Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the efficiency of soybean oversowing, using cover crops, in reducing weed emergence and its reflections on the productivity of the soybean cultivated in the following season. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, in split-plot, with four replications. The soybean was sown four times: 1) 10/27/2005, 2) 11/10/2005, 3) 11/24/2005 and 4) 12/14/2005, under a no-tillage system, corresponding to four times of soybean oversowing, occurring respectively, on 01/30/2006; b) 02/13/2006; c) 02/22/2006; and d) 03/14/2006. Six cover crops were evaluated [Brachiaria brizantha, B. ruziziensis, B. decumbes, Eleusine coracana, Pennisetum glaucum and cover crop - sorghum hybrid (Sorghum bicolor cv. Bicolor) with Sudan- grass (Sorghum bicolor cv. Sudanense)] and untreated (spontaneous vegetation) in four oversowing times. Oversowing was performed manually when the soybean reached the R7 stadium (beginning of defoliation during physiological maturation), in each of the four sowing times of the 2005/06 soybean crop. The first cover crop desiccation was carried out on 10/23/2006. After 20 days, the second desiccation was applied, followed by soybean sowing, cultivar MSOY 6101, early cycle, 0.45 m spaced, aimed at a population of 500.000 plants ha-1 . Soybean oversowing, especially when using brachiaria, showed to be an important tool for the integrated management of weed plants, since it provides a larger biomass contribution and soil cover and sustainability to no-till systems in the cerrado.

This study aimed to evaluate Tifton 85 and Brachiaria brizantha tolerance glyphosate and verity Brachiaria brizantha control in an established Tifton 85 pasture area. Rates of 0; 720; 1.440; 2.160; and 2.880 g ha-1 of glyphosate were tested in to an experiment arranged in a randomized block design, with four replicates divided into 3.5 m x 3.0 m, totaling 10.5 m², and only 7.5 m² of useful area. Herbicide efficiency in B. brizantha control and intoxication level on Tifton 85 plants were evaluated at 15, 30 and 60 days after application (DAA), following the scale from 0 (absence of control and/or intoxication) to 100 (total control or plant death). At 300 DAA, the forage plants of both species were cut and dried to evaluate production and sprouting potential. Control superior to 90% of B. brizantha plants was observed from 1,473.75 and 1,721.25 g ha-1 of glyphosate rates, respectively at 30 and 60 DAA. The intoxication of Tifton 85 plants referring to B. brizantha control rates were 24.90 and 4.13%, respectively. At 60 DAA, 18.22% of Tifton 85 plants intoxication was observed at the highest rate evaluated (2.880 g ha-1 of glyphosate). Absence of B. brizantha dry matter production occurred at 300 DAA, at 2.160 g ha¹ herbicide rate as a result of efficient control. Results showed higher tolerance of Tifton 85 plants to glyphosate in relation to B. brizantha plants, allowing this species control in established Tifton 85 pasture, with no damage to the cultivated forage.

Multiplex PCR was optimized to detect Clostridium chauvoei and Clostridium septicum in pure cultures. In each reaction, a pair of primers for a specific segment of the flagellin gene of C. chauvoei and a pair of primers for a specific segment of alpha toxin gene of C. septicum were employed. Reference strains of both microorganisms were used as control. The multiplex PCR was evaluated by testing 16 clinical isolates of C. chauvoei from ruminants, 15 clinical isolates of C. septicum from ruminants and, four vaccine strains of each one of these agents. Reference strains of both microorganisms were used as control. To evaluate the specificity, genomic DNA of the following microorganisms was used: C. sordellii, C. novyi type A, C. novyi type B, C. perfringens type A, C. haemolyticum, C. botulinum type D, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhimurium. All the isolates and vaccine strains of C. chauvoei and C. septicum were positive by PCR assay and cross reactions were not observed with the other species of clostridia, the other bacterial species or amongst both investigated agents. The smallest concentrations of DNA detected from C. chauvoei and C. septicum were 45pg/µl and 30pg/µl, respectively. The multiplex PCR was useful for the specific identification of C. chauvoei and C. septicum in pure cultures.

Most contacts with food protein and microbiota antigens occur at the level of the gut mucosa. In animal models where this natural stimulation is absent, such as germ-free and antigen-free mice, the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and systemic immunological activities are underdeveloped. We have shown that food proteins play a critical role in the full development of the immune system. C57BL/6 mice weaned to a diet in which intact proteins are replaced by equivalent amounts of amino acids (Aa diet) have a poorly developed GALT as well as low levels of serum immunoglobulins (total Ig, IgG, and IgA, but not IgM). In the present study, we evaluated whether the introduction of a protein-containing diet in 10 adult Aa-fed C57BL/6 mice could restore their immunoglobulin levels and whether this recovery was dependent on the amount of dietary protein. After the introduction of a casein-containing diet, Aa-fed mice presented a fast recovery (after 7 days) of secretory IgA (from 0.33 to 0.75 mg/mL, while in casein-fed mice this value was 0.81 mg/mL) and serum immunoglobulin levels (from 5.39 to 10.25 mg/mL of total Ig). Five percent dietary casein was enough to promote the restoration of secretory IgA and serum immunoglobulin levels to a normal range after 30 days feeding casein diet (as in casein-fed mice - 15% by weight of diet). These data suggest that the defect detected in the immunoglobulin levels was a reversible result of the absence of food proteins as an antigenic stimulus. They also indicate that the deleterious consequences of malnutrition at an early age for some immune functions may be restored by therapeutic intervention later in life.

Diarrhea in suckling piglets caused by Clostridium perfringens type A was diagnosed in industrial (technified) swine farms of the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo (Brazil), based on isolation and identification of bacterium by biochemical tests, detection of alpha toxin in animal bioassays, and PCR. This seems to be the first report of clostridial enterotoxaemia in piglets by C. perfringens type A in Brazil and allowed specific procedures to control the disease.

Some aspects of SO4² absorption by excised roots of "Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench" namely, inibition effects of NaF, KCN, 2,4- DNP and factors such as aeration, solution pH and temperature on the rate of absorption were studied. The excised roots showed multiphasic mecanism of SO4²- absorption. The relative absorption rates, presented by three varieties, were in decreasing order: Tey-101, Contibrasil-101 and Dekalb-E-57. Inhibition effects on the absorption of SO4²- by excised roots were shown in the case of the three ihibitors studied hereof-. Aeration and solution temperature are important factors on SO4²- absorption. At the external solutio n concentration of Na,2SO(4)10-³M the best fitted equation to the experimental values was shown to be: umoles/g dry matter = 1,639- 1,585 exp. (-0,006618t)
