Abstract This study assessed the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on biohydrogen production by dark fermentation using an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor fed with cheese whey synthetic wastewater. The reactor of 1.2 L was operated with an approximate carbohydrate concentration of 2800 mg L-1, and HRTs of 6, 4, 2, 1 and 0.5 h. Acetic and butyric acids were the main metabolites produced in the reactor. The hydrogen production increased from 0.039 to 1.43 L-H2 h-1 L-1-reactor as the HRT decreased from 6 to 0.5 h. The best hydrogen yield (HY) (2.73 mol-H2 mol-carbohydrate-1) and carbohydrate consumption (81.02%) were achieved at a HRT of 6 h (12.34 kg-COD m-3 d-1) followed by the HY of 2.43 mol-H2 mol-carbohydrate-1 at a HRT of 0.5h (163.02 kg-COD m-3.d-1). An increase in the influent pH in the operational phase 05 (HRT of 0.5 h) favored hydrogen production despite the reduced carbohydrate conversion compared to phase 01 (HRT of 6 h). In both conditions, the reactor presented the highest amount of acetic acid, indicating that the acetate route favored the hydrogen yield production. The HRT reduction led to an increase in microbial diversity, as evidenced by the Shannon-Wiener coefficient of 2.586, which corresponds to the operational phase with a HRT of 2 h.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of interaction between salinity and plant spacing on maize (Zea mays L.) hybrid AG 1051. A randomized block in a 3 x 2 factorial was used, with three row spacings (0.5, 0.7 and 0.9 m) and two levels of salinity of irrigation water (0.8 and 5.0 dS m-1), with five replications. The variables analyzed were: photosynthesis (A), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), plant height, shoot dry mass (SDM), leaf area index (LAI), leaf area (LA), content of carbohydrate, soluble N-amines, Na+ and K+. The rates of net photosynthesis did not differ significantly neither as a result of plant spacings nor the salinity of irrigation water. The PAR intercepted by the basal leaves of maize was higher in the spacing of 0.9 m, but no difference between stressed and unstressed plants in relation to the radiation intercepted by leaves and photosynthetic rates was observed. Although salinity affected the levels of carbohydrates and sodium in leaves, the greatest differences were related to plant spacing and leaf age evaluated. In general, the densification of maize cultivation did not minimize the deleterious effects of salinity on plant growth.

A method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of Cd and Pb in antibiotics used in sugar-cane fermentation by GFAAS. The integrated platform of transversely heated graphite atomizer was treated with tungsten to form a coating of tungsten carbide. Six samples of commercial solid antibiotics were analyzed by injecting 20 µL of digested samples into the pretreated graphite platform with co-injection of 5 µL of 1000 mg L-1 Pd as chemical modifier. Samples were mineralized in a closed-vessel microwave-assisted acid-digestion system using nitric acid plus hydrogen peroxide. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures of the heating program of the atomizer were selected as 600°C and 2200°C, respectively. The calculated characteristic mass for Cd and Pb was 1.6 pg and 42 pg, respectively. Limits of detection (LOD) based on integrated absorbance were 0.02 µg L-1 Cd and 0.7 µg L-1 Pb and the relative standard deviations (n = 10) for Cd and Pb were 5.7% and 8.0%, respectively. The recoveries of Cd and Pb added to the digested samples varied from 91% to 125% (Cd) and 80% to 112% (Pb).
