Ecological patterns and conservation opportunities with carbon credits in Brazil nut groves: a study-case in the Southeast Amazon

ABSTRACT Background: Brazil Nuts (BN) tree is a species of high importance in Amazon region. Their continuous use by traditional communities is often related to disturbances that lead to larger degraded areas where this species is commonly found (“BN groves”). Here we aimed to explore the ecological patterns of BN groves vegetation and its relationship with BN trees and evaluate their potential as a source of carbon credits. We sampled 15 circular plots, with Brazilian Nut trees as the center (focal trees) and collected morphometric data from the focal trees. Additionally, we evaluated fruit production for a period of 5 years to obtain annual measurements, which were used as a proxy of the anthropic impact associated with the collection process. Through analysis of the data, we: i) examined the effects of BN trees on the adjacent vegetation; ii) quantified the potential amount of carbon credits in the adjacent vegetation and in the focal trees by converting carbon stock to equivalent CO2. Results: The adjacent vegetation structure was influenced by the size of BN trees (focal trees). No important effects of BN trees on the adjacent vegetation floristic composition and functional attributes were found. Additionally, we found that Brazilian Nut groves possess a significant potential for carbon credits that could be leveraged in the future carbon credit market, Conclusion: The study highlights the potential for carbon credit generation in Brazil nut groves in the Southeast Amazon as a means of supporting conservation and restoration efforts in these environments.

BACKGROUND Different strategies for improvement of malaria control and elimination are based on the blockage of malaria parasite transmission to the mosquito vector. These strategies include the drugs that target the plasmodial sexual stages in humans and the early developmental stages inside mosquitoes. OBJECTIVES Here we tested Malaria Box compounds in order to evaluate their activity against male and female gametocytes in Plasmodium berghei, mosquito infection in P. vivax and ookinete formation in both species. METHODS/FINDINGS The membrane feeding assay and the development of ookinetes by a 24 h ex vivo culture and the ookinete yield per 1000 erythrocytes were used to test transmission-blocking potential of the Malaria Box compounds in P. vivax. For P. berghei we used flow cytometry to evaluate male and female gametocyte time course and fluorescence microscopy to check the ookinete development. The two species used in this study showed similar results concerning the compounds’ activity against gametocytes and ookinetes, which were different from those in P. falciparum. In addition, from the eight Malaria Box compounds tested in both species, compounds MMV665830, MMV665878 and MMV665941 were selected as a hit compounds due the high inhibition observed. CONCLUSION Our results showed that P. berghei is suitable as an initial screening system to test compounds against P. vivax.

Over the years, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been reported in the literature as an alternative to traditional methods of analysis, becoming well established among spectroanalytical techniques. LIBS is a technique widely used for qualitative approaches; however, it is necessary considerable effort for use in quantitative analysis, mainly due to severe matrix effects. These limitations make it difficult to broaden the application of LIBS in quantitative analysis. In this sense, this review discusses recent advances in calibration strategies applied in LIBS for minimizing matrix effects and enabling determination with satisfactory accuracy and precision. Applications, advantages, and limitations of the calibration strategies, such as matrix-matching calibration (MMC), internal standardization (IS), standard addition (SA), multi-energy calibration (MEC), one-point gravimetric standard addition (OP GSA), one-point and multi-line calibration (OP MLC), slope ratio calibration (SRC), two-point calibration transfer (TP CT), single-sample calibration (SSC), multiple linear regression (MLR), principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares (PLS) and artificial neural networks (ANN) are discussed.

This review attempts to present a broad view of the technique laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), since its origin, fundamentals, sample preparation strategies, use of chemometric tools for data processing, the advantages and limitations with regard to qualitative and quantitative analysis, aplications and future trends as an analytical technique that is in consolidation in analytical chemistry. LIBS is a rapid and versatile, which is able of providing qualitative and quantitative analytical information for practically any sample, in a virtually non-destructive way, without any substantial sample preparation. The instrumentation is simple, robust, compact, and enables remote analysis. The advancement of the LIBS applications in the areas of agriculture, environmental, food, biological/pharmaceutical, forensic, metallurgy and electronic waste were discussed in detail in this review. We consider that this review will be an important tool concerning dissemination of the LIBS, mainly for audience of undergraduate courses, and disciplines related to instrumental analysis.

