Resumo É necessário esclarecer se a maturação biológica e o desempenho no atletismo podem modular a PSE da sessão. O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar se a maturidade biológica e o desempenho específico no atletismo podem estar associados à carga de treinamento (método de PSE da sessão). Setenta e cinco jovens atletas (13-15 anos) de ambos os sexos participaram do presente estudo. O protocolo experimental durou sete dias consecutivos. Testes de desempenho (75 m de corrida, salto em distância, 250 m de corrida, arremesso de peso e 1000 m de corrida) foram feitos no primeiro dia. Após 48 horas, cinco dias de treinamento de atletismo foram prescritos, cada dia representa um treinamento de cada teste de desempenho. Todas as sessões de treinamento tiveram a mesma duração (120 min). O valor da carga de treinamento foi obtido multiplicando o valor do PSE com a duração da sessão de treinamento (em minutos). Para as meninas, a carga de treinamento de 250 m foi correlacionada com a maturidade biológica (r = -0,36, p = 0,02, n = 37) e desempenho específico (r = 0,33, p = 0,04, n = 37). Todas as outras análises indicam que a maturidade biológica e o desempenho específico no atletismo não influenciam a carga de treinamento com base no método da PSE da sessão. A carga de treinamento com base na PSE da sessão não é influenciada pela maturidade biológica e desempenho específico no atletismo, portanto, pode ser usada para controlar a carga de treinamento de jovens atletas de atletismo. Para as meninas é necessário cuidado para controlar a intensidade das sessões de treino de 250m de corrida.

Abstract It is necessary to clarify if BM and track and field performance can modulate the perception about RPE-session. The purpose of the present study was to verify if biological maturity and track and field-specific performance can be associated with training load (RPE-session method). Seventy-five young athletes (13-15 years old) of both genders participated in the present study. The experimental protocol lasted seven consecutive days. Performance tests (75-m running, long jump, 250-m running, shot put and 1000-m running) were made on the first day. After 48 hours, five days of track and field training it was prescribed, each day represents a training of each performance test. All training sessions had the same duration (120 min). The value of the training load was obtained multiplying the RPE value with training session duration (in minutes). For girls, the training load of 250-m training was correlated with biological maturity (r = -0.36, p = 0.02, n = 37) and specific performance (r = 0.33, p = 0.04, n = 37). All other analyzes indicate that biological maturity and track and field-specific performance do not influence the training load based on RPE-session method. Training load based on RPE-session is not influenced by biological maturity and track and field-specific performance, therefore can be used to control the training load of young track and field athletes. To girls it is necessary a care to control the training sessions intensity of 250-m running.

Abstract Aim: To verify the on and off heart rate (HR) and HR variability (HRV) kinetics during a high-load aerobic exercise and a low-load aerobic exercise, with and without blood flow restriction (BFR). Methods: Fourteen healthy male subjects performed three randomly assigned experimental sessions: 1) 10 minutes walking at 40% of maximal aerobic speed (MAS) (40LL); 2) 10 minutes walking at 40% of MAS with BFR (40LL+BFR); and 3) 10 minutes running at 70% of MAS (70HL). The HR and HRV measurements were taken at rest, during exercise and the recovery period after constant load sessions. Results: The HR on- and off- kinetics, and HRV on-kinetics were faster in 40LL than in 40LL +BFR and 70HL (p < 0.05). The time constant (τon) of HR on-kinetics was faster in 40LL+BFR than in 70HL (23.4 ± 9.5 s vs 42 ± 9.5 s, respectively, p < 0.01), and was accompanied by faster HRV on-kinetics (12.4 ± 9.6 s vs 20.3 ± 13.7 s, respectively, p < 0.01). Although HR off-kinetics was not different between 40LL+BFR and 70HL, the recovery of time and frequency HRV indices were delayed in 70HL when compared to 40LL and 40LL+BFR (p < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings indicate that 40LL promoted faster cardiac adjustments compared to 40LL+BFR and 70HL sessions. Additionally, 40LL+BFR promoted faster cardiac adjustment and better HRV recovery compared to the 70HL session.

