ABSTRACT Introduction: Voiding diary (VD) is an important tool in the evaluation of children with voiding symptoms. Voiding frequency, maximal voided volume (MVV), average voided volume (AVV) and nocturnal volume (NV) can be extracted and are valuable in diagnosing and monitoring these disorders. Recently, ICCS has reduced the period of data recording on VD from 3 to 2 days. We hypothesized that one day voiding diary would be enough for guiding treatment. Materials and Methods: Children with overactive bladder (OAB) and primary monosymptomatic enuresis (PMNE) were oriented to fulfill a 3-day VD. Data obtained from VD were evaluated for the first day (1dVD), the first two days (2dVD), and all 3 days (3dVD) and compared according to the MVV, AVV, frequency, NV and expected bladder capacity (EBC). The Friedman, Student's t test and the Fisher's exact was used. ANOVA was used for multiple comparisons. We also used Pearson correlation test. Results: Ninety-eight children were included, 59 had PMNE and 30 OAB. Frequency, AVV and VN were similar regardless how many days the voiding episodes were recorded. Only MVV was higher by a mean of only 32 mL on 3dVD compared to 1dVD. A 1dVD has a sensitivity of 93,9% and a positive likelihood ratio of 2.2. As for the correlation of MVV and EBC it was observed that in 83% of children, MVV was lower than EBC. MVV corresponds to 67% and 69% of EBC in children with PMNE and OAB, respectively. Conclusion: We believe that 1dVD is sufficient to assess these children. It has a high sensitivity and good correlation to 3dVD in evaluating these children. Bladder capacity in this population, evaluated by maximum voided volume, was close to 68% of that obtained by the EBC.

Abstract Glyphosate is a herbicide commonly used in agriculture for weed control. Current agricultural production demands vast amounts of this product, which are applied by ground or aerial spraying. The concomitant aerial currents promote glyphosate drift to vegetated or urban areas. In this context, we hypothesized that the lichens, Parmotrema tinctorum and Usnea barbata, could be sensitive to the action of glyphosate and therefore be used to bio-indicate the presence of this herbicide in areas affected by drift. Since living organisms respond in different ways to the action of herbicides, our interest was also to indicate biological markers responsive to the action of glyphosate, through concentrations and exposure times of the thallus, besides identifying the most sensitive species. We evaluated the effect of different concentrations (0.0, 4.8, 9.6, and 19.2 mg L-1) and exposure times (24, 48, and 72 hours) to glyphosate on the morphoanatomy, photobiont vitality, photosynthetic efficiency, and oxidative metabolism of the thalli. We found that the lichens, P. tinctorum and U. barbata, respond to glyphosate stress, with prospects for use in the biomonitoring of pollutant dispersal from plantation areas. When using P. tinctorum as a bioindicator, lichen morphoanatomy, photobiont vitality, and photosynthetic pigment concentration were efficient biomarkers for the effect of concentration and exposure time. For U. barbata, the lichenic morphoanatomy and the activity of SOD and APX enzymes were essential tools to indicate the herbicide action. Parmotrema tinctotum, however, was characterized as more sensitive in bio-indicating the presence of this herbicide to diagnose the air quality in urban areas or vegetation sectors adjacent to agricultural environments.