Biomonitoring of Toxic Elements in Plants Collected Near Leather Tanning Industry

The present work aimed the study of atmospheric deposition of toxic elements near to a tannery industry by collecting black material deposited on leaf surfaces of cinnamon trees (Cinnamomum zeylanicum). Elements such as As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For comparison purpose, black particles deposited on the leaf surface of lemon trees (Citrus lemon) collected away from the tannery industry were also analyzed. Results showed that the amount of toxic elements found in the black particles collected near tannery area was significantly higher than the amount of those measured in the comparison site. Enrichment factors (EF) of As and Cr were markedly impacted by anthropogenic emissions, whereas the other elements were moderately/slightly enriched. Cluster analysis (CA) identified the leather industry as the anthropogenic source, while As possibly comes from the wide use of pesticides and herbicides in agricultural practices. The results indicated that emissions from the leather industry and agricultural activities are the main source of pollution in this area.

Can the leaf age influence the susceptibility to bacterial-leaf-spot and bacterial-halo-blight on coffee seedlings?

RESUMO: Bactérias da espécie Pseudomonas syringae van Hall, 1902, causam perdas na produção em inúmeras culturas de importância econômica. Em cafeeiros, P. syringae pv. garcae provoca a mancha-aureolada e P. syringae pv. tabaci ocasiona a mancha-foliar-bacteriana, doenças cuja ocorrência e agressividade têm aumentado nos últimos anos no Brasil. Embora a idade das folhas influencie na expressão da severidade de mancha-aureolada, não se sabe ainda se essa influência se mantém em plantas infectadas por estirpes altamente virulentas da bactéria. Desse modo, o presente estudo foi realizado com a finalidade de examinar diferenças na severidade de mancha-aureolada em folhas de cafeeiro com diferentes idades, bem como estudar comparativamente tais aspectos na interação entre cafeeiro e mancha-foliar-bacteriana, empregando-se isolados altamente virulentos. Os resultados evidenciaram que, assim como a mancha-aureolada, a severidade da mancha-bacteriana também é maior em folhas jovens do primeiro internódio, entretanto, as estirpes mais agressivas de P. syringae pv. garcae e P. syringae pv. tabaci provocaram danos de magnitude semelhantes em folhas de diferentes idades, do primeiro ao quinto internódio.
ABSTRACT: Pseudomonas syringae van Hall, 1902, causes yield losses in innumerous economic important crops. On coffee trees, P. syringae pv. garcae causes the bacterial-halo-blight (BHB) and P. syringae pv. tabaci the bacterial-leaf-spot (BLS). Recently, these diseases incidence has increase in occurrence areas and aggressiveness in Brazil. Although leaf age plays a role in the severity response of BHB, it is not known yet if this phenomenon also occurs in coffee-BLS interaction, and with highly virulent strains. So, we examined differences in the diseases severity by inoculation of P. syringae pv. garcae and P. syringae pv. tabaci strains on coffee leaves with different ages, to compare this aspect with coffee-BLS interaction. Our results showed that, for both pathovars, the severity was greater at the first internodes leaves, although for the most aggressive strains it was quite similar on any leaf age.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Este trabalho relata a experiência de integração ensino-serviço-comunidade vivenciada por membros de equipes de Saúde da Família e graduandos de Medicina e Enfermagem participantes do PET-Saúde da Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz. A referida integração contextualizou-se com o desenvolvimento do projeto "Unidos contra a dengue", mobilização conjunta da instituição de ensino com o serviço de saúde e a comunidade no combate à dengue no bairro Nossa Senhora da Vitória, Ilhéus-Bahia. O foco das ações desse projeto foram as atividades de educação em saúde, nas quais se empregou preferencialmente metodologias ativas de ensino e aprendizagem. A mobilização contou com a participação expressiva da população das mais diversas faixas etárias. O sucesso do projeto ressalta a importância da implantação de programas como o PET-Saúde, que fortalecem a interação entre ensino-serviço-comunidade - importante para construção de serviços de saúde mais qualificados, capazes de inter-relacionar promoção, prevenção e assistência à saúde, possibilitando ações nessa área mais próximas das reais necessidades do SUS. Com esta experiência, espera-se ter contribuído para a formação de graduandos em saúde e qualificação em serviço de profissionais dessa área mais dispostos a trabalhar de forma integrada e integradora com a comunidade.
This study reports on a practical experience with the integration between learning, services, and the community including members of family health teams and undergraduate medical and nursing students participating in the Educational Program for Health Work (PET-Saúde) at Santa Cruz State University. The integration took place within the context of the project "United Against Dengue", an integrated mobilization of the teaching institution, health services, and community in the fight against dengue fever in the district of Nossa Senhora da Vitória, Ilhéus, Bahia State. The projects focused on health education activities, especially with active teaching and learning methods. The mobilization included a significant range of age groups. The project's success emphasizes the importance of implementing programs such as PET-Saúde that strengthen the interaction between learning, services, and the community, important for developing more qualified health services with the capacity to interrelate health promotion, prevention, and healthcare, fostering health activities more in line with the needs of the Unified National Health System (SUS). This experience aims to contribute to the qualification and training of health professionals and students that are willing to work in an integrated and integrating approach with the community.

