pacientes com necessidades especiais e seus acompanhantes estavam satisfeitos com os serviços dos CEOs, embora houvesse diferenças significativas entre os serviços dos CEOs em relação à satisfação dos indivíduos.

The Dental Specialties Centers (CEOs) were created within the context of the National Oral Health Policy, and the main function of these establishments is to serve as units of reference in secondary oral health care in the Brazilian national health system (SUS), and they must offer at least the services of stomatology, specialized periodontology, minor oral surgery, endodontics, and attendance to patients with special needs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the CEOs in the mountain region of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, in the perspective of the patients with special needs care or their companion’s satisfaction. Data were collected from 159 users by using a standardized self-applied individual semi-structured questionnaire. The results indicated a positive evaluation in most of the dimensions, except the accessibility dimension. Significant differences ( p < 0.05) were observed between the services of the following dimensions of quality: accessibility, resoluteness, technical-scientific quality, efficiency, efficacy, and acceptability. The analysis of qualitative data, through the discourse of the collective subject technique (DCS) and social representations, showed five central ideas about users’ satisfaction and dissatisfaction with CEOs services (humanized health care, resoluteness of the service, professional competence, infrastructure and organization of the service, access to the services). In conclusion, most patients with special needs care and their companions were satisfied with specialized dental centers (SDC) services, although there were significant differences among SDCs services in relation to individuals’ satisfaction.

Resumo: Vários fatores interferem na eficiência do teste de condutividade elétrica, com destaque para teor de água inicial e temperatura durante a embebição. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito do teor de água inicial das sementes de ervilha e da temperatura na eficiência do teste de condutividade elétrica. Utilizaram-se seis lotes de ervilha ‘Mikado’ que foram submetidos a testes para caracterização inicial. No primeiro ensaio, baseado na umidade inicial das amostras, foi ajustado o teor de água para 9, 11, 13 e 15% e, posteriormente, foram submetidas ao teste de condutividade elétrica. No segundo ensaio, a água para embebição das sementes foi mantida por 24 horas a 10, 15, 20, 25 e 30 °C e, após este período, adicionou-se às sementes e foram colocadas para embeber por mais 24 horas nas referidas temperaturas. Observou-se que teor de água inicial e temperatura da água durante a embebição influenciaram nos resultados do teste de condutividade elétrica. Este teste deve ser realizado com água destilada previamente mantida por 24 horas a 25 °C para estabilização da temperatura, posteriormente as sementes, com teor de água entre 11 e 15%, colocadas para embeber na temperatura de 25 °C, mantidas nesta temperatura por 24 horas.

Abstract: Several factors affect the electrical conductivity test efficiency, with emphasis given to the initial water content and the temperature during imbibition. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the initial water content of pea seeds and the temperature on the electrical conductivity test efficiency. Six lots of ‘Mikado’ pea were used, which were previously tested for initial characterization. In the first trial, based on the initial value of the samples, the seed moisture content was adjusted to 9, 11, 13 and 15% and then the seeds were submitted to the electrical conductivity test. In the second trial, the water for seed imbibition was kept for 24 hours at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 ºC, and after that time the seeds were added and soaked for other 24 hours at the temperatures already mentioned. It was observed that initial seed moisture content and water temperature during imbibition influenced the results of the electrical conductivity test. This test should be carried out with distilled water, previously maintained for 24 hours at 25 °C for temperature stabilization. Then, the seeds with seed moisture content between 11 and 15% should be put to soak at 25 °C, and maintained at this temperature for 24 hours.

A pentassomia do cromossomo x é uma síndrome rara, de incidência desconhecida e com poucos relatos na literatura científica, especialmente no que diz respeito à atenção odontológica para pacientes portadores da mesma. O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar um caso de atenção odontológica a uma jovem com pentassomia do cromossomo x, que apresentava fenda palatina, dentes inclusos, má-oclusão, alta atividade de cárie, gengivite e múltiplas perdas dentárias devido à cárie. Apesar das dificuldades de se realizar o tratamento dentário devido aos movimentos involuntários e a não colaboração inicial da paciente, houve total viabilidade da atenção odontológica em âmbito ambulatorial, observando-se significativa cooperação, formação de vínculo e adesão ao tratamento pela mesma e seus responsáveis, o que gerou sucesso terapêutico.

Pentasomy of the x chromosome is a rare syndrome of unknown incidence and there are few reports in the scientific literature, especially in terms of dental care for patients with this syndrome. The aim of this study was to report the dental care given to an adolescent with pentasomy of the X chromosome. The patient presented a cleft palate, impacted teeth, malocclusion, high caries activity, gingivitis and multiple tooth loss due to caries. Despite the difficulties of carrying out the dental work due to involuntary movements and the initial lack of collaboration from the patient the overall dental care was completed on an outpatient basis. The therapeutic success of the treatment was strongly supported by the significant cooperation and relationship that grew up along the period of the treatment, as well as the desire to have the treatment done by both the patient and her parents.

