ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Managing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN2) is challenging, considering the CIN2 regression rate, perinatal risks associated with excisional procedures, and insufficient well-established risk factors to predict progression. OBJECTIVES: To determine the ability of p16INK4a and Ki-67 staining in biopsies diagnosed with CIN2 to identify patients with higher-grade lesions (CIN3 or carcinoma). DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study conducted at a referral center for treating uterine cervical lesions. METHODS: In 79 women, we analyzed the correlation of p16INK4a and Ki-67 expression in CIN2 biopsies with the presence of a higher-grade lesions, as determined via histopathology in surgical specimens from treated women or via two colposcopies and two cytological tests during follow-up for untreated women with at least a 6-month interval. The expression of these two biomarkers was verified by at least two independent pathologists and quantified using digital algorithms. RESULTS: Thirteen (16.8%) women with CIN2 biopsy exhibited higher-grade lesions on the surgical excision specimen or during follow-up. p16INK4a expression positively and negatively predicted the presence of higher-grade lesions in 17.19% and 86.67% patients, respectively. Ki-67 expression positively and negatively predicted the presence of higher-grade lesions in 40% and 88.24% patients, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Negative p16INK4a and Ki67 immunohistochemical staining can assure absence of a higher-grade lesion in more than 85% of patients with CIN2 biopsies and can be used to prevent overtreatment of these patients. Positive IHC staining for p16INK4a and Ki-67 did not predict CIN3 in patients with CIN2 biopsies.

ABSTRACT I describe in this article the ethos of Brazilians studying Vedanta in India. To understand their experiences, I look into the Vedanta worldview, whose recurrent practices, especially meditation and yoga, accompanied by the study of sacred Hindu texts, are eventually embodied to their lifestyles. My analysis is based on the link between their ongoing studies in India and the significant transformations that occur not only in their lifestyle but also in their worldview. The purpose is to highlight the existence and meaning of some of these transformations, which might even cause a “paradigm shift” (a “native” category) - something so intense that it could lead them to reevaluate their deepest feelings. I, then, examine these transformations as consequences of their spiritual search projects.

RESUMO Descrevo neste artigo o ethos de brasileiros que estudam Vedanta na Índia. Para compreender suas experiências, investigo a cosmovisão vedantina, cujas práticas, especialmente as de meditação e yoga, são recorrentes e acompanham o estudo de textos sagrados hindus, sendo então incorporadas a seus estilos de vida. Minha análise baseia-se na articulação entre a realização de estudos na Índia e as significativas transformações que ocorrem não apenas em seus estilos de vida, mas em suas visões de mundo. O objetivo é destacar a existência e o significado de algumas dessas transformações, que chegam a causar uma “mudança de paradigmas” (uma categoria “nativa”) - algo tão intenso que pode os levar a reavaliar seus mais profundos sentimentos. Examino então essas transformações como consequência de seus projetos de busca espiritual.

Abstract The present article analyzes the meanings attributed by Vedanta students and yoga practitioners from Rio de Janeiro who have made two pilgrimages to India to what they understand as devotion and conversion to a “Neo-Hindu” group. My main concerns are to understand the meanings these journeys represent and in which sense devotion is felt by certain members of the group. I observe that devotion was frequently triggered when coming across Hindu temples and symbols; therefore, despite seeing themselves as “Hindus” in Brazil, India itself has been revealed as a place conducive to the manifestation and renegotiation of the creeds and meanings of “being Hindu” in the Brazilian context. From this, I critically reflect upon the individualism inherent in these actors’ understandings of spirituality, as opposed to religion, showing how my interlocutors adhere to authority and tradition and how they adapt to social norms in the process of building a worldview that is socially organized and systematized.

Resumen Este artículo indaga sobre el significado que los estudiantes de Vedanta y practicantes de yoga de Río de Janeiro, que hicieron dos viajes de peregrinaje a la India, atribuyen a lo que entienden por devoción y conversión a un grupo “neo-hindú”. Las cuestiones principales son comprender los significados que asumen estos viajes y el sentido de devoción por parte de algunos miembros del grupo. Observo que la devoción se desencadenaba a menudo cuando se encuentran frente a templos y símbolos de la cultura hindú -una experiencia propicia para la manifestación y renegociación de sus creencias y el significado de “ser hindú” en ese contexto. A partir de allí, realizo una reflexión crítica del individualismo inherente a la comprensión de la espiritualidad frente a la religión, mostrando cómo los interlocutores se adhieren a la autoridad y la tradición y se adaptan a las normas sociales en el marco de un proceso de construcción de una mirada socialmente organizada y sistematizada.