FUNDAMENTO: Insuficiência cardíaca (IC) causada por Doença de Chagas (DC) é uma cardiomiopatia inflamatória progressiva que afeta milhões de pessoas na América Latina. Estudos com modelos de camundongo de IC devido à DC indicam que o transplante de células mononucleares derivadas da medula óssea (TCDMO) pode reduzir a inflamação, fibrose e melhorar a função miocárdica. OBJETIVO: O propósito desse estudo foi avaliar, pela primeira vez em seres humanos, a segurança e a eficácia de TCDMO no miocárdio de pacientes com IC devido à DC. MÉTODOS: Um total de 28 pacientes com IC devido à DC (média de idade de 52,2 ± 9,9 anos) com classe funcional NYHA III e IV foram submetidos à TCDMO através de injeção coronariana. Os efeitos na fração de ejeção do ventrículo esquerdo (FEVE), capacidade funcional, qualidade de vida, arritmias e parâmetros bioquímicos, imunológicos e neuro-humorais foram avaliados. RESULTADOS: Não houve complicações diretamente relacionadas ao procedimento. A FEVE foi 20,1 ± 6,8% e 28,3 ± 7,9%, p < 0,03 a nível basal e 180 dias após o procedimento, respectivamente. No mesmo período, melhoras significantes foram observadas na classe funcional NYHA (3,1 ± 0,3 para 1,8 ± 0,5; p < 0,001), qualidade de vida (50,9 ± 11,7 para 25,1 ± 15,9; p < 0,001), e no teste de caminhada de seis minutos (355 ± 136 m para 437 ± 94 m; p < 0,01). Não houve alterações nos marcadores de ativação imune ou neurohormonais. Nenhuma complicação foi registrada. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos dados sugerem que a injeção intracoronariana de células derivadas da medula óssea é segura e potencialmente efetiva em pacientes com IC devido à DC. A extensão do benefício, entretanto, parece ser discreta e precisa ser confirmada em estudos clínicos maiores, randomizados, duplo-cegos, controlados com placebo.
BACKGROUND: Heart failure due to Chagas' disease (HFCD) is a progressive inflammatory cardiomyopathy that affects millions of individuals in Latin America. Studies using mice models of HFCD indicate that bone marrow mononuclear cell transplantation (BMCT) may reduce inflammation, fibrosis, and improve myocardial function. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate, for the first time in humans, the safety and efficacy of BMCT to the myocardium of patients with HFCD. METHODS: A total of 28 HFCD patients (mean age 52.2 ± 9.9 years) with NYHA class III and IV were submitted to BMCT through intracoronary injection. Effects on the left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF), functional capacity, quality-of-life, arrhythmias, biochemical, immunological, and neuro-humoral parameters, were evaluated. RESULTS: There were no complications directly related to the procedure. LVEF was 20.1 ± 6.8% and 28.3 ± 7.9%, p < 0.03 at baseline and 180 days after the procedure, respectively. In the same period, significant improvements were observed in the NYHA class (3.1 ± 0.3 to 1.8 ± 0.5; p < 0.001), quality-of-life (50.9 ± 11.7 to 25.1 ± 15.9; p < 0.001), and in the six-minute walking test (355 ± 136 m to 437 ± 94 m; p < 0,01). There were no changes in markers of immune or neurohormonal activation. No complications were registered. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that the intracoronary injection of BMCT is safe and potentially effective in patients with HFCD. The extent of the benefit, however, appears to be small and needs to be confirmed in a larger randomized, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial.
