RESUMO: A diversificação do uso de variedades porta-enxerto, com a consequente redução de riscos fitossanitários, é de fundamental importância para a sustentabilidade da citricultura do Sul do Brasil. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento de 42 porta-enxertos na formação de mudas de laranjeira ‘Valência Late’ em fase de viveiro. Nesse sentido, seedlings (plantas oriundas da germinação de sementes) nucelares dos porta-enxertos estudados foram avaliados relativamente aos caracteres altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, taxa de mortalidade e percentagem de pegamento de borbulhas após a enxertia. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições de 20 unidades amostrais. Genótipos não adaptados tiveram altas taxas de mortalidade, os híbridos LCR x CTSW - 009 e LVK x LCR - 038 apresentaram 100% e 90% de mortalidade, respectivamente. Mais 13 genótipos apresentaram mortalidade superior a 30%, destes, dez têm como parental feminino a tangerineira ‘Sunki’. O citrumelo ‘Swingle’ foi o porta-enxerto que apresentou maior desenvolvimento (altura da planta e diâmetro do caule), associado a uma baixa taxa de mortalidade. Quanto aos demais porta-enxertos, destacaram-se por atingir rapidamente o diâmetro de enxertia, associado a baixa taxa de mortalidade, os híbridos HTR - 053, LRF x (LCR x TR) - 005, CLEO x TRBN - 245, CLEO x TRSW - 287, citrandarins ‘Indio’, ‘Riverside’ e ‘San Diego’, assim como o limoeiro ‘Cravo’ e o Trifoliata. Além do Trifoliata, amplamente utilizado no Rio Grande do Sul, estes porta-enxertos são promissores para a citricultura do Sul do Brasil.

ABSTRACT: Diversification of rootstock varieties, with consequent reduction in phytosanitary risks, has great importance to the sustainability of citrus cultivation in the south of Brazil. This study evaluated the performance of 42 rootstocks in the nursery phase to generate ‘Valencia Late’ sweet orange seedlings. Therefore, nucellar seedlings from the rootstocks under study were analyzed in relation to plant height, stem diameter, mortality rate and percentage of bud set after grafting. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications of 20 sample units. Not adapted genotypes had high mortality rates, and the ones of both hybrids LCR x CTSW - 009 and LVK x LCR - 038 were 100% and 90%, respectively. Other 13 genotypes had mortality rates above 30%, and ‘Sunki’ mandarin was the female genitor of ten of them. ‘Swingle’ citrumelo was the rootstock with the highest development (plant height and stem diameter), associated with low mortality rate. In relation to the other rootstocks, the best results were the fast grafting diameter, associated with low mortality rate obtained by hybrids HTR - 053, LRF x (LCR x TR) - 005, CLEO x TRBN - 245, CLEO x TRSW - 287, and citrandarins ‘Indio’, ‘Riverside’ and ‘San Diego’, as well as Trifoliate orange and ‘Rangpur’ lime. In addition to Trifoliate orange, which is widely used in Rio Grande do Sul, these rootstocks have great potential in citriculture in the south of Brazil.

Abstract Trachypus Klug is a Neotropical genus of crabronid wasps comprising 31 ground-nesting species. Its species can be solitary or communal, and two diet ranges are known: they can forage on several bee subfamilies and wasps; or can be specialists on stingless bees. Natural history observations are scarce nowadays but are essential to contextualize ecological and evolutionary studies. Here we report new records and give biological notes for Trachypus elongatus (Fabricius, 1804), Trachypus taschenbergiRubio-Espina, 1975, and Trachypus varius (Taschenberg, 1875). Observations and samplings were carried out twice a month, during one year in the city of Curitiba, southern Brazil. Besides field observations, circular statistics were used to analyze seasonality. All species nest in sloped soil and are solitary. Trachypus elongatus and T. taschenbergi were active during most of the year with marked seasonality in the late spring and early summer. Both species were observed hunting only stingless bees, with T. elongatus specialized on Trigona spinipes (Fabricius, 1793), and T. taschenbergi specialized on Paratrigona subnuda Moure, 1947 drones. Trachypus varius was observed only in January and one female was recorded foraging on a Paratrigona subnuda worker. Our observations provide additional data for understanding the biology of bee-hunting wasps, and this is the first study to bring information for T. taschenbergi and T. varius. Our data corroborate that some species of the genus Trachypus are specialized on stingless bees.

