ABSTRACT Objective: Staphylococcus aureus infections remain associated with considerable morbidity and mortality in both hospitals and the community. There is little information regarding the role of ovarian hormones in infections caused by S. aureus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ovariectomy in the immune response induced by S. aureus. Methods: Female mice BALB/c were ovariectomized (OVX) to significantly reduce the level of ovarian hormones. We also used sham-operated animals. The mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with S. aureus. Blood samples were collected for leukocyte count and bacterial quantification. The uterus and spleen were removed and weighed to calculate the uterine and splenic indexes. Lungs were removed and fractionated for immunohistochemical analysis for macrophage detection (anti-CD68) and relative gene expression of IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α by RT-PCR. Results: Ovariectomy enlarged spleen size and generally increased circulating lymphocytes. OVX females experienced a continuation of the initial reduction of lymphocytes and a monocyte and neutrophil late response compared to shams (p ≥ 0.05). Moreover, OVX females showed neutropenia after 168 h of infection (p ≥ 0.05). Macrophage response in the lungs were less pronounced in OVX females in the initial hours of infection (p ≥ 0.01). OVX females showed a higher relative gene expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the lung at the beginning of the infection compared to sham females (p ≥ 0.01). Among the uninfected females, the OVX control females showed a higher expression of IL-6 in the lung compared to the sham control females (p ≥ 0.05). In this model, the lack of ovarian hormones caused a minor increase in circulating leukocytes during the initial stage of infection by S. aureus and increased pulmonary gene expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α. Ovariectomy alone enlarged the spleen and increased circulating lymphocytes. Ovarian hormones acted as immunoprotectors against S. aureus infection.

Abstract Background: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation seems to be a promising option to intensify the rehabilitation and improve the exercise capacity of patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the hemodynamic (heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and mean blood pressure) and respiratory (respiratory rate and oxygen saturation) responses to neuromuscular electrical stimulation in the immediate postoperative period in patients submitted to cardiac surgery and to verify its feasibility and safety. Methods: This is a pilot randomized controlled trial, wherein critical patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery were randomly assigned to a control group, using sham neuromuscular electrical stimulation, or an experimental group, submitted to neuromuscular electrical stimulation sessions (FES), for 60 min, with a 50-Hz frequency, 200-µs pulse duration, time on: 3 s, and time off: 9 s. Data distribution was evaluated by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The analysis of variance was used and a p-value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Thirty patients were included in the study. The neuromuscular electrical stimulation was applied within the first 23.13 ± 5.24 h after cardiac surgery, and no changes were found regarding the hemodynamic and respiratory variables between the patients who underwent neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and those in the control group. Conclusions: In the present study, neuromuscular electrical stimulation did not promote changes in hemodynamic and respiratory responses of patients in the immediate postoperative period of cardiac surgery.

Introdução: A força muscular periférica tem sido pouco explorada na literatura atual no contexto da reabilitação cardiovascular. Objetivo: Avaliar a força muscular periférica de pacientes submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca eletiva. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo observacional e longitudinal. A força muscular periférica foi mensurada por meio de dinamometria isométrica de MMII (extensores e flexores de joelho) em três momentos distintos: pré-operatório (M1), dia da alta da unidade de terapia intensiva (M2) e dia da alta hospitalar (M3). Os participantes receberam atendimento fisioterapêutico pré e pós-operatório durante os dias do internamento, nos períodos matutino e vespertino. Resultados: Foram avaliados 22 pacientes. Os valores de força muscular periférica de extensores de joelho pré-operatórios encontrados foram cerca de 50% menores do que os preditos para a população saudável. Ao comparar a força muscular prévia (M1), com os demais momentos de avaliação, encontrou-se em M2 queda de 29% para o movimento de extensão do joelho e 25% para o movimento de flexão de joelho e queda de 10% para o movimento de extensão do joelho e 13% para o movimento de flexão de joelho em M3 ao comparar com M1. Conclusão: Os valores de força muscular periférica prévia dos pacientes do estudo foram menores do que o predito para a população saudável com a mesma faixa etária. Após o evento cirúrgico, essa redução é ainda mais notável, sendo reestabelecida até o momento da alta hospitalar a valores próximos ao basal.