Resumo Este artigo investiga o sentido que estudantes de Vedanta e praticantes de yoga do Rio de Janeiro, que realizaram duas viagens de peregrinação à Índia, atribuem ao que entendem por devoção e conversão a um grupo “neo-hindu”. As questões principais são entender os significados que assumem essas viagens e o sentido de devoção por parte de alguns integrantes do grupo. Observo que a devoção foi frequentemente mobilizada ao se depararem com templos e símbolos da cultura hindu - uma vivência propícia para a manifestação e renegociação de suas crenças e do significado de “ser hindu” naquele contexto. Faço, a partir disso, uma reflexão crítica do individualismo inerente ao entendimento da espiritualidade como oposta à religião, mostrando como os interlocutores aderem à autoridade e à tradição e se adaptam às normas sociais no processo da construção de um olhar que é socialmente organizado e sistematizado.

Abstract In this article, I discuss the dimensions of spirituality related to the body and subjectivities of yoga and meditation practitioners, both the Vedanta students that I have been researching for a long period of time, as well as a meditation and yoga group which I came across with in a social media platform. I understand that the transformation that their bodies undergo, through physical and mental techniques, involves the adoption of an “Orientalised” lifestyle in their worldview or way of thinking. Practitioners tend to ritualise life as a whole, giving new meanings to their multiple experiences and perceiving themselves as continually connected to the cosmos. Seeking to understand the contradictions in their perceptions of self, I discuss the reflexive processes inherent in these practices in order to understand how practitioners build their identity. I consider their identity as based on an “internal” discipline, a type of renunciation that suggests asceticism; an ascesis that seems to incorporate an “external” model of the yogic tradition, but which is internalised through the performance of disciplines that naturalise certain emotions and behaviours.

Resumen En este artículo analizo las dimensiones de la espiritualidad relacionadas con el cuerpo y las subjetividades de los practicantes de yoga y meditación, tanto de los estudiantes de Vedanta que he estado investigando durante un largo tiempo, como de un grupo de meditación y yoga que detecté en una plataforma de redes sociales. Entiendo que la transformación que experimentan sus cuerpos, a través de técnicas físicas y mentales, implica la adopción de un estilo de vida “orientalizado” en su cosmovisión o forma de pensar. Los practicantes tienden a ritualizar la vida como un todo, dando nuevos significados a sus múltiples experiencias y percibiéndose a sí mismos como continuamente conectados con el cosmos. Analizo los procesos reflexivos inherentes a estas prácticas para comprender cómo los practicantes construyen su identidad y las contradicciones en sus percepciones de sí mismos. Considero su identidad como basada en una disciplina “interna”, una renuncia que sugiere ascetismo; una ascesis que parece incorporar un modelo “externo” de la tradición yóguica, pero que se interioriza mediante la realización de disciplinas que naturalizan determinadas emociones y comportamientos.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication during the postoperative period following liver transplantation. Occurrence of AKI in intensive care unit (ICU) patients is associated with increased mortality and higher costs. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate occurrences of moderate or severe AKI among patients admitted to the ICU after liver transplantation and investigate characteristics associated with this complication. DESIGN AND SETTING: Single-center retrospective cohort study in a public hospital, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. METHODS: Forty-nine patients admitted to the ICU between January 2015 and April 2017 were included. AKI was defined from a modified Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) score (i.e. based exclusively on serum creatinine levels). RESULTS: Eighteen patients (36.7%) developed AKI KDIGO 2 or 3; mostly KDIGO 3 (16 out of the 18 patients). Lactate level within the first six hours after ICU admission (odds ratio, OR: 1.3; 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.021-1.717; P = 0.034) and blood transfusion requirement within the first week following transplantation (OR: 8.4; 95% CI: 1.687-41.824; P = 0.009) were independently associated with development of AKI. Patients with AKI KDIGO 2 or 3 underwent more renal replacement therapy (72.2% versus 3.2%; P < 0.01), had longer hospital stay (20 days versus 15 days; P = 0.001), higher in-hospital mortality (44.4% versus 6.5%; P < 0.01) and higher mortality rate after one year (44.4% versus 9.7%; P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Need for blood transfusion during ICU stay and hyperlactatemia within the first six postoperative hours after liver transplantation are independently associated with moderate or severe AKI. Developing AKI is apparently associated with poor outcomes.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening in Brazil is done using Pap smears. Women who are most likely to have a preinvasive lesion or cervical cancer are immediately referred for colposcopy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of endocervical cytological tests in diagnosing preinvasive cervical lesions in women with initial high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), or atypical squamous cells in which high-grade lesions could not be ruled out (ASC-H), or atypical glandular cells (AGC), and whose colposcopy did not show any abnormalities, with no fully visible transformation zone (types 2 and 3). DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective observational study conducted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS: Data from women who came to the cervical pathology outpatient clinic between January 2012 and April 2017 were analyzed. The results from endocervical cytological tests were compared with the final diagnosis, which was obtained through examination of a surgical specimen or, among women who did not undergo an excisional procedure, after cytological and colposcopic follow-up for two years. RESULTS: We included 78 women. The sensitivity of endocervical cytological tests was 72.7%; specificity 98.5%; positive and negative predictive values 88.9% and 95.6%, respectively; and positive and negative likelihood ratios 48.7 and 0.28. CONCLUSION: Endocervical cytological tests are simple, inexpensive and noninvasive, and form a reliable method for determining management among patients with HSIL, ASC-H and AGC cytological findings and negative colposcopic findings without visualization of the squamocolumnar junction.

