RESUMO Embora a região semiárida do Nordeste brasileiro seja uma grande produtora de maracujá amarelo, os problemas de sais no solo e nas fontes hídricas, em muitas áreas, têm limitado o crescimento e a produção dessa cultura, o que realça a importância de estudos visando a reduzir tais efeitos. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se com este estudo, avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de piruvato, como mitigador do estresse salino, sobre a morfofisiologia do maracujazeiro cv. Redondo Amarelo, em fase de mudas. Os tratamentos constaram de três condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação (CEa: 0,8, 2,4 e 4,0 dS m-1) e três concentrações de piruvato (0, 25 e 50 mM), distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 3 × 3, com quatro repetições e duas plantas por parcela. A irrigação com águas de CEa de 4,0 dS m-1 reduz as variáveis de crescimento, fitomassa, indice de qualidade de Dickson e aumenta o extravasamento de eletrólitos em mudas de maracujazeiro cv. Redondo Amarelo. A aplicação exógena de piruvato de cálcio (25 e 50 mM) favorece as variáveis de crescimento, fitomassa, indice de qualidade de Dickson, teor relativo de água, suculência foliar e reduz o extravasamento de eletrólitos no limbo foliar do maracujá. A aplicação exógena de piruvato atenua o estresse salino, com efeitos benéficos na taxa de assimilação de CO2, transpiração, eficiência da carboxilação instantânea, eficiência intrínseca do uso da água e massa seca das raízes.

ABSTRACT Although the semi-arid region of Northeast Brazil is a major producer of yellow passion fruit, the problems of salts in the soil and water sources, in many areas have limited the growth and production of this crop, which highlights the importance of studies aimed at reducing such effects. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of pyruvate, as a mitigator of salt stress, on the morphophysiology of yellow passion fruit, in seedling phase. The treatments consisted of three electrical conductivities of irrigation water (ECw: 0.8, 2.4, and 4.0 dS m-1) and three concentrations of pyruvate (0, 25, and 50 mM), distributed in a randomized block experimental design in a 3 × 3 factorial scheme, with four replications and two plants per plot. Irrigation with ECw of 4.0 dS m-1 reduces growth variables, phytomass, Dickson quality index, and increases electrolyte leakage in passion fruit seedlings cv. Redondo Amarelo. Exogenous application of calcium pyruvate (25 and 50 mM) increased growth, phytomass, Dickson quality index, relative water content and leaf succulence and reduced electrolyte leakage in the leaf blade in passion fruit. Exogenous application of pyruvate attenuates salt stress, with beneficial effects on CO2 assimilation rate, transpiration, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, intrinsic water use efficiency, and root dry mass.

The antifungal potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by actinobacterial strains Streptomyces sp. (ACTB-77) and Amycolatopsis sp. (ACTB-290) from the rhizosphere of Caatinga plants against Colletotrichum musae was investigated. VOCs produced by these microorganisms (axenic and co-culture) were investigated using headspace-solid phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Although no exclusive VOC peaks were observed in the co-culture with ACTB-77, the same experiment involving ACTB-290 yielded five new peaks, including two identified alcohols, suggested as bioreductive products of the corresponding ketones by the fungus. Statistical analysis revealed that co-culture ACTB-77/C. musae has a closer similarity to the fungus than to the actinobacteria, while the co culture ACTB-290/C. musae showed closer similarity to the actinobacteria. These confirmed the more pronounced antifungal activity of the ACTB-290 strain, as observed in the fungus growth inhibition experiments. The antifungal activity of ACTB-290 was associated to its sulfur-containing metabolites, while linalool was suggested as responsible for the ACTB-77 activity.

