ResumenEl desarrollo temprano de las larvas de peces es un proceso altamente dinámico y estudiarlo proporciona información importante sobre su desarrollo ontogénico, su crecimiento bioenergético, su comportamiento, las características taxonómicas para la identificación en entornos naturales, la identificación de las zonas de desove y la vigilancia de la población. Los primeros años de vida de Prochilodus argenteus y Prochilodus costatus fueron estudiados desde la eclosión hasta la completa absorción de la yema, con el fin de proporcionar conocimiento sobre los caracteres taxonómicos y el crecimiento y comportamiento, lo cual puede ser aplicado al desarrollo de la cría de larvas. Las larvas fueron obtenidas junto a la Estación de Hidrobiología y Acuicultura de Três Marias, Minas Gerais, donde fueron reproducidas artificialmente. Inmediatamente después de la eclosión, aproximadamente 100 larvas de cada especie fueron acondicionadas en dos incubadoras de plástico. El comportamiento de las larvas fue registrado diariamente y fueron recolectadas 14 larvas de cada especie para análisis morfológico del cuerpo. En el primer día después de la eclosión las larvas de P. costatus y P. argenteus presentaban cuerpos alargados y transparentes. El saco vitelino se llenó de glóbulos de vitelo individualizados. En las dos especies, la aleta embrionaria circundaba la región caudal del cuerpo, la retina no presentaba pigmentos y el intestino estaba obliterado. En el segundo día, en las larvas de ambas especies habían surgido cromatóforos dendríticos, la boca estaba obliterada y fue registrada una aleta pectoral. Las larvas presentaban 38-43 miómeros en P. costatus y 42-43 en P. argenteus. En las dos ecpecies la vejiga de gas estaba inflada y el lumen del intestino ya estaba abierto. En el tercer día, la boca tanto del P. costatus como del P. argenteus ya estaba abierta en una posición subterminal. La retina estaba pigmentada, los arcos branquiales tenían protuberancias laminares y estaban parcialmente cubiertos por el opérculo. En el cuarto día, el patrón de pigmentación se presentó con mayor intensidad; la boca ocupó una posición terminal, el saco vitelino fue casi completamente reabsorbido y las aletas pectorales y caudales presentaban rayos mesenquimales en ambas especies. El intestino mostró un amplio lumen, con la mucosa plegada y el epitelio con borde estriado. Las larvas de ambas especies mostraron un comportamiento similar de natación durante el periodo de prueba. Nuestro estudio provee conocimiento sobre aspectos morfofisiológicos, identificación de especies, desarrollo y crecimiento larval y características ontogénicas de dos peces subtropicales de importancia para la pesca comercial y deportiva.

AbstractEarly development of fish larvae is a highly dynamic process and its study may provide important information about ontogenetic development, bioenergetic growth, behaviour, taxonomic characteristics for identification in natural environments, identification of spawning areas, and population monitoring. With the aim to provide knowledge about their growth and behaviour, to support larval rearing, and also taxonomic purposes, we studied the life history of the Prochilodus argenteus and P. costatus from hatching until the complete absorption of the yolk. Larvae were obtained through artificial reproduction at the Hydrobiology and Aquaculture Station of Três Marias, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Immediately after hatching, 100 larvae of each species were put in two plastic incubators for conditioning. On a daily basis, larvae behavior was recorded and 14 larvae of each species were collected to analyse body morphology. On the first day after hatching, larvae of P. costatus and P. argenteus showed an elongated and transparent body; the yolk sac was filled with individualized yolk globules. In both species, the embryonic fin rounded the caudal region of the body, the retina was non-pigmented and the gut was obliterated. At the second day post-hatching, larvae of both species dendritic chromatophores had emerged, the mouth was obliterated and the pectoral fin was observed. The larvae showed 38-43 myomeres in P. costatus and 42-43 in P. argenteus. For both species, the gas bladder was inflated and the lumen of the gut was already open. On the third day post-hatching, the mouth of P. costatus and P. argenteus was already open in a sub-terminal position; the retina was pigmented; the gill arches had lamellar protrusions and were partially covered by the operculum. On the fourth day post-hatching, the pigmentation pattern was maintained with greater intensity; the mouth occupied a terminal position, the yolk sac was almost completely reabsorbed, and the pectoral and caudal fins showed mesenchymal rays in both species. The gut showed a broad lumen with folded mucosa and epithelium with striated border. The larvae of both species showed similar swimming behaviour. Our study provided understanding about the morphophysiological aspects, species identification, larval development and growth, and the ontogenic characteristics of two Neotropical fishes with importance for commercial and sports fishing. O aumento da entrada de metais pesados nos ambientes aquáticos pode resultar em altos níveis de acumulação destes contaminantes nos peixes e seus consumidores, representando um risco para os ecossistemas e para a saúde humana. Investigamos as concentrações de mercúrio (Hg), cádmio (Cd), zinco (Zn), cromo (Cr) e chumbo (Pb) nos tecidos do músculo, fígado e baço de Pseudoplatystoma corruscans, coletado em dois trechos do rio Paraopeba, Brasil. Nossos resultados mostraram que as concentrações dos metais pesados foram mais elevadas nas vísceras, isto é fígado e baço, indicando que as vísceras deP. corruscans não devem ser utilizadas para consumo humano. As correlações entre as concentrações de metais pesados e o tamanho dos peixes não foram estatisticamente significativas. Embora os níveis de Hg, Cd, Zn, Cr e Pb no músculo geralmente não tenham ultrapassado os limites seguros para o consumo humano, a presença constante desses metais em concentrações próximas a estes limites é motivo de alerta para as populações que consomem regularmente peixes de rios poluídos como o rio Paraopeba. Nossos resultados também indicaram que em uma rede fluvial, onde existam áreas poluídas conectadas a ambientes de boa qualidade, o consumo regular de peixes, mesmo quando estes são capturados em trechos onde os níveis de contaminação forem considerados baixos, pode oferecer risco à saúde, uma vez que muitos peixes de água doce com alto valor comercial como P. corruscans são migradores.