RESUMO: A crescente utilização de Vernonia condensata Baker evidencia a importância de desenvolver estratégias que reduzam o extrativismo nos ambientes naturais. O estudo objetivou estabelecer protocolo de micropropagação produzindo plantas homogêneas e de alta qualidade fitossanitária. Foram utilizados, na etapa de estabelecimento in vitro, segmentos apicais, intermodais e nodais de plantas cultivadas no campo. Desinfestados em solução de hipoclorito de sódio (1,0 e 2,0%) no tempo de 15 e 30 minutos e em seguida introduzidos em placa de Petri, com meio de cultura MS, durante 30 dias. Foi utilizado o delineamento inteiramente casualizado no esquema fatorial (3 x 2 x 2), com cinco repetições. Após este período, foi montado o experimento de multiplicação in vitro, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com seis tratamentos (BAP - 0,0; 0,5; 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; 2,5 mg L-1) e seis repetições. As brotações obtidas no melhor tratamento foram transferidas para frascos com meio de cultura de enraizamento (MS, MS/2 e MS/4). Esse experimento foi conduzido no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 12 repetições. A aclimatização foi realizada introduzindo as microplantas em garrafas do tipo PET contendo terra vegetal autoclavada. Os resultados mostraram que 40,0% dos segmentos nodais (imersos em 1,0% de hipoclorito de sódio, durante 30 minutos) foram desinfestados e sobreviveram. No experimento de multiplicação in vitro obteve-se a melhor resposta no número de brotos e no desenvolvimento vegetativo, na concentração de 0,5 mg L-1 de BAP. O meio de cultura de enraizamento que possibilitou a melhor resposta, nas características avaliadas, foi o MS/4. Durante a aclimatização obteve-se 100% de plantas sobreviventes, oriundas do meio MS/4. A realização desse trabalho permite estimar a obtenção de 32.000 mudas de V. condensata, após sete meses de cultivo in vitro.