RESUMO Breve panorama dos atropelamentos de fauna na Estrada Parque Serra da Macaca (SP-139), estado de São Paulo, Brasil. As fatalidades de animais silvestres nas rodovias, decorrentes de colisões com veículos automotores, constitui grave ameaça à conservação de diversas espécies de vertebrados terrestres em todo o mundo. Entretanto, além do impacto negativo causado pelos atropelamentos, existem também implicações socioeconômicas muito sérias advindas desse tipo de conflito. O presente estudo teve como objetivo qualificar e quantificar os atropelamentos de fauna ocorridos na Estrada Parque Serra da Macaca (SP-139), desde a conclusão das suas obras de revitalização - no ano de 2015 - em um trecho de 33 km que atravessa o Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho (PECB), assim como delimitar localmente os principais fatores predisponentes. As análises ecológicas foram geradas pela combinação dos registros catalogados pelo serviço de fiscalização da Fundação Florestal com as amostras coletadas em campo. Na contagem total, detectou-se a perda de 80 indivíduos pertencentes a 27 espécies, em um período aproximado de três anos. O grupo dos répteis foi o mais afetado, seguido pelos mamíferos. Uma parte significativa dos animais não pôde ser reconhecida ao nível de espécie, visto que a identificação foi realizada com base na morfologia dos caracteres externos e muitas das carcaças estavam dilaceradas. Constatou-se que as variações temporais das fatalidades estão ligadas principalmente à intensidade de tráfego na via, e à resposta diferencial da herpetofauna aos estímulos da sazonalidade.

ABSTRACT Fatalities involving wildlife on roads and highways due to collisions with automotive vehicles represent a severe threat to the conservation of several species of terrestrial vertebrates throughout the world. However, in addition to the negative impact caused by collisions, there are also serious social and economic implications that arise from this situation. This study aims at qualifying and quantifying the collisions with fauna in the Serra da Macaca Park Road (SP-139), since the end of the revitalization work that the road was underwent - in 2015 - over a stretch of 33 km that crosses the Parque Estadual Carlos Botelho (PECB), as well as identifying the predisposing factors that lead to such accidents. The ecological analyses were generated by a combination of the records kept by the fiscalization service of the Fundação Florestal and samples collected in the field. In total, the loss of 80 individuals belonging to 27 species was recorded over an estimated period of three years. Reptiles were the most affected group, followed by mammals. A significant part of the animals was unable to be recognized to the species level, since the taxonomic identification was conducted based on the morphology of the external characteristics and several of the carcasses were completely dilacerated. We identified that the temporal variations in the fatalities are related mainly to the intensity of the traffic in the road and to the differential response of herpetofauna to the stimuli of seasonality.

ABSTRACT This research aimed to evaluate the effect of the number of fatigue cycles (NC, 0 – reference, 450, 4500, 45000, and 90000) for frequencies (Fr) of oscillation equal to 0.5 and 1.0 Hz on the modulus of elasticity (Em) and operating stress (σm) in the static bending of Pinus caribaea wood. Em and σm were determined taking into account three specimens (SPEC) manufactured for reference condition and another three for each of the four NC levels and each Fr level, resulting in 27 SPEC. Sixty experimental determinations were obtained, being the approximate total time of sample exposure to fatigue of 350 hours. The same specimens used to determine Em and σm for the reference condition were also used (via non-destructive tests) to obtain these properties for all fatigue cycles. The frequency and number of cycles significantly influenced both investigated properties. Reductions in Em and σm values were observed after 45000 cycles. The progressive increase in the number of fatigue cycles caused more marked reductions in mechanical properties when compared to the increase in the frequency of oscillation.