Abstract AIMS The purpose of present study was verify if the RPE-training session differs between females and males during the track and field training and if biological maturity (BM) has interference on this response. METHODS Seventy-five athletes (13-15 years old) have participated of study, with 38 male 37 female. Five training sessions of track and field were prescribe and monitoring by RPE-training session (intensity) and Total Quality Recovery (TQR) (recovery). RESULTS There was no statistical difference between males and females on 75-meters run, long jump and shot put. Otherwise, for training of 250 and 1000-meters females related higher RPE-values than males 3.68 ± 0.79, 3.26 ± 0.56, p < 0.01 and 4.14 ± 0.94, 3.72 ± 0.89, p < 0.05; respectively. Even when controlling the effect of biological maturity the same results were observed to 250-meters F1,73 = 2.060; p = 0.002 and 1000-meters F1,73 = 0.997; p = 0.036. There was no difference for TQR between genders. CONCLUSION The comparison the RPE-training session of females and males indicated there were difference to 250 and 1000-m training sessions, females have more RPE-training sessions than males. Additionally, there were no differences between genders for recovery parameters, even controlling BM.

ABSTRACT Aim The study aimed to verify the effect of carbohydrate (CHO) mouth rinse on time to exhaustion, energy systems contribution and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during a high-intensity exercise. Methods Fourteen men performed an incremental exercise test to determine their maximal oxygen uptake and peak power output (PPO) and two time-to-exhaustion tests at 110% of PPO. Participants rinsed their mouth with 25ml of 6.4% of CHO or placebo (PLA) solution immediately before the time-to-exhaustion test, using a crossover design. The contribution of the energy systems was calculated using the free software GEDAE-LaB®. Results Time to exhaustion was similar between the conditions (CHO:174.3±42.8s; PLA:166.7±26.3s; p=0.33). In addition, there was no difference between the CHO and PLA condition for aerobic (CHO:135.1±41.2kJ and PLA:129.8±35.3kJ, p=0.34), anaerobic lactic (CHO:57.6±17.1kJ and PLA:53.4±15.1kJ, p=0.10), and anaerobic alactic (CHO:10.4±8.4kJ and PLA:13.2±9.2kJ, p=0.37) contribution. Consequently, total energy expenditure was similar between conditions (CHO:203.2±46.4kJ and PLA:196.5±45.2kJ, p=0.15). However, CHO mouth rinse reduced the RPE at the moment of exhaustion (CHO:18.2±1.0units and PLA:19.1±1.1units; p=0.02). Conclusion CHO mouth rinse neither increased time to exhaustion nor altered energy systems contribution during a high-intensity exercise, but reduced the perceived effort at the exhaustion.

Resumo O presente estudo teve como objetivo verificar se a incidência do platô está relacionada com a capacidade anaeróbia. Para tanto, nove indivíduos fisicamente ativos (idade: 23 ± 4 anos; massa corporal: 72,4 ± 8,2 kg; estatura: 176,4 ± 6,8 cm; VO2max: 41,3 ± 5,7 ml.kg-1.min-1) participaram do presente estudo. Eles foram submetidos aos seguintes testes, realizados em cicloergômetro: a) um teste incremental máximo para a determinação do VO2max; b) seis testes submáximos para determinar a demanda supramáxima de O2; c) um teste supramáximo para a determinação do déficit máximo acumulado de oxigênio (MAOD). O platô foi caracterizado quando a diferença do VO2 entre os dois últimos estágios do teste incremental foi ≤ 2,1 ml.kg-1.min-1. Foi observada uma correlação inversa, porém não significante, entre e o MAOD e o platô do VO2 (r = -0,61; p > 0,05). Dessa forma, parece que a capacidade anaeróbia não é fator decisivo para determinar a incidência de platô no VO2 em indivíduos fisicamente ativos.