ABSTRACT: The increasing use of Vernonia condensata Baker highlights the importance of developing strategies to reduce the impact of exploitation on nature reserves. The aim of this study was to establish a micropropagation protocol to produce homogenous plants with high phytosanitary quality. Apical, nodal, and internodal segments of plants grown in the field were used for in vitro growth. The segments were disinfected in sodium hypochlorite solution (1.0 and 2.0%) for 15 and 30 minutes and then transferred to Petri dishes containing MS culture medium for 30 days. A completely randomized factorial experiment (3 x 2 x 2) with five replicates was designed. After this period, a completely randomized in vitro multiplication experiment was carried out with six treatments (BAP - 0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5 mg L-1) and six replicates. The shoots obtained in the best treatment were transferred to flasks with rooting medium (MS, MS/2 or MS/4). The experiment was completely randomized with 12 replicates. Microplants were acclimatized in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles filled with autoclaved topsoil. Our results showed that 40.0% of the nodal segments (immersed in 1.0% sodium hypochlorite for 30 minutes) were adequately disinfected and survived. In the in vitro multiplication experiment, the 0.5 mg L-1 concentration of BAP yielded the highest number of shoots and the best vegetative growth. With regard to the assessed characteristics, MS/4 was the best rooting medium, with 100% survival during acclimatization. This study showed that V. condensata in vitro culture might produce 32,000 seedlings in 7 months.

Resumo Duroia saccifera (Rubiaceae) ocorre na floresta Amazônica. Seus extratos apresentaram atividade antibacteriana. Para obter maiores quantidades de substâncias ativas, foram utilizados segmentos de folhas de plântulas in vitro de D. saccifera como explantes para indução de calos; os calos foram multiplicados através de múltiplos subcultivos, depois secos e extraídos com hexano, seguido por acetato de etila (AcOEt) e metanol (MeOH). Como D. macrophylla foi relatada como produtora de substâncias antimicobacterianas, os extratos de calos foram testados contra Mycobacterium tuberculosis (cepa H37Rv). O extrato AcOEt dos calos foi ativo, com uma concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) de ≤ 25 mg mL-1, IC90de 19,5 mg mL-1 e concentração bactericida mínima (MBC) de 200 mg mL-1. O extrato AcOEt foi analisado por cromatografia em camada delgada comparativa (CCDC) e Ressonância Magnética Nuclear (RMN) para determinar o seu perfil químico e mostrou ser rico em terpenos. O fracionamento cromatográfico do extrato AcOEt conduziu ao isolamento de uma mistura de dois esteroides, β-sitosterol e estigmasterol (na proporção de 2:1), os quais foram identificados por análises de RMN de 1H e bidimensionais. Pelo levantamento bibliográfico realizado, este é o primeiro relato da cultura de células in vitro de Duroia saccifera, da atividade antituberculose do extrato de calos e do isolamento de β-sitosterol e estigmasterol da cultura de células vegetais in vitro da espécie.

Abstract Duroia saccifera (Rubiaceae) occurs in the Amazon rainforest and their extracts showed antibacterial properties. To obtain greater quantities of active substances, leaf segments from in vitro D. saccifera seedlings were used as explants for calli induction; calli were multiplied via multiple subcultures, dried and extracted with hexane followed by ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH). As D. macrophylla had been reported to produce antimycobacterial substances, we assayed calli extracts against Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H37Rv strain). Calli EtOAc extract was active, with a minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ≤ 25 mg mL-1, IC90of 19.5 mg mL-1 and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 200 mg mL-1. EtOAc extract was analyzed by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) to determine its chemical profile, and was found to be rich in terpenes. Chromatographic fractionation of the EtOAc extract yielded a mixture of two sterols, β-sitosterol and stigmasterol (in proportion of 2:1), which were identified by 1H and 13C NMR analysis. As far as we know, this is the first report of Duroia saccifera in vitro cell culture, antituberculosis activity of calli extract and β-sitosterol and stigmasterol isolation from in vitro plant cell culture.

Foram estudados documentos das fontes: BVS/SP, SciELO, Scopus, PubMed, e Web of Science com os seguintes descritores: tentativa de suicídio, ideação suicida, autonegligência, idoso, instituição de longa permanência, e seus correspondentes em língua inglesa, espanhola e francesa. Encontraram-se 26 artigos sobre a temática. Existe consenso entre os autores, cujos textos foram analisados, sobre os fatores que levam os idosos ao comportamento suicida: depressão, doença e dor, luto complicado e traumático, ansiedade e desespero após recuperação de episódio depressivo, condições de vida precária, morte de parentes próximos e amigos, conflitos familiares, história familiar de eventos autoinfligidos. Os fatores de proteção encontrados são religiosidade, estilo de vida otimista, satisfação com a vida e investimento na autonomia e no poder dos relacionamentos e da comunicação e tratamento farmacológico acompanhado para transtornos mentais como depressão.

