Abstract Cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum)-based agroforestry system (AFS) can be used for restoration of vegetation around springs and riparian forests of water sources (rivers, streams, lakes etc.), subject to constant flooding. The objectives of this work were to study the relations between morphophysiological traits when flooding occurs, determining the most important to assess genotypes’ tolerance, and evaluate the ability of cupuassu genotypes to express alternative phenotypes and grow efficiently, in order to select materials capable of sustaining hypoxic conditions. The trial was carried out in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design with a 16 x 2 (16 progenies and two water regimes) factorial scheme and four replications. Treatments started six months after the seedlings were transplanted. 15 traits related to vegetative development, biomass accumulation and physiology were measured for the experimental evaluation. Correlations and principal components were estimated to study the traits’ interrelationships and identify the most important to assist progeny selection. The results revealed that, among the evaluated traits, ten were sufficient to explain the variability within the population and four were elected as the most relevant to select the best progenies. 75% of the genotypes showed tolerance to partial flooding and based on performance and plasticity, we selected G174, G48 and G56 for a broader spectrum and G44, G47 and G51 for hypoxic conditions only. The promising evidence pointed out here will need to be corroborated with field tests, so that the cupuassu tree can be recommended in the recovery of environments subject to hypoxia.

Abstract Aim: To evaluate the chronic effects of resistance training on resting blood pressure, handgrip strength, gait speed, and Timed Up and Go test (TUG) in normotensive and hypertensive elderly individuals. Methods: Experimental study based on TREND. Hypertensive patients were diagnosed by an independent doctor. Before and after 12 weeks of progressive resistance training, we evaluated blood pressure, heart rate, body composition, Timed Up and Go test, gait speed, and handgrip strength. Results: Sample consisted of 41 participants divided into two groups (normotensive n = 28; hypertensive n = 13). We observed significant values in the reduction of blood pressure levels only in the group of hypertensive participants. In functionality outcomes, we observed significant values in all tests and both groups. Outcomes contemplate effect sizes ranging from small to moderate. Conclusion: Progressive resistance training lowers resting blood pressure levels, increases handgrip strength, and improves physical functional performance. Although the normotensive group did not show a reduction in blood pressure levels, an improvement was observed in the functional physical tests.

BACKGROUND Healthcare-associated infections due to multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa are significant public health issues worldwide. A system biology approach can help understand bacterial behaviour and provide novel ways to identify potential therapeutic targets and develop new drugs. Gene regulatory networks (GRN) are examples of in silico representation of interaction between regulatory genes and their targets. OBJECTIVES In this work, we update the MDR P. aeruginosa CCBH4851 GRN reconstruction and analyse and discuss its structural properties. METHODS We based this study on the gene orthology inference methodology using the reciprocal best hit method. The P. aeruginosa CCBH4851 genome and GRN, published in 2019, and the P. aeruginosa PAO1 GRN, published in 2020, were used for this update reconstruction process. FINDINGS Our result is a GRN with a greater number of regulatory genes, target genes, and interactions compared to the previous networks, and its structural properties are consistent with the complexity of biological networks and the biological features of P. aeruginosa. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Here, we present the largest and most complete version of P. aeruginosa GRN published to this date, to the best of our knowledge.

ABSTRACT Knowledge Management is a field of research that seeks to articulate the intricate relationship between the various organizational dimensions that influence in favor of knowledge. Measurement, as a dimension of this management, proposes to measure the level or capacity of knowledge management in organizational locus. However, the instruments for this purpose are expressed without an apparent psychometric assessment, as well as they do not articulate the holistic perspective, embodied by the totality of the critical dimensions for the success of this management. In the meantime, this research aims to build and validate an instrument for assessing holistic Knowledge Management. So, this is descriptive research with a quantitative approach, which makes use of the perception of four expert judges concerning the aspects of clarity, coherence, and pertinence of the statements of the constructed instrument. These aspects were analyzed using the Content Validation Coefficient method and must be equal to or greater than 0.70 to certify the quality of the questionnaire. The results express that the total coefficients, composed of all instrument items, are 0.87, 0.94, and 0.95 for each aspect, respectively, attesting to the quality of that instrument. Thus, this questionnaire can be applied for purposes of organizational diagnosis, which is an opportunity for future research.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Abstract Brazilian cities have been growing in a disorderly manner and undergoing a disturbed anthropogenic process, which severely transforms the local atmosphere, influencing the quality of life of society. The purpose of this research is to analyze the temperature variation through the use of remote sensing, seeking to identify heat and freshness islands, their origins and the space-behavioral variation, having as study area the Municipality of São Paulo, a large city with population density of 7,398.26 inhabitants/km2 and more than 12,000,000 inhabitants. We opted to use Landsat 5 satellite images and SEBAL algorithm methodology for surface temperature calculation. The results show that the surface temperature variation has been increasing over the years, the city of São Paulo, the presence of large industrial zones, the disordered urban growth, the presence of soil sealing through asphalt coating, are some of the factors that contribute to the emergence of heat islands. It was also evidenced the presence of freshness zones, most of them in wooded areas, which contributes to reducing the temperature and improving the living conditions of the population.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Although the 2019 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) pandemic poses new challenges to the healthcare system to provide support for thousands of patients, there is special concern about common medical emergencies, such as stroke, that will continue to occur and will require adequate treatment. The allocation of both material and human resources to fight the pandemic cannot overshadow the care for acute stroke, a time-sensitive emergency that with an inefficient treatment will further increase mortality and long-term disability. Objective: This paper summarizes the recommendations from the Scientific Department on Cerebrovascular Diseases of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology, the Brazilian Society of Cerebrovascular Diseases and the Brazilian Society of Neuroradiology for management of acute stroke and urgent neuro-interventional procedures during the COVID-19 pandemic, including proper use of screening tools, personal protective equipment (for patients and health professionals), and patient allocation.