The increasing amounts of heavy metals entering aquatic environments can result in high accumulation levels of these contaminants in fish and their consumers, which pose a serious risk to ecosystems and human health. We investigated the concentrations of mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in muscle, liver, and spleen tissues of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans specimens collected from two sites on the Paraopeba River, Brazil. The level of heavy metals concentrations in the tissues was often higher in viscera (i.e. liver and spleen) than in muscle, and thus, the viscera should not be considered for human consumption. Correlations between metal concentrations and fish size were not significant. Although the levels of muscle bioaccumulation of Hg, Cd, Zn, Cr, and Pb, generally do not exceed the safe levels for human consumption, the constant presence of heavy metals in concentrations near those limits considered safe for human consumption, is a reason for concern, and populations who constantly consume fish from polluted rivers should be warned. Our findings also indicate that in a river network where certain areas are connected to other areas with high rates of environmental pollutants, people should be cautious about the regular consumption of fish, even when the fish consumed are caught in stretches of the basin where contamination levels are considered low, since many of the freshwater fish with high commercial value, such as the catfish surubim, are migratory.

ABSTRACT The digestive tract of Trachelyopterus striatulus (Steindachner, 1877) was studied using morphological, histological, and histochemical techniques. The barbels, lips and tongue had stratified squamous epithelium with mucous, claviform cells, and taste buds. Trachelyopterus striatulus had a dental plaque with villiform teeth. The bucopharyngeal cavity was formed by the gill apparatus and pharyngeal teeth with vilifform denticles. The oesophagus presented stratified squamous epithelium with mucous cells and taste buds. The stomach included cardiac, fundic, and pyloric regions and a simple prismatic epithelium with prismatic cells that reacted positively to periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and amylase+PAS. Only the cardiac and pyloric regions responded positively to alcian blue pH 2.5 (Ab pH 2.5) and alcian blue pH 0.5 (Ab pH 0.5). The cardiac and fundic regions exhibited tubular gastric glands. The intestine was 118.90 ± 22.49 mm long with an intestinal coefficient (CO) of 0.83 ± 0.13. The epithelium was simple prismatic with a brush border and goblet cells, and a greater number of goblet cells were found in the caudal region of the intestine. The mucous cells and goblet cells reacted positively to PAS, amylase+PAS, Ab pH 2.5, and Ab pH 0.5. We analysed if the function of the mucosubstances and morphological characteristics of the digestive tract of T. striatulus are compatible with omnivorous feeding habit.

O trato digestório de 44 exemplares de Schizodon knerii foi estudado utilizando técnicas anatômicas, histológicas e histoquímicas. Boca tem posição terminal, epitélio labial é estratificado pavimentoso com células mucosas, claviformes e botões gustativos, dentes são incisiviformes, língua tem epitélio pavimentoso estratificado com células mucosas e botões gustativos. Cavidade bucofaringe é constituída pelos aparelhos branquial e dentário faringeano. Esôfago mostrou mucosa pregueada, epitélio pavimentoso estratificado, com células mucosas, glândulas esofágicas e botões gustativos. Estômago apresentou as regiões cárdica, fúndica e pilórica, epitélio simples prismático, com glândulas tubulosas e nenhuma na pilórica. Intestino contém de 11 a 15 cecos pilóricos, epitélio é simples prismático com borda em escova, células caliciformes e linfócitos. Células mucosas, glândulas esofágicas e células caliciformes reagiram positivamente ao PAS, amilase + PAS, Ab pH 2.5 e Ab pH 0.5. Células prismáticas gástrica foram positivas ao PAS, amilase + PAS e apenas as da região pilórica regiram positivamente ao Ab pH 2.5 e Ab pH 0.5. Os resultados fornecem informações acerca do entendimento das estruturas anatômicas e celulares envolvidas na alimentação de S. knerii e a presença de mucossubstâncias no epitélio evidencia a importância dessas glicoproteínas durante a passagem do alimento no trato digestório.

The digestive tracts of 44 specimens of Schizodon knerii were studied using anatomical, histological and histochemical techniques. The mouth has terminal position, the lip epithelium is squamous stratified with mucous, claviform cells and taste buds, teeth have an incisive form and the tongue has a stratified squamous epithelium with mucous cells and taste buds. The oropharynx cavity is formed by gill apparatus and pharyngeal teeth. The oesophagus presented pleated mucosa, a stratified squamous epithelium with mucous cells, oesophageal glands and taste buds. The stomach presented cardiac, fundic and pyloric regions, simple prismatic epithelium with tubular glands, with none in the pyloric region. The intestine contains 11-15 pyloric caeca, a simple prismatic epithelium with brush border, goblet cells and lymphocytes. Mucosal cells, oesophageal glands and goblet cells reacted positively to PAS, amylase + PAS, Ab pH 2.5 and Ab pH 0.5. Gastric prismatic cells reacted positively to PAS, amylase + PAS, but only those in the pyloric region reacted positively to Ab pH 2.5 and Ab pH 0.5. The results improve the understanding of the anatomy of S. knerii feeding habits and the presence of mucosubstances in the epithelium, highlights the importance of glycoproteins for passing food through the digestive tract.