Documents were retrieved from the following sources: BVS/SP, SciELO, Scopus, PubMed and Web of Science, with the following descriptors: suicide attempt, suicidal ideation, self-neglect, elderly, long-term care establishment, and their correspondents in Portuguese, Spanish and French. Twenty-six papers on the subject were found. There is a consensus among the authors, whose texts are analyzed here, concerning the factors that lead the elderly to suicidal behavior: depression, illness and pain, complicated and traumatic mourning, anxiety and despair after recovery from depressive episode, poor living conditions, death of close relatives, friends, family conflicts, family history of self-inflicted events. The protection factors found are religiosity, optimistic lifestyle, satisfaction with life and investment in the autonomy and power of relationships and communication and monitored drug therapy for mental disorders such as depression.

Resumo: Este artigo analisa os significados de se tornar devoto, segundo a tradição de ensinamento Vedanta, e algumas implicações decorrentes deste tipo de experiência vivenciada pelos interlocutores. Baseia-se no trabalho de campo realizado junto a um grupo de estudantes de Vedanta não dualista que vive na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Os significados desse aprendizado serão retratados, assim como sua implicação sobre o estilo de vida do grupo. Além disto, questões como trajetória do indivíduo ocidental, desencantamento espiritual e perda fundamental do sentido de viver serão discutidas, com a finalidade de análise a respeito do tipo de religiosidade praticado pelo grupo pesquisado e, em última instância, de contribuir para o entendimento do(s) significado(s) de ser “religioso” ou “espiritualizado” na modernidade.

Abstract: This article analyzes the meanings of becoming a devotee, according to the Vedanta tradition, and some implications arising from this type of experience lived by the informants. It is based upon fieldwork of a group of Non-dualism Vedanta students that live in Rio de Janeiro. The meanings of this learning process will be portrayed, as well as its implications on the life style of the group. Furthermore, matters such as the trajectory of the Western individual, spiritual disenchantment, fundamental loss of the purpose of living will be discussed, with the aim of analyzing the kind of religious beliefs practiced by the group, thus contributing to the understanding of the meanings of being “religious” or “spiritualized” today.

Introduction: This work presents the development of a novel robotic knee exoskeleton controlled by motion intention based on sEMG, which uses admittance control to assist people with reduced mobility and improve their locomotion. Clinical research remark that these devices working in constant interaction with the neuromuscular and skeletal human system improves functional compensation and rehabilitation. Hence, the users become an active part of the training/rehabilitation, facilitating their involvement and improving their neural plasticity. For recognition of the lower-limb motion intention and discrimination of knee movements, sEMG from both lower-limb and trunk are used, which implies a new approach to control robotic assistive devices. Methods A control system that includes a stage for human-motion intention recognition (HMIR), based on techniques to classify motion classes related to knee joint were developed. For translation of the user’s intention to a desired state for the robotic knee exoskeleton, the system also includes a finite state machine and admittance, velocity and trajectory controllers with a function that allows stopping the movement according to the users intention. Results The proposed HMIR showed an accuracy between 76% to 83% for lower-limb muscles, and 71% to 77% for trunk muscles to classify motor classes of lower-limb movements. Experimental results of the controller showed that the admittance controller proposed here offers knee support in 50% of the gait cycle and assists correctly the motion classes. Conclusion The robotic knee exoskeleton introduced here is an alternative method to empower knee movements using sEMG signals from lower-limb and trunk muscles.

Resumen El modelo clásico de organización política atraviesa un proceso de crisis profunda. Inexorablemente, las "fronteras" políticas, económicas, jurídicas, sociales y culturales de los Estados se tornan cada vez más porosas (para no decir sin sentido). Esta situación hace que las diferenciaciones entre derecho y política modernamente operadas por la constitución se diluyan, hasta el punto de que los elementos conceptuales clásicamente formulados por la teoría constitucional se muestran ahora incapaces de resolver los problemas relativos a la normativa social y las pretensiones de ordenación social. Este artículo pretende discutir en qué medida es posible mantener las funciones tradicionales asignadas a la constitución en vista de la ampliación de las áreas de regulación transnacional. Trata, en otras palabras, de entender las consecuencias y las posibilidades de (re)organización del proceso de ordenación que afectan al diseño estructural de la soberanía constitucional en su forma más fundamental, es decir, en su capacidad soberana para decidir en un determinado territorio. Se hace énfasis en la dimensión institucional de estas transformaciones, con vistas a formular, al final de este artículo, las bases para la identificación de un modelo de pluralismo constitucional apoyado sobre las máximas de pluralidad, ordenación heterárquica y conflictividad.