Abstract The present study aimed to verify if the incidence of plateau is associated with anaerobic capacity. Therefore, nine physically active male (age: 23 ± 4 yr; body mass: 72.4 ± 8.2 kg; height: 176.4 ± 6.8 cm; VO2max: 41.3 ± 5.7 ml.kg-1.min-1) participated in the present study. The subjects in a cycle ergometer the following tests: a) maximum incremental test to determination of VO2max; b) six submaximal tests for determination of supra maximum demand of O2; c) supra maximum test for maximum accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) determination. The plateau was identified when the difference in the VO2 in the last two stages of incremental test was ≤ 2.1 ml.kg-1.min-1. It was observed an inverse correlation, although no significant, between MAOD and VO2 plateau (r = -0,61; p > 0,05). Thus, it appears that anaerobic capacity is not a decisive factor for determining the incidence of VO2 plateau in physically active individuals.

RESUMO Nosso objetivo foi analisar a estratégia de prova adotada em patinação de velocidade de média distância e a influência do gênero e o nível de desempenho das provas sobre a estratégia. Foram incluídas provas masculinas e femininas de cinco etapas da Copa do Mundo realizada na temporada 2009/2010. Em ambos os gêneros, as provas foram classificadas como alto (AD) e baixo (BD). A estratégia adotada foi similar entre os gêneros, com os atletas masculinos sendo mais rápidos durante toda a prova (P < 0,05). As provas de AD foram mais agressivas em todas as parciais comparadas às provas de BD (P < 0,05), independente do gênero. Embora o desempenho seja diferente entre os gêneros, a estratégia adotada foi similar entre eles nas provas mais rápidas e mais lentas, sugerindo que a técnica de movimento em atletas de elite parece ser um fator determinante na escolha da estratégia adotada.

ABSTRACT Our aim was to analyze the pacing strategy adopted during middle-distance speed skating and to verify the influence of gender and race's performance level on pacing adopted. The races of male and female athletes during five stages of a World Cup, season 2009/2010, were included in the study. In both genders, the races were classified as high (HP) and low (LP) performance. The pacing adopted was similar between genders, with male athletes being faster throughout the race (P < 0.05). In both genders, the HP races were more aggressive in all intervals compared to LP races (P < 0.05), regardless of gender. Although performance is different between genders, the pacing adopted was similar between them in faster and slower races, suggesting that the technical in elite athletes seems to be a determinant factor in choice of adopted pacing strategy.

O objetivo do estudo foi verificar as modificações na estratégia de prova frente às alterações do risco de fadiga prematura e da percepção subjetiva de esforço (PSE) em corredores durante uma corrida de 10 km. Participaram do estudo 55 corredores com tempo nos 10 km de 41:39 ± 3:52 min:s. A estratégia de prova e a PSE foram avaliadas a cada quilômetro. O risco de fadiga prematura foi determinado pelo produto entre a PSE e a distância restante de prova e a estratégia de prova foi determinada pela curva da velocidade e distância. A ANOVA de um caminho para medidas repetidas foi utilizada para determinar as diferenças na velocidade, PSE e risco de fadiga a cada quilômetro e entre a velocidade a cada quilômetro e a velocidade média da prova. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson foi calculado entre a PSE e o risco de fadiga prematura com a velocidade. A velocidade do primeiro quilômetro foi 8,1% maior do que a média (p ≤ 0,001). A velocidade diminuiu gradualmente ao longo da prova, ocorrendo um novo aumento no décimo quilômetro. A PSE aumentou linearmente ao longo da prova e o risco de fadiga diminuiu significantemente após o terceiro quilômetro. Houve forte correlação negativa entre a PSE e a velocidade desenvolvida durante a prova (r = -0,80; p = 0,006). Foi observada uma correlação moderada negativa entre o risco de fadiga prematura e a velocidade (r = -0,57; p = 0,04). Com isso, os achados do presente estudo sugerem que a PSE parece ter importante papel sobre os ajustes da velocidade ao longo da prova, sendo que o aumento da velocidade observado no último quilômetro pode estar associado ao baixo risco de fadiga prematura.

