Objective: To evaluate the association between personality disorders (PDs) and suicide attempts (SAs) in euthymic patients with type I bipolar disorder (BD). Methods: One-hundred twenty patients with type I BD, with and without history of SA, were evaluated during euthymia. The assessment included a clinical and sociodemographic questionnaire, the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, the Young Mania Rating Scale, the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, and Structured Clinical Interviews for DSM-IV Axis I and II Disorders. Logistic regression was employed to determine associations between history of SA and patient characteristics. Results: History of SA was significantly associated with comorbid axis I disorder, rapid cycling, high impulsivity (attentional, motor, non-planning, and total), having any PD, and cluster B and C PDs. Only cluster B PDs, high attentional impulsivity, and lack of paid occupation remained significant after multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Cluster B PDs were significantly associated with SA in patients with type I BD. High attentional impulsivity and lack of gainful employment were also associated with SA, which suggests that some cluster B clinical and social characteristics may exacerbate suicidal behavior in this population. This finding offers alternatives for new therapeutic interventions.

Background Bipolar disorder is a chronic condition that affects the functioning of its carriers in many different ways, even when treated properly. Therefore, it’s also important to identify the psychosocial aspects that could contribute to an improvement of this population’s quality of life.Objective Carry out a literature review on the role of social support in cases of bipolar disorder.Method A research on the following online databases PubMed, Lilacs and SciELO was conducted by using the keywords “social support” or “social networks” and “mood disorders” or “bipolar disorder” or “affective disorder,” with no defined timeline.Results Only 13 studies concerning the topic of social support and BD were found in the search for related articles. Generally speaking, the results show low rates of social support for BD patients.Discussion Despite the growing interest in the overall functioning of patients with bipolar disorder, studies on social support are still rare. Besides, the existing studies on the subject use different methodologies, making it difficult to establish data comparisons.

Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito da restrição alimentar sobre o comportamento ingestivo de novilhas da raça Guzerá e Sindi. Foram utilizadas 36 novilhas, sendo 18 de cada uma das raças, distribuídos aleatoriamente em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 2 x 3. Os tratamentos utilizados foram de 20 e 40% de restrição em relação ao consumido pelos animais do terceiro grupo que se alimentavam à vontade (sem restrição). Para a análise comportamental utilizou-se o método de amostragem scan com registro temporal em intervalos de cinco minutos durante 24 horas contínuas, estimando-se assim o tempo despendido em alimentação, ruminação e ócio. Em relação às restrições impostas, notou-se que animais que não passaram por restrição alimentar apresentaram maior tempo de alimentação e menor tempo em ócio (p < 0,05), observando-se a mesma eficiência alimentar para novilhas das duas raças em confinamento. Os genótipos estudados quando submetidos até um nível de 40% de restrição alimentar se comportam de maneira igual quanto ao comportamento ingestivo, eficiência alimentar e mastigação merícica. Contudo houve efeito dos níveis de restrição que são alterações nos padrões de comportamento ingestivo, mastigação merícica, apesar de não ter ocorrido alterações na eficiência de alimentação e no tempo de mastigação por bolo.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of feed restriction on the ingestive behavior of Guzerat and Sindhi heifers. A total of 36 heifers were used, 18 from each breed, randomly distributed in a completely randomized design, in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme. The treatments used were 20 and 40% restriction compared to intake by animals from the third group, which were fed ad libitum (without restriction). For the behavioral analysis, the scan sampling method was used by logging and recording times in five-minute intervals during 24 hours, thus estimating the time spent feeding, ruminating and idling. With regard to the imposed restrictions, it was observed that non-restricted animals showed greater feeding time and lower resting time (p < 0.05); the two breeds showed the same feeding efficiency. When subjected to levels up to 40% of feed restriction, both studied genotypes perform similarly with regard to ingestive behavior, feeding efficiency and cud chews. However, there was an effect of the restriction levels on the patterns of ingestive behavior and cud chews, although there were no changes to feeding efficiency or chewing time per cud.

O propósito deste artigo é o de examinar as convicções filosóficas que dão suporte aos comportamentos de alguns professores de física ao lidarem com o ensino da Física no contexto de um laboratório. Entrevistas foram feitas com professores de "Instrumentação para o Ensino da Física", normalmente apresentadas nos currículos desses cursos, assim como com professores secundários que tivessem previamente feito tal curso. As questões foram formuladas de tal modo que os sujeitos pudessem ser envolvidos numa conversa sobre como ensinar alguns assuntos da física e até que ponto seria importante apelar para a experimentação. Os resultados desta pesquisa revelaram perspectivas diferentes sobre o tema entre os sujeitos, principalmente posições indutivistas e realistas ingênuas, as quais são comentadas neste artigo.

The purpose of this article is to examine the philosophical convictions which underline the behaviour of some teachers of physics when dealing with the teaching of physics in a laboratory context. Interviews were conducted with teachers of "Instrumentation for Physics Teaching", usually presented in physics courses syllabus, as well as with some secondary teachers of physics who had previously followed such a course. The questions were addressed in such a manner that the subjects could involved in a conversation about how to teach some contents of physics and to which degree it would be important to appeal to experimentation. The findings of this research revealed some different perspectives about the theme among the subjects, mainly naive inductivist and realistic contentions, which are commented in this article.