Resumo O glifosato é um herbicida comumente utilizado na agricultura para o controle de ervas daninhas, contudo, a produção agrícola atual demanda quantidades gigantescas deste produto, que são aplicadas por pulverizações terrestres ou aéreas, que acompanhadas de correntes aéreas, promovem a deriva do glifosato para áreas vegetacionais ou urbanas. Neste contexto, nós levantamos a hipótese de que os líquens Parmotrema tinctorum e Usnea barbata pudessem ser sensíveis à ação do glifosato e, portanto, bioindicar a presença deste herbicida em áreas afetadas por deriva. Como os organismos vivos respondem de diferentes formas à ação dos herbicidas, nosso interesse foi também de indicar marcadores biológicos responsivos à ação do glifosato, por meio de concentrações e tempos de exposição dos talos, além de identificar a espécie mais sensível. Para isso, nós avaliamos o efeito de diferentes concentrações (0.0, 4.8, 9.6 e 19.2 mg L-1) e tempos de aexposição (24, 48 e 72 horas) ao glifosato, sobre a morfoanatomia, vitalidade do fotobionte, eficiência fotossintética e metabolismo oxidativo dos talos. Nós verificamos que os liquens P. tinctorum e U. barbata respondem ao estresse por glifosato, com perspectivas para serem utilizados no biomonitoramento da dispersão de poluentes a partir de áreas de plantio. Contudo, para o uso de P. tinctorum como bioindicador, a morfoanatomia liquênica, a vitalidade do fotobionte e a concentração de pigmentos fotossintéticos consistiram em biomarcadores eficientes para o efeito de concentração e tempo de exposição. Para U. barbata, a morfoanatomia liquênica, bem como a atividade das enzimas SOD e APX constituíram ferramentas importantes para evidenciar a ação do herbicida. A espécie P. tinctotum, contudo, foi caracterizada como mais sensível, sendo indicada para bioindicar a presença deste herbicida e para diagnosticar a qualidade do ar em áreas urbanas ou fragmentos vegetacionais imersos em matrizes agrícolas.

RESUMO A cor nos animais responde a pressões seletivas e media a relação entre organismo e ambiente. Peixes recifais têm a maior variedade de tipos de células de pigmento. Essa variedade de padrões de coloração pode funcionar como camuflagem e estar relacionada ao uso espacial. Nós testamos a hipótese de que a coloração dos peixes recifais está relacionada à ocupação do estrato da coluna d’água. Previmos que animais sedentários conectados ao fundo aproveitam a semelhança ao fundo ou padrões disruptivos; espécies demersais mais móveis aplicam coloração disruptiva ou deslumbramento de movimento; e que espécies pelágicas tendem a apresentar corpos prateados. Classificamos os padrões de coloração e categorizamos o uso do estrato da coluna d’água para os peixes recifais brasileiros no FishBase. Nossas análises confirmaram que quebras de contorno irregulares, sugerindo coloração disruptiva, ocorrem em espécies bentônicas e que a cor prateada prevaleceu no estrato pelágico. Nossos dados brutos sugeriram uma maior frequência de listras contrastantes, típicas do deslumbramento de movimento, em espécies demersais. Mas a considerável incerteza dessas estimativas não confirmou esse padrão. A coloração dos peixes recifais está correlacionada com a ocupação de diferentes estratos da coluna d’água. Isso pode ser interpretado como peixes sendo adaptados a estes habitats, explicando em parte a riqueza de padrões de coloração entre eles.

ABSTRACT Color in animals responds to selective pressures and mediates the relationship between organism and environment. Reef fishes have the amplest variety of pigment cell types. This color patterns’ variety may function as camouflage and be related to spatial use. We tested the hypothesis that the coloration of reef fish relates to water column stratum occupation. We predicted that sedentary animals connected to the background take advantage of background matching or disruptive patterns; more mobile demersal species apply disruptive coloration or motion-dazzle; and that pelagic species tend to have silvery bodies. We classified color patterns and categorized the water column stratum use for the Brazilian reef fishes in FishBase. Our analyses confirmed that irregular contrasting contour breaks, suggestive of disruptive coloration, occurs in benthic species and that silvering color was more prevalent in the pelagic stratum. Our raw data suggested a higher frequency of contrasting regular stripes, typical of motion-dazzle, in demersal species. However, the considerable uncertainty around estimates did not confirm this pattern. Reef fishes coloration is correlated to occupation of different strata in the water column. This can be interpreted as fishes being adapted to these habitats and partially explaining the richness of color patterns among them.