RESUMO: Os objetivos do presente estudo foram verificar se as temperaturas corpóreas e locais se alteram após exercício de alta intensidade e curta duração (prova de laço em dupla) e se treinamentos distintos podem influenciar nestas alterações. Foram utilizados 12 animais, machos e fêmeas, com idade entre 3 e 6 anos e peso médio de 450kg. Os animais foram divididos em dois grupos: treino regular (GTR) e treino esporádico (GTE). As aferições da temperatura por meio de termografia infravermelha foram feitas por uma câmera termal específica. As medições das temperaturas das regiões ocular, toracolombar, tendíneas distais (membros torácicos e pélvicos) e garupa foram realizadas 30 minutos antes, imediatamente depois, uma, duas, seis e 24 horas após a simulação de competição. No GTR houve aumento de temperatura ocular duas horas após o exercício, retornando ao basal apenas 24 horas depois. No GTE o aumento ocorreu imediatamente após o exercício e retornando ao basal duas horas depois. As temperaturas da região dos tendões dos membros pélvicos e garupa (lado direito) elevaram-se imediatamente após o exercício e não retornaram ao basal após 24 horas. O exercício de laço em dupla aumentou as temperaturas superficiais nas regiões distolateral de membros torácicos e pélvicos, garupa e região toracolombar de ambos os grupos e da temperatura ocular do GTE. A frequência de treinamento influenciou o perfil de temperatura superficial na região distal de membros pélvicos, garupa e toracolombar.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to verify whether the body and local temperatures change after high-intensity, short-duration exercise (team roping) and whether different pieces of training influence these changes. To this end, twelve animals, males and females, aged 3-6 years, with an average weight of 450 kg, were used. The horses were divided into two groups: regular training (RTG) and sporadic training (STG). The surface temperatures were assessed using a specific thermal camera. Temperatures of the ocular, thoracolumbar, distal tendon (thoracic and pelvic limbs) and croup regions were measured 30 min before, immediately after, and one, two, six and 24 hours after competition simulation. In the RTG, there was an increase in surface eye temperature two hours after exercise, returning to baseline level 24 hours later. In the STG, increase in eye temperature occurred immediately after exercise and returned to baseline level two hours later. Temperature of the pelvic limb tendons and croup (right side) rose immediately after exercise and did not return to baseline level 24 hours later. Team roping exercise increased the surface temperature of the distolateral thoracic and pelvic limb, croup and thoracolumbar regions in both groups and the eye temperature in the STG. Training frequency influenced the surface temperature profile in the distolateral pelvic limb, croup and thoracolumbar regions.

RESUMO: O ligamento cruzado cranial é o principal responsável pela estabilidade do joelho, impedindo o deslocamento da tíbia cranial em relação ao fêmur. A deficiência neste ligamento (CCLD) pode causar subluxação da tíbia e disfunção do membro pélvico devido à sobrecarga. As osteotomias tibiais estão entre as técnicas cirúrgicas mais atuais para o tratamento de CCLD em cães e proporcionam a estabilidade dinâmica por meio da modificação da geometria óssea da distribuição das forças que atuam sobre a articulação. O objetivo desse estudo é descrever o uso do enxerto ósseo cortical alogênico conservado em glicerina como espaçador no avanço da tuberosidade tibial (TTA) para o tratamento do CCLD. Para isso, 34 cães submetidos à cirurgia de TTA foram avaliados, sendo 23 machos (67,35%) e 11 fêmeas (32,35%). Os procedimentos curúrgicos aconteceram entre maio de 2011 e outubro de 2015. Com relação ao procedimento cirúrgico após a osteotomia da tuberosidade tibial, um disco alogênico cortical, em forma de cunha serrada, conservado em glicerina com proporções de 2 x 1mm foi aplicado como espaçador possibilitando a TTA. Avanços de 3 a 12mm foram executados, dependendo da necessidade do paciente. Para animais com luxação da patela, realizou-se a trocleoplastia e a TTA para a correção do desvio. A idade média dos animais foi de 6,67±3,58 anos e pesos médios de 15,16±12,97kg. Cães sem raça definida, Poodles e Yorkshire Terriers foram os mais afetados. Dos 36 joelhos avaliados, 11 (30,56%) foram associados a algum processo traumático e em 25 (69,44%) não havia nenhuma relação com um trauma prévio. Dos ferimentos, 20 (55,56%) aconteceram no membro direito e 16 (44,44%) no esquerdo, sendo que dois animais apresentavam CCLD bilateralmente. Os animais tiveram suporte contínuo, discreto movimento de gaveta e compressão tibial negativa 15 dias após a cirurgia. Aos 30 dias, 26 casos tinham suporte firme (FS); aos 45 dias, 24 casos tinham FS e oito casos sem claudicação (WC). Durante avaliações radiográficas subsequentes, observou-se a incorporação progressiva da união do enxerto e da osteotomia. Neste estudo, a maior parte do CCLD diagnosticado ocorreu em machos, divergindo dos resultados obtidos por outros autores que encontraram maior frequência em fêmeas. Suporte sem claudicação foi observado na maioria dos casos de implantes aos 60 dias. Foi concluído que o enxerto ósseo cortical alogênico conservado foi capaz de promover a união óssea na TTA de cães com CCLD. Nenhum dos animais apresentou sinais de contaminação, infecção da ferida cirúrgica ou rejeição relacionada à presença do enxerto, demonstrada pela incorporação completa do enxerto ósseo observada precocemente aos 45 dias em alguns animais. A glicerina foi um bom meio de conservação para os fragmentos destinados à enxertia porque, além do menor custo, manteve os fragmentos ósseos livres de contaminação, reduzindo a antigenicidade e preservando as funções de osteoindução e osteocondução. A possibilidade de moldagem do enxerto à necessidade do animal é uma característica favorável à execução da técnica modificada que pode ser moldada de acordo com o tamanho do animal, possibilitando perfeita adaptação ao local osteotomizado em diferentes raças. Intercorrências comumente observadas na TTA com luxação patelar, lesões meniscais, fratura da crista tibial e deslocamento não foram encontradas nos animais deste estudo, provavelmente devido à melhor distribuição de forças entre a passagem do parafuso no TT e a placa do TTA, confirmando que tem boa adaptação à técnica conferindo às vantagens da TTA modificada em relação à TTA convencional.

