Resumen Se describen e ilustran en detalle las larvas del último estadio del escarabajo ripario Heterocerus similis Grouvelle y se incluyen notas comparativas con los estadios anteriores. Sobre la base del ancho de la cápsula cefálica y del protórax se lograron identificar cuatro estadios larvales; considerando que los heterocéridos presentan cinco estadios larvales, los estadios identificados probablemente correspondan a los últimos cuatro. El largo de las larvas no permite distinguir entre estadios. La larva de H. similis se compara con la larva de H. freudei (Pacheco), la única otra larva de heterocérido sudamericana descripta.

ABSTRACT The primary chaetotaxy of the head capsule and head appendages of the larva of Chaetarthria bruchi Balfour-Browne is described for the first time. Morphometric characters derived from the head capsule and mouthparts are included, together with detailed illustrations of all characters. Chaetotaxy of C. bruchi is compared with that of C. seminulum (Herbst), the only other Chaetarthriini species for which the chaetotaxy has been described.

RESUMEN La quetotaxia primaria de la cápsula cefálica y de los apéndices cefálicos de la larva de Chaetarthria bruchi Balfour-Browne se describen por primera vez. Caracteres morfométricos derivados de la cabeza y sus apéndices son incluidos junto con ilustraciones detalladas de todos los caracteres. La quetotaxia de C. bruchi se compara con la de C. seminulum (Herbst), la única otra especie de Chaetarthriini para la cual se ha descripto la quetotaxia.

Abstract Larvae of 2 Neotropical species of Haliplus Latreille, 1802 (H. indistinctus Zimmermann, 1928 and H. subseriatus Zimmermann, 1921) are described and illustrated including detailed morphometric and chaetotaxic analyses of the cephalic capsule, head appendages, and legs. Except for the legs, this is the first treatment of larval primary chaetotaxy for the family Haliplidae. The larvae studied herein have 10 abdominal segments, with segment X forking into 2 caudal projections, 1 pretarsal claw, a clasping device on prothoracic legs, and numerous short tracheal gills on the body, characteristics typically found in haliplid larvae. Regarding primary chaetotaxy, they are characterized by the absence of several setae and pores which are commonly present among other families of Hydradephaga, namely seta FR6 on the frontoclypeus, seta PA16 on the parietal, setae AN2 and AN3 and pore ANg on the antenna, setae MX13 and MX14 on the maxilla, and seta CO6 on the coxa. Mandibular seta MN2 is also strongly developed as compared to other hydradephagans. The larvae of the 2 described species can be separated by comparing the distance from the base of segment X to the point at which it forks into caudal projections.

Resumen Se describen e ilustran las larvas de 2 especies neotropicales de Haliplus Latreille, 1802 (H. indistinctus Zimmermann, 1928 y H. subseriatus Zimmermann, 1921), incluyendo análisis detallados de la morfometría y quetotaxia de la cápsula cefálica, apéndices cefálicos y patas. Excepto por las patas, este es el primer tratamiento de la quetotaxia primaria larval para la familia Haliplidae. Las larvas estudiadas presentan 10 segmentos abdominales, con el segmento X biburcado en 2 proyecciones caudales, 1 única uña pretarsal, 1 dispositivo de agarre en las patas protorácicas, y numerosas branquias traqueales cortas en el cuerpo, todas características típicamente encontradas en larvas de halíplidos. Con respecto a la quetotaxia primaria, están caracterizadas por la ausencia de varias setas y poros que están comúnmente presentes en otras familias de Hydradephaga, como la seta FR6 en el frontoclípeo, la seta PA16 en el parietal, las setas AN2 y AN3 y el poro ANg en la antena, las setas MX13 y MX14 en la maxila, y la seta CO6 en la coxa. Además, la seta mandibular MN2 está fuertemente desarrollada en comparación con la de otros hidradéfagos. Las larvas de las 2 especies descritas pueden separarse comparando la distancia desde la base del segmento X hasta el punto en el cual éste se bifurca en las proyecciones caudales.

