ABSTRACT SAFER (Simple Algorithm for Evapotranspiration Retrieving) is a relatively new algorithm applied successfully to estimate actual crop evapotranspiration (ET) at different spatial scales of different crops in Brazil. However, its use for monitoring irrigated crops is scarce and needs further investigation. This study assessed the performance of SAFER to estimate ET of irrigated corn in a Brazilian semiarid region. The study was conducted in São Desidério, Bahia State, Brazil, in corn-cropped areas in no-tillage systems and irrigated by central pivots. SAFER algorithm with original regression coefficients (a = 1.8 and b = –0.008) was initially tested during the growing seasons of 2014, 2015, and 2016. SAFER performed very poorly for estimating corn ET, with RMSD values greater than 1.18 mm d –1 for 12 fields analyzed and NSE values < 0 in most fields. To improve estimates, SAFER regression coefficients were calibrated (using 2014 and 2015 data) and validated with 2016 data, with the resulting coefficients a and b equal to 0.32 and –0.0013, respectively. SAFER performed well for ET estimation after calibration, with r 2 and NSE values equal to 0.91 and RMSD = 0.469 mm d –1 . SAFER also showed good performance (r 2 = 0.86) after validation, with the lowest RMSD (0.58 mm d –1 ) values for the set of 14 center pivots in this growing season. The results support the use of calibrated SAFER algorithm as a tool for estimating water consumption in irrigated corn fields in semiarid conditions.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a aplicação do escaneamento a laser aerotransportado (ALS) na realização de inventário de povoamentos de eucalipto, em larga escala, por meio do método de individualização de árvores, bem como propor um novo método para estimativa dos diâmetros das árvores em função das alturas obtidas a partir da nuvem de pontos. O estudo foi conduzido em floresta de 1,681 ha, composta por oito povoamentos de eucalipto com idades entre quatro e sete anos. Após o escaneamento, foram obtidas as alturas das árvores pelo algoritmo de máximos locais, e o estoque total de madeira, pela soma dos volumes individuais. Para determinar os diâmetros das árvores, foram utilizadas regressões ajustadas a partir de dados medidos em parcelas de inventário. Os resultados foram comparados às estimativas obtidas via amostragem de campo. O sistema de equações proposto é adequado para ser aplicado aos dados de altura derivados da nuvem de pontos do ALS. O método de individualização de árvores com o filtro de máximos locais é eficiente para estimar o número de árvores e o estoque de madeira a partir dos dados do ALS, desde que os resultados sejam previamente calibrados com o inventário de campo.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the application of airborne laser scanning (ALS) to a large-scale eucalyptus stand inventory by the method of individual trees, as well as to propose a new method to estimate tree diameter as a function of the height obtained from point clouds. The study was carried out in a forest area of 1,681 ha, consisting of eight eucalyptus stands with ages varying from four to seven years. After scanning, tree heights were obtained using the local maxima algorithm, and total wood stock by summing up individual volumes. To determine tree diameters, regressions fit using data measured in the inventory plots were used. The results were compared with the estimates obtained from field sampling. The equation system proposed is adequate to be applied to the tree height data derived from ALS point clouds. The tree individualization approach by local maxima filters is efficient to estimate number of trees and wood stock from ALS data, as long as the results are previously calibrated with field data.

