ABSTRACT: Vagal indigestion (VI) is a digestive disorder characterized by the dysfunction of the vagus nerve. This disorder leads to changes in forestomach motility. The causes of VI are varied. Failure to transport digestive contents may occur due to mechanical obstruction or a neurogenic origin. There are few reports in the literature regarding this disease in mini-cattle. These cattle seem to be predisposed to the development of VI. The aim of the present study was to analyze the epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, and electrocardiographic aspects of mini-cattle diagnosed with VI. The medical records of nine mini-cattle diagnosed with VI were retrospectively reviewed. Mini-cattle were referred to the Large Animal Hospital in Botucatu, Brazil, from 2002 to 2021. It was observed that VI affected young mini-cattle. The predominant clinical manifestations were intermittent gas ruminoreticular tympanism with increased volume in the left paralumbar fossa and increased volume in the right ventral region (apple/pear aspect), hypomotility in ruminal auscultation and the presence of pasty stools. The mean heart rate of the animals was 75 beats per minute. In one case, bradycardia was observed by electrocardiogram and Holter monitor system. In this case, the predominance of parasympathetic activity of the autonomic nervous system was observed. The main hematological findings were leukocytosis and lymphocytosis. The therapeutic approach included ruminal fistulation and the implantation of a permanent rumen cannula. All animals undergoing the procedure were discharged with daily care instructions.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the influence of organic matter on the salt accumulation in three layers of soil cultivated with noni plants irrigated with brackish water, in open field and under partial shading conditions. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, arranged in a split-split-plot scheme with five replicates. The plots were constituted by the cultivation environments (open and shaded field), the subplots by the electrical conductivity of the irrigation water (0.3, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 dS m-1), and the sub-subplots by the absence and presence of organic matter. At 110 days after application of the treatments, the electrical conductivity of the saturation extract and the potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations were determined in three soil layers (0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm). Partial shading reduced the total accumulation of salts and sodium in the soil compared to the open field. Increasing the electrical conductivity of irrigation water reduced potassium concentrations in the soil, but this effect is offset by the addition of organic matter, which releases potassium, calcium, and magnesium for plant nutrition. However, cattle manure increases sodium accumulation in the soil in treatments with the highest water salinity.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine crop evapotranspiration through the soil water balance, the crop coefficient and water use efficiency of the onion (Allium cepa L.) in a system with four irrigation regimes, cultivated in the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil. Two field experiments were carried out during the rainy and dry periods of the region in 2018, using the treatments of 100% (T1), 75% (T2), 50% (T3) and 25% (T4) of the reference evapotranspiration for daily water replacement and five replicates for each treatment. It was verified that crop evapotranspiration varies according to the water availability in the soil; however, the highest water use efficiency occurred for the T3 treatment. The T1 treatment obtained the highest estimated yield, 43.86 tons ha-1, while T4 obtained 13.47 tons ha-1, the lowest estimated yield among the treatments, and this difference was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) by F test. The crop coefficients obtained were 0.68, 0.89, 0.99 and 0.73 for the initial, vegetative, bulbing and maturation stages, respectively.

Determining inorganic constituents in illicit drugs can indicate its purity and presence of adulterants. In this study, we analyzed 52 street cocaine samples, seized in three different regions of Espírito Santo, state of Brazil. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry was used to determine Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mg, Zn concentrations and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to determine Mo, Co, Pb and P concentrations. From analyte recovery tests, the accuracy was considered acceptable and the proposed method satisfactory. Most of the samples exhibited a relatively homogeneous inorganic profile with similar concentrations of investigated elements, however some samples had very discrepant concentrations. High concentrations of Al, Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, and P were found, indicating that adulterants such as gypsum, marble powder, limestone, cement, and others must be used to increase the profitability of the illicit drug market.

Abstract This study assessed the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on biohydrogen production by dark fermentation using an anaerobic fluidized bed reactor fed with cheese whey synthetic wastewater. The reactor of 1.2 L was operated with an approximate carbohydrate concentration of 2800 mg L-1, and HRTs of 6, 4, 2, 1 and 0.5 h. Acetic and butyric acids were the main metabolites produced in the reactor. The hydrogen production increased from 0.039 to 1.43 L-H2 h-1 L-1-reactor as the HRT decreased from 6 to 0.5 h. The best hydrogen yield (HY) (2.73 mol-H2 mol-carbohydrate-1) and carbohydrate consumption (81.02%) were achieved at a HRT of 6 h (12.34 kg-COD m-3 d-1) followed by the HY of 2.43 mol-H2 mol-carbohydrate-1 at a HRT of 0.5h (163.02 kg-COD m-3.d-1). An increase in the influent pH in the operational phase 05 (HRT of 0.5 h) favored hydrogen production despite the reduced carbohydrate conversion compared to phase 01 (HRT of 6 h). In both conditions, the reactor presented the highest amount of acetic acid, indicating that the acetate route favored the hydrogen yield production. The HRT reduction led to an increase in microbial diversity, as evidenced by the Shannon-Wiener coefficient of 2.586, which corresponds to the operational phase with a HRT of 2 h.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The Alcântara Formation (S. Luis-Grajaú Basin, Alcântara region, northern Brazil) is mainly constituted by mudstones, sandstones and limestones. These lithotypes represent a progradacional succession of lagun/washover and tidal channel deposits that overlap huge shoreface deposits. The main purpose of this work is to carry out a mineralogical and geochemical characterization of the clay minerals association related to the pelitic rocks of the Alcantara Formation, specially the known palygorskite occurrences. One geological profile was sampled (eight samples) and described at the Baronesa beach (Alcântara city). The samples were submitted to mineralogical and chemical analysis by means of the following techniques: X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the Baronesa Beach profile is mainly composed by sandstones at the base, followed by mudstones with intercalations of limestones. A wide clay mineral assemblage was described in a lagoon environment, with different contents of palygorskite, chlorite, illite, smectite and traces of kaolinite. Small amounts of dolomite, calcite and feldspars were also observed. The genesis of these minerals assemblage are mainly related to arid to semi-arid climatic conditions during the deposition period, with high evaporation rates. Two generations of palygorskite were described: (1) white macroscopic accumulations easily observed in the field and frequently described in the literature; and (2) massive accumulation, as the dominant mineral, in the upper muddy levels of the Baronesa Beach profile. This second generation is described for the first time in this work, and may constitute metric levels with potential economic interest.

The aim of this work is to evaluate, by electrodialysis, the influence of Ca2+ and Mg2+ on the rheology of bentonite clay dispersions from Boa Vista, PB. Dispersions were prepared with 4.86 wt.% and submitted to electrodialysis process by using a cationic polymeric membrane in the batch reactor. The electrodialysis was set up according to 2² + 3 factorial design by using 7, 10 and 13 V and 40, 80 and 120 min. After electrodialysis, the dispersions were treated with Na2CO3 and after curing, the apparent and plastic viscosities were measured using a viscosimeter and water loss with a filter-press. Moreover, exchanged cations were determinated before and after the electrodialysis process. The results show that the electrodialysis can be a valuable tool to identify the factors that dictate the rheological behavior of bentonite clay dispersions, as well as that the partially eliminated Ca2+ and Mg2+ do not influence on the rheology of the dispersions.

The effects of addition of four different polymeric additives in the rheological and water loss properties of clay dispersions as drilling fluids based on water were studied. The results show that these properties are strongly dependent on the polymeric additives as well as on polymer chain length.