ABSTRACT: Cranial cruciate ligament is the main responsible for knee stability by preventing cranial tibial displacement regarding the femur. Deficiency in this ligament (CCLD) may cause subluxation of the tibia and dysfunction of the pelvic member due to overloading. Tibial osteotomies are among the more current surgical techniques for treating CCLD in dogs and they proportionate the dynamic stability by means of modifying bone geometry and the distribution of forces acting on the articulation. The objective of this work is to describe the use of the allogeneic cortical bone graft conserved in glycerin as a spacer on the tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) for treating the CCLD. In order to do that, 34 dogs submitted to TTA surgery correction were evaluated, being 23 males (67.35%) and 11 females (32.35%). Surgical procedures happened from May 2011 to October 2015. Regarding the surgical procedure after osteotomy of the tibial tuberosity, a disk of allogeneic cortical disk, sawn wedge-hapsed, conserved in glycerin, proportions of 2x1mm was applied as spacer, enabling TTA. Advancements from 3 to 12 mm were executed, depending on the need of the patient. For animals with patella dislocation, trochleoplasty and TTA were executed in order to correct the deviation. The mean ± SD age of animals was 6.67±3.58 and weight was 15.16±12.97 kg. Mongrel dogs, Poodles and Yorkshire terriers were the most affected ones. From the 36 evaluated knees, 11 (30.56%) were associated with some traumatic process and in 25 (69.44%) there was no relation with previous trauma. From those wounds, 20 (55.56%) happened in the right limb and 16 (44.44%) in the left limb and two animals had CCLD bilaterally. Animals had continuous support, discreet drawer movement and negative tibial compression 15 days after surgery. At 30 days, 26 cases (72.22%) had firm support (FS); at 45 days, 24 cases (66 test at 7 and 67%) had FS and eight cases (22.22%) without claudication (WC). During subsequent radiographic evaluations the progressive incorporation of the graft and osteotomy union were observed. In this study, most of the diagnosed CCLD occurred in males diverging from results obtained by other authors that found greater frequency in females. Support without claudication it was observed in most of the cases of implants at 60 days. We concluded that the conserved allogeneic cortical bone graft was able to promote bone union in TTA of dogs with CCLD. None of the animals had signs of contamination, infection of the surgical wound or rejection related with the presence of the graft, demonstrated by the complete graft-bone incorporation observed early at 45 days in some animals. The glycerin was a good conservation medium for those fragments intended for grafting because, besides being of low cost, it kept bone fragments free of contamination, reducing antigenicity and preserving the functions of osteoinduction and osteoconduction. The possibility of molding the graft to the animal need is a characteristic favorable to executing the modified technique that could be molded according to the size of the animal, allowing perfect adaptation to the osteotomized local in different breeds. Intercurrences commonly observed in TTA with patellar dislocation, meniscal lesions, tibial crest fracture and displacement were not found in the animals of this study, probably due to the better distribution of forces between the pass screw in TT and the TTA plate confirming that it has good adaptation to the technique conferring to the modified TTA advantages regarding the conventional TTA.