FUNDAMENTO: La insuficiencia cardíaca (IC), causada por la enfermedad de Chagas (EC), es una cardiomiopatía inflamatoria progresiva que afecta a millones de personas en Latinoamérica. Estudios con modelos experimentales de IC en razón de la EC, nos indican que el transplante de células mononucleares derivadas de la médula ósea (TCMO), puede reducir la inflamación y la fibrosis, mejorando así la función miocárdica. OBJETIVO:El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar, por primera vez en seres humanos, la seguridad y la eficacia del TCMO en el miocardio de pacientes con IC debido a la EC. MÉTODOS:Fueron estudiados un total de 28 pacientes con IC debido a la EC (con edad promedio 52,2 ± 9,9 años), en clases funcionales III y IV (NYHA), al TCMO por medio de una inyección coronaria. Se evaluaron los efectos en la fracción de eyección del ventrículo izquierdo (FEVI), capacidad funcional, calidad de vida, arritmias y parámetros bioquímicos, inmunológicos y neurohumorales. RESULTADOS:No se registraron complicaciones relacionadas directamente con el procedimiento. La FEVI pasó de 20,1 ± 6,8% para 28,3 ± 7,9%, p < 0,03, cuando se comparó con el período basal y 180 días después del procedimiento, respectivamente. En el mismo período, también se observaron mejorías en la clase funcional NYHA promedio (3,1 ± 0,3 para 1,8 ± 0,5; p < 0,001), puntuación de calidad de vida de Minnesota (50,9 ± 11,7 para 25,1 ± 15,9; p < 0,001), y en el test de esfuerzo de seis minutos (355 ± 136 m para 437 ± 94 m; p < 0,01). No hubo alteraciones en los marcadores de activación inflamatoria o neurohormonales. Ninguna complicación fue registrada. CONCLUSIÓN:Nuestros datos sugieren que la inyección intracoronaria de las células derivadas de la médula ósea es segura y potencialmente efectiva en pacientes con IC debido a la EC. La extensión del beneficio, sin embargo, parece ser discreta, y necesita ser confirmada en los ensayos clínicos randomizados, doble ciegos, controlados con placebo.

Apresentamos uma modificação técnica para ampliação anular mitro-aórtica. A prótese mitral é implantada pela via retrosseptal, evitando retalhos para fechar o teto atrial esquerdo. Relatamos um implante valvar mitro-aórtico em paciente cujos anéis originais impossibilitariam próteses adequadas. A ampliação pode ser necessária para evitar a inadequação prótese-paciente ou para reconstruir anéis mitral e aórtico destruídos. Esta técnica pode diminuir o risco de sangramento e de vazamento paravalvar, utilizando um acesso bem conhecido por cirurgiões cardíacos.
We hereby present a technical modification for mitral-aortic annular enlargement. The mitral valve is replaced through the retro-septal approach, avoiding patches for left atrial roof closure. We report a mitral-aortic valve replacement in a patient whose original annuli would preclude adequate prostheses. The simultaneous annular enlargement may be necessary for avoiding patient-prosthesis mismatch and for reconstructing destroyed mitral and aortic annuli. The technique may minimize the risk of bleeding and of paravalvular leakage, using an approach well known to cardiac surgeons.