ABSTRACT Objectives: To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on clinical and surgical practice, educational activities, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urology residents. Materials and Methods: A web-based survey was sent to 468 Brazilian urology residents from postgraduate years (PGY) 3 to 5 to collect data on clinical practice and training after 4 months of COVID-19. We also assessed health-related and behavior changes, rate of infection by SARS-CoV-2, deployment to the front line of COVID-19, residents’ concerns, and access to personal protective equipment (PPE). Results: Massive reductions in elective and emergency patient consultations, diagnostic procedures and surgeries were reported across the country, affecting PGY 3 to 5 alike. Most in-person educational activities were abolished. The median damage to the urological training expected for 2020 was 6.0 [3.4 – 7.7], on a scale from 0 to 10, with senior residents estimating a greater damage (P< 0.001). Educational interventions developed included online case-based discussions, subspeciality conferences and lectures, and grand rounds. Most senior residents favored extending residency to compensate for training loss and most younger residents favored no additional training (p< 0.001). Modifications in health and lifestyle included weight gain (43.8%), reduced physical activity (68.6%), increased alcoholic intake (44.9%) and cigarette consumption (53.6%), worsening of sexual life (25.2%) and feelings of sadness or depression (48,2%). Almost half were summoned to work on the COVID-19 front-line and 24.4% had COVID-19. Most residents had inadequate training to deal with COVID-19 patients and most reported a shortage of PPE. Residents’ concerns included the risk of contaminating family members, being away from residency program, developing severe COVID-19 and overloading colleagues. Conclusions: COVID-19 had a massive impact in Brazilian urology residents´ training, health and lifestyle behavior, which may reflect what happened in other medical specialties. Studies should confirm these findings to help developing strategies to mitigate residents’ losses.

ABSTRACT Objectives To evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on clinical practice, income, health and lifestyle behavior of Brazilian urologists during the month of April 2020. Materials and Methods A 39-question, web-based survey was sent to all urologist members of the Brazilian Society of Urology. We assessed socio-demographic, professional, health and behavior parameters. The primary goal was to evaluate changes in urologists’ clinical practice and income after two months of COVID-19. We also looked at geographical differences based on the incidence rates of COVID-19 in different states. Results Among 766 urologists who completed the survey, a reduction ≥ 50% of patient visits, elective and emergency surgeries was reported by 83.2%, 89.6% and 54.8%, respectively. An income reduction of ≥ 50% was reported by 54.3%. Measures to reduce costs were implemented by most. Video consultations were performed by 38.7%. Modifications in health and lifestyle included weight gain (32.9%), reduced physical activity (60.0%), increased alcoholic intake (39.9%) and reduced sexual activity (34.9%). Finally, 13.5% of Brazilian urologists were infected with SARS-CoV-2 and about one third required hospitalization. Urologists from the highest COVID-19 incidence states were at a higher risk to have a reduction of patient visits and non-essential surgeries (OR=2.95, 95% CI 1.86 – 4.75; p< 0.0001) and of being infected with SARS-CoV-2 (OR=4.36 95%CI 1.74-10.54, p=0.012). Conclusions COVID-19 produced massive disturbances in Brazilian urologists’ practice, with major reductions in patient visits and surgical procedures. Distressing consequences were also observed on physicians’ income, health and personal lives. These findings are probably applicable to other medical specialties.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o desempenho zootécnico, a mucosa intestinal, a resistência ao estresse e a reação à infestação pelo parasita Ichthyophthirius multifiliis em larvas de jundiá Rhamdia quelen suplementadas com óleo essencial de Mentha piperita ou butirato de sódio em suas dietas. Foram utilizadas cinco dietas por 30 dias: dieta livre de inclusão de aditivos, 0% (controle); inclusão de 1% ou 2% de óleo essencial de M. piperita, EO1% e EO2%, respectivamente; e inclusão de 0,25% ou 0,50% de butirato de sódio, SB0.25% e SB0.50%, respectivamente. As diferentes dietas não foram capazes de inibir a infestação por I. multifiliis. A suplementação com SB0.50% em suas dietas apresentou melhor desempenho em todos os parâmetros zootécnicos analisados, incluindo um aumento do peso final em 54% e a sobrevivência em 70%, e aumentou (P<0,05) a largura das vilosidades e a quantidade de células caliciformes presentes na mucosa intestinal em aproximadamente 50%. Em vista desses resultados, recomenda-se a suplementação dietética de larvas de R. quelen com butirato de sódio a 0,50% por 30 dias.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the zootechnical performance, intestinal mucosa, and reaction to infestation by the parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis in jundiá Rhamdia quelen larvae supplemented with Mentha piperita essential oil or sodium butyrate in their diets. Five diets were used over 30 days: diet free of additive inclusion, 0% (control); inclusion of 1% or 2% of M. piperita essential oil: EO1% and EO2%, respectively; and inclusion of 0.25% or 0.50% of sodium butyrate: SB0.25% and SB0.50%, respectively. The different diets were not able to inhibit I. multifiliis infestation. Supplementation with SB0.50% in their diets presented better performance in all zootechnical parameters analyzed, including a 54% increase in final weight and 70% in survival, and increased (P<0.05) both the villi width and the amount of goblet cells present in the intestinal mucosa by approximately 50%. In view of these results, dietary supplementation of R. quelen larvae with 0.50% sodium butyrate for 30 days is recommended.