The aim of the study was to verify the modifications on pacing strategy induced by the hazard score of premature fatigue and rated perceived exertion (RPE) in amateur runners during a simulated 10-km running. Fifty five amateur runners with the 10-km run time of 41:39 ± 3:52 min:s participated in the study. The pacing strategy and the RPE were analyzed each kilometer. The hazard score of premature fatigue was expressed as the product of RPE by the remaining distance of the running. An ANOVA one-way for repeated measures was applied to determine possible statistical differences in speed, RPE and hazard score at each kilometer or the running speed differences at each kilometer and the average running speed. Pearson's product moment correlations were calculated between RPE and hazard of premature fatigue and running speed. The speed in the first kilometer was 8.1% higher than the average speed (p ≤ 0.001). There was a progressive decrease in speed during the running with an increment near the last kilometer. The RPE increased linearly until the end of the running and the hazard score of premature fatigue significantly decreased after the third kilometer. During the running there was a strong negative correlation between speed and RPE (r = -0.80; p = 0.006). It was also observed a moderate negative correlation between speed and hazard score of premature fatigue (r = -0.57; p = 0.04). Thus, our results suggested the important role of RPE on speed adjustment during a 10-km running and the increase of running speed near the end of the race seems to be associated to the lower score of hazard of premature fatigue.

O presente estudo analisou o efeito do alongamento estático sobre o desempenho no salto em profundidade. Adicionalmente, foi investigada a redução na altura de queda poderia compensar as alterações causadas pelo alongamento prévio. Dez homens fisicamente ativos realizaram o salto em profundidade em quatro alturas de queda diferentes sem alongamento estático prévio, para determinação da altura de queda ideal, em duas alturas com o alongamento prévio. A altura de salto, o tempo de contato e o índice de força reativa foram significativamente afetados pelo alongamento estático. Contudo, apenas o tempo de contato foi significativamente melhorado com a redução na altura de queda do salto após o alongamento. Nossos resultados sugerem que a diminuição no desempenho após o alongamento pode ser parcialmente compensada com uma redução na altura de queda, diminuindo o tempo de contato para valores próximos ao salto sem alongamento prévio. Isso pode ser explicado pelo menor velocidade de aterrissagem e, possivelmente, pela menor redução na ativação dos músculos flexores plantares. Assim, a diminuição na altura de queda parece ser interessante após a realização do alongamento estático, visando submeter os atletas a menores forças de impacto e manter o desempenho do salto.

This study analyzed the effect of static stretching on performance during drop jumps. Furthermore, we investigated if a reduction in drop height would compensate the stretching-caused alterations. Ten physically active male subjects performed drop jumps at four different drop heights without static stretching for the optimal drop height determination. After, they performed drop jumps on two drop heights with static stretching previously. The jump height, contact time and reactive strength index were significantly affected by static stretching. However, only the contact time was significantly improved by the reduction in drop height with previous static stretching. Our results suggest that the decrement in performance after static stretching could be partially compensated by a reduction in drop height, which decreases the contact time near a non-stretching jump condition. This can be explained by the lower landing velocity and, possibly, the smaller reduction in the activation of the plantar flexors muscles. In conclusion, the reduction in drop height seems to be interesting after a static stretching session, aiming to expose the athletes to lower impact forces to maintain jump performance.