Objetivo A altura sentada (sitting height, SH) é um importante parâmetro na avaliação de crianças com distúrbios do crescimento e da puberdade. Além disso, tem sido vista como um marcador de risco cardiovascular, aumentado em adultos com pernas relativamente curtas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a relação entre proporções corporais e marcadores de risco cardiovascular em crianças. Sujeitos e métodos: Oitocentas e dezessete crianças de 6 a 13 anos foram avaliadas. Peso, altura, altura sentada (SH), altura sentada/total (SH/H), índice de massa corpórea (IMC) e pressão arterial (PA) foram avaliados e convertidos em Z escores ajustados para sexo e idade. Análises estatísticas apropriadas foram desenvolvidas. Resultados Houve associação positiva do Z-IMC com o SH e o SH/H (p<0,001). Crianças com excesso de peso demonstraram Z-SH 0,8 superior ao de crianças eutróficas (p<0,001). O Z-SH também apresentou correlação direta com o Z-PA, mas essa associação não foi independente da relação entre IMC e PA quando analisada por meio de regressão linear múltipla. Conclusão Medidas de SH são fortemente associadas ao IMC e PA em crianças, embora a associação entre SH e PA seja provavelmente dependente da associação de ambas as variáveis com o IMC. Essa é uma importante informação para a correta interpretação dos valores de SH em crianças.

Objective Sitting height (SH) is an important parameter in the evaluation of children with growth and pubertal disorders. Besides this, it has been viewed as a biomarker of cardiovascular risk, which is increased in adults with relatively short legs. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between body proportions and cardiovascular risk markers in children. Subjects and methods: Eight hundred and seventeen children aged 6‐13 years were evaluated. Weight, height, sitting-height (SH), sitting-height/height (SH/H), body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure (BP) were assessed and converted to standard deviation scores (SDS) for age and sex. Statistical analyses were performed. Results There was a positive association of BMI SDS with SH and SH/H SDS (p<0.001). Overweight children showed SH 0.8 SDS superior to eutrophic children (p<0.001). SH SDS was also directly related to BP SDS, but this association was not independent of the association between obesity and BP when assessed by multiple regression analyzes. Conclusion Measures of SH are strongly associated with BMI and BP in children, although the association between SH and BP is probably dependent on the association of both those variables with BMI. This is (an) important information for correct interpretation of SH values in children.

This is a cross-sectional study that aimed to characterize the profile of adolescent mothers, and to compare social and obstetric characteristics, as well as characteristics of the newborns, among a group of early adolescents (10-14 years old) and late adolescents (15-19 years old), in the city of Bandeirantes, Paraná, Brazil, from 1995 to 2009. Information was collected in June 2012, from the DATASUS database. The results evidenced that, in the period of the study, there were 8,364 deliveries, out of which 1,833 (21.9%) were from adolescents - 73 (3.9%) in early ones, and 1,760 (96.1%) in late ones. Associated with pregnancy in early adolescence, there were characteristics like the mother's lower level of schooling, absence of a partner, smaller number of prenatal care visits, and low birth weight. The findings reiterate that worse socio-demographic conditions influence the occurrence and prognosis of adolescent pregnancy, reinforcing the importance health professionals have in the implementation of strategies that decrease its re (occurrence).

Estudio transversal que tuvo por objetivo caracterizar el perfil de madres adolescentes y comparar características sociales, obstétricas y del recién nascido entre el grupo de adolescentes precoces (10 a 14 años) y tardías (15 a 19 años), en el municipio de Bandeirantes, Paraná, de 1995 a 2009. Las informaciones fueron obtenidas en junio de 2012, en el banco de datos del DATASUS. Los resultados evidenciaron que, en el periodo en estudio, ocurrieron 8.364 partos, de los cuales 1.833 (21,9%) fueron en adolescentes, siendo 73 (3,9%) entre las precoces y 1.760 (96,1%) entre las tardías. Fueron asociadas a la gestación en la adolescencia precoz, características como: baja escolaridad materna, ausencia de compañero, poco número de consultas de prenatal y bajo peso al nacer. Los resultados apuntan que malas condiciones sociales y demográficas influencían la ocurrencia y el prognóstico de la gravidez en la adolescencia, destacando la importancia de la implantación de estratégias que ayuden a disminuir la (re)ocurrencia por parte de los profesionales de salud.
