RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos fisiológicos, sedativos e analgésicos da administração peridural de ropivacaína isolada ou associada à morfina ou à metadona. Para tal, 24 cadelas submetidas à ovário-histerectomia receberam acepromazina, e a anestesia foi induzida e mantida com propofol e isoflurano (FiO2 = 1,0), respectivamente. De acordo com o protocolo peridural, formaram-se três grupos de igual número: GR (ropivacaína - 2,0mg/kg); GRMETA (ropivacaína - 2,0mg/kg e metadona - 0,3mg/kg) e GRMORF (ropivacaína - 2,0mg/kg e morfina - 0,1mg/kg). Registraram-se os parâmetros fisiológicos intraoperatórios e os graus de sedação e analgesia pós-operatórios. No GR constataram-se maiores médias de pressões arteriais 30 minutos após a anestesia epidural em relação ao GRMETA (sistólica e média) e ao final do procedimento cirúrgico comparativamente ao GRMORF (sistólica, diastólica e média). Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os grupos relativamente à analgesia e ao grau de sedação pós-operatórios. A administração epidural de ropivacaína é segura e eficaz e proporciona boa analgesia, independentemente da sua associação com morfina ou metadona.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological, sedative and analgesic effects of epidural administration of ropivacaine sole or associated to morphine or methadone. Twenty-four bitches were submitted to ovariohysterectomy and received acepromazine and after, propofol and isoflurane (FiO 2 = 1.0) for anesthesia induction and maintenance, respectively. Based on established epidural protocol (L7-S1), three groups were formed: GR (ropivacaine - 2.0mg/kg); GRMETA (ropivacaine - 2.0mg/kg and methadone - 0.3mg/kg) and GRMORF (ropivacaine - 2.0mg/kg and morphine - 0.1mg/kg). Intraoperative physiological parameters and degrees of postoperative sedation and analgesia were recorded. In the GR, the means of arterial pressures, 30 minutes after epidural anesthesia, were higher compared with GRMETA (systolic and mean) and, at the end of the clinical procedure, compared to GRMORF (systolic, diastolic and mean). Differences between groups were not observed for postoperative analgesia and degree of sedation. Epidural administration of ropivacaine is safe and effective and provides good analgesia regardless of its association with morphine or methadone.

RESUMO Objetivou-se comparar as alterações cardiorrespiratórias e a analgesia pós-operatória promovidas pela dexmedetomidina e pelo tramadol, quando associados ao midazolam, em felinas. Para tal, foram selecionadas 18 gatas hígidas, divididas em dois grupos randomizados: GDM, tratadas com dexmedetomidina (10µg/kg) e GTM, tratadas com tramadol (2mg/kg), ambos associados a midazolam (0,2mg/kg,) IM. Após 15 minutos, procedeu-se à indução anestésica com propofol (1,46±0,79mL), mantendo-se a anestesia com isoflurano. As felinas foram submetidas à ovário-histerectomia, registrando-se as variáveis cardiorrespiratórias 15 minutos após a MPA (M0), 15 minutos após a indução (M15) e sequencialmente a cada cinco minutos, até o término do procedimento cirúrgico (M20, M25, M30, M35 e M40). A avaliação da dor iniciou-se 30 minutos após o término do procedimento cirúrgico (MP30) e sequencialmente em intervalos de 30 minutos (MP60, MP90, MP120). A partir do MP120, as avaliações foram registradas a cada hora (MP180, MP240 e MP360). A associação dexmedetomidina-midazolam infere diminuição inicial de frequência cardíaca (FC) sem significado clínico e está relacionada à sedação mais pronunciada, à analgesia menor e menos duradoura e a episódios de êmese, quando comparada à associação tramadol-midazolam. Ambos os protocolos denotaram estabilidade cardiorrespiratória e podem ser considerados seguros em felinas submetidas à ovário-histectomia.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to compare cardiorespiratory changes and post-operative analgesia provided by dexmedetomidine or tramadol, associated with midazolam, in female cats. For that purpose, 18 healthy cats were assigned to two randomized groups: GDM, which received dexmedetomidine (10 µg/kg) and GTM, which received tramadol (2 mg/kg), both associated with midazolam (0.2 mg/kg) IM. After 15 minutes, anesthesia was induced with propofol (1.46±0.79 mL) and maintained with isofluorane. Ovariohysterectomy was performed and cardiorespiratory variables were registered 15 minutes after pre-anesthetic medication (M0), 15 minutes after anesthetic induction (M15), and every five minutes until the end of the surgical procedure (M20, M25, M30, M35 e M40). Pain evaluation started 30 minutes after the surgery (MP30) and sequentially at thirty-minute intervals (MP60, MP90, MP120). After MP120, each evaluation was registered at every hour (MP180, MP240 e MP360). Dexmedetomidine-midazolam association results in decreases on initial heart rate (HR) without clinical relevance and it is related to pronounced sedation, poor and less durable antinociception and vomiting events, when compared to tramadol-midazolam association. Both protocols indicate cardiorespiratoy stability and safety in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy.

