A espectroscopia de emissão foi utilizada na determinação da temperatura de chamas pré-misturadas de GLP. Investigou-se a emissão natural de radicais CH* em três diferentes condições de queima: razão estequiométrica de combustível/oxidante, excesso de combustível (chama rica) e excesso de oxidante (chama pobre). O valor médio obtido para a temperatura rotacional de CH* foi de 2845 ± 70 K nas condições utilizadas nos experimentos. Esse valor não variou significativamente com os demais tipos de chama e é compatível com os cálculos de temperatura adiabática dos sistemas estudados. Essa temperatura também é concordante com resultados obtidos por via indireta, utilizando-se o método de linha reversa de sódio, que consiste em uma técnica bem estabelecida e independente da emissão natural. Temperaturas vibracionais de ca. 4600 K foram calculadas, indicando que o tempo de vida do CH* não é suficiente para que o equilíbrio entre os modos rotacionais e vibracionais seja estabelecido.

Emission spectroscopy was used in the temperature determination of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) premixed flames. Natural emission of CH* radicals was investigated in flames under three different burning conditions: fuel/oxydizer stoichiometric ratio, fuel excess (rich flame), and oxidizer excess (lean flame). An average value of 2845 ± 70 K was obtained for CH* rotational temperature in the set up used in the experiments. This value did not show significant change with the type of flame analyzed and it is compatible with the calculated adiabatic flame temperatures of the investigated systems. This temperature value also agrees with that determined by an indirect measurement, using the sodium line reversal method, which is independent from the radical natural emission and well established in literature. Vibrational temperatures of ca. 4600 K were calculated, indicating that the CH* lifetime is insufficient for the establishment of an equilibrium state between the rotational and vibrational modes.

Uma modelagem cinética foi avaliada para reproduzir a quimiluminescência experimental dos radicais excitados OH*, CHO*, CH* e C2* formados na combustão de C2H2/O2 em uma câmara fechada. Um mecanismo reacional com 37 espécies e 106 reações elementares foi validado para a combustão de C2H2/O2 com fi=1.00 e fi=1.62, através das medidas de quimiluminescência. Para isso foram incluídas reações de formação e de decaimento dos radicais excitados. As simulações foram realizadas com o pacote KINAL; o programa DIFF foi utilizado para resolver as equações diferenciais ordinárias e o programa ROPA para realizar a análise das velocidades de produção. Houve uma boa concordância entre os perfis de quimiluminescência experimental e simulado de todos os radicais e para ambas reações. Os resultados mostraram que o CH tem um papel central na formação dos radicais. As reações: H + O2 = OH* + O; CH + O = CHO*; C2H + O2 = CH* + CO2 e CH2 + C = C2* + H2 são as principais rotas reacionais para reproduzir os perfis experimentais.

Kinetic modeling to reproduce the experimental chemiluminescence of OH*, CHO*, CH* and C2* excited radicals formed in C2H2/O2 combustion in a closed chamber was evaluated. A reaction mechanism with 37 species and 106 elementary reactions for C2H2/O2 combustion at phi=1.00 and phi=1.62 was validated through chemiluminescence measurements, where formation and decay reactions of excited radicals are included. KINAL package was used for simulations. Ordinary differential equations were solved by the DIFF program and production rate analysis were acquired by the ROPA program. There was good agreement between experimental and simulated chemiluminescence profiles of all radicals for both combustions. The results showed CH has a meaningful role in the production of excited radicals. Reactions: H + O2 = OH* + O; CH + O = CHO*; C2H + O2 = CH* + CO2 and CH2 + C = C2* + H2 were the main reactions paths used to reproduce the experimental profiles.

Este trabalho relata o efeito do pH no processo de formação de mulita a partir de misturas de sóis de alumina e sílica. O pH das misturas determina as cargas das superfícies das partículas e afeta suas interações e distribuições. A formação de mulita a partir de precursores amorfos na razão molar de 1:3, preparados pela mistura dos sóis, não foi afetada pelo pH. Neste caso, a concentração excessiva de sílica determinou sua distribuição ao redor da alumina, o que levou à formação de mulita tetragonal, conforme o mecanismo de Sundaresan e Aksay. Entretanto, para a formação de mulita a partir de precursores com Al:Si = 3:1, o pH desempenhou um papel muito importante nas interações entre partículas de alumina e de sílica, bem como nas espécies predominantes de alumínio. Em pH 1, íons Al3+ octaedricamente coordenados predominaram no sol de alumina enquanto que íons Al3+ tetraedricamente coordenados predominaram no sol a pH ~6. As interações entre as partículas de sílica e de alumina e suas distribuições nesses precursores determinaram a temperatura mínima de formação de mulita ortorrômbica.

This work reports the effect of pH on the process of mullite formation from mixtures of alumina and silica sols. The pH of the mixtures determines the charges of particle surfaces and affects their interactions and distributions. Mullite formation from amorphous precursors with an Al:Si molar ratio of 1:3, prepared from the sols mixture, was not affected by pH. In this case, the higher concentration of silica determined its distribution around alumina, which led to tetragonal mullite formation, according to the Sundaresan and Aksay mechanism. However, for mullite formation from precursors with Al:Si = 3:1, the pH played an important role on the interactions between alumina and silica particles, as well as on the predominant aluminum species. At pH 1, octahedrically coordinated Al3+ ions predominated in the alumina sol while tetrahedrically coordinated Al3+ ions predominated in the sol at pH ~6. The interactions between silica and alumina particles and their distributions in these precursors determined the minimum temperature required for orthorhombic mullite formation.

