Abstract Automotive windshield represents a large volume of solid waste due to limited recycling. Glass-ceramics were produced from discarded windshields with Nb2O5 as a nucleating agent at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, and 15 wt% at 700 and 800 °C sintering temperatures. Mechanical and electrical characterizations of glass-ceramics were performed. Equibiaxial flexural strength was performed and related to porosity. At 700 °C, Nb2O5 favors the monoclinic NaNbO3 phase with perovskite structure. At 800 °C, high Nb2O5 content formed crystalline phases of perovskite and quartz. Dielectric constant and electrical conductivity increased with the addition of Nb2O5, reaching 64 and 4.3 μS/m for 15 wt% Nb2O5 at 700oC. At 800oC, niobium pentoxide reduces the biaxial flexural strength from 28.7 to 14.4 MPa; while increasing the electrical conductivity from 0.10 to 0.33 µS/m for samples with 0 and 15 wt%.

Soluções simuladoras do fluido corpóreo (SBFs) são usadas em avaliação de biocompatibilidade de biomateriais e também como processo de recobrimento alternativo à aspersão por plasma. Processos biomiméticos ocorrem heterogeneamente sobre superfícies metálicas; portanto, o uso da técnica de microeletrodo é muito recomendável para detectar mudanças na superfície. Neste trabalho, o pH local foi monitorado durante as primeiras 44 h de deposição de fosfato de cálcio em amostras de titânio com uma solução SBF simplificada. Dados tridimensionais (pH local, coordenadas x-y) foram empregados para simular as concentrações de equilíbrio para todas as espécies químicas. Baseadas nestas quantidades, foram calculadas as supersaturações relativas e variações de energia de Gibbs para hidroxiapatita e fosfato octacálcico. A abordagem experimental e teórica conjunta sugere que nem a alcalinidade local nem a concentração de cálcio livre fornecem um cenário adequado sobre a condição de precipitação, mas o uso simultâneo produz resultados interessantes não obtidos com somente uma delas.

Simulated body fluids (SBFs) are largely used as biocompatibility screening and also as an alternative process to the plasma spray coating. Biomimetic processes occur heterogeneously on metallic surface; therefore, the use of a microelectrode technique is highly advisable to detect surface changes. In this work, the local pH was monitored during the first 44 h of deposition of calcium phosphates on titanium samples with a simplified SBF solution. Three-dimensional data (local pH, x-y coordinates) were used to simulate equilibrium concentrations of all species. Based on these quantities, relative supersaturations and Gibbs energy variations of hydroxyapatite and octacalcium phosphate were evaluated. The conjoint experimental and theoretical approach suggested that neither local alkalinity nor free calcium concentration alone produces an adequate scenario of precipitation conditions, but the use of both procedures results in interesting findings not achieved using only a single approach.

O contato de metais, usados como biomateriais, em soluções que simulam a parte inorgânica e acelular do plasma sanguíneo (SBF) permite avaliar sua capacidade de precipitar fosfatos de cálcio. Estes fosfatos podem se formar na interface material-tecido, sendo importantes quando o material é implantado in vivo. Para tanto, várias soluções que possibilitam a deposição biomimética, como as de Kokubo, Neuman e Ringer são usadas na promoção da precipitação de fosfatos. Estas soluções utilizam diversos reagentes, sendo que muitos deles não são necessários na estequiometria dos principais fosfatos de cálcio. A partir de um estudo teórico que prevê a estabilidade termodinâmica de soluções, houve a motivação para projetar e experimentar in vitro uma solução simplificada. Desta forma, amostras de Ti foram lixadas, tratadas com NaOH 1M e posteriormente submetidas à exposição na solução simplificada. Após esta exposição por vários dias as superfícies foram analisadas por MEV/EDS e DRX para avaliar a ocorrência e as características do depósito. Pelos resultados experimentais é possível afirmar que a fase precipitada é o fosfato octacálcico, o que está de acordo com os resultados teóricos.