Resumo: Paisagens antropicamente modificadas (HMLs) são compostas por fragmentos florestais pequenos, isolados e defaunados, imersos em áreas agrícolas e/ou urbanas. Informações sobre as espécies que habitam essas paisagens são importantes para o direcionamento de estratégias de conservação em escalas local e regional. Uma vez que as HMLs são as paisagens dominantes na Mata Atlântica, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade de mamíferos em uma HML do sudeste do Brasil e propor estratégias para sua conservação. Foram coletados dados de mamíferos terrestres (pequenos, médios e grandes) e voadores em três fragmentos florestais (10, 14 e 26 ha) e áreas adjacentes, entre 2003 e 2016, usando métodos complementares: busca ativa, armadilhamento fotográfico, armadilhas de captura e redes de neblina. Adicionalmente, foram utilizados dados de literatura para complementar a lista de espécies. Foram registradas 35 espécies de mamíferos nativos (6 de pequenos, 16 de médios e grandes e 13 de morcegos) e sete espécies exóticas. A assembleia de mamíferos registrada (terrestres e voadores), embora composta por espécies generalistas, apresentou três espécies de médio e grande porte ameaçadas de extinção nacionalmente (Leopardus guttulus, Puma concolor and Puma yagouaroundi) e duas deficientes em dados (Galictis cuja and Histiotus velatus), destacando a importância dessa HML para conservação e manutenção das populações de mamíferos. Embora inserida em uma paisagem extremamente modificada, a área de estudo abriga uma riqueza significativa de mamíferos de médio e grande porte, sendo um importante refúgio para a biodiversidade na região. Entretanto, essa biodiversidade está ameaçada pela baixa qualidade dos habitats, por atropelamentos e por abundantes populações de cães e gatos domésticos. Portanto, enfatizamos a necessidade de estratégias de conservação focadas nos mamíferos de médio e grande porte como grupo "guarda-chuva", o que pode beneficiar as demais espécies na paisagem. Recomendamos ações de conservação visando a restauração biológica, para melhorar a composição estrutural e conectividade dos fragmentos florestais, reduzir o número de atropelamentos e controlar as populações de cães e gatos domésticos, afim de manter e aumentar a diversidade local de mamíferos em longo prazo.