Neste trabalho, realizou-se o estudo dos materiais particulados emitidos na combustão de óleo residual do tipo 4B e na requeima de gás natural aplicada à combustão deste óleo numa fornalha em escala piloto. Os tamanhos, as morfologias e a distribuição dos elementos inorgânicos nas partículas foram analisados por microscopia eletrônica de varredura acoplado a um espectrômetro de energia dispersiva de raio-X (EDS). Foram observados três tipos de partículas: cenosferas esféricas, compactas e lisas de 0,6 a 1,5 mim; cenosferas com poucos poros de aproximadamente 10-20 mim e cenosferas porosas na faixa de 20-50 mim. O particulado emitido na combustão de óleo residual apresenta predominantemente as pequenas cenosferas compactas e lisas, enquanto que o emitido no processo de requeima mostra preferencialmente as cenosferas maiores e porosas. As microanálises de EDS mostraram principalmente Al e Si nas partículas menores e S e V nas cenosferas com poucos poros e nas cenosferas porosas e maiores.

In this work, a study of the particulate matter emitted from standard residual oil combustion and from natural gas reburning during oil combustion in a pilot scale furnace was carried out. The sizes, morphologies and chemical element distribution of particles were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy coupled to an X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The microscopy results show three sorts of particles: spherical, very compact and smooth cenospheres with sizes of 0.6-1.5 mum; cenospheres with a few pores with sizes of 10-20 mum and larger porous cenospheres with sizes of 20-50 mum. The particulate emitted from standard oil combustion shows predominantly spherical and very compact small cenospheres, with a smooth surface, while those emitted from the reburning process present a majority of larger porous cenospheres. The EDS microanalysis showed mainly Al and Si in the smaller cenospheres and mostly S and V in the cenospheres with a few pores and in the larger porous cenospheres.

Neste trabalho, realizou-se um estudo da formação de partículas de fuligem durante a combustão de misturas de C2H2/O2 em diferentes razões C/O. A evolução temporal e a fração de volume das partículas de fuligem foram obtidas através da extinção de um feixe de laser. Constatou-se que o tempo total de formação da fuligem nas chamas de C2H2/O2 com razão C/O > 0.75 ou de C2H2/O2/Ar com razão C/O = 1.00 é de cerca de 3.0-4.0 ms, após o início da reação. O máximo de emissão dos radicais excitados e o máximo da pressão nestas reações, ocorrem praticamente neste mesmo intervalo de tempo. Observou-se a formação de partículas de fuligem compactas e aproximadamente esféricas com 60-150 nm de diâmetro. Entretanto, os agregados não são compactos e mostram uma estrutura de rede que se assemelha a de um aerogel.

An experimental study of soot formation in C2H2/O2 flames at different C/O ratios in a closed chamber was carried out. The evolution temporal behavior and the volume fraction of soot particles were determined by laser extinction. It was found that total time for the soot formation phenomenon in flames from C2H2/O2 with C/O ratio > 0.75 or C2H2/O2/Ar with C/O ratio = 1.00 was around 3.0-4.0 ms after ignition. At almost the same time the excited radicals reached their maximum emission intensity and the gases under combustion reached their maximum pressure. The micrographs show compact and approximately spherical soot particles with diameters within 60-150 nm. However, soot aggregates are not compact and they present a netlike structure similar to that of an aerogel.

Simulações de Monte Carlo foram realizadas para soluções aquosas concentradas de uréia nas concentrações de 4, 5, 6, 7 e 8 mol L-1 no ensemble NpT a 298 K e 1 atm. As superfícies de energia potencial foram representadas pela soma dos potenciais clássicos de Coulomb e de Lennard-Jones, nos quais a aditividade de pares foi considerada. Nas simulações a água foi descrita pelo modelo TIP4P e a uréia por dois modelos: o modelo OPLS planar e um modelo no qual a molécula de uréia não é totalmente planar. Os resultados das simulações para os dois modelos mostraram que a uréia não causa perturbações significativas na estrutura da água, na faixa de concentrações estudadas. No entanto, foi observada diminuição do número médio de ligações de hidrogênio entre as moléculas de água. Para as soluções mais concentradas os resultados obtidos com o modelo OPLS sugerem a formação de dímeros de uréia. Observou-se similaridade entre alguns dos resultados das simulações obtidos com os modelos: OPLS planar e não-planar da uréia , nas mesmas concentrações e condições.

Monte Carlo simulations were carried out for concentrated aqueous urea solutions at 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 mol L-1 in the NpT ensemble at 298 K and 1 atm. The potential energy surfaces were represented by the sum of Coulomb and Lennard-Jones potentials in which pair-wise additivity was considered. Water was described by the TIP4P model, while urea was described by the OPLS planar model and also by a proposed non-planar model. The simulation results for both urea models showed that urea does not induce any significant changes in the structure of water over all the concentrations studied. However, it was noted that the number of hydrogen bonds between the water molecules decrease as the concentration increases. The simulation results of the OPLS planar model suggest the formation of urea dimers in the more concentrated solutions. The simulations with the non-planar model showed several features similar to those of the OPLS planar model.

The need for new materials to substitute injured or damaged parts of the human body has led scientists of different areas to the investigation of bioceramics since the 70's, when other materials in use started to show implantation problems. Bioceramics show some advantages like being the material that best mimics the bone tissue but also, present low mechanical strength due to its ceramic nature. This paper presents a general view about the topic.