Introduction: Peripheral muscle strength has been little explored in the literature in the context of cardiac rehabilitation. Objective: To evaluate the peripheral muscle strength of patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery. Methods: This was a longitudinal observational study. The peripheral muscle strength was measured using isometric dynamometry lower limb (knee extensors and flexors) at three different times: preoperatively (M1), the day of discharge (M2) and hospital discharge (M3). Participants received physiotherapy pre and postoperatively during the days of hospitalization during the morning and afternoon. Results: Twenty-two patients were evaluated. The values of peripheral muscle strength of knee extensors preoperative found were about 50% lower than those predicted for the healthy population. When comparing muscle strength prior (M1), with the remaining evaluation, found himself in a fall of 29% for the movement of knee extension and 25% for knee flexion in M2 and a decrease of 10% movement for knee extension and 13% for knee flexion in M3 when comparing with M1. Conclusion: The values of peripheral muscle strength prior of the study patients were lower than predicted for the healthy population of the same age. After the surgical event this reduction is even more remarkable, being reestablished until the time of discharge, to values close to baseline.

INTRODUÇÃO: A cirurgia cardíaca tem sido a intervenção de escolha em muitos casos de doenças cardiovasculares. Pela susceptibilidade a complicações pós-operatórias, a reabilitação cardíaca é indicada. Recursos terapêuticos, como a realidade virtual, tem favorecido o processo reabilitacional. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o uso da realidade virtual na reabilitação funcional de pacientes pós-cirurgia cardíaca. MÉTODOS: Os pacientes foram randomizados em dois grupos, Realidade Virtual (GRV, n=30) e Grupo Controle (GC, n=30). A resposta ao tratamento foi avaliada por meio do Questionário de Medida de Independência Funcional (MIF), Teste de caminhada de 6 minutos e do Perfil de Saúde de Nottingham (PSN). Os questionários foram aplicados no pré e pós-operatório. RESULTADOS: No primeiro dia de pós-operatório, os pacientes de ambos os grupos demonstraram diminuição do desempenho funcional. No entanto, essa perda foi menor no GRV (45,712,3) em relação ao GC (35,0612,09, P<0,05), sem diferença significativa no momento da alta hospitalar (P>0,05). Na avaliação do PSN, foi observada menor intensidade da dor no terceiro momento de avaliação no GRV (P<0,05). Esses pacientes também apresentaram maior nível de energia na primeira avaliação (P<0,05). Não foram encontradas diferenças com significância estatística para reações emocionais, habilidade física e interação social. O tempo de internação foi significativamente menor nos pacientes do GRV (P<0,05), que também apresentaram maior distância percorrida no TC6 (319,9119,3 metros vs. 263,5115,4 metros, P<0,02). CONCLUSÃO: O tratamento com a realidade virtual foi eficaz em proporcionar melhor desempenho funcional pós-operatório.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac surgery has been the intervention of choice in many cases of cardiovascular diseases. Susceptibility to postoperative complications, cardiac rehabilitation is indicated. Therapeutic resources, such as virtual reality has been helping the rehabilitational process. The aim of the study was to evaluate the use of virtual reality in the functional rehabilitation of patients in the postoperative period. METHODS: Patients were randomized into two groups, Virtual Reality (VRG, n = 30) and Control (CG, n = 30). The response to treatment was assessed through the functional independence measure (FIM), by the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP). Evaluations were performed preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: On the first day after surgery, patients in both groups showed decreased functional performance. However, the VRG showed lower reduction (45.712.3) when compared to CG (35.0612.09, P<0.05) in first postoperative day, and no significant difference in performance on discharge day (P>0.05). In evaluating the NHP field, we observed a significant decrease in pain score at third assessment (P<0.05). These patients also had a higher energy level in the first evaluation (P<0.05). There were no differences with statistical significance for emotional reactions, physical ability, and social interaction. The length of stay was significantly shorter in patients of VRG (9.410.5 days vs. 12.2 1 0.9 days, P<0.05), which also had a higher 6MWD (319.9119.3 meters vs. 263.5115.4 meters, P<0.02). CONCLUSION: Adjunctive treatment with virtual reality demonstrated benefits, with better functional performance in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Com este trabalho, buscou-se determinar a influência da luz e da temperatura na germinação de sementes de janaguba. O ensaio foi conduzido no Laboratório de Análises de Sementes do Departamento de Fitotecnia, Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza-CE. Os tratamentos constaram de quatro temperaturas (20ºC, 25ºC, 30ºC e 20-35ºC) e três condições de luz (escuro constante, fotoperíodo de 8 h luz e 16 h escuro e luz constante). Foram utilizadas 200 sementes por tratamento, semeadas sobre papel de filtro dispostos em placas de Petri, e acondicionadas em câmara de germinação por 20 dias, para determinação do percentual, velocidade e tempo médio de germinação. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 4 repetições de 50 sementes, em esquema fatorial 3 x 4 (3 condições de luz e 4 temperaturas). As médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. Houve diferença significativa na interação temperatura x luz, nas três variáveis. Concluiu-se que as sementes de janaguba apresentam fotoblastismo neutro; as temperaturas constantes de 20ºC e 25ºC, combinadas com escuro constante e luz/escuro, e as temperaturas constante de 30ºC e alternada de 20-35ºC, combinadas com luz/escuro, são as condições mais favoráveis à germinação; a combinação das temperaturas constantes de 25ºC e 30ºC e ausência de luz, aumenta a velocidade e reduz o tempo médio de germinação de sementes de janaguba.

