Abstract Background The most frequent cause of death in neurosurgical patients is due to the increase in intracranial pressure (ICP); consequently, adequate monitoring of this parameter is extremely important. Objectives In this study, we aimed to analyze the accuracy of noninvasive measurement methods for intracranial hypertension (IH) in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods The data were obtained from the PubMed database, using the following terms: intracranial pressure, noninvasive, monitoring, assessment, and measurement. The selected articles date from 1980 to 2021, all of which were observational studies or clinical trials, in English and specifying ICP measurement in TBI. At the end of the selection, 21 articles were included in this review. Results The optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), pupillometry, transcranial doppler (TCD), multimodal combination, brain compliance using ICP waveform (ICPW), HeadSense, and Visual flash evoked pressure (FVEP) were analyzed. Pupillometry was not found to correlate with ICP, while HeadSense monitor and the FVEP method appear to have good correlation, but sensitivity and specificity data are not available. The ONSD and TCD methods showed good-to-moderate accuracy on invasive ICP values and potential to detect IH in most studies. Furthermore, multimodal combination may reduce the error possibility related to each technique. Finally, ICPW showed good accuracy to ICP values, but this analysis included TBI and non-TBI patients in the same sample. Conclusions Noninvasive ICP monitoring methods may be used in the near future to guide TBI patients’ management.

Abstract Introduction: Adequate and continuous airway management by health professionals is fundamental to ensure patient safety and protection. Among several techniques, laryngoscopy for orotracheal intubation is considered a basic skill, so it is taught and learned in medical school and used during the future years of professional practice. However, in some clinical scenarios, physical and anatomical characteristics can make laryngoscopy exceedingly difficult. In the last decade, some new devices have emerged to apply indirect or video-assisted imaging systems, so-called videolaryngoscopes. They have shown great efficiency in difficult intubation cases and have improved teaching and training. Our study introduced a videolaryngoscope, the McGrathTM MAC, in the regular laryngoscopy training rotation for 3rd-year undergraduate medical students and evaluated whether there was any associated optimization of the students’ performance. Method: Students from two different classes and years (2017 and 2018) were randomly divided into two groups and received theoretical and practical training in the techniques of Direct Laryngoscopy (DL) and Videolaryngoscopy (VL). The students in each group applied the manoeuvres and simulated three tracheal intubation attempts on mannequins. They were evaluated for their success rate on the first attempt, the time required to finalize the intubation, and the visualization of the glottic structures according to the classification of Cormack-Lehane (C&L). Results: Two hundred and four students with an average age of 21 ± 2 years participated in the study; the groups were similar. There was a significant difference between the VL and DL groups in the 1st attempt success rate (97% and 89.4%, respectively, p = 0.0497 - 95% CI), but such a difference was not seen for the other attempts or regarding the number of oesophageal intubations (3% and 7.7%). The students in the VL group were faster than those in the DL group in all intubation attempts; in parallel, the vast majority of the VL group reported excellent visualization conditions, with 75% of the attempts classified as Cormack-Lehane grade 1. Conclusion: The introduction of a videolaryngoscope in medical students’ training improved the visualization of anatomical structures and allowed tracheal intubation maneuvers to be performed faster and with a higher success rate on the first attempt. Thus, under the conditions of this prospective study, the videolaryngoscope had a positive impact on training and proved to be a promising tool for teaching laryngoscopy.