RESUMO De acordo com a Agência Nacional das Águas (ANA), a escassez de água vem sendo um problema brasileiro desde 2012 e está diretamente relacionado com a conservação das bacias hidrográficas. É possível monitorar as mudanças da paisagem e conservação dessas bacias com imagens provenientes de sensores orbitais. O trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a dinâmica espacial de fragmentos de Florestas Estacionais Semideciduais (FES) na bacia do Rio Turvo Sujo, em Minas Gerais, no sudeste do Brasil, entre os anos de 2003 e 2016, bem como analisar sua relação com o relevo. Foram utilizadas imagens da série Landsat com correções geométrica, radiométrica e atmosférica. Para o processamento, amostras de cinco classes de uso e cobertura da terra foram coletadas a partir de composições RGB das imagens. As imagens foram classificadas por Máxima Verossimilhança e as exatidões globais, matriz de confusão e erros de comissão e omissão por classe foram obtidas na validação. Em 2003 a FES ocupava uma área de 6.956 hectares, com fragmentações acentuadas. Entre 2003 e 2016 as áreas de FES tiveram um aumento de 42% (3.053 hectares de regeneração), cobrindo 10.009 hectares da bacia em estudo em 2016. Os fragmentos de FES apresentaram maior concentração nas faces Sul, Sudeste, Sudoeste e Oeste em ambos os anos de estudo. Contudo a regeneração florestal entre esses anos não seguiu o mesmo padrão, ocupando semelhantemente todas as faces de exposição com exceção dos terrenos planos, que ocupam apenas 0,03% da bacia em questão. Este é um aspecto relevante e positivo, que deve ser monitorado, tendo em vista a necessidade de conservação de todas as faces do relevo para manutenção da disponibilidade e qualidade dos recursos hídricos nas bacias hidrográficas.

ABSTRACT The Agência Nacional das Águas (ANA) states that Brazil faces a water shortage problem since 2012, and it is linked with the conservation of the country’s watersheds directly. It is possible to track the landscape changes and its conservation state through satellite images. This study aims to analyze the spatial dynamics of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest (FES) fragments in the basin of the river Turvo Sujo, in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, between the years of 2013 and 2016, and how this dynamic relates to the terrain aspect. In order to accomplish that, we used images of the Landsat series with geometric, radiometric and atmospheric corrections. For processing those images, samples of five categories of land cover and use were collected from RGB compositions. Maximum Likelihood was used to classify the images, and the overall accuracy, the confusion matrix, and the User’s and Producer’s accuracies per category were later obtained during the validation process. In 2003 the SSE occupied an area of 6.956 hectares, with highly fragmented disposition. Between 2003 and 2016 the native forest increased 42% (about 3.053 hectares of regrowth within 13 years), resulting in a total of 10.009 hectares in 2016. The fragments of Semideciduous Seasonal Forest are more frequently present in the South, Southeast, Southwest and West aspects in both years, 2003 and 2016. However, the forest regrowth a long those years did not follow that evidence, with the regrowth occurring equally in all the exposition faces, except in the plain terrains, that represents only 0,03% of the studied watershed. That is an evidence relevant and positive, which must be monitored, once it is necessary to conserve all terrain aspects for water availability and quality maintenance within watersheds.

Os atributos florais, a ornitofilia e o sucesso reprodutivo de Palicourea longepedunculata Gardner foram estudados em fragmento de Floresta Atlântica do sudeste do Brasil. Essa espécie é um arbusto distílico que ocorre em sub-bosque úmido de florestas. Em uma área de sete hectares, os indivíduos dos morfos brevistilo e longistilo foram encontrados em uma taxa muito próxima da esperada, 1:1. O período de floração estendeu-se de março (final da estação chuvosa) a setembro, com um pico em maio/junho (estação seca). Os atributos florais dos morfos foram similares, isto é, a floração dos morfos florais foi sincronizada e os números de inflorescências por planta, de flores por inflorescência, de flores abertas por inflorescência e por planta dos morfos foram semelhantes. Os grãos de pólen dos morfos apresentaram tamanho e viabilidade similares. Palicourea longepedunculata é autoincompatível e polinizada principalmente por Phaethornis ruber (Aves, Trochilidae), que realizou 62,07% das ondas de forrageamento. Os morfos apresentaram sucessos reprodutivos similares: os números de frutos por inflorescência foram, em média, 85,7 (longistilo) e 107,1 (brevistilo) e não houve diferença significativa na produção de sementes (uma ou duas) por fruto entre os morfos. Os frutos foram similares em altura, largura e peso.