An alternating magnetic field (AMF)-stimuli responsive nanodevice based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) functionalized with water-soluble carboxylate-substituted pillar[5]arene (CP[5]A), namely MNP-CP[5]A, as a multiplatform for cancer treatment has been designed. MNP-CP[5]A was loaded with doxorubicin (DOX), showing a loading capacity of 9.5 mg g-1. The nanodevice demonstrated good colloidal stability, superparamagnetic behavior, and was capable to generate detectable heat in solution induced by AMF application. DOX release, monitored by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, was investigated by varying the temperature (37 and 45 °C) without AMF and in the presence of AMF (frequency (f) = 307 kHz, field amplitude (H) = 200 Oe, 45 °C) at pH = 7.4. Thermo-induced DOX release without AMF was 1.9% (1.8 μg mL-1) and 2.3% (3.3 μg mL-1) at 37, and 45 °C within 50 min, respectively. In an AMF DOX release increased to 5.7% (8.2 μg mL-1) within 50 min. Therefore, MNP-CP[5]A-DOX works as a chemo-hyperthermia nanodevice.

RESUMO Evitar a predação é um dos principais fatores que influenciam a sobrevivência. Portanto, qualquer traço que afete o risco de predação, como a camuflagem, deverá estar sob forte pressão de seleção. Confundir-se com a cor do fundo (homocromia) limita o uso do habitat, especialmente se ele é heterogêneo. Outro mecanismo de camuflagem é a coloração disruptiva, que reduz a probabilidade de detecção mascarando o contorno do corpo da presa. Aqui nós avaliamos se a coloração disruptiva no cavalo-marinho de focinho comprido, Hippocampus reidi, permite diversificar o uso do habitat. Analisamos 82 fotografias de animais, comparando a cor do animal à do fundo, e registrando o substrato de apoio (holdfast). Nós testamos se a presença (coloração disruptiva) ou ausência de bandas (coloração lisa) predizia a ocupação de substratos de cores diferentes. Nós também calculamos a conectância entre o morfo do cavalo-marinho e a cor do fundo ou o substrato de apoio, bem como se o morfo diferiu em suas preferências por substratos de apoio. Animais com coloração disruptiva eram mais encontrados em ambientes com cores diferentes de sua própria cor. Além disso, os animais com coloração disruptiva ocupavam habitats mais diversificados, mas tantos substratos de apoio quanto animais lisos. Portanto, animais com cores disruptivas eram menos seletivos do que animais lisos quanto ao habitat que utilizavam, o que concorda com a hipótese da coloração disruptiva.

ABSTRACT Predation avoidance is a primary factor influencing survival. Therefore, any trait that affects the risk of predation, such as camouflage, is expected to be under selection pressure. Background matching (homochromy) limits habitat use, especially if the habitat is heterogeneous. Another camouflage mechanism is disruptive coloration, which reduces the probability of detection by masking the prey’s body contours. Here we evaluated if disruptive coloration in the longsnout seahorse, Hippocampus reidi, allows habitat use diversification. We analyzed 82 photographs of animals, comparing animal and background color, and registering anchorage substrate (holdfast). We tested whether the presence (disruptive coloration) or absence of bands (plain coloration) predicted occupation of backgrounds of different colors. We also calculated the connectance between seahorse morph and background color or holdfast, as well as whether color morph differed in their preferences for holdfast. Animals with disruptive coloration were more likely to be found in environments with colors different from their own. Furthermore, animals with disruptive coloration occupied more diversified habitats, but as many holdfasts as plain colored animals. Therefore, animals with disruptive coloration were less selective in habitat use than those lacking disruptive color patterns, which agrees with the disruptive coloration hypothesis.

