Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar patrones de calidad de semillas y plántulas de Switenia macrophylla King, Cedrelinga cateniformis (Ducke) Duckey y Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam) Urb. como base para la restauración. Se realizó la prueba de viabilidad de semillas mediante Tetrazolio al 1 % (2,3,5- cloruro trifenil tetrazolio) durante tres tiempos de tinción, se consideró el porcentaje de viabilidad y niveles de vigor según el patrón topológico de tinción. Se determinó la velocidad de germinación, capacidad germinativa, e índices morfológicos de calidad de plantas, a través de la relación parte aérea-parte radical, esbeltez, grado de lignificación y calidad de Dickson. Se comprobó el mayor porcentaje de semillas viables con el máximo tiempo de tinción (3 horas). La categoría vigor medio fue superior en las tres especies, determinado por un patrón de tinción rojizo parcial como expresión de su calidad fisiológica, lo cual se reflejó en la respuesta a la germinación. Los índices de calidad morfológica permitieron identificar la potencialidad de crecimiento y desarrollo de las especies para su aclimatación al sitio. El análisis de correspondencia fue significativo (p≤0.05), lo cual facilitó la formación de grupos de calidad, resultando C. cateniformis de alta calidad como indicador de su potencialidad para cubrir las necesidades de restauración en las condiciones amazónicas.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality patterns of Switenia macrophylla, Cedrelinga cateniformis and Ochroma pyramidale seeds and seedlings in response to restoration. The seed viability test was performed using 1 % tetrazolium (2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride) during three staining times and the percentage of viability and vigor levels were considered according to the topological staining pattern. Germination speed, germination capacity, and morphological indices of plant quality were determined using the aboveground belowground ratio, slenderness, degree of lignification and Dickson's quality. The highest percentage of viable seeds with the maximum staining time (3 hours) was verified. The medium vigor category was higher in the three species, as determined by a partial reddish staining pattern as an expression of their physiological quality, which was reflected in the response to germination. The morphological quality indices allowed us to identify the species’ potential for growth and development for acclimatization to the area. The correspondence analysis was significant (p≤0.05), which facilitated the formation of quality groups, C. cateniformis was found to be of a high-enough quality as an indicator of its potential to cover restoration needs in Amazonian conditions.

RESUMO A Ochroma pyramidale é uma espécie de crescimento rápido com alto valor comercial. Os maiores volumes de sua madeira são obtidos de plantações comerciais; no entanto, há muito poucos estudos sobre sua produção em berçário. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito da concentração de N, P, K e frequência de fertilização na resposta morfofisiológica da pirâmide de O. pyramidale cultivada em biopots usando a metodologia de superfície de resposta. O experimento foi implementado utilizando a metodologia da superfície de resposta, para a qual foram utilizadas 30 mudas por série experimental. A experiência consistiu na aplicação de diferentes concentrações de N, P, K e duas frequências de fertilização de acordo com o projeto ideal (Personalizado). As variáveis de resposta foram aumento da altura, aumento do diâmetro e assimilação de CO2. A partir dos resultados obtidos, o efeito positivo da fertilização N, P e K sobre as variáveis em estudo foi confirmado. A partir dos dados experimentais, foi encontrado um modelo polinomial quadrático de segunda ordem para prever a resposta morfofisiológica da espécie. A frequência da fertilização durante o intervalo de tempo estudado não foi significativa.

ABSTRACT Ochroma pyramidale is a fast-growing species with high commercial value. The largest volumes of its wood are obtained from commercial plantations; however, there are very few studies of its production in nurseries. The objective of this study was analyse the effect of N, P, K concentration and fertilisation frequency on morpho-physiological response of O. pyramidale grown in biopots using response surface methodology. The experiment was set up using the response surface methodology for which 30 seedlings were used per experimental run. The experiment consisted of applying different concentrations of N, P, K and two fertilisation frequencies according to the optimal (Custom) design. The response variables were height increase, diameter increase and CO2 assimilation. From the results obtained, we confirmed the positive effect of N, P and K fertilisation on the variables under study. From the experimental data, a second-order quadratic polynomial model was found that allows the prediction of the morpho-physiological response of the species. The frequency of fertilisation during the time interval studied was not significant.

