ABSTRACT Palm trees are propagated almost exclusively by seeds and each species germinates under a certain temperature range. In this sense, the two-way thermogradient plate may be used to determine temperature limits for germination and seed response to temperature. The objective was to define the alternating temperature regime promoting higher and faster seed germination of Carpentaria acuminata and Phoenix canariensis palms using a two-way thermogradient plate. This equipment allowed 64 combinations of alternating and constant temperatures, ranging from 6.97 to 36.42 ºC for C. acuminata, and 7.96 to 35.94 ºC for P. canariensis. Seeds were sown in Petri dishes (25 x 9 cm) containing 1% water agar. Linear regressions were estimated to determine cardinal temperatures. After 50 days, non-germinated seeds were transferred from the two-way thermogradient plate to a germination chamber at 30 °C. The temperature regime promoting highest seed germination percentage of C. acuminata was 30.45/33.00 °C (day/night), with minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures of 9.13, 28.53, and 36.33 °C, respectively. For seed germination of P. canariensis, the most appropriate temperature regime was 29.77/17.93 °C (day/night), with minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures of 9.53, 28.03, and 35.43 °C, respectively.

RESUMO: O áster (Aster ericoides L.) é originário da América do Norte, pertence à família Asteraceae, possui inflorescências do tipo capítulo e é muito usada como flor de corte. No Brasil, sua produção é recente e apresenta grande potencial de expansão. O uso de soluções de “pulsing” e de acondicionamento, em flores de corte, é bastante empregado na floricultura para prolongar o tempo de prateleira. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a influência do “pulsing” de STS (tiossulfato de prata) e do condicionamento em soluções de sacarose na vida pós-colheita de hastes de A. ericoides. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado e os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial 2x5, ou seja, com e sem aplicação de “pulsing” com tiossulfato de prata (STS) 2mM por 30 minutos, combinados com quatro concentrações de sacarose: 5, 10, 15 e 20% por 6 horas e tratamento controle; foram 4 repetições e 10 hastes por parcela, perfazendo um total de 400 hastes. Avaliou-se diariamente a vida de vaso, acúmulo de massa fresca e conteúdo relativo de água (CRA) das hastes tratadas. Os dados de “pulsing” (STS) as médias foram comparadas pelo Teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. As médias de sacarose foram submetidas à análise de regressão polinomial a fim de verificar o comportamento das variáveis em função do aumento da concentração de sacarose e para massa fresca e CRA foi realizada regressão polinomial para cada tratamento a fim de verificar o comportamento do tratamento ao longo do tempo. Concluiu-se que tratamento de “pulsing” com tiossulfato de prata (STS) a 2mM por 30 minutos não contribuiu para o aumento da vida de vaso das hastes de áster. O tratamento de condicionamento com 10% de sacarose prolongou a vida de vaso em dois dias, diminuiu a perda de massa fresca e favoreceu o balanço hídrico de hastes de áster.

ABSTRACT: Aster (Aster ericoides L.) is a flower crop of North American origin, which belongs to the family Asteraceae. This plant presents capitulum-type inflorescences, widely used as cut flowers. In Brazil, it has been grown only recently, but still has a high expansion potential. In floriculture, pulsing and conditioning solutions are often used to extend the vase life of cut flowers. The present study aimed to evaluate the influence of silver thiosulphate (STS) pulsing and sucrose solutions on the postharvest life of A. ericoides stems. The experiment was carried out under a complete randomized design with treatments arranged in a 2x5 factorial scheme. Treatments consisted of flower stems treated with STS pulsing for 30 minutes, combined with four sucrose concentrations (5, 10, 15, and 20%) for six hours, plus a control (without treatment). Each plot contained four replicates of 10 stems, totalizing 400 stems. The following variables were daily: vase life, fresh mass, and relative water content (RWC). For pulsing data, means were compared by the Tukey’s test (p≥5%). Yet for sucrose concentrations, means were submitted to a polynomial regression to verify the behavior of variables as a function of concentrations increases. Likewise, each treatment was evaluated for fresh mass and RWC variations over time by a polynomial regression. Results indicated no effect of STS pulsing (2mM) on the vase-life length of aster stems. In contrast, the sucrose solution at 10% extended the vase life of stems by two days, decreased fresh mass loss, and helped maintain water balance in stems.

A Praça XV de Novembro, implantada em meados do século XIX, tem grande valor histórico-cultural, além de se constituir em uma das principais áreas verdes do centro da cidade de Ribeirão Preto. Visando ao conhecimento detalhado da vegetação para fins de orientação do manejo e conservação dessa área, foi feito um levantamento quali-quantitativo e fitossociológico das árvores e palmeiras da praça. Foram medidas altura e Diâmetro à Altura do Peito (DAP) e identificados todos os indivíduos de porte arbóreo (árvores e palmeiras) presentes na Praça, em nível de espécie. A praça ocupa uma área de 15.456,00 m², onde foram amostradas 42 espécies distribuídas por 19 famílias, num total de 161 indivíduos. Apesar de o local apresentar arborização com alto índice de diversidade de espécies (Shannon-Weaver de 3,14), os exemplares necessitam de maior atenção quanto a problemas ligados à fitossanidade e podas adequadas, fazendo que resulte em espaço seguro para os frequentadores e em boa qualidade paisagística.