Resumo Um comportamento elasto-plástico é considerado para simular a ruptura da interface entre barras (ranhurada, helicoidal e helicoidal com areia)de fibra polimérica reforçada (FRP) e o concreto. As propriedades da interface são obtidas comparando os resultados do modelo com ensaios de arrancamento. As propriedades obtidas para a barra ranhurada são similares às propriedades conhecidas das barras de aço nervuradas. Neste caso, o comportamento em ruptura da interface não depende das propriedades da barra. Para as duas superfícies helicoidais, por outro lado, o comportamento da interface é realmente alterado pelas características da barra de FRP. A vantagem desta formulação é a capacidade de calcular trações de fissuração, responsáveis pela ruína do volume de concreto.

Abstract An elastic-plastic behavior is considered to simulate the interface rupture between grooved, helical wrapped and sand coated helical wrapped bars made of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) and concrete. Interface properties are obtained comparing results of the model with pull-out experiments. Properties obtained related to grooved bars are similar to properties known for ribbed steel bars. In this case, interface rupture behavior does not depend on bar properties. In case of both helical wrapped bars, on the other side, interface behavior is actually changed by FRP bar characteristics. The advantage of the present formulation is its capability to calculate splitting tractions, responsible for bulk concrete failure.

Resumo Neste artigo, um modelo numérico com descontinuidades fortes é apresentado para abordar problemas de fratura em materiais quase frágeis. É implementada uma formulação não simétrica estaticamente e cinemáticamente consistente. A descontinuidade forte no campo de deslocamentos é representada usando o método do elemento finito com enriquecimento elementar (E-FEM). Em outras palavras, a descontinuidade forte é introduzida no elemento finito e os graus de liberdade adicionais são condensados em nível de elemento, permitindo a implementação em códigos computacionais existentes. Dois modelos constitutivos são utilizados para analisar o comportamento da região fissurada, um linear e outro exponencial. Os resultados do modelo exponencial estão mais próximos dos obtidos em dados experimentais e simulações numéricas representativas do que o modelo linear.

Abstract In this paper a numerical model with strong discontinuities is presented to address fracture problems in quasi-brittle materials. A non-symmetrical statically and kinematically consistent formulation is implemented. The strong discontinuity in the displacement field is represented using the elemental enrichment finite element method (E-FEM). In other words, the strong discontinuity is introduced into the finite element and the additional degrees of freedom are condensed at the element level, allowing the implementation into existing computational codes. Two constitutive models are used to analyze the behavior of the cracked zone, linear and exponential. The exponential model results are closer to those obtained in experimental data and representative numerical simulations than the linear model.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the role of ARDT after surgical resection of ACC. Materials and Methods: Records of patients from our institutional ACC database were retrospectively assessed. A paired comparison analysis was used to evaluate the oncological outcomes between patients treated with surgery followed by ARDT or surgery only (control). The endpoints were LRFS, RFS, and OS. A systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis was also performed to evaluate local recurrence of ACC when ARDT was used. Results: Ten patients were included in each Group. The median follow-up times were 32 months and 35 months for the ARDT and control Groups, respectively. The results for LRFS (p=0.11), RFS (p=0.92), and OS (p=0.47) were similar among subsets. The mean time to present with local recurrence was significantly longer in the ARDT group compared with the control Group (419±206 days vs. 181±86 days, respectively; p=0.03). ARDT was well tolerated by the patients; there were no reports of late toxicity. The meta-analysis, which included four retrospective series, revealed that ARDT had a protective effect on LRFS (HR=0.4; CI=0.17-0.94). Conclusions: ARDT may reduce the chance and prolong the time to ACC local recurrence. However, there were no benefits for disease recurrence control or overall survival for patients who underwent this complementary therapy.