Avaliaram-se o efeito do ganho compensatório no desempenho produtivo e a eficiência econômica de novilhos submetidos a diferentes estratégias de suplementação alimentar na fase de recria e engorda. Cinquenta e quatro bezerros, com peso médio inicial de 169,6±16,7kg, foram divididos em oito tratamentos, sendo cada tratamento uma estratégia de suplementação alimentar. No período da seca, os animais receberam suplemento proteico-energético-mineral (SP), com ingestão média diária de 0,1 ou 0,2% do peso vivo. No período das águas, os novilhos receberam SP com ingestão média diária de 0,5% do peso vivo ou suplementação mineral (SM). No período de terminação, os animais receberam SP com ingestão média diária de 1,4% do peso vivo ou foram confinados. Os animais que receberam SM não tiveram ganho compensatório. Animais que receberam SP nas águas (0,51±0,07kg/dia) tiveram ganho compensatório em relação ao período anterior e obtiveram ganho adicional diário de 123g quando comparados com SM (0,39±0,07kg/dia), entretanto não obtiveram ganho compensatório na fase de terminação. O efeito do ganho compensatório é muito pequeno ou até mesmo nulo no sistema de recria e engorda precoce com terminação em confinamento. A suplementação com menor ingestão de proteína, energia e mineral durante a primeira seca e águas, pós-desmame, da vida de novilhos pode ser compensada com o uso do confinamento na fase de terminação desses animais com resultados econômicos positivos.

The effect of compensatory growth on performance and economical efficiency of steers on different dietary supplementation strategies in the rearing and fattening stages was evaluated. Fifty-four calves with average initial weight of 169.6±16.7kg were divided into eight treatments, each of them being a strategy of food supplementation. During the dry season the animals received protein - energy - mineral supplement (SP) with an average daily intake of 0.1 or 0.2 % of body weight (BW). During the rainy season the animals received SP with an average daily intake of 0.5 % of body weight or mineral supplementation (SM). In the fattening period, the animals received SP with an average daily intake of 1.4 % of body weight or were placed in feedlot. Animals that received SM had no compensatory gain. Animals that received SP during the rainy season (0,51±0,07kg/day) had compensatory growth when compared to the previous period, and obtained additional daily gain of 123g when compared to SM group (0,39±0,07kg/day), however did not obtain compensatory gain during the fattening phase. The effect of compensatory gain becomes minimal or zero in feedlot finished. Supplementation strategies with protein, energy and mineral intake in the first dried and the first water in steer's life can be compensated with the use of these animals in the feedlot finishing phase with positive economic results.