Abstract This article aims to discuss to what extent it is possible to maintain the traditional function assigned to the constitution when it is confronted with the expanding the areas of transnational regulation. In other words, it to understand the consequences and possibilities of (re)organization of the ordering process that affects the structural design of constitutional sovereignty in its most fundamental feature, that is, its sovereign capacity to decide in a given territory.

Resumo Este estudo teve como objetivo pesquisar as espécies de felídeos que circulam no Parque Nacional da Serra dos Órgãos (Parnaso), bem como as formas evolutivas de parasitos gastrintestinais nas fezes desses animais. Entre 2013 e 2015, fezes de felídeos foram coletadas nas trilhas do Parnaso, sendo os pontos de coleta georeferenciados. Foram coletadas 82 amostras fecais, sendo 79 do ambiente, duas de felídeos capturados e uma de um animal necropsiado. Todas as amostras foram submetidas a técnicas coproparasitológicas, sendo as coletadas do ambiente também analisadas pela tricologia. Em 32 amostras coletadas do solo foram identificados padrões de pelos de Leopardus guttulus , Leopardus pardalis, Leopardus wiedii e Puma yagouaroundi. Elevada frequência de formas evolutivas potencialmente parasitárias (88,6%) foi evidenciada nas fezes dos felídeos, destacando os ovos da Família Diphyllobotrhiidae (68,6%). Além destes, também foram detectados, ovos da superfamília Ascaridoidea (42,9%), larvas de nematoides (28,6%), ovos da ordem Strongylida (28,6%), Capillaria sp. (8,6%), Trichuris sp. (8,6%), ovos da família Spirurida (2,9%), oocistos de coccídios não esporulados (8,6%) e Eimeria sp. (2,9%). As fezes dos felídeos apresentaram maior frequência de poliparasitismo (60%) que de monoparasitismo (28,6%).

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the species of felids that inhabit the Serra dos Órgãos National Park (Parnaso) and gastrointestinal parasites at various stages of their life cycles in the feces of these animals. Between 2013 and 2015, felid feces were collected from trails in Parnaso. The sampling points were georeferenced. A total of 82 fecal samples were processed, of which 79 were collected on the ground, two from captured felids and one from a necropsied animal. All samples underwent coproparasitological techniques. Samples collected from the environment underwent additional trichological analysis. Fur patterns corresponding to Leopardus guttulus, Leopardus pardalis, Leopardus wiedii and Puma yagouaroundi were observed in 32 of the samples collected on the soil. High frequency of potentially parasitic evolving forms (88.6%) was observed in felid feces, particularly eggs of the family Diphyllobothriidae (68.6%). Besides, were also detected, eggs of superfamily Ascaridoidea (42.9%), nematode larvae (28.6%), eggs of order Strongylida (28.6%), Capillaria sp. (8.6%), Trichuris sp. (8.6%), eggs of order Spirurida (2.9%), unsporulated coccidian oocysts (8.6%) and Eimeria sp. (2.9%). Felid feces presented higher frequency of polyparasitism (60%) than monoparasitism (28.6%).

Abstract The fractionation of apitoxin (bee venom) by means of a commercial 10 kDa ultrafiltration membrane was investigated aiming at the removal of phospholipase A2, the main allergenic substance. The feed content was varied from 1 to 50 g apitoxin/L, in deionized water, and caused changes in membrane flux and rejection, due to concentration polarization. The increase in pressure difference and stirring rate improved the flux through the membrane. The best result was achieved for 1 g apitoxin/L in feed stream, with a pressure difference of 220 kPa, and 750 rpm, with a permeate flux of 103 kg/m2h. The use of ultrafiltration was efficient to improve the permeate safety since biological tests revealed that the remaining enzyme lost its ability to catalyze the hydrolysis of phospholipids.