OBJECTIVES: This observational, cross-sectional study based aimed to test whether heart failure (HF)-disease management program (DMP) components are influencing care and clinical decision-making in Brazil. METHODS: The survey respondents were cardiologists recommended by experts in the field and invited to participate in the survey via printed form or email. The survey consisted of 29 questions addressing site demographics, public versus private infrastructure, HF baseline data of patients, clinical management of HF, performance indicators, and perceptions about HF treatment. RESULTS: Data were obtained from 98 centers (58% public and 42% private practice) distributed across Brazil. Public HF-DMPs compared to private HF-DMP were associated with a higher percentage of HF-DMP-dedicated services (79% vs 24%; OR: 12, 95% CI: 94-34), multidisciplinary HF (MHF)-DMP [84% vs 65%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-8), HF educational programs (49% vs 18%; OR: 4; 95% CI: 1-2), written instructions before hospital discharge (83% vs 76%; OR: 1; 95% CI: 0-5), rehabilitation (69% vs 39%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-9), monitoring (44% vs 29%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 1-5), guideline-directed medical therapy-HF use (94% vs 85%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 0-15), and less B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) dosage (73% vs 88%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-9), and key performance indicators (37% vs 60%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 1-7). In comparison to non- MHF-DMP, MHF-DMP was associated with more educational initiatives (42% vs 6%; OR: 12; 95% CI: 1-97), written instructions (83% vs 68%; OR: 2: 95% CI: 1-7), rehabilitation (69% vs 17%; OR: 11; 95% CI: 3-44), monitoring (47% vs 6%; OR: 14; 95% CI: 2-115), GDMT-HF (92% vs 83%; OR: 3; 95% CI: 0-15). In addition, there were less use of BNP as a biomarker (70% vs 84%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 1-8) and key performance indicators (35% vs 51%; OR: 2; 95% CI: 91,6) in the non-MHF group. Physicians considered changing or introducing new medications mostly when patients were hospitalized or when observing worsening disease and/or symptoms. Adherence to drug treatment and non-drug treatment factors were the greatest medical problems associated with HF treatment. CONCLUSION: HF-DMPs are highly heterogeneous. New strategies for HF care should consider the present study highlights and clinical decision-making processes to improve HF patient care.

ABSTRACT Prioritizing surgical procedures aims at facilitating patient’s access according to the clinical needs, maximizing access equity, and minimizing the damage from delayed access. Previous categorization of elective bariatric surgery have been adapted to define an objective prioritizing system that reflects those principles for bariatric and metabolic operations. Given the factors that contribute to the morbidity and mortality of obese and type 2 diabetes patients, surgical prioritization should be based on clinical risk stratification. For patients with type 2 diabetes, we suggest that the operation may be prioritized for those with a higher risk of morbidity and mortality in a relatively short term. Likewise, it is necessary to guide the surgical team regarding the necessary care both in the pre, per and postoperative periods of bariatric and metabolic surgery. These recommendations aim to reduce the risk of in-hospital contamination of the surgical team among health professionals and between health professionals and patients. In summary, these recommendations have been shaped after a thorough analysis of the available literature and are extremely important to mitigate the harm related to the clinical complications of obesity and its comorbidities while keeping healthcare providers’ and patients’ safety.

Abstract Process analyses foster opportunities for identifying losses during the production process and consequently, provide courses of action to enhance the process with operational parameters that are compatible with the targeted results. In this study, a thermochemical model was developed in order to monitor the performance of coke-based blast furnaces, focusing on tools for calculating and graphically displaying parameters that facilitate interpretation of the internal phenomena. To apply the model, a database was prepared based on operational simulations of blast furnaces. The input parameters for the model consisted of the properties and consumption of raw materials and the mass and thermal balances of the process. The thermochemical model is based on the calculation of the degree of reduction of the metallic burden in the preparation zone, defined as the omega factor. It was found that the omega factor varies significantly with the CO/CO2ratio and %H2of the top gas. The results obtained by applying this model were coherent, thus validating it as a predictive tool for assessing the sensitivity of the omega factor, which has a major effect on carbon consumption.

Abstract The main aim of this study was to verify possible differences between a friendly pre-season match (FM) and an official in-season match (OM) regarding physical, technical, and organizational performances of a professional Brazilian futsal team. Ten professional futsal athletes participated in this study. The matches were monitored with video cameras (30 Hz) and athlete trajectories obtained with automatic tracking. The values obtained for distance covered per minute, percentage of distance covered at moderate intensity, team coverage area, spread, passes, possessions, ball touches and successful passes per minute were greater for the OM than FM. On the contrary, percentage of distance covered, standing and walking was greater for the FM than OM. We concluded that physical, technical, and tactical performances are different between a FM and an OM in futsal and also these parameters mutually influenced each other distinctly. Future studies should verify whether pre-season tournaments reproduce similar demands to a regular season official match.