The XV de Novembro Square was inaugurated in the middle of the nineteenth century and besides its great historical and cultural value, it is one of the largest green areas in Ribeirão Preto downtown area. The objective of this work was to quantify and qualify the arboreal vegetation composition in order to guide a direct conservation and management design. A qualitative and quantitative inventory and phytosociological survey of existing trees and palms was carried out. For this purpose, the following parameters were measured: height, DBH (diameter breast height) and all individuals identified by species level. The square occupies an area of 15,456.00 m2 where it was found 42 species distributed into 19 families, totaling 161 individuals. Although the area presents a great diversity index (Shannon-Weaver at 3,14), the local arborization need more attention regarding its phytosanitary aspects and suitable pruning which can improve the safety in the square and the landscape quality.

A espirradeira (Nerium oleander L.) é uma importante espécie arbórea ornamental, muito utilizada no meio urbano. É propagada por estacas, porém a porcentagem de enraizamento é baixa e não há estudos sobre fatores que influenciam nesse processo. Este trabalho teve, portanto, o objetivo de estudar o efeito da época de coleta e do ácido indolbutírico (AIB) no enraizamento de estacas de duas variedades de espirradeira (Nerium oleander L.), determinadas pela coloração das flores (rosa e branca). O experimento foi instalado na UNESP, Campus de Jaboticabal/SP, no verão e no inverno. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 x 4 (duas variedades combinadas com duas estações do ano e quatro concentrações de AIB - 0, 1.000, 2.000 e 4.000 mg kg-1). As avaliações foram realizadas 60 dias após a estaquia, sendo estas as variáveis: porcentagem de enraizamento, número médio, comprimento e massa de matéria seca de raízes. Concluiu-se que o enraizamento de ambas as variedades de espirradeira (rosa e branca) foi superior no verão. A variedade de flores rosas apresentou maior número e comprimento médio de raízes no verão, porém as maiores porcentagens de enraizamento e massa de matéria seca de raízes foram encontradas no inverno. O ácido indolbutírico foi efetivo para aumentar a porcentagem de enraizamento nas concentrações testadas de 1.000 e 2.000 mg kg-1; maior número, comprimento e massa de matéria seca de raízes foram obtidos na concentração de 2.000 mg kg-1.

Nerium oleander plants are important ornamental trees, much cultivated in urban centers. This species is propagated by cuttings, but rooting percentage is very low and there are no studies on the factors that influence this process. Therefore, the objective of this work was to study the effect of the harvesting time and the indolebutyric acid (IBA) on the rooting of cuttings of two Nerium oleander varieties, determined by flower color (pink and white). The experiments were conducted at UNESP, Campus of Jaboticabal, São Paulo State, Brazil, during summer and winter. The experimental design was in randomized blocks and the treatments were organized in a 2 x 2 x 4 factorial arrangement (two varieties, two harvesting times and four IBA concentrations - 0, 1000, 2000 and 4000 mg kg-1). The evaluations were done 60 days after the cuttings, and the following variables were observed: percentage of rooting, mean root number, mean root length and mean root dry mass. Rooting of the two varieties was higher in summer (97%) when compared to winter (77% and 56% respectively for the pink variety showed higher rooting percentage and root dry mass in winter and higher number and length of roots in summer; the indolebutyric acid concentrations of 1000 and 2000 mg kg-1 increased the rooting percentage, and the 2000 mg kg-1 one increased root number, root length and root dry mass.

Dois antagonistas selecionados para o biocontrole da vassoura-de-bruxa do cacaueiro foram avaliados quanto à capacidade em ativar mecanismos de defesa de plantas contra patógenos. Para tanto, mudas seminais de cacaueiro "comum" foram cultivadas em casa-de-vegetação por 30 dias e expostas aos antagonistas aplicados a mudas de cacaueiro por atomização, individualmente e em associação. O primeiro par de folhas das mudas dos diferentes tratamentos foi coletado aos dois, quatro, 12 e 24 dias após a exposição aos antagonistas. Foi quantificada a atividade de peroxidases, polifenoloxidases, quitinases e beta-1,3-glucanases no material coletado. Observou-se um aumento na atividade de peroxidases e polifenoloxidases nos primeiros dias após a exposição das mudas, especialmente ao isolado Ac26. Não foi observado efeito aditivo ou sinergístico nas mudas expostas aos dois isolados simultaneamente.

Two antagonists selected for the biocontrol of cocoa witches' broom were investigated for their ability in triggering increases in the activity of enzymes associated to induced resistance. In a greenhouse, thirty days old cocoa seedlings were exposed t antagonists by spraying a propagule suspension of every antagonist or a mixture of them. At two, four 12 and 24 days exposing plants to the antagonists, the first leaf pair of every plant was excised and used for quantifying the activity of peroxidases, poly-phenol-oxidases, chitinases and beta-1,3-glucanases. There were increases in activity of peroxidases, poly-phenol-oxidases, mainly in the case of isolate Ac26. Additive or synergistic effects were not observed as a consequence of exposing plants to both antagonists together.