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the temperature and light on the germinative behaviour of janaguba (Himatanthus drasticus)seeds, with the experiments being conducted at the Laboratory of Seed Analysis of the Federal University of Ceará. To analyse percentage, velocity and average time of germination, the treatments consisted of four different temperatures (20ºC, 25ºC, 30ºC e 20-35ºC) and three different light expositions (constant dark; 8 h of light plus 16 h of dark; and constant light). The treatments consisted of 200 seeds, with four repetitions of 50 seeds each, sown on a Germitest towel paper, displayed inside Petri dishes, and maintained for 20 days in germination chamber. A completely randomized 3x4 factorial design (three light expositions x four treatments) was used. The Tukey's Test at 5% of probability was used to compare the obtained averages. The janaguba seeds were shown to have neuter photoblastism. The better conditions for janaguma seed germination are temperatures of 20 and 25ºC combined with constant dark and light/dark, constant temperature of 30ºC and alternated temperature from 20 to 35ºC combined with intermittent light/dark. The constant temperatures of 25 and 30ºC plus constant dark led to the greatest indexes of velocity of germination and caused the reduction of the germination average time.

O trabalho objetivou descrever e ilustrar aspectos morfológicos do fruto, semente e plântulas de janaguba (Himatanthus drasticus (Mart.) Plumel.). Nos ensaios realizados em laboratório e casa de vegetação do Departamento de Fitotecnia do Centro de Ciências Agrárias, da Universidade Federal do Ceará, em Fortaleza-CE, foram observados nos frutos os seguintes aspectos: tipo, deiscência, tamanho, coloração e consistência do epicarpo, mesocarpo, endocarpo e placenta. Na semente, verificou-se dimensão, coloração, textura e consistência do tegumento, forma e bordo, posição do hilo, micrópila e rafe, embrião, cotilédones, eixo hipocótilo-radícula e plúmula, enquanto na plântula observou-se protrusão da raiz primária e secundária, hipocótilo, epicótilo e plúmula. As observações foram realizadas com auxílio de lupa de mesa, microscópio estereoscópico e as medidas foram tomadas com paquímetro digital. O fruto é polispérmico, possui em média 42 sementes aladas e albuminosas, com germinação faneroepígea cotiledonar.

The objectives of this study were to describe and illustrate the morphological aspects of janaguba (Himatanthus drasticus (Mart.) Plumel.) fruit, seed and seedlings. All the experiments were conducted at the Laboratory of Seed Analysis of the Federal University of Ceará. The following characteristics were studied in janaguba fruits: type, dehiscence, dimension, consistency and coloration of the epicarp, mesocarp, endocarp and placenta. In janaguba seeds the characteristics studied were dimension, colour, texture, consistency of the tegument, shape, edges, hilum, micropyle and rafe positions, embryo, cotyledons, hypocotyl-radicle axes, and plumule. The janaguba seedling root system, hypocotyls, epicotyls, and first leaves were evaluated. Ruler and pachimeter were used to take the measurements, as well as optical microscope and magnifying glass. The janaguba fruit is full of seeds (42 seeds in average), winged; seeds are the albumin type and present epigeous germination.