En este estudio se analizó el efecto del estiramiento estático sobre el rendimiento en saltos en profundidad. Además, se investigó si una reducción de la altura de caída compensaría las alteraciones causadas por el estiramiento previo. Diez hombres físicamente activos realizaron el salto en profundidad en cuatro alturas diferentes de caída sin estiramiento estático, para la determinación de la altura de caída óptima y en dos alturas con el estiramiento estático previo. La altura del salto, el tiempo de contacto y el índice de fuerza reactiva fueron afectados significativamente por el estiramiento estático. Sin embargo, sólo el tiempo de contacto mejoró significativamente por la reducción de la altura de caída del salto, después del estiramiento. Nuestros resultados sugieren quela disminución en el rendimiento después del estiramiento estático, podría ser parcialmente compensada con una reducción en la altura de caída, disminuyendo el tiempo de contacto para valores próximos al del salto sin estiramiento previo. Esto se puede explicar por la menor velocidad de aterrizaje y, posiblemente, por la menor reducción en la activación de los músculos flexores plantares. En conclusión, la reducción de la altura de caída parece ser interesante después de realizar una sesión de estiramientos estáticos, con el objetivo de someter a los atletas a menores fuerzas de impacto y mantener el rendimiento en el salto.

Tem sido sugerido que a participação do metabolismo anaeróbio alático (MAA) pode ser estimada a partir do cálculo da fase rápida do excesso do consumo de oxigênio após o exercício (EPOC RÁPIDO). Considerando que o Déficit Máximo Acumulado de Oxigênio (MAOD) representa a quantidade total de energia transferida pelos metabolismos anaeróbios, o objetivo desse estudo foi analisar se o método de subtrair o EPOC RÁPIDO do MAOD (MAOD LA-1) proporciona uma estimativa satisfatória do metabolismo anaeróbio lático (MAL). Para esse fim, o MAOD LA-1 foi comparado ao método capaz de expressar em equivalente de oxigênio a energia oriunda do acúmulo de lactato no sangue (MAOD LA-2). Nove homens adultos ativos foram submetidos a quatro sessões experimentais: 1) um teste progressivo até a exaustão em um cicloergômetro para a mensuração do consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max) e da potência externa correspondente ao VO2max (WVO2max); 2 e 3) seis testes de cargas constantes (3 testes por sessão) com intensidades abaixo da WVO2max; 4) um teste de carga constante com a intensidade equivalente a 110% da WVO2max. O principal achado foi que os dois métodos (MAOD LA-1 e MAOD LA-2) empregados na estimativa da contribuição do MAL no MAOD geraram valores estatisticamente similares (p > 0,05). Além disso, os valores percentuais do MAOD LA-1 (representando o MAL) e do EPOC RÁPIDO (representando o MAA) foram de aproximadamente 78% e 22%, respectivamente. Logo, os procedimentos propostos na presente investigação podem auxiliar futuros trabalhos que porventura objetivem fragmentar as contribuições dos componentes anaeróbio do MAOD.

It has been suggested that the participation of alactic anaerobic metabolism (AAM) in physical activity can be estimated by calculating the fast component of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC FAST). Considering that maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) represents the total amount of energy transferred by anaerobic metabolisms, this study aimed to analyze whether subtracting EPOC FAST from MAOD (MAOD LA-1) provides a satisfactory estimate of lactic anaerobic metabolism (LAM). For this purpose, MAOD LA-1 was compared with the method by which the energy derived from blood lactate accumulation (MAOD LA-2) is expressed as oxygen equivalent. Nine active adult men were submitted to four experimental sessions: 1) a maximal incremental exercise test until exhaustion on a cycle ergometer to measure the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and the external power corresponding to VO2max (WVO2max); 2) and 3) six constant-workload tests (3 per session) at intensities below WVO2max; 4) one constant-workload test at an intensity corresponding to 110% of WVO2max. The main finding was that both methods (MAOD LA-1 e MAOD LA-2) that were used to estimate the contribution of LAM in MAOD resulted in similar statistical values (p > 0.05). In addition, percentage values of MAOD LA-1 (representing MAL) and EPOC FAST (representing AAM) were approximately 78 and 22%, respectively. Em competições de natação de longa distância não está bem estabelecida qual a estratégia de prova (EP) ótima. Desta forma, o objetivo desse estudo foi caracterizar as EP adotadas por atletas de nível internacional em provas de natação de 800m (feminino) e 1500m (masculino) crawl. Foram analisadas as parciais de tempo (a cada 50m) dos atletas (n = 60) participantes das semifinais e finais dos últimos três campeonatos mundiais de natação, ocorridos no período de 2006 a 2010. A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio do teste estatístico CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection), que é uma estatística χ2 (qui-quadrado) para detectar comportamento de homogeneidade entre as variáveis. Os principais resultados encontrados foram: para as duas provas analisadas, o comportamento da velocidade em função do tempo mostrou-se semelhante à estratégia parabólica (formato em U), caracterizada por um início significativamente mais rápido (P < 0,05), seguido por uma diminuição do ritmo no trecho médio da prova, quando ocorre um novo aumento significativo (P < 0,05) na velocidade no trecho final. Desta forma, tais achados indicam que este perfil de EP pode ser classificado como ótimo para as provas de natação consideradas de longa duração, visto que foi o perfil preferencialmente adotado por atletas de nível mundial.