Event tourism is definitely consolidated as one of the ramifications of tourism that most contributes to the economic development of the localities where it is held. In Brazil, the practice of mega events boosts the segment and leverages the local services sector. However, to meet the expectations of its organizers, some processes need to be introduced properly. The value chain appears as an indispensable tool in their achievement. This paper aims to analyze the Business, Agriculture and Livestock Fair of the Western Border - Fenaoeste, held in the municipality of São Borja, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, taking as a basis the Porterian value chain with an adaptation of its primary and support activities with the services lenses. This case study uses a qualitative and exploratory methodology. Based on interviews with experts and on the specific literature, it presents strategic points and issues for the competiveness of mega events, where the aspects related to the information technology used and the involvement of internal and external customers have intense influence. For the improvement of activities in the search for competitive advantage, it suggests a more intensive use of information technology, especially in the post-event phase, where there is a greater need for human interaction with customers, who are co-producers to obtain knowledge about these stakeholders. To this end, it is necessary to coordinate the aspects of intangibility, perishability, and simultaneity with attention to issues such as training, disclosure of the event, recruitment risks, management systems, and outsourcing of employees (with caution in relation to the strategic ones) to promote key products of the events: service quality, customer experience, and show. The university can assist in this development. Although this research is not of conclusive nature, some relevant reflections on the value chain of mega events are presented along with proposals for future research.

ABSTRACT. Cotton producers worldwide suffer with the losses caused by the presence of phytonematodes. The aim of the present study was to investigate the inheritance of resistance to Meloidogyne incognita race 3 in Gossypium hirsutum variety punctatum accession TX 25. Accessions of Gossypium sp. were obtained from the germplasm bank of Embrapa Cotton. Two experiments were performed in two consecutive years. In the first experiment, a susceptible parental line, FiberMax 966, a resistant parental line, TX 25, and their F1, F2 and backcross generations were tested. In the second experiment, parental lines FiberMax 966 and TX 25, their F2 generation, and genotypes M315 (resistant), LA887 and DeltaOpal (moderately resistant) were tested. In both experiments, plants were inoculated with 2000 eggs and J2 of M. incognita race 3. The gall index, egg mass index and reproduction factor were evaluated 120 days following inoculation. In the first experiment, plants from the F1 and backcross generations were susceptible. Plants from the F2 generation presented a 3:1 resistant-to-susceptible ratio in the two experiments, indicating oligogenic resistance.

Considering that the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne exigua has caused great yield losses to coffee production in Brazil, this study aimed to determine whether the penetration and the reproduction events of this nematode on the roots of plants from two coffee cultivars with different levels of basal resistance to this nematode could be affected by silicon (Si). Coffee plants from the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59, which are susceptible and resistant, respectively, to M. exigua, were grown in pots containing Si-deficient soil that was amended with either calcium silicate (+Si) or calcium carbonate (–Si). The Si concentration on the root tissue significantly increased by 159 and 97% for the +Si plants from the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59, respectively, compared to the –Si plants of these cultivars. The population of M. exigua, the number of galls and the number of eggs were significantly reduced on the roots of the +Si plants of the cultivars Catuaí and IAPAR 59 compared to the –Si plants of these cultivars. It was concluded that the development and reproduction events of M. exigua were negatively impacted on the roots of coffee plants supplied with Si.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

INTRODUCTION:The need for studies that describe the resistance patterns in populations of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) in function of their region of origin justified this research, which aimed to characterize the resistance to temephos and to obtain information on esterase activity in populations of Aedes aegypticollected in municipalities of the State of Paraíba.METHODS:Resistance to temephos was evaluated and characterized from the diagnostic dose of 0.352mg i.a./L and multiple concentrations that caused mortalities between 5% and 99%. Electrophoresis of isoenzymes was used to verify the patterns of esterase activity among populations of the vector.RESULTS:All populations of Aedes aegypti were resistant to temephos, presenting a resistance rate (RR) greater than 20. The greatest lethal dose 50% of the sample (CL50) was found for the municipality of Lagoa Seca, approximately forty-one times the value of CL50 for the Rockefeller population. The populations characterized as resistant showed two to six regions of α and β-esterase, called EST-1 to EST-6, while the susceptible population was only seen in one region of activity.CONCLUSIONS:Aedes aegyptiis widely distributed and shows a high degree of resistance to temephos in all municipalities studied. In all cases, esterases are involved in the metabolism and, consequently, in the resistance to temephos.

The objective of this study was to describe the spatial distribution of schistosomiasis in horticultural community of Natuba, district of Vitória de Santo Antão, Pernambuco state. It was conducted a parasitological survey, examined the fecal material of 310 community residents. The cases positive for Schistosoma mansoni were geocoded and included in the computerized template of the community, generating maps of spatial distribution with kernel estimators. The results showed a high prevalence of schistosomiasis, with 28.4% of the parasites. Other parasites were found in 25.8% of the population. The use of GIS tools to map and understand the possible distribution of cases of schistosomiasis in the space occupied by the community highlighting and listing locations of lower elevation (able to flooding), with a higher frequency of human cases. Studies like this provide information to the local health services, may intervene and bring about change for individuals living in areas with low housing conditions to minimize their exposure to risk of contracting schistosomiasis.