ABSTRACT It is essential for health care providers to be familiared with the full spectrum of clinical presentations of syphilis. We present herein a case of syphilide psoriasiforme, an uncommon but well recognized clinical presentation of secondary syphilis. A 46-year-old HIV-infected female patient was referred to our attention with a presumptive diagnosis of palmoplantar psoriasis. On examination, there were exuberant pinkish-red papules and plaques covered with a thick silvery scale in the palms, flexor surfaces of the wrists, and the medial longitudinal arches of the feet. Serological and histopathological analyses uncovered the diagnosis of syphilis. Clinical remission was obtained after treatment. A detailed review of the literature on syphilide psoriasiforme, including descriptions from older syphilology textsis provided. The present case report emphasizes the need for clinicians to have a heightened awareness of the varied and unusual clinical phenotypes of syphilis.

OBJETIVO: a proposição do estudo foi verificar a influência dos hábitos de sucção nas características oclusais da dentição decídua. MÉTODOS: o grupo inicial constituiu-se de 86 bebês com idade de 0 a 3 meses. Sete visitas domiciliares foram realizadas, quando informações sobre a prática da amamentação, hábitos de sucção nutritivos e não-nutritivos, respiração bucal e desenvolvimento da dentição foram coletados. A partir do grupo inicial, 58 crianças foram moldadas em consultório na idade média de 36±2,51 meses. Modelos de estudo foram obtidos e medidos diversos parâmetros da oclusão dentária, tais como profundidade, extensão e largura das arcadas, por dois examinadores comprovadamente calibrados pelo teste de concordância Kappa e correlação de Pearson. RESULTADOS: os resultados demonstraram que o aleitamento artificial por mamadeira antes dos 6 meses esteve associado à largura intermolares inferior (p=0,01). A sucção de chupeta antes dos 6 meses foi estatisticamente associadaà diminuição da largura intercaninos superior (p=0,03) e intermolares superior (p=0,03). Somando-se a isso, o aumento da extensão molar da arcada superior associou-se à perda do vedamento labial antes dos 12 meses de vida (p=0,03). CONCLUSÃO: é possível concluir-se que os hábitos de sucção interferem na determinação de características oclusais na dentição decídua. A sucção de chupeta limita o crescimento da arcada superior; o uso de mamadeira favorece o crescimento laterolateral da mandíbula e o desenvolvimento da mordida aberta; e a ausência de vedamento labial favorece o crescimento maxilar anteroposterior.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify the influence of sucking habits on the occlusal characteristics of the deciduous dentition. METHODS: The initial sample consisted of 86 infants, aged 0 to 3 months. Seven home visits were performed, when and information on breastfeeding practice, nutritive and non-nutritive sucking habits, mouth breathing and dentition development was collected. From the first sample, impressions of the dental arches were obtained from 58 children at the age of 36 months (+2.51SD). Dental casts were obtained and two examiners, trained and calibrated by the Kappa and Pearson Correlation tests, measured several parameters of dental occlusion, such as arch length, depth, and width. RESULTS: The results showed that bottle feeding before 6 months was associated to an increased mandibular intermolar width (p=0.01). Pacifier use before 6 months was statistically associated to a reduction of the maxillary intercanine (p=0.03) and intermolar (p=0.03) width. In addition to these findings, the increased molar depth of the maxillary arch was associated to loss of lip closure before the age of 12 months (p= 0.03). CONCLUSION: According to these results, it could be concluded that sucking habits interfere with the determination of some deciduous occlusal characteristics: pacifier sucking limits lateral-lateral maxillary growth, bottle feeding favors lateral-lateral mandibular growth and open bite development, and the lack of lip closure favors the anteroposterior maxillary growth.