In long distance swimming competitions, the optimal pacing strategy is not well established. The objective of this study was to characterize the pacing strategy adopted by international level athletes in 800-m (female) and 1500-m (male) crawl swimming events. We analyzed the time of each 50 m splits for semi-finalists and finalists athletes of the last three world swimming championships from 2006 to 2010. The data analysis was performed through the statistic method named CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection), which is a statistic χ2 to detect a homogeneity behavior among the variables. The main results found were: for the two events analyzed, the velocity-versus-distance curve was similar to the parabolic pacing strategy (U-shaped), characterized by a significantly faster start (p<0.05) than mean velocity for the race, followed by a gradual decline in velocity in the middle splits, when athletes increase the velocity again (p<0.05) to produce an end spurt. In conclusion, these findings indicate that this pacing strategy profile can be classified as optimal for the long distance swimming events since it was preferentially adopted by international level athletes.

O objetivo do estudo foi estimar as contribuições do metabolismo anaeróbio lático (MAL) e alático (MAA) em intensidades abaixo do consumo máximo de oxigênio (VO2max). Dez homens (23 ± 4 anos, 176,4 ± 6,8 cm, 72,4 ± 8,2 kg, 12,0 ± 4,5 % de gordura corporal) realizaram um teste progressivo até a exaustão voluntária para identificação do VO2max, da potência correspondente ao VO2max (WVO2max) e do segundo limiar ventilatório (LV2). Na segunda e na terceira visita foram realizados seis testes de cargas constantes (três testes por sessão) com intensidades abaixo do VO2max. Houve uma predominância do MAL sobre o MAA durante os exercícios submáximos a partir da intensidade correspondente ao LV2, sendo significativamente maior em 90% VO2max (p < 0,05). Dessa forma, esses resultados podem auxiliar treinadores a aplicarem cargas de treinamento adequadas aos seus atletas, de acordo com a exigência metabólica da competição.

The purpose this study was that estimated contributions of the anaerobic lactic (MAL) and alactic (MAA) metabolism during constant load exercises at intensities below the maximal oxygen capacity uptake (VO2max). Ten males (23 ± 4 years, 176.4 ± 6.8 cm, 72.4 ± 8.2 kg, 12.0 ± 4.5 % of fat body) performed in the first visit a progressive test until exhaustion to identification of VO2max, power output corresponding to the VO2max (WVO2max) and second ventilatory threshold (LV2). On the second and third visit, the participants performed six constant workload tests (3 per session) with intensities below VO2max. There was a predominance of MAL about MAA during the exercises sub-maximal from intensity corresponding to the LV2, being significantly higher at 90% VO2max (p < 0.05). Thus, these results may help coaches to implement training loads appropriate to their athletes, according to the metabolic demand of the competition.

