ABSTRACT Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) is a progressive and fatal disease in domestic and wild cats, caused by Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus (FIPV). The disease is characterized by an immunomediated reaction against the virus in various organs. This work described a case report of fibrinous epicarditis caused by FIPV. A male cat, three years old, died and was received to be necropsied. Grossly, soft, multifocal to coalescing, whitish fibrinous exudate, measuring up the 2 centimeters of thickness, was observed in the epicardium, mostly at the apex of the heart. Microscopically, severe, multifocal to coalescing inflammatory infiltrate was observed in the epicardium, composed mainly by macrophages, plasmocytes and lymphocytes, associated with fibrin deposition. Immunohistochemistry was performed for FIPV and was positive in the areas of inflammation in the epicardium. To the author´s knowledge, this is the second report of epicarditis due to FIPV in a cat. Therefore, epicarditis should be considered a differential diagnosis of cardiac diseases in Feline Medicine.

Introduction: it is important for students to have a good physical and mental health in order to acquire the knowledge properly. A study was conducted to determine the socio-educational factors associated with low visual acuity in primary school children from the National College of San Pedro-Piura. Material and methods: a cross-sectional analytical study involving 655 primary school students was conducted. The principal variable was low visual acuity, considered in those with values greater than 20/25, as assessed with the Snellen chart. P values, prevalence ratios and 95% confidence intervals were obtained using generalized linear models. Data were analyzed using STATA version 10.0. Results: a total of 599 students were evaluated, 17% (99) had low visual acuity. Sex was not related to the low visual acuity (p=0.832). As age increased, it was found that children who were between 8-10 and 11-15 years old had 46% (p=0.005) and 68% (p<0.001) less prevalence of low visual acuity, respectively, compared to the children who were 5-7 years old. Conclusions: it is concluded that one in six students had a visual disability associated with their age and grade level. This makes them more prone to problems in their grades, which may have implications for the rest of their lives. This should be taken into account by the institutions to monitor the proper education of children.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The stabilization problem of third-order, time-delay unstable linear systems is analyzed. The systems under consideration have one unstable and two stable poles, which may be complex conjugate. Necessary and sufficient conditions to guarantee the stability of the closed loop system by means of a static output feedback are provided. Using such conditions, a predictor scheme that improves the transient system performance is proposed. To illustrate the application of the proposed strategy, it is applied to an unstable continuously stirred tank reactor model. Simulation results are presented.

This paper analyzes the profile of the Brazilian output in the field of multiple sclerosis from 1981 to 2004. The search was conducted through the MEDLINE and LILACS databases, selecting papers in which the term "multiple sclerosis" was defined as the main topic and "Brazil" or "Brasil" as others. The data were analyzed regarding the themes, the state in Brazil and institution where the papers were produced, the journals where the papers were published, journal's impact factor, and language. The search disclosed 141 documents (91 from MEDLINE and LILACS, and 50 from LILACS only) published in 44 different journals (23 of them MEDLINE-indexed). A total of 111 documents were produced by 17 public universities, 29 by 3 private medical schools and 1 by a non-governmental organization. There were 65 original contributions, 37 case reports, 20 reviews, 6 PhD dissertations, 5 guidelines, 2 validation studies, 2 clinical trials, 2 chapters in textbooks, 1 Master of Science thesis, and 1 patient education handout. The journal impact factor ranged from 0.0217 to 6.039 (median 3.03). Of 91 papers from MEDLINE, 65 were published by Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria. More than 90% of the papers were written in Portuguese. São Paulo was the most productive state in the country, followed by Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Paraná. Eighty-two percent of the Brazilian output came from the Southeastern region.

A continuous assay using internally quenched fluorescent peptides with the general sequence Abz-peptidyl-(Dnp)P-OH (Abz = ortho-aminobenzoic acid; Dnp = 2,4-dinitrophenyl) was optimized for the measurement of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) in human plasma and rat tissues. Abz-FRK(Dnp)P-OH, which was cleaved at the Arg-Lys bond by ACE, was used for the enzyme evaluation in human plasma. Enzymatic activity was monitored by continuous recording of the fluorescence (lambdaex = 320 nm and lambdaem = 420 nm) at 37ºC, in 0.1 M Tris-HCl buffer, pH 7.0, with 50 mM NaCl and 10 µM ZnCl2. The assays can be performed directly in the cuvette of the fluorimeter and the hydrolysis followed for 5 to 10 min. ACE measurements in the plasma of 80 healthy patients with Hip-His-Leu and with Abz-FRK(Dnp)P-OH correlated closely (r = 0.90, P < 0.001). The specificity of the assay was demonstrated by the complete inhibition of hydrolysis by 0.5 µM lisinopril or captopril. Abz-FRK(Dnp)P-OH cleavage by ACE was monitored in rat lung, kidney, heart, and liver homogenates in the presence of a cocktail of inhibitors containing trans-epoxy-succinyl-L-leucylamido-(4-guanido)-butene, pepstatin, phenyl-methylsulfonyl fluoride, N-tosyl-L-phenylalanyl-chloromethyl ketone, and N-tosyl-lysyl-chloromethyl ketone to prevent undesirable hydrolysis. ACE activity in lung, heart and kidney homogenates, but not in liver homogenates, was completely abolished by 0.5 µM lisinopril or captopril. The advantages of the method are the procedural simplicity and the high sensitivity providing a rapid assay for ACE determinations.

The experimental characterization of charge transfer transitions (LM and IV CTs) in surface complexes formed on iron oxides and TiO2, together with the measurements of the rate of magnetite dissolution in the presence of pentacyanoisonicotinatoferrate(II) are used to build and validate a general model for the dissolution of metal oxides mediated by charge transfer processes. A critical surface ensemble, denoted ≡S, is identified for the different cases. For reductive dissolution of iron(III) oxides, ≡S is often an iron(II) surface complex that dissolves in a first order kinetic process; the steady state concentration of ≡S, and hence its rate of dissolution is determined by the balance between its rate of formation and either the rate of oxo-bond breakage or the rate of diffusion/scavenging of the conjugate oxidised form of the reductant. In the case of IVCT within dimeric surface complexes, we postulate that thevibrational activation required for charge transfer also produces labilization; thus, charge transfer and dissolution are concerted processes. Charge trapping by the surface complex following the photochemical formation of an electron-hole pair in the semiconductor also generates a critical ensemble. In this case, however, successful dissolution requires of adequately high rates of removal of both charge carriers, and dissolution is arrested if there are no scavengers for the other charge carrier (the hole, in the case of reductive dissolution). This effect is realized experimentally in the photochemical dissolution of nickel ferrite, with and without oxalic acid as hole scavenger.

Resumo Uma nova espécie de Polyporus, P. indigenus I. Araujo & M.A.
Summary A new species of Polyporus, P. indigenus I. Araujo 8 M.A. Sousa is described. This new species is quite distinct from related species, principally in the size and shape of the pileus and spores, but also In the absence of zoration, hairs or scales and for the stipe being practically sessile. Economic importance and utilization are investigated.