Abstract: Human-modified landscapes (HMLs) are composed by small, isolated and defaunated forest fragments, which are surrounded by agricultural and urban areas. Information on species that thrives in these HMLs is essential to direct conservation strategies in local and regional scales. Since HMLs are dominant in the Atlantic Forest, we aimed to assess the mammalian diversity in a HML in southeastern Brazil and to propose conservation strategies. We collected data of terrestrial (small-, medium- and large-sized) and volant mammals in three small forest fragments (10, 14 and 26 ha) and adjacent areas, between 2003 and 2016, using complementary methods: active search, camera trapping, live-traps, mist nets and occasional records (i.e., roadkills). In addition, we used secondary data to complement our species list. We recorded 35 native mammal species (6 small-sized, 16 medium- and large-sized, and 13 bats) and seven exotic species in the HML. The recorded mammal assemblage (non-volant and volant), although mainly composed of common and generalist species, includes three medium- and large-sized species nationally threatened (Leopardus guttulus, Puma concolor and Puma yagouaroundi) and two data deficient species (Galictis cuja and Histiotus velatus), highlighting the importance of this HML for the maintenance and conservation of mammal populations. Despite highly impacted by anthropogenic disturbances, the study area harbors a significant richness of medium- and large-sized mammals, being an important biodiversity refuge in the region. However, this biodiversity is threatened by the low quality of the habitats, roadkills and abundant populations of domestic cats and dogs. Therefore, we stress the need of conservation strategies focusing on the medium- and large-sized mammals as an umbrella group, which could benefit all biodiversity in the landscape. We recommend actions that promotes biological restoration, aiming to increase structural composition and connectivity of the forest fragments, reducing roadkills and controlling the domestic cats and dogs' populations, in order to maintain and improve the diversity of mammals in long-term.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a exposição e a infecção de cavalos baixadeiro e carrapatos por Rickettsia spp. na micro-região da Baixada Maranhense do Estado Maranhão. Um total de 258 cavalos foi testado pelo ensaio de Imunofluorescência Indireta (IFI) para Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia amblyommatis e Rickettsia bellii. Deste total, 58,91% (152/258) foram sororreativos para pelo menos uma espécie de Rickettsia sp., e 85,27% cavalos estavam infestados por uma ou mais espécies de carrapatos identificados como Dermacentor nitens (93,63%), Amblyomma cajennense sensu stricto (4,55%) e Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (1,82%). Estes carrapatos foram submetidos à extração de DNA e testados pela reação em cadeia pela polimerase (PCR) alvejando os genes citrato sintase (gltA) e o de proteína de membrana externa de 190kDa (ompA). Três espécimes de A. cajennense s.s. foram positivos para Rickettsia amblyommatis. As sequências dos nucleotídeos obtidas a partir dos produtos de PCR mostraram 99-100% de identidade com as sequências correspondentes de R. amblyommatis quando analisadas pelo BLAST. Desta forma, os resultados indicam a circulação de R. amblyommatis nos carrapatos e/ou uma cepa muito próxima circulando na microrregião.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate exposure of Baixadeiro horses to Rickettsia spp. and to ticks infected by Rickettsia in the Baixada Maranhense (lowlands) micro-region, state of Maranhão. A total of 258 horses were tested for Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia amblyommatis and Rickettsia bellii using the immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Overall, 58.91% (152/258) of the horses were seroreactive for at least one Rickettsia species, and 85.27% of the horses were infested with one or more species of tick, which were identified as Dermacentor nitens (93.63%), Amblyomma cajennense sensu stricto (4.55%) and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (1.82%). These ticks were subjected to DNA extraction and were tested using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), targeting two rickettsia genes: citrate synthase gene (gltA) and 190kDa outer membrane protein gene (ompA). Three specimens of A. cajennense s.s. were positive. BLAST analyses on the nucleotide sequences obtained from the PCR products showed that these were 99-100% identical to the corresponding sequences of R. amblyommatis. Thus, results indicate that R. amblyommatis and/or a strain very close to this is circulating in ticks in this micro-region.

Abstract Cladoceran males are not very frequent in natural populations, since they are only produced in stress situations. Thus, only a few species have had the male morphology described. Nevertheless, whenever data concerning the morphology of males is available, they are used as a tool to resolve taxonomic problems. In this study, the morphology of Coronatella paulinae Sousa, Elmoor-Loureiro and Santos, 2015 (Cladocera: Chydoridae) was described and compared to other species within the genus. Coronatella paulinae shares the diagnostic morphological traits typically attributed to the genus: (1) gonopores opening ventrally, subapically to the postabdominal claw; (2) marginal setulae arranged in groups on the postanal margin; (3) Inner Distal Lobe (IDL) armed with three setae, of which one is the male seta. The absence of lateral aesthetascs on male antennules might also be an important diagnostic character for the genus, since they are present in other Aloninae groups. Coronatella paulinae males present a unique combination of morphological traits on the postabdomen, which distinguish them from other Coronatella Dybowsky and Grochowski, 1894 species, such as a marked postanal angle and an almost straight basal spine, longer than the mid-length of the postabdominal claw.

O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu no aproveitamento de resíduos de madeira tropical de baixa densidade (Cordia goeldiana) para confecção de chapas de partículas com resinas poliuretanas monocomponente e bicomponente derivadas de óleo de mamona, gerando subsídios como aplicação nas construções rurais e civis, assim como na indústria moveleira. As propriedades físicas e mecânicas investigadas foram: densidade; teor de umidade; módulo de resistência na flexão estática e adesão interna, ambas obtidas segundo os procedimentos de cálculo propostos pela norma Brasileira NBR 14810:2002. As chapas foram confeccionadas com 15% de resina (uma parte de poliol para uma parte de pré-polímero), 4MPa de pressão de compactação, temperatura de prensagem de 90oC e tempo de prensagem de 7 minutos. Os valores médios obtidos das propriedades físicas e mecânicas das chapas foram sistematicamente superiores aos requisitos da norma Brasileira, evidenciando a possibilidade do emprego dos resíduos da madeira de Cordia goeldiana na produção de painéis de partículas. Confirmou-se também a hipótese da significativa relação linear entre a densidade das chapas com a adesão interna, o que possibilita a estimativa da adesão interna para painéis de partículas de madeira.