Esse trabalho comparou a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) de repouso antes e após 10 semanas de treinamento de força de grupos que usaram e não usaram a plataforma vibratória. Dezessete homens saudáveis foram divididos nos grupos treinamento de força convencional (TF) ou treinamento de força sobre a plataforma vibratória a frequência de 30 Hz (TF+V30). As mensurações do desempenho de força dinâmica máxima (1-RM) no exercício meio agachamento e da VFC de repouso foram feitas antes e após o programa de treinamento. Ambos os grupos tiveram aumento significante da força no período pós (de 15,1% no grupo TF e de 16,4% no grupo TF+V30), no entanto esse aumento se alterou na mesma magnitude para os dois grupos, não havendo diferença entre eles no desempenho de 1-RM nos períodos pré e pós-treinamento. Não foi observada diferença nas comparações entre os grupos e nas situações pré e pós-treinamento nas análises da VFC de repouso, no entanto a magnitude do effect size foi moderada (ES = 0,50-0,80) para algumas variáveis (intervalo R-R, desvio-padrão da média de todos os intervalos R-R - SDNN, raiz quadrada da média dos quadrados das diferenças entre os intervalos R-R sucessivos - RMSSD, componente de baixa frequência ajustada por meio de logarítmico - InLF e componente de alta frequência ajustada por meio de logarítmico - InHF) no grupo TF+V30 após o período de treinamento. Conclui-se que 10 semanas de treinamento de força com e sem a presença da vibração proporcionou aumento semelhante no desempenho de 1-RM em ambos os grupos e, embora o estímulo adicional da vibração tenha dado indícios de maior atividade vagal analisado por meio do ES, nenhum dos grupos apresentou alteração significante da VFC.

The current research compared resting heart rate variability (VFC) before and after 10 weeks of strength training in groups that used and did not use a vibration platform. Seventeen healthy men were divided into conventional strength training (TF) or strength training using a vibration platform with a frequency of 30 Hz (TF+V30) training groups. One repetition maximum load (1-RM) on half squat exercise and VFC measurements were determined pre- and post-training program. Both groups had improved 1-RM load after the program (15.1% in TF group and 16.4% in TF+V30 group), although this increase was changed in the same extent for the two groups and there was no difference in 1-RM load between groups pre- and post-training program. No significant difference was observed in resting VFC measurements between groups pre and post-training program, however the magnitude of the effect size was moderated (ES = 0.50-0.80) for some variables (R-R interval, standard deviation of all R-R interval - SDNN, RMSSD, log-transformed of low frequency - InLF, and log-transformed of high frequency - InHF) in TF+V30 group. It was concluded that 10 weeks of strength training program with or without the vibration platform provided similar increase in 1-RM load in both groups, and although some evidences in this study indicate that vibration can increase vagal activity analyzed by ES, in neither groups the strength training was able to change VFC significantly.

O presente estudo revisou evidências acerca da relação entre o polimorfismo R577X do gene ACTN3 e o desempenho esportivo. Foram acessados estudos na base Pubmed através das palavras-chave: ACTN3 gene e sports performance. O gene ACTN3 codifica para uma proteína presente nas fibras musculares esqueléticas tipo II, a α-actinina-3. A maioria dos estudos demonstra uma relação entre a presença da α-actinina-3 e a capacidade de geração de força muscular. Porém, estudos recentes apontam que a ausência da forma funcional dessa proteína pode regular a utilização de substratos durante o exercício, priorizando o metabolismo oxidativo, poupando glicogênio muscular e favorecendo o desempenho em atividades de longa duração. Porém, ainda são necessários mais estudos envolvendo humanos para elucidar melhor esse papel metabólico.

The aim of the present study was to review the evidence on the relationship between the R577X polymorphism of the ACTN3 gene and sports performance. The Pubmed database was searched using ACTN3 gene AND sports performance as keywords. The ACTN3 gene encodes a muscle-specific protein, called α-actinin-3, which is only present in type II fibers. Most studies have demonstrated a relationship between the presence of α-actinin-3 and the ability of muscle to generate force. However, recent studies suggest that the absence of the functional form of this protein may regulate substrate utilization during exercise, giving priority to oxidative metabolism, sparing muscle glycogen, and improving performance in long-duration events. Nevertheless, further studies involving humans are needed to better understand the metabolic role of this protein.