RESUMO No presente trabalho buscou-se avaliar o grau de tolerância à salinidade e os mecanismos fisiológicos de mudas de seis espécies lenhosas nativas da caatinga, sob um gradiente de salinidade do solo, em casa de vegetação. Utilizou-se um delineamento em bloco ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas, com cinco repetições, sendo as parcelas formadas pelas seis espécies e as subparcelas pelos níveis de salinidade do solo (1,2; 2,7; 4,7; 6,7; e 8,4 dS m-1). Os resultados demonstram que as espécies da Caatinga exibem uma elevada capacidade de adaptação em solos de salinidade baixa e moderada. Entretanto, considerando-se os graus de redução na produção de matéria seca total, no maior nível de salinidade, observou-se que apenas a espécie M. urundeuva mostrou-se tolerante à salinidade; H. impetiginosus e E. velutina se comportaram como moderadamente tolerantes. No presente estudo, também não foi possível estabelecer uma relação clara entre as trocas gasosas e o acúmulo de solutos orgânicos nas folhas com os graus de tolerância ao sal. Por outro lado, uma forte relação foi observada entre a razão Na+/K+ e o grau de tolerância das espécies em estudo, com as espécies mais tolerantes apresentando menos variação e valores mais baixos com o aumento da salinidade do solo. Estas espécies, contudo, mostraram uma baixa capacidade de retenção de Na+ nos caules, que pode ser um fator limitante na sua utilização em projetos de revegetação em áreas degradadas por salinização secundária.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the salt tolerance and physiological responses of six woody native species of the Caatinga ecosystem, on a soil salinity gradient in a greenhouse. The experimental design was of randomized blocks in a split-plot scheme; six plant species native of the Caatinga in the plots, and five levels of soil salinity in the sub-plots (1.2, 2.7, 4.7, 6.7 and 8.4 dS m-1), with five replications. The results demonstrate that species of the Caatinga ecosystem display a high capacity for adaptation in soils of low and moderate salinity. However, considering the reduction in total dry matter production at the highest salinity level, it was seen that only the species M. urundeuva was tolerant to salinity, and H. impetiginosus and E. velutina behaved as moderately tolerant. In the present study, it was also not possible to establish a clear relationship between the leaf gas exchange or the accumulation of organic solutes in the leaves with the degrees of salt tolerance. On the other hand, a strong relationship was seen between the Na+/K+ ratio and the degree of tolerance of the species under study, with the more tolerant species displaying less variation and lower values with the increases in soil salinity. These species, however, showed a low capacity for retaining Na+ in the stems, which may be a limiting factor on their use in revegetation projects of those areas degraded by secondary salinization.

SUMMARY Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a genetic disorder frequently characterized by obesity, growth hormone deficiency, genital abnormalities, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Incomplete or delayed pubertal development as well as premature adrenarche are usually found in PWS, whereas central precocious puberty (CPP) is very rare. This study aimed to report the clinical and biochemical follow-up of a PWS boy with CPP and to discuss the management of pubertal growth. By the age of 6, he had obesity, short stature, and many clinical criteria of PWS diagnosis, which was confirmed by DNA methylation test. Therapy with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) replacement (0.15 IU/kg/day) was started. Later, he presented psychomotor agitation, aggressive behavior, and increased testicular volume. Laboratory analyses were consistent with the diagnosis of CPP (gonadorelin-stimulated LH peak 15.8 IU/L, testosterone 54.7 ng/dL). The patient was then treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa). Hypothalamic dysfunctions have been implicated in hormonal disturbances related to pubertal development, but no morphologic abnormalities were detected in the present case. Additional methylation analysis (MS-MLPA) of the chromosome 15q11 locus confirmed PWS diagnosis. We presented the fifth case of CPP in a genetically-confirmed PWS male. Combined therapy with GnRHa and rhGH may be beneficial in this rare condition of precocious pubertal development in PWS.