Avaliou-se o desempenho produtivo e a eficiência econômica de diferentes estratégias de suplementação alimentar na fase de recria e engorda de novilhos Nelore. O experimento foi dividido em três períodos, seca, água e terminação. Cinquenta e quatro bezerros com peso médio inicial de 169,6kg foram divididos em oito tratamentos, sendo cada tratamento uma estratégia de suplementação alimentar. No período da seca, os animais receberam suplemento proteico-energético-mineral com ingestão média diária de 0,1% do peso vivo médio (PV) para os tratamentos A, B, C, D, e 0,2% do PV para os tratamentos E, F, G e H. No período das águas, os novilhos dos tratamentos A, B, E e F receberam suplemento proteico-energético-mineral com ingestão média diária de 0,5% do PV, e os novilhos dos tratamentos C, D, G e H receberam suplementação mineral. No período de terminação, os animais dos tratamentos B, D, F e H receberam suplemento proteico-energético-mineral com ingestão média diária de 1,4% do PV, e os animais dos tratamentos A, C, E e G foram engordados em confinamento. Houve diferença estatística (p<0,05) para o peso final acumulado (PF). Os maiores valores de PF foram de 492,0; 475,1 e 473,1kg para os animais dos tratamentos F, B e H, respectivamente. Os animais dos tratamentos que receberam suplemento 1,4% do PV na terminação permaneceram 70 dias a mais do que os animais que foram engordados em confinamento. Todas os tratamentos foram economicamente viáveis, contudo o tratamento G apresentou o maior resultado de caixa, VPL e TIR, sendo eles R$349,00; R$252,10 e 2,45%, respectivamente. A suplementação de proteína, energia e minerais a pasto ou em confinamento reduziu a idade ao abate dos animais e constitui uma alternativa economicamente viável para produção de bovinos de corte.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the production performance and economic efficiency of different strategies of supplementation on the rearing and fattening of Nelore calves. The experiment was divided in to three periods, Drought, Rainy and Finishing. Fifty four calves with average initial weight of 169.6 kg were divided in eight treatments, each treatment with one supplementation strategy. During the dry season the animals were protein-energy and mineral supplemented with an average daily intake of 0.1% of body weight (BW) for strategies A, B, C, D and 0.2% of BW for strategies E, F, G and H. During the rainy season, animals from strategies A, B, E and F were protein-energy and mineral supplemented with an average daily intake of 0.5% of BW and strategies C, D, G and H received only mineral supplementation. During the finishing period, animals from strategies B, D, F and H were protein-energy and mineral supplemented with an average daily intake of 1.4% of BW and animals from strategies A, C, E and G were fattened in feedlots. There was statistical difference (p<0.05) for the cumulative final weight (FW). Higher values of FW were 492.0, 475.1 and 473.1kg for animals from strategies F, B and H respectively. Animals from strategies supplemented 1.4% of BW remained 70 days more in the termination period than animals fattened in feedlots. All strategies were economically viable, however, strategy G had a major cash result, net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR), R$ 349.00; R$ 252.10 and 2.45% respectively. Protein, energy and mineral supplementation on pasture or feedlot reduces the age at slaughter of animals and is an economically viable alternative for production of beef cattle.

Comparou-se o desempenho de bovinos de diferentes grupos genéticos quanto a algumas características produtivas da desmama até o abate. Os dados são referentes a 827 bovinos machos oriundos do cruzamento de vacas Tabapuã com touros Tabapuã (TAB), Red Angus (REDTAB), Santa Gertrudis (STATAB), e das fêmeas TabapuãxRed Angus com touros Santa Gertrudis (STAREDTAB) (nascidos entre 1999 e 2001 e criados em pastagens de braquiária, no Estado da Bahia). Foram analisados o peso à desmama ajustado aos 205 dias (PD205), o peso ao abate (PA), o ganho médio diário da desmama ao abate (GMD) e a idade ao abate (IA). O grupo contemporâneo (GC), o grupo genético (GG) e a interação entre GC e GG influenciaram as características avaliadas (P<0,05). O REDTAB apresentou superioridade entre os GG para GMD no primeiro ano do GC (1GC), com média de 0,552kg (P<0,05). Os cruzados STATAB e STAREDTAB não apresentaram diferenças significativas para as médias de GMD (P>0,05); entretanto, apresentaram médias inferiores às do grupo REDTAB e TAB. Em condição de ambiente mais favorável, o REDTAB pode ser mais precoce, obtendo maior GMD e PA com menor IA, sendo superior ao Tabapuã e aos cruzados da segunda geração (F2). Os cruzados F2 não demonstraram vantagem em relação ao cruzado F1 e à raça pura.

The aim of this study was to compare the different genetic groups performances from weaning to slaughter. The d ata are referred to 827 male calves of Tabapuã c ows crossed with Red Angus (REDTAB) and Santa Gertrudis sires and from Tabapuã x Red Angus cows crossed with Santa Gertrudis sires , born from 1999 to 2001 and raised in Brachiaria pastures, in Bahia state , Brazil. The w eaning weight was adjusted to 205 day s (WW205), slaughter weight (SW ), average daily gain from weaning to slaughter (ADG) and age slaughter (AG), were analyzed. The contemporary group (CG), genetic group (GG) and the interaction between CG and GG influenced the parameters (P<0.05). The REDTAB showed superiority between GG for ADG in 1CG, with an average of 0.522 kg (P<0.05). The cro s sbreed STATAB and STAREDTAB weren 't different to ADG (P>0.05), however, ha d lower averages than REDTAB and TAB. In more favorable environment al conditions, REDTAB s hould get higher ADG and SW and lower AG , being superior than Tabapuã and to the second generation's crossbr ed (F2). The crossbr ed F2 show ed no advantage over F1crossbr ed and straightbred.