OBJETIVO: Validar as informações da memória materna, sobre amamentação e hábitos de sucção nos primeiros meses da vida de seus filhos. MÉTODOS: Estudo de coorte que acompanhou, durante 36 meses, 86 crianças com idade inicial de zero a três meses, para avaliar os desfechos sobre: amamentação, hábitos de sucção e início da alimentação semissólida. Cerca de seis anos depois do estudo inicial, 53 mães dessas crianças foram reentrevistadas quanto aos hábitos alimentares e de sucção de seus filhos. Testes de Kappa, McNemar, t de Student e correlação intraclasse foram utilizados para testar a relação entre a memória materna pregressa e atual. RESULTADOS: A memória materna pregressa e atual discordou sobre as práticas de sucção de dedo (McNemar; p=0,001) e de chupeta (McNemar; p=0,009) pelos seus filhos. Além disso, a memória materna atual relatou idades mais tardias para o início do uso de mamadeira (t de Student; p=0,043) e da alimentação semissólida (t de Student; p=0,001). Contudo, apresentou um alto coeficiente de correlação intraclasse quando a informação relembrada foi o tempo de amamentação (r=0,923; p=0,001). CONCLUSÕES: Informações maternas, sobre o tempo de amamentação e sobre idade de cessação do hábito de sucção de chupeta são válidas para serem utilizadas em estudos retrospectivos. Com menor nível de validade, podem ser utilizadas as informações sobre a sucção de chupeta e de mamadeira nos primeiros seis meses de vida, somadas à idade da introdução do uso de mamadeira pelas mães.

OBJECTIVE: To validate the information of mothers' memory about breastfeeding and sucking habits in the first months of their children's life. METHODS: A cohort study followed 86 children for 36 months from birth. In the initial moment, zero to three months-old infants were assessed about breastfeeding, sucking habits and semisolid food introduction. Nearly six years after the initial study, 53 mothers of these children were re-interviewed regarding their recall about breastfeeding, sucking habits and semisolid food introduction. Kappa, McNemar, Student's t, and intraclass correlation tests were used to verify the association between previous and current maternal memory. RESULTS: Disagreement between previous and current maternal memory was found regarding thumb-sucking (McNemar; p=0.001) and pacifier use (McNemar; p=0.009). In addition, mothers in the current interview report older ages for introducing bottle feed (Student's t; p=0.043) and semisolid food (Student's t; p=0.001). However, memory about duration of breastfeeding presented high intraclass correlation coefficient (r=0.923; p=0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal information about duration of breastfeeding and age of pacifier withdraw is valid for use in retrospective studies. Introduction of bottle feeding, pacifier and semisolid foods during the first six months of life may suffer a recordatory bias.

OBJETIVO: Validar las informaciones de la memoria materna sobre amamantación y hábitos de succión los primeros meses de la vida de sus hijos, en Vitória, Espírito Santo (Brasil). MÉTODOS: Estudio de cohorte que siguió, durante 36 meses, a 86 niños con edad inicial de cero a tres meses para evaluar los desenlaces sobre: amamantación, hábitos de succión e inicio de la alimentación semi-sólida. Aproximadamente seis años después del estudio inicial, 53 madres de esos niños fueron re-entrevistados respecto a los hábitos alimentares y de succión de sus hijos. Pruebas de Kappa, McNemar, t de Student y correlación intraclase fueron utilizadas para probar la relación entre la memoria materna anterior y actual. RESULTADOS: La memoria materna anterior y actual discordó sobre las prácticas de succión de dedo (McNemar; p=0,001) y de chupete (McNemar; p=0,009) por sus hijos. Además, la memoria materna actual relató edades más tardías para el inicio del biberón (t de Student; p=0,043) y de la alimentación semi-sólida (t de Student; p=0,001). Sin embargo, presentó un alto coeficiente de correlación intraclase cuando la información recordada fue el tiempo de amamantación (r=0,923; p=0,001). CONCLUSIONES: Informaciones maternas sobre el tiempo de amamantación y sobre la edad de término del hábito de succión del chupete son válidas para uso en estudios retrospectivos. Con menor nivel de validez, se puede utilizar las informaciones sobre la succión de chupete y de biberón en los primeros seis meses de vida, sumadas a la edad de la introducción del uso de biberón por las madres