The aim of this research consisted in the use of wastes from tropical wood (Cordia goeldiana) with low density and the polyurethane resin (mono and bicomponent) castor oil based in the manufacture of particleboards, generating subsidies as application in rural and civil construction, as well in the furniture industry. The particleboards were manufactured with 15% of polyurethane resin content (one part of pre-polymer and one part of polyol), compaction pressure of 4MPa, pressing temperature of 90°C and press time of 7 minutes. The physical and mechanical properties investigated were density, moisture content, strength modulus in bending and internal bond, both obtained according to the recommendations of the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 14810:2002. The mean values obtained for these properties were systematically superior to the Brazilian standard requirement. This point showed that it is possible the use of Cordia goeldiana wastes in the particleboard production. We confirmed the hypothesis of a significant linear relation between density and the internal bond of the panels, allowing the estimation of the internal bond of particleboards.

Introdução: Polímeros biodegradáveis foram desenvolvidos para reduzir a reação de hipersensibilidade associada aos polímeros duráveis dos stents farmacológicos de primeira geração, mantendo sua eficácia antiproliferativa e aumentado sua segurança. Avaliamos os resultados angiográficos de 9 meses e os resultados clínicos de longo prazo dos stents farmacológicos com polímeros biodegradáveis em pacientes com alto risco de reestenose. Métodos: Pacientes com diâmetro de referência ≤ 2,5 mm, extensão da lesão ≥ 15 mm, diabetes, ou uma combinação dessas características foram selecionados da população do estudo PAINT. Esses pacientes foram previamente randomizados e alocados para intervenção coronária percutânea recebendo os stents farmacológicos com polímeros biodegradáveis com sirolimus ou com paclitaxel ou stents metálicos, na razão 2:2:1. Resultados: Cento e setenta e oito pacientes foram tratados com stents farmacológicos com polímeros biodegradáveis (n = 142) ou stents metálicos (n = 36). No acompanhamento angiográfico de 9 meses, os primeiros mostraram menor perda tardia (0,40 ± 0,42 mm vs. 0,90 ± 0,47 mm; p < 0,01) e reestenose binária (7,4% vs. 25%; p < 0,01). No acompanhamento clínico de 5 anos, o grupo com stents farmacológicos com polímeros biodegradáveis mostrou menores taxas do desfecho combinado de morte cardíaca, infarto do miocárdio e revascularização do vaso-alvo (16,2% vs. 38,0%; p = 0,03), principalmente devido à redução da revascularização do vaso-alvo (9,9% vs. 36,1%; p < 0,01). Morte total, morte cardíaca e infarto do miocárdio não foram diferentes entre os grupos. A trombose do stent, provável ou definitiva, ocorreu em 2,8% vs. 0% (p = 0,30). Conclusões: Os stents farmacológicos com polímeros biodegradáveis eluidores de paclitaxel ou sirolimus foram eficazes na redução de reestenose angiográfica aos 9 meses e na necessidade de reintervenção por reestenose clínica em 5 anos, sem aumentar o risco de trombose do stent.