Introduction: The high rate of injuries of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) without involving contact in women is a source of curiosity among scientists, because drop landing assessments may suggest a predisposition to the risk of this injury. In these sense, several training protocols have been used as an intervention and achieved mixed results in the change of this risk factor. Objective: The aim of this project was to evaluate the possible changes of rotation knee in single-leg drop landing after the intervention of a neuromuscular training program. Methods: The study included 18 women aged between 18 and 51 years, who were divided into two groups: neuromuscular training group (NTG) (n=11) and control group (CG) (n=7). In addition, they did not have musculoskeletal injury or pain in the lower limbs. Each participant completed five valid single-leg drop landings from a platform of 40 cm. The motion capture process was carried out with 12 infrared cameras of the OptiTrack(tm) system to obtain three-dimensional coordinates of markers fixed in the anatomical points of interest. The local coordinate systems of the thigh and leg were defined by means of the respective markers set in the anatomical points. Thus, the knee rotation angles in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes were calculated through the sequence of Euler angles and the angular velocities were calculated using the formulations of quaternions. Results: The results showed an increase in the knee rotation speed after the neuromuscular training. Conclusion: We conclude that neuromuscular training resulted in faster rotation at the knee in the 40 milliseconds succeeding the single-leg landing.

AbstractThe aim of this study was to compare and verify the possible correlations between ball velocity with foot velocity, knee angle and length of last stride between practitioners and non-practitioners of futsal game. Fourteen young males with aged between 13 and 15 years old divided into two groups: practitioners (G1) and non-practitioners (G2), according with the time of futsal structured practice. For the kinematic analysis we had used two cameras at a sampling frequency of 120 Hz, fixed laterally to the movement performed in order to focus the markers in the limb of kick. Each participant has performed ten kicks simulating a kick of ten meters in futsal. Three-dimensional data of the lower limb of kick were obtained in DVIDEOW software and treated in Matlab environment in order to obtain the variables of interest: ball velocity (VELBALL), foot velocity (VELFOOT), knee angle (ANGKNEE) and length of last stride (LLS). Statistically all data displayed higher levels in G1 compared to G2. In addition, no significant differences were found between trials in each group (p < 0.05). In G1 a multiple regression analysis revealed only influence on VELBALL 17% caused by LLS. Moreover, in G2 any variable have influenced VELBALL. However, we conclude that the variables are different between practitioners and non-practitioners of futsal game with aged between 13 and 15 years old, and the variable VELBALL could be little influenced by the LLS in this age band. Thus, we suggested that coaches maintain focus on development and monitoring this characteristic of movement, especially in novices, in order to identify players with different levels of performance of kicking in a futsal context.

<title>ABSTRACT</title><p>The drying process is used to remove some water from the product, in order to increase the shelf life, to minimize post-harvest losses in excess of production and owing to the shrinkage, reducing the cost of packaging, transport and storage. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the drying of fig, analysis of shrinkage, as well as obtaining the values of liquid diffusion during the fig drying process. Figs were used from some Niterói Markets and subjected to drying under controlled air temperatures (40, 55 and 70 °C). Mathematical models were adjusted to experimental data to represent the processes of shrinkage and drying of agricultural products. The polynomial model and Midilli had the best fit for the observed data for the temperature range studied, representing the best shrinkage and drying fig, respectively. The liquid diffusion increases with increasing temperature with values between 1.76 x 10-11 and 8.78 x 10-11 m2 s-1.</p>

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence of consolidation in surgical treatment of fractures of the lateral extremity of the clavicle using the double subcoracoid ligature technique, with nonabsorbable No. 5 thread.METHODS: Between May 1993 and June 2013, the Shoulder and Elbow Group of our service surgically treated 116 patients (116 shoulders) with fractures of the lateral extremity of the clavicle. Among these, we were able to reassess 65 cases. The surgical technique used consisted of double subcoracoid ligature with two nonabsorbable threads. In two patients classified as type III, we had to combine this technique with use of an interfragmentary screw for fixation of the intra-articular portion of the acromioclavicular joint.RESULTS: We achieved fracture consolidation in 90%. Fourteen cases (21%) evolved with major complications: four cases of pseudarthrosis, five of adhesive capsulitis, two of delayed consolidation and three of loss of reduction. Two cases (3%) evolved with minor complications of skin granuloma.CONCLUSION: The double ligature technique for fractures of the lateral extremity of the clavicle promotes the stabilization needed for consolidation to take place, without the need for synthesis using metal components. It avoids reoperation for the synthesis material to be removed. Moreover, it is a low-cost procedure with good reproducibility and preservation of the acromioclavicular joint.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