RESUMEN Ochroma pyramidale es una especie de rápido crecimiento y alto valor comercial. Los mayores volúmenes de su madera se obtienen de plantaciones comerciales; sin embargo, existen muy pocos estudios sobre su producción en vivero. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar el efecto de la concentración de N, P, K y la frecuencia de fertilización sobre la respuesta morfofisiológica de O. pyramidale cultivada en tubetes utilizando la metodología de superficie de respuesta. El experimento se estableció utilizando la metodología de superficie de respuesta para lo cual se utilizaron 30 plántulas por corrida experimental. El experimento consistió en aplicar diferentes concentraciones de N, P, K y dos frecuencias de fertilización según el diseño óptimo (personalizado). Las variables de respuesta fueron el aumento de altura, el aumento de diámetro y la asimilación de CO2. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, se confirmó el efecto positivo de la fertilización con N, P y K sobre las variables en estudio. A partir de los datos experimentales se encontró un modelo polinómico cuadrático de segundo orden que permite predecir la respuesta morfofisiológica de la especie. La frecuencia de fertilización durante el intervalo de tiempo estudiado no fue significativa.

Resumen Este estudio evaluó el efecto de inclusión de la harina de tubérculos de taro de rechazo (RTTF) sobre el desempeño productivo en cerdos híbridos comerciales (Landrace × Duroc × Pietrain) durante el período de posdestete. El experimento se estableció bajo un diseño completamente aleatorizado, conformando cuatro tratamientos (0, 10, 20 y 30 % de inclusión de RTTF en la dieta), empleando un total de 60 lechones con 15 repeticiones cada uno. Se determinó el consumo de materia seca diario (CMSD), ganancia de peso diario (GPD), conversión alimentaria (CA), peso final (PF), presencia de diarreas, mortalidad y costo de producción. La RTTF presentó alto contenido de materia seca, extractos libres de nitrógeno, energía bruta, ácido aspártico, ácido glutámico, potasio, hierro, polifenoles y actividad antioxidante. La inclusión de RTTF en la dieta de los cerdos en el periodo completo (30-58 d) no ocasionó diarreas ni muertes y mostró un efecto cuadrático sobre el PF (p < 0,001), CMSD (p < 0,001), y produjo efecto lineal sobre la GPD (p = 0,006), CA (p = 0,003) y costo de producción (p < 0,001). En conclusión, la inclusión de RTTF en la dieta de los cerdos después del destete (30-58 d), entre 0 y 30 %, no mostró efecto sobre el PF y CMSD, con una ligera disminución en la GPD y CA, y con un efecto lineal en la reducción del costo de producción.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of the inclusion of rejected taro tuber flour (RTTF) on the productive performance in commercial hybrid pigs (Landrace × Duroc × Pietrain) during their post-weaning period. The experiment was established under a completely randomized design, comprising four treatments (0, 10, 20, and 30% inclusion of RTTF in the diet), using a total of 60 piglets with 15 repetitions each. The average daily feed intake (ADFI), average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion (FC), final body weight (BW), presence of diarrheas, mortality, and production cost, were determined. RTTF showed a high dry matter content, nitrogen-free extracts, gross energy, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, potassium, iron, polyphenols, and antioxidant activity. RTTF inclusion in the diet of pigs in the entire period (30-58 d) did not cause diarrhea or deaths and showed a quadratic effect on BW (p < 0.001) and ADFI (p < 0.001) and produced a linear effect on ADG (p = 0.006), FC (p = 0.003) and production cost (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the inclusion of RTTF in the diet of pigs after weaning (30-58 d) ranging between 0 and 30 % showed no effect on BW and ADFI, with a slight decrease in ADG and FC and a linear effect on production cost reduction.

Resumen Se evaluó la biomasa aérea acumulada en lo concerniente a familias botánicas en un bosque siempreverde piemontano sometido a diferentes grados de intervención en la zona alta de la microcuenca del río Puyo. En cinco transectos de 0.1 ha se registraron las especies con DAP ≥ 10 cm. Se encontró menor número de familias en sitios con alto grado de perturbación. La biomasa aérea varió de 161.84 a 339.70 Mg.ha-1, presentándose mayor acumulación en individuos de menor clase diamétrica. Las familias con mayor índice de valor de importancia de biomasa fueron Moraceae, Arecaceae y Euphorbiaceae, reconocidas por su potencial en cuanto a estructura y carbono. El análisis de correspondencia canónica sin tendencia (DCA) indicó variación en la contribución de biomasa para cada sitio, existiendo un pequeño número de familias para mantener las reservas de carbono. Los resultados de este estudio brindan información relevante que facilita la toma de decisiones con respecto la restauración de sitios perturbados.

