Realizamos durante um ano completo coletas sistemáticas de flebótomos em Vargem Grande, onde recentemente encontráramos Lutzomyia intermedia naturalmente infectada por Leishmania braziliensis. Capturamos flebótomos pertencentes a doze espécies. Tanto dentro de casa quanto no peridomicílio, as capturas em isca humana e com armadilha luminosa, revelaram a grande predominância de L. intermedia seguida de L. migonei. Na plantação predominou L. migonei. Nas coletas simultâneas em homem e cão, L. intermedia foi mais freqüente no primeiro e L. migonei no segundo.

In Vargem Grande, an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis in State of Rio de Janeiro, where Lutzomyia intermedia had been found infected with Leishmania braziliensis, we performed a series of caputes of sandflies to increase the knowledge on their behaviour. The following species were found among 8,671 sandflies collected: L. intermedia, L. migonei, L. longipalpis, L. lanei, L. fischeri, L. firmatoi, L. monticola, L schreiberi, L. whitmani, L. pelloni, L. barrettpi e L. (Pi) sp. inside houses and outdoors close to the houses, on human bait and in light traps, the predominant species was L. intermedia, followed by L. migonei, both being more numerous between 9 and 11 p.m. than from 6 to 8 p.m. In a plantation, L. migonei was predominant. In simultaneous captures on man and dog as baits, L. intermedia was more frequent on the former, L. migonei on the latter.

Durante dois anos completos - outubro de 1981 a setembro de 1983 - capturamos flebótomos em armadilhas luminosas no Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos. As armadilhas eram colocadas, semanalmente, em pontos estratégicos na floresta, sempre no mesmo local e hora, ficando expostas por 12 horas. Foram gastas 732 horas e obtidos 2.730 flebótomos pertencentes a 17 espécies, quatro do gênero Brumptomyia França & Parrot, 1921 e 13 do gênero Lutzomyia França, 1924. a proporção de machos em relação ao número total foi de 76,3%. As espécies L. barrettoi, L. ayrozai e L. hirsuta corresponderam a 95% do total, sendo que a primeria somou quase o dobro de exemplares das outras duas juntas. L. ayrozai foi a mais numerosa na época quente e úmida e L. hirsuta na masi fria e seca, do mesmo modo que L. barrettoi, sendo que esta só ocorreu nesta época do ano. O número de espécies e espécimens foi bem maior na área B, onde as armadilhas foram colocadas perto do solo, próximas a tocas de animais silvestres, do que na área A, onde foram instaladas afastadas do solo, em local de vegetação mais fechada e perto de árvores com raízes tabulares. Após o repouso pós-alimentar, na procura de locais adequados para a postura, acreditamos que as fêmeas tenham maior atração pela fonte luminosa, pois verificamos um número considerável de fêmeas grávidas. Também em armadilhas luminosas constatamos que a lua nova foi mais favorável à coleta de flebótomos e a lua cheia a de menor rendimento.

During two full years - from October 1981 to September 1983 - we captured sandflies using light traps in the National Park of Serra dos Órgãos, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The traps were strategically located in the forest once every week, in the same place, from 6 p.m to 6 a.m. on the next day. In 732 hours, 2,730 sandflies of 17 species were collected, four of the species belonged to the genus Brumptomyia França & Parrot, 1921 and 13 to the genus Lutzomyia França, 1924. Males accounted for 76.3% of all specimens. L. barrettoi, L. ayrozai and L. hirsuta corresponded to 95% of the total and the first was almost twice as numerous as the other two taken jointly. L. ayrozai was more abundant in the warm wet season, L. hirsuta in the cold dry sease, which was the only part of the year when L. barrettoi could be found. The number of species and specimens was greater in an area (B) where the traps were placed near the ground, close to wild animal burrows, than in another area (A) in which the traps were located far from the ground with thick vegetation and trees with tubular roots. We believe that after feeding the females are attracted to the source of light, because a considerable number of pregnent specimens were found in the traps. As we had previously observed in captures using human baits, the sandflies were more numerous in the light traps during the new moon that at full moon.

Os resultados obtidos de outubro de 1980 a setembro de 1982, confirmaram a preferência dos flebótomos pelos horários crepuscular e noturno para hematofagia. Somente foram capturados durante o dia quando o tempo estava encoberto ou nos meses de verão com escurecimento repentino, ocasionado por prenúncios de grandes precipitações, muito comuns nessa época do ano. Nos três períodos por nós estudados - matutino, vespertino e noturno - observamos um equilíbrio entre L. ayrozai e L. hirsuta e um certo ecletismo, quanto à hora de sugar, de L. shannoni e L. fischeri, especialmente a primeira. Com as capturas de 24 horas consecutivas constatamos a predileção de L. ayrozai pela hematofagia nas horas mais avançadas da noite, entre 23h e 2h, enquanto L. hirsuta foi mais freqüente entre 18h e 23h. Ambas, contudo, podem picar durante todo o período desde que as condições de temperatura e umidade sejam favoráveis.

In systematic captures performed at the Serra dos Órgãos National Park, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from October 1980 through September 1982, the preference of sandflies to feed at sunset or at night was confirmed. During the day sandflies were found to bite only when the weather was cloudy or during the dark moments that precede rainstorms which are frequent in summer. When three periods of captures were compared - morning (6 to 8 a.m.), sunset (5 to 7 p.m.) and night (7:30 to 9:30 p.m.) -, L. ayrozai and L. hirsuta behaved similarly, feeding mostly at sunset, while L. shannoni was more eclectic and L. fischeri preferred to bite at night. In 2-hour captures performed during 24 consecutive hours the peaks of hematophagic activity were different for L. ayrozoi and L. hirsuta: from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. for the former and 6 to 11 p.m. for the latter. However, both can feed at any hour if conditions of temperature and humidity are favourable.