Avaliaram-se as ventilações mecânica controlada a volume e espontânea, por meio das variáveis hemogasométricas, cardiovasculares e ventilométricas. Distribuíram-se 28 coelhos nos grupos: GIVC (isofluorano e ventilação controlada a volume), GIVE (isofluorano e ventilação espontânea), GSVC (sevofluorano e ventilação controlada a volume) e GSVE (sevofluorano e ventilação espontânea). Induziu-se por máscara, com isofluorano (GIVE e GIVC) ou sevofluorano (GSVE e GSVC) a 1,5 CAM, em oxigênio a 100%. Para manutenção anestésica, reajustou-se para 1 CAM. No GIVC e no GSVC, administrou-se rocurônio, na dose de 0,6mg/kg, seguida de infusão contínua na mesma dose de 0,6mg/kg/h. No GIVE e no GSVE, foi administrado NaCl 0,9% em vez de rocurônio. Iniciou-se a ventilação controlada ajustando-a de maneira a obter capnometria entre 35 e 45mmHg. Mensuraram-se os parâmetros 60 minutos após a indução anestésica (M0), 15 minutos após o bolus de rocurônio ou NaCl 0,9% (M15) e a cada 15 minutos (M30, M45 e M60). Evidenciou-se hipercapnia e acidose em GIVC, GSVC e GSVE. Concluiu-se que a ventilação mecânica controlada a volume não foi capaz de manter a normocapnia em coelhos, gerando acidose, principalmente quando se utilizou sevofluorano. O uso do isofluorano demonstrou maior estabilidade anestésica que o sevofluorano nesta.

The volume-controlled mechanical ventilation and spontaneous ventilation, through haemogasometric, cardiovascular and spirometry variables were evaluated. Twenty-eight rabbits were distributed into two groups: GIVC (isoflurane and volume-controlled ventilation), GIVE (isoflurane and spontaneous ventilation), GSVC (sevoflurane and volume-controlled ventilation) and GSVE (sevoflurane and spontaneous ventilation). Induction was performed by mask with isoflurane (GIVE and GIVC) or sevoflurane (GSVE and GSVC) at 1.5 MAC in 100% oxygen. To maintain anesthesia, MAC was reset to 1. In GIVC and GSVC groups, rocuronium was administered at a dose of 0.6 mg/kg followed by its continuous infusion (0.6 mg/kg/h). In GSVE and GIVE, 0.9% NaCl was administered instead of rocuronium. Controlled ventilation was started by adjusting the capnometry in order to obtain values between 35 and 45 mmHg. Parameters were measured 60 minutes after induction of anesthesia (M0), 15 minutes after the bolus of rocuronium or 0.9% NaCl (M15) and every fifteen minutes (M30, M45 and M60). Hypercapnia and acidosis was evident in GIVC, GSVC and GSVE. We concluded that the volume-controlled mechanical ventilation was not able to maintain normocapnia in rabbits, producing acidosis in them, especially when using sevoflurane. The use of isoflurane showed greater stability than the sevoflurane anesthetic in the species studied.

O presente trabalho faz uma revisão de plantas nativas do continente americano com atividade anti-helmíntica com a finalidade de subsidiar pesquisas e o desenvolvimento de novos medicamentos na área de produtos naturais. Na literatura, foram citadas 22 famílias de plantas, tais como: Moraceae, Asteraceae e Cucurbitaceae, e estudadas cerca de 35 espécies, como a Ficus sp, Cucurbita máxima, e Ruta graveolens, usadas por sua alegada atividade anti-helmíntica. Destas espécies, 26 foram ativas contra alguns helmintos: Strongyloides stercolaris, Ancylostomidae, Trichostrongylus sp, Capillaria sp, Ascaris lumbricoides, Taenia saginata, Haemonchus contortus, e Hymenolepsis diminuta. Foi verificado maior número de estudos com parasitas de animais, possivelmente devido ao desenvolvimento de resistência dos helmintos aos tratamentos convencionais disponíveis.