Abstract The accumulated aerial biomass was evaluated at the level of botanical families in an evergreen montane forest subject to different degrees of intervention in the upper Puyo river watershed. In five transects of 0.1 ha, species with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were recorded. Fewer families were found in sites with a high degree of disturbance. The aerial biomass varied from 161.84 to 339.70 Mg.ha-1, with greater accumulation in individuals of smaller diametric class. The families with the highest biomass importance value index were Moraceae, Arecaceae and Euphorbiaceae, recognized for their potential in terms of structure and carbon. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) indicated variation in the contribution of biomass for each site, having a small number of families to maintain carbon stocks. This provides relevant information that facilitates decision making for restoration in disturbed sites.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the photosynthetic responses of Pinus caribaea Morelet var. caribaea Barret & Golfari and Pinus tropicalis Morelet in the ecological conditions of Pinar del Río, Cuba. Data were collected in March 2015 using an open system IRGA-porometer LI-6400. The response of both species was measured by increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide and photosynthetically active radiation. Results indicated that under the same environmental conditions, P. caribaea var. caribaea is more productive than P. tropicalis, since P. caribaea var. caribaea, showed higher values of net CO2 assimilation and reaching the CO2 compensation point at 77 μmol mol-1, against the 113 μmol mol-1 registered by P. tropicalis. The species P. caribaea var. caribaea reached light saturation at lower values than P. tropicalis, and showed greater efficiency for the carboxylation of Rubisco. The results indicated that both species perform C3 photosynthetic mechanism.

Resumen La naranjilla (Solanum quitoense Lam.), constituye un rubro económico de vital importancia para la Amazonía ecuatoriana debido a los múltiples beneficios que brinda, aunque requiere de estudios que permitan fundamentar las bases para el manejo del cultivo de la naranjilla. El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la influencia de variables socioeconómicas en la producción de naranjilla de la comunidad de Wamaní, provincia Napo en la Amazonía Ecuatoriana. Para el estudio, se realizó un cuestionario de tipo grupal a 40 productores de naranjilla en la región, el cual se estructuró con base a tres niveles, los cuales comprendieron datos sobre la propiedad, manejo del cultivo y aspectos socio-económicos. Adicionalmente, se aplicó un análisis factorial para reducir la dimensionalidad de las variables. Los resultados mostraron un patrón de distribución de tierras propio lo cual es favorable para desarrollar la economía familiar. Se constató que el cultivo de la naranjilla es el rubro de mayor importancia en la comunidad aunque existen otros cultivos que garantizan la diversificación de los sistemas productivos lo cual se refleja en los indicadores socieconómicos. La prueba T de muestras independientes, indicó que no existen diferencias significativas entre los indicadores para la forma de manejo limpia y con químicos (p>0.05), lo que demuestra la factibilidad de uso para el cultivo de naranjilla limpia como un producto más sano con beneficios adicionales para los productores rurales. El análisis factorial permitió la reducción de las 16 variables estudiadas en tres componentes asociados a lo económico, social y productivo, que explicaron el 79.46% de la varianza total acumulada.

Abstract Naranjilla (Solanum quitoense Lam.), is an economic input of vital importance for the Ecuadorian Amazon due to multiple benefits that offers, although it requires studies that provide a basis for the naranjilla cultivation management. The aim of this research was to determine the influence of socioeconomic variables on the naranjilla production from the rural community of Wamani, Napo province in the Ecuadorian Amazon. For the study, a group-type questionnaire was conducted to 40 rural producers of naranjilla in the region, which was structured based on three levels, which included data on the property, crop management and socio-economic aspects. Additionally, a factor analysis was applied to reduce the variables dimensionality. The results showed a pattern of own land distribution which is favorable to develop the family economy. It was found that naranjilla cultivation is the most important item in the community, although there are other crops that guarantee the diversification of the productive systems, which is reflected in the socioeconomic indicators. The T-test of independent samples, indicated that there are no significant differences among indicators for clean and chemical crop management (p>0.05), which demonstrates the feasibility of use for the cultivation of clean naranjilla as a healthier product with additional benefits for rural producers. The factorial analysis have allowed the reduction of the 16 evaluated variables in three components associated with the economic, social and productive indicators, which explained 79.46% of the total accumulated variance.