Abstract: A new species of Stethelmis, S. shepardi sp. nov., is described for Patagonia, Argentina from adults of both sexes. A full description and illustrations of both the adult and the larva of the new species are provided with comments on its habitat and distribution. Adults of the new species are compared with those of S. kaszabi (Hinton 1970) and S. chilensis (Hinton 1945). The larva of S. shepardi is compared with that of S. kaszabi, the other Stethelmis larva described. We also describe and illustrate for the first time the male genitalia of S. kaszabi. A key to the known species of Stethelmis is also included.

ABSTRACT Aeginecta longicauda n. gen., n. sp. is described from material collected from a seasonally astatic aquatic habitat in Argentina. It is only known from the type locality and two male specimens; at this point the female remains unknown. Specific unique gonopod and genital segment features demonstrate that this taxon represents a unique genus within the Thamnocephalidae. Aeginecta n. gen most closely resembles Phallocryptus Biraben, 1951 and Thamnocephalus Packard, 1877. This new genus is easily diagnosed by the compound eye peduncle being extremely short, the frons and anterior surface of antennae II broadened laterally, with an intervening slit through which the compound eye may view the area forward on the animal, and the cercopods are as long as the abdomen. The gonopod proximal portion is bulbous with a transverse cleft, and projects ventrally from the segment. The gonopod distal eversible portion is minute, lamellar, and lies within proximal portion cleft. This is the fifth thamnocephalid genus reported from South America. The Neotropical region has the greatest thamnocephalid generic diversity in the world.

Generic keys for the identification of larvae of Dytiscidae from Argentina are presented. A total of 27 dytiscid genera are recognized in Argentina, included in 16 tribes and seven subfamilies. Twenty-two of the 27 genera are included in the keys. The remaining fi ve genera could not be included because their larvae are unknown (Bidessonotus Régimbart, Brachyvatus Zimmermann, Hemibidessus Zimmermann, Neobidessus Young) or remain poorly known (Cybister Curtis). The keys are presented in English and Spanish. Morphological as well as chaetotaxic characters were included, and an emphasis was made to include easily seen and identifiable characters. However, due to the small size of many dytiscid larvae, some of the characters mentioned in the keys (especially the chaetotaxic ones) are difficult to visualize through the observation with a stereoscopic microscope. Therefore, the use of a compound microscope for the identifi cation is recommended.

Se presentan claves genéricas para la identificación de las larvas de Dytiscidae de la Argentina. Un total de 27 géneros de Dytiscidae son reconocidos en la Argentina, comprendidos en 16 tribus y siete subfamilias. Veintidós de los 27 géneros fueron incluidos en las claves. Los restantes cinco géneros no pudieron ser incluidos porque sus larvas son desconocidas (Bidessonotus Régimbart, Brachyvatus Zimmermann, Hemibidessus Zimmermann, Neobidessus Young) o son conocidas muy imperfectamente (Cybister Curtis). Las claves se presentan en inglés y español. Se incluyeron caracteres morfológicos y de la quetotaxia, y se puso énfasis en incluir caracteres fácilmente visualizables e identificables. Sin embargo, debido al pequeño tamaño de muchas larvas de Dytiscidae, algunos de los caracteres mencionados en las claves (especialmente los de la quetotaxia) son difíciles de visualizar a través de la observación con el microscopio estereoscópico. Por lo tanto, se recomienda el uso del microscopio compuesto para la identificación.

This paper presents a list of aquatic and semiaquatic Coleoptera collected during a biodiversity study carried out in Salto Encantado and Valle del Cuñá Pirú Provincial Park. This study aims to improve the knowledge of this protected area located in Misiones Province. Permanent and semi-permanent lotic and lentic habitats were sampled. Seventy-four species of beetles in 44 genera and 14 families were recorded: Haliplidae, Noteridae, Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae, Hydrochidae, Hydrophilidae, Hydraenidae, Staphylinidae, Scirtidae, Psephenidae, Limnichidae, Lutrochidae, Dryopidae and Elmidae. New records for the province and for Argentina are listed, and the presence of new species is mentioned.