The contact of materials such as metals used as biomaterials in simulated body solutions (SBF) that mimetize the inorganic and acellular part of blood plasma allows the evaluation of its capacity of calcium phosphate precipitation. These phosphates can precipitate by biomimetic route in the interface material-tissue, being important when the material is in vivo implanted. In addition, there are several solutions that favor this biomimetic deposition such as named as Kokubo, Neuman and Ringer, and they are used in the promotion of precipitation. These solutions employed several reagents; some of them are not necessary in the stoichiometry of the main calcium phosphates. From a theoretical study that showed the possibility of using a simplified solution, we decide to investigate this solution in vitro precipitation conditions. In this way, samples of Ti were grinding, treated with 1M NaOH and subsequently exposed to simplified SBF. After the exposure of surfaces, they were analyzed by SEM/EDS and XRD to characterize the deposits. The experimental results show that the precipitated phase is octacalcium phosphate, which corroborate theoretical findings.

Neste trabalho foi investigado o comportamento do aço inoxidável austenítico UNS S30400 em corrosão sob tensão em meios ácidos contendo cloreto à temperatura ambiente. Ensaios de impedância eletroquímica e ruído eletroquímico em corrente foram realizados a diversos níveis de carregamento concomitantemente com o tracionamento a baixa taxa de deformação em pH 0,00 e 1,00 para avaliar a evolução das variáveis eletroquímicas relacionadas com a interface sob deformação. A partir dos resultados obtidos pôde-se constatar que, ao contrário do que ocorre em pH 1,00, o ataque corrosivo a pH 0,00 se caracteriza por intenso trincamento concomitante à instalação progressiva de um processo de corrosão generalizada da superfície metálica. O emprego conjunto das técnicas de impedância e ruído eletroquímico em corrente fornece informações complementares sobre a interdependência da dissolução e do trincamento do aço inoxidável à diferente agressividade representada pelo eletrólito.

This paper is aimed at investigating the electrochemical behavior of austenitic stainless steel UNS S30400 under stress corrosion cracking conditions in acidic solutions at room temperature. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical current noise measurements were performed at different stress levels during slow strain rate tests at pH 0.00 and 1.00 in order to evaluate the influence of mechanical deformation on the evolution of the electrochemical responses of the interface. Results have shown that, differently to what happens at pH 1.00, the corrosive attack at pH 0.00 is characterized by intensive cracking concomitantly to the progressive spreading out of uniform corrosion on the metallic surface. The coupling of both electrochemical impedance and current noise techniques provided complementary information about the interplay between dissolution and cracking of the stainless steel exposed to electrolytes of different aggressiveness.

Inúmeras abordagens neurais têm sido propostas na literatura para resolver problemas de Fluxo de Potência Ótimo DC. Mais especificamente, a rede de Hopfield é o modelo de rede mais utilizado nesses tipos de problemas. A maioria destes modelos, entretanto, ignora o sistema de transmissão. Tal simplificação deixa de considerar importantes restrições de potência ativa, podendo conduzir a cálculos equivocados de despacho. Outras desvantagens encontradas até então dizem respeito a problemas de velocidade, e também à dificuldade de se garantir a factibilidade das soluções. Este artigo discute a aplicação de uma rede de Hopfield modificada para resolver eficientemente problemas de Fluxo de Potência Ótimo DC. O sistema de transmissão neste caso é representado através de equações de fluxo de carga lineares e de restrições no fluxo de potência ativa. Os parâmetros internos da rede de Hopfield modificada apresentada neste artigo são computados através da técnica de subespaço-válido de soluções, o qual garante que as soluções encontradas pela rede (pontos de equilíbrio) sejam sempre factíveis. Resultados de simulações e uma análise de situações envolvendo sistemas testes IEEE são apresentados de modo a ilustrar a eficiência da abordagem proposta.

Problems involving DC Optimal Power Flow have been solved by several neural approaches proposed in the literature. The approaches based on Hopfield models are those more used for mapping these types of problems. However, most of these models ignore the transmission system, which leave of taking into account important active power constraints. This fact can lead to solutions obtained by the networks to improper dispatch policies. Moreover, problems involving convergence speed and difficulty of guaranteeing feasible solutions are also found in some approaches. This paper presents a modified Hopfield network to solve DC Optimal Power Flow in an efficient way. The transmission system in this model is represented by linear load flow equations and constraints on active power flows. The internal parameters of the modified Hopfield network are computed using the valid-subspace technique, which guarantees the obtainment of feasible solutions (equilibrium points) by the developed network. Simulation results and a sensitive analisys involving IEEE test systems are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.