Indivíduos com lesão medular (LM) possuem alterações na regulação autonômica em repouso, o que poderia afetar a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) durante o exercício. O objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar o limiar de VFC (LVFC) entre um grupo com LM e dois grupos controle sem LM. Participaram deste estudo 24 homens, sendo sete com LM (24,8 ± 2,0 anos, 76,5 ± 6,9kg, 176,3 ± 1,9cm), oito sem LM sedentários (CONSED) (24,1 ± 1,8 anos, 75,1 ± 3,6kg, 176,3 ± 3,0cm) e nove sem LM atletas (CONTRE) (22,6 ± 1,4 anos, 73,8 ± 5,3kg, 175,6 ± 2,5cm). Os participantes foram submetidos a um teste incremental em cicloergômetro de MS (17,2W/dois minutos) até a exaustão. O índice SD1 da VFC foi medido a cada estágio, sendo o LVFC identificado na primeira carga em que o valor de SD1 foi inferior a 3ms (LVFC3ms) e o primeiro estágio em que a diferença entre o SD1 de dois estágios consecutivos foi inferior a 1ms (LVFC1ms). O SD1, tanto em repouso quanto a 30% da Wmax, foi maior (p < 0,05) no grupo CONSED (45,8 ± 6,8ms) do que o grupo CONTRE (19,5 ± 4,4ms), mas nenhum deles foi diferente (p > 0,05) do grupo LM (25,8 ± 4,5ms). O LVFC3ms expresso em valores absolutos e relativos a carga e a frequência cardíaca máxima não foi diferente entre os grupos. No entanto, a carga do LVFC1msno grupo CONTRE (68,8 ± 8,3W) foi significante maior (p < 0,05) do que no grupo LM (21,5 ± 4,3W), mas ambos não foram diferentes do grupo CONSED (41,3 ± 8,7W). Esses resultados sugerem alterações no controle autonômico durante o exercício no grupo com LM, com tendência a retirada parassimpática precoce durante o exercício incremental.

Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) show alterations in the autonomic regulation at rest which can affect the heart rate variability (HRV) during exercise. The aim of this study was to compare the HRV threshold of a group with SCI with two control groups. Twenty-four men, seven with SCI (24.8 ± 2.0 years, 76.5 ± 6.9kg, 176.3 ± 1.9cm), eight sedentary subjects without SCI (CONSED) (24.1 ± 1.8 years, 75.1 ± 3.6kg, 176.3 ± 3.0cm) and nine athletes without SCI (CONATH) (22.6 ± 1.4 years, 73.8 ± 5.3kg, 175.6 ± 2.5cm) volunteered in this study. The participants performed an upper limb incremental test on a cycle ergometer (17.2W/two minutes) until exhaustion. The SD1 index of HRV was measured every stage, and the HRV threshold was identified at: 1) the first workload that elicited SD1 values lesser than 3ms; 2) the first stage that elicited a difference between SD1 values from two consecutive stages lesser than 1ms. SD1 values at rest or at 30% of Wmax were higher (p < 0.05) in CONSED (45.8 ± 6.8ms) than CONATH group (19.5 ± 4.4ms) but none of them were different (p > 0.05) from group SCI (25.8 ± 4.5ms). The 3ms HRV threshold expressed in absolute values or in relative to maximal workload and heart rate was not different between groups. However, the workload of 1ms HRV threshold in control group (68.8 ± 8.3W) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than SCI group (21.5 ± 4.3W), but these groups were not different from CONSED group (41.3 ± 8.7W). These results suggest changes in autonomic control during exercise in subjects with SCI, which might lead to an early parasympathetic withdrawal during incremental exercise.