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to evaluate the water response of Talipariti elatum cultivated in different substrates. Sugarcane straw, peat, biochar and mixtures of sugarcane straw and biochar, and peat and biochar were used. The physical properties of each substrate and the water parameters of the species were determined based on the pressure-volume curve. The osmotic potential at maximum saturation and the turgor loss point presented a similar behaviour with a decreasing tendency. We found significant differences between the beginning and end of the period. The values ranged from -1.17MPa to -1.36MPa and -1.49MPa to -1.74MPa, which indicated the development of osmotic adjustment mechanisms. The modulus of elasticity values ranged between 8.10MPa and 11.20MPa at the start and between 6.65MPa and 9.39MPa at the end, indicating elastic adjustment. The plants in the substrates with lower moisture retention showed lower values of solute potentials and cell wall elasticity modulus.

Natural forests of Pinus tropicalis Morelet in Cuba have been altered by inadequate management. The aim of this study was to characterize the structure of a disturbed forest of Pinus tropicalis in Galalón, Pinar del Rio. We carried out a floristic inventory, and determined the ecological importance value and the increased ecological importance index. The alpha diversity was calculated by means of the reciprocal of the Simpson index (1/D) and the Jackknife index. The beta diversity was estimated through the Morisita-Horn and Jaccard. The degree of interference of the area was evaluated by means of indicators of changes in the ecosystem. We identified 30 genera and 31 species from 22 families. The structural parameters indicated that the species of higher ecological importance were P. tropicalis, P. caribaea var. caribaea and Byrsonima crassifolia. The floristic diversity was low and the similarity indexes yielded three groups differing in floristic composition.

Los bosques naturales de Pinus tropicalis Morelet en Cuba han sido alterados por prácticas inadecuadas de aprovechamiento forestal. Esta investigación tiene el objetivo de caracterizar la estructura de un bosque perturbado de Pinus tropicalis en Galalón, Pinar del Río. Para ello se realizó un inventario florístico, se determinaron los índices de valor de importancia ecológica y de importancia ecológica ampliado. Se calculó la diversidad alfa mediante el recíproco del índice de Simpson (1/D) y el índice de Jackknife, así como la diversidad beta por medio de Morisita-Horn y Jaccard. Se evaluó el grado de perturbación del área mediante indicadores de cambios en el ecosistema. Se identificaron un total 22 familias, 30 géneros y 31 especies. Los parámetros estructurales indicaron que las especies de mayor importancia ecológica son P. tropicalis, P. caribaea var. caribaea y Byrsonima crassifolia. La diversidad florística se calificó de baja y la similitud resultó en tres grupos diferenciados por su composición florística.

Neuropsychiatric diseases affect more than 10 % of the Cuban population and 25 % worldwide. Most drugs used to treat central nervous system disorders are expensive and create severe side reactions. Efforts are currently being developed for the implementation of secondary metabolites such as environmentally sustainable sources for the treatment of nervous system diseases, including stroke and other Parkinson's-type neuropathologies, and Huntington's motor disorders, enabling an effective neuroprotection as well as short periods of neuroregeneration time with minimal sequels. The objective was to evaluate the neuroprotective and neuroregenerative action of sodium salts of isolated resin acids from Cuban conifers. The study results suggest that the sodium salt of resin acids can be used as a structural bioisosteric isoanalogue precursor with specific therapeutic actions such as neuroregeneration and neuroprotection in the treatment of ischemic diseases.

Las enfermedades neuropsiquiátricas afectan a más de 10 % de la población cubana y alcanzan 25 % a nivel mundial. La mayoría de los fármacos empleados para el tratamiento de trastornos del sistema nervioso central son costosos y generan severas reacciones colaterales. Actualmente, se desarrollan esfuerzos para la aplicación de metabolitos secundarios como fuentes ecológicamente sostenibles para tratamiento de patologías del sistema nervioso -incluyendo isquemias y otras neuropatologías tipo Parkinson, Alzheimer y trastornos motores de Huntington-, que permitan una neuroprotección efectiva, así como una neurorregeneración en cortos periodos, con mínimas secuelas. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la acción neurorregeneradora y neuroprotectora de la sal de sodio de ácidos resínicos aislados de colofonia de coníferas cubanas; los resultados del estudio sugieren que esta sal puede utilizarse en calidad de precursores estructurales de isoanálogos bioisostéricos con acción terapéutica específica tipo neuroprotectora y neurorregeneradora en el tratamiento de patologías isquémicas.