Floral attributes, ornithophily and reproductive success of Palicourea longepedunculata Gardner were studied in a fragment of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil. This species is a distylous shrub that occurs in wet forest understory. In an area of seven hectares, the frequency of the morphs was found at a ratio very close to the expected 1:1. The flowering period extended from March (end of the rainy season) to September, with a flowering peak in May/June (dry season). The floral attributes of the morphs were similar, i.e. , the flowering of the floral morphs was synchronous, and the numbers of inflorescences per plant, flowers per inflorescence, open flowers per inflorescence and per plant of the floral morphs were similar. The pollen grains of the morphs presented similar sizes, as well as their viability. Palicourea longepedunculata is self-incompatible and mainly pollinated by Phaethornis rubber (Aves, Trochilidae), which accounted for 62.07% of the foraging bouts. The reproductive success was similar between morphs: the numbers of fruits per inflorescence were, in average, 85.7 (L-morph) and 107.1 (S-morph) and there was no significant difference in the production of seeds (one or two) per fruit between the morphs. Fruits were similar in height, width and weight.

Este estudo foi desenvolvido na Reserva Mata do Paraíso, pertencente à Universidade Federal de Viçosa. Foram selecionadas 10 clareiras naturais com diferentes tamanhos. No centro das clareiras e numa faixa de 5 m de sub-bosque (entorno) ao redor destas foram obtidas fotografias hemisféricas digitais. Através dessas fotografias, foram calculadas as áreas das clareiras e a sua correspondente abertura de dossel e dos seus entornos. No interior das clareiras e nos seus entornos foram amostrados todos os indivíduos com altura > 1,00 m e diâmetro na altura de 1,30 m do solo (DAP) inferior a 5,00 cm. Constatou-se a predominância de pequenas clareiras com áreas inferiores a 100 m² e com pequena abertura do dossel nas quais predominam as mesmas espécies típicas dos estádios finais de sucessão tolerantes à sombra e abundantes no sub-bosque ao redor dessas clareiras. No conjunto das clareiras foram amostrados 759 indivíduos, distribuídos em 69 espécies pertencentes a 28 famílias botânicas. O índice de diversidade de Shannon (H') das clareiras variou de 1,026 a 3,011. Coffea arabica e Picramnia regnelli foram as espécies mais abundantes tanto no conjunto das clareiras quanto no conjunto dos entornos (sub-bosque). A similaridade florística entre o conjunto das clareiras e o conjunto dos entornos foi alta (Ij = 69%), indicando que as mesmas espécies que regeneram no sub-bosque estão conseguindo fazer o mesmo também no ambiente de clareira. A dominância ecológica de Coffea arabica nos dois ambientes pode, no longo prazo, comprometer a conservação das espécies autóctones desse trecho da floresta.

This study was developed in the Mata do Paraíso Reserve from the Viçosa Federal University. Ten natural gaps of different sizes were selected. Digital hemispherical photographs were obtained from the middle of the gaps, in a 5 m understorey area (surroundings) and neighboring areas. These hemispherical photographs allowed calculating areas corresponding to gaps and their respective canopy openness and surroundings. Inside the gaps and surroundings, all individuals with height > 1.00 m and diameter in height of 1.30 m from the soil (DAP) below 5.00 m were sampled. The predominance of small gaps with areas below 100 m2 and with small canopy openness was verified, as well as the predominance of the same shade-tolerant species typical of the final succession stadiums, which are abundant in the understorey around these gaps. In the set of gaps, 759 individuals were sampled and distributed into 69 species belonging to 28 botanical families. The Shannon diversity index (H') of gaps ranged from 1.026 to 3.011. Coffea arabica and Picramnia regnelli were the most abundant species both in the set of gaps and in the set of surroundings (understorey). The floristic similarity between both sets was high (Ij = 69%), indicating that the same species that regenerate in the sub-wood also regenerate in the gaps environment. At long term, the ecological dominance of Coffea arabica in both environments may impair the conservation of autoctone species in this part of the forest.