Background: Biodegradable polymers were developed to reduce the hypersensitivity reaction associated to durable polymers found with the first generation drug-eluting stents, while maintaining antiproliferative efficacy and increasing safety. This study evaluated the 9-month angiographic follow-up and long-term clinical outcomes of biodegradable polymer-coated drug-eluting stents compared with identical platform metallic stents in patients with high-risk for restenosis. Methods: Patients with a reference diameter ≤ 2.5 mm, lesion length ≥ 15 mm, diabetes, or a combination of these characteristics were selected from the population of the PAINT trial. These patients were previously randomized and allocated for percutaneous coronary intervention with either a sirolimus-eluting biodegradable polymer-coated stent, a paclitaxel-eluting biodegradable polymer-coated stent, or an identical metallic platform stent, at a ratio of 2:2:1. Results: One hundred and seventy-eight patients were treated with biodegradable polymer-coated drug-eluting stents (n = 142) or bare metal stents (n = 36). At the 9-month angiographic follow-up, biodegradable polymercoated drug-eluting stents had lower rates of late loss (0.40 ± 0.42 mm vs. 0.90 ± 0.47 mm; p < 0.01) and binary restenosis (7.4% vs. 25%; p <0.01). In the 5-year clinical follow-up, the group with biodegradable polymer-coated drug-eluting stents had lower rates of the composite endpoint of cardiac death, myocardial infarction, and target vessel revascularization (16.2% vs. 38.0%; p = 0.03), especially due to the reduction of target vessel revascularization (9.9% vs. 36.1%; (p 0.01). Total death, cardiac death and myocardial infarction were not different among groups. 0% (p = 0.30). Conclusions: Paclitaxel or sirolimus-eluting biodegradable polymer-coated stents were effective in reducing angiographic restenosis at 9 months and the need of reintervention for clinical restenosis in 5 years, without increasing the risk of stent thrombosis.

Yeast communities were assessed in 14 rivers and four lakes from the Doce River basin in Brazil, during the rainy and dry seasons of the years 2000 and 2001. Water samples were collected at the subsurface in all sites. The following physical and chemical parameters were measured: temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, total phosphorus, ortho-phosphate, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite and total nitrogen and the counts of faecal coliforms and heterotrophic bacteria were carried out to characterize the aquatic environmental sampled. The yeast counts were higher in aquatic environments with the highest counts of coliform and heterotrophic bacteria. These environments receive a high influx of domestic and industrial waste. A total of 317 isolates identified in forty eight yeast species were recorded in the sites sampled and the specie Aureobasidium pullulans were found in eleven out of eighteen sites sampled and some opportunistic pathogens such as the yeast species Candida krusei were isolated only in the polluted rivers with a positive correlation with the biotic and abiotic parameters that indicate sewage contamination.

O objetivo do trabalho foi identificar aspectos que interferem na atuação dos agentes de controle de vetores e comunitários de saúde no Programa de Controle do Dengue e na adesão da população. Utilizou-se metodologia de grupos focais, nos quais foi discutida a relação agente-serviço-população. O controle e prevenção do dengue foram considerados atividades de menor importância, e o agente ideal seria aquele capaz de encaminhar todas as demandas e não só aquelas relacionadas ao dengue. Os agentes de controle de vetores apontaram para problemas como recusa e falta de adesão, identificação como coletores de lixo, diferenciação de status em relação aos agentes comunitários de saúde. Entre as mulheres, identificaram-se a relação de culpabilização entre vizinhos, a associação do problema do dengue à falta de higiene e a relação entre casa limpa e ausência de criadouros. Os aspectos destacados interferem negativamente na atuação dos agentes e são condicionados pela característica vertical do programa. Encaminhamentos possíveis: incorporação dos agentes de controle às Unidades de Saúde, investimento na integração intersetorial e criação de condições para que os agentes atuem sobre o meio ambiente.

This study aimed to identify the aspects that interfere with the performance of vector control agents and community health workers and population adherence to dengue control programs. The focal group methodology was applied to discuss the relations between the program, health agents, and population. According to the results, dengue control and prevention were considered relatively unimportant activities, i.e., ideal community health workers would be capable of solving other (supposedly more important) problems. Vector control agents emphasized the population's lack of adherence and the fact that they (the control agents) were confused with garbage collectors (considered less important than community health workers, and with a focus more on productivity than quality). Women frequently blamed neighbors for the dengue problem and associated the disease with lack of hygiene. These aspects have a negative impact on dengue control agents' work and result from the program's vertical structure. Possible solutions would be to incorporate the agents into community health clinics, encourage cooperation between departments, and provide the conditions for them to intervene in the environment.