This paper is a review of native American plants showing anthelmintic activity in order to give support to research and development of new drugs in the field of natural products. In the literature, 22 plant families were cited, such as: Moraceae, Asteraceae and Cucurbitaceae, and around 35 species were studied, including Ficus sp, Cucurbita maxima and Ruta graveolens, used for their putative anthelmintic activity. From these species, 26 were active against some helminthes: Strongyloides stercolaris, Ancylostomidae, Trichostrongylus sp, Capillaria sp, Ascaris lumbricoides, Taenia saginata, Haemonchus contortus and Hymenolepsis diminuta. Data indicated a larger number of studies with animal parasites, probably due to the resistance of these helminthes to the conventional treatments available.

Os efeitos cardiovasculares de vasicina, um alcalóide isolado das folhas de Sida cordifolia L., foi avaliado neste trabalho. Em ratos não-anestesiados (n=6), vasicina (1, 2.5, 5 e 10 mg/kg; i.v., aleatoriamente) induziu hipotensão associada com uma intensa bradicardia. Ambas as respostas buscaram completamente abolidas após atropina (2 mg/Kg; i.v.) e atenuadas após hexamethonio (20 mg/Kg; i.v.). Em anéis de artéria mesentérica de rato isolada, vasicina (0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1, 3, 10, 30, 100 e 300 g/mL, cumulativamente) induziu relaxamento concentração-dependente de tônus promovido por fenilefrina (IC50= 3.8 0.9 g/mL; n= 6). Em conclusão, os resultados mostram que vasicina produz hipotensão e bradicardia que parecem ser devidas à excitação de receptores muscarínicos cardíacos (direta e/ou indiretamente) e por uma diminuição das resistências periféricas.

The cardiovascular effects of vasicine, an alkaloid isolated from the leaves of Sida cordifolia L., were evaluated in this work. In non-anaesthetized rats (n=6), vasicine (1, 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg; i.v., randomly) induced hypotension associated with an intense bradycardia. Both responses were completely abolished after atropine (2mg/Kg; i.v.) and attenuated after hexamethonium (20 mg/Kg; i.v.). In isolated rat mesenteric artery rings, vasicine (0.03, 0.1, 0.3, 1, 3, 10, 30, 100 and 300 μg/mL, cumulatively) induced concentration-dependent relaxation of phenylephrine-induced tone (IC50= 3.8±0.9 μg/mL; n = 6). In conclusion, the results show that vasicine produce hypotension and bradycardia which appears to be due to the stimulation of cardiac muscarinic receptors (directly and/or indirectly), and by a decrease of the peripheral resistances.

This work proposes the application of the thermogravimetry (TG) in the control of quality of Cissampelos sympodialis, known popularly as 'milona'. After the extraction process, the alkaloids became the majority substances and the extracts showed the kinetic behavior of the bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids. This seems to be an important and useful parameter for the quality control of the 'milona' extracts.

The genus Hornschuchia obliqua belonging to the Annonaceae family. The family comprising ca 130 genera and 2300 species, located in the Magnoliales, a primitive order of plants, is known to produce isoquinoline alkaloids derivatives1. Indeed the great majority of alkaloidal constituents of these plants are isoquinoline-derived structures, along with a wide range of non-alkaloidal compounds of varied stuctural types2,3. The present paper describes the chemical investigation of the alkaloids from Hornschuchia obliqua, isolated until now.

Uma investigação fitoquímica das vagens de Prosopis juliflora cultivada na região semi-árida do Estado da Paraíba e monitorada através de testes farmacológicos levou ao isolamento, purificação e identificação do alcalóide principal juliprosopina. A presença de outros constituintes químicos em mistura, tais como juliprosina e juliprosineno, foi verificada na fração dos alcalóides totais através de uma análise do espectro de RMN de 13C. Este trabalho sugere que a toxicidade, observada em animais de laboratório, está quimicamente relacionada com os alcalóides piperidínicos presentes nas vagens desta leguminosa.

A phytochemical investigation of the pods of Prosopis juliflora cultivated in the semi arid region of the State of Paraiba, monitored by pharmacological tests, led to the isolation, purification and identification of its main alkaloid - juliprosopine. The presence of other compounds such as juliprosine and juliprosinene, was observed through analysis of 13C NMR. This work suggests that the toxic activity, observed in laboratory animals, is chemicaly related with the piperidine alkaloids present in the pods of this Leguminosae.