Se presentan los resultados de la recolección de coleópteros acuáticos y semiacuáticos del Parque Provincial Salto Encantado y Valle del Cuñá Pirú, con el objeto de contribuir al conocimiento de la biodiversidad del área protegida mencionada, de la provincia de Misiones. Los sitios de muestreo incluyeron ambientes lóticos y lénticos. Se registraron 74 especies de coleópteros, distribuidas en 44 géneros y 14 familias: Haliplidae, Noteridae, Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae, Hydrochidae, Hydrophilidae, Hydraenidae, Staphylinidae, Scirtidae, Psephenidae, Limnichidae, Lutrochidae, Dryopidae y Elmidae. Se mencionan nuevas citas para la provincia y para la Argentina, así como la presencia de especies nuevas para la ciencia.

The evolution of four bionomic and morphological characters is compared under five different phylogenetic hypotheses depicting the family relationships of the superfamily Hydrophiloidea (s.str.). These characters are: adult habitat (aquatic or riparian), larval habitat (terrestrial, aquatic or riparian), type of respiratory system in larvae (holopneustic or metapneustic) and number of abdominal segments in larvae (tenth segment not reduced or tenth segment reduced). Even though no phylogenetic hypothesis is favored above the others, they are evaluated according to how they explain the sequence of state changes of the above mentioned characters, and those that explain this sequence more parsimoniously are brought out.

Se comparan cinco hipótesis filogenéticas de las relaciones, a nivel de familia, de la superfamilia Hydrophiloidea (s.str.) en función de la evolución de cuatro caracteres bionómicos y morfológicos: hábitat de adultos (acuático o ripario), hábitat de larvas (terrestre, acuático o ripario), tipo de sistema respiratorio en larvas (holopnéustico o metapnéustico) y número de segmentos abdominales en larvas (décimo segmento no reducido o décimo segmento reducido). Si bien no se favorece una hipótesis sobre la otra, éstas se evalúan por el nivel explicativo de la secuencia de cambios de estado de los caracteres de interés, y se destaca cuáles de ellas explican de forma más parsimoniosa la secuencia de cambios.

New records of aquatic Coleoptera, in the families Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae, Hydrophilidae and Elmidae, are reported for the Chubut province (Argentina). The Sialidae (Megaloptera), genus Protosialis Weele, is reported for the first time in Argentina.

Se informa acerca de nuevos hallazgos de coleópteros acuáticos, de Dytiscidae, Gyrinidae, Hydrophilidae y Elmidae para la provincia de Chubut (Argentina). También se cita por primera vez a las Sialidae (Megaloptera), género Protosialis Weele, para la República Argentina.

A new locality and the analysis of stomach contents for the poorly known rodent Notiomysedwardsii (Thomas) is presented. The specimen was captured in a pitfall-drift fence trap located in a site with severe anthropogenic modifications close to the city of Esquel (Colonia Nahuel Pan, 42º57’ S, 71º10’ W), Department of Futaleufú, Province of Chubut (Argentina). External and craneomandibular measurements of the specimen are compared with those in the literature. Remains of a scorpion (Scorpiones: Bothriuridae) and several tipulid (Diptera: Tipulidae) larvae were found in the stomach, confirming that the species relies heavily on a diet of arthropods.

Se documenta una nueva localidad y el análisis del contenido estomacal para el ratón topo Notiomys edwardsii (Thomas), a partir de un ejemplar capturado en una trampa de caída colocada en un sitio con importantes modificaciones antrópicas, cercano a la ciudad de Esquel (Colonia Nahuel Pan, 42º57’ S y 71º10’ O, departamento Futaleufú). Se comparan sus medidas externas y cráneo-mandibulares con los ejemplares mencionados en la literatura. En el análisis del contenido estomacal se encontraron restos de un escorpión (Scorpiones: Bothriuridae) y larvas de tipúlidos (Diptera: Tipulidae), confirmando el carácter animalívoro de la especie.
