O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a resposta funcional de Orius insidiosus que predaram ninfas de terceiro e quarto instar de Aphis gossypii criadas em variedades de algodão transgênico e convencional. Cinquenta fêmeas de O. insidiosus de 12-24h foram individualizadas por tratamento em placas de Petri. Diferentes densidades de A. gossypii (2, 4, 8, 16 e 32 ninfas por placa) foram testadas usando cada variedade de algodão. O número de presas consumidas foi avaliado durante 12h. Foi realizada uma avaliação final com 24h. O tempo de manipulação (Th) e a taxa de ataque (a) foram 0,0697h e 1,1862h-1, respectivamente, para a variedade Buriti e 0,0713h e 0,3030h-1, respectivamente, para a variedade NuOPAL. O número médio de presas consumidas por O. insidiosus foi similar para ambas variedades com 24h e com maiores densidades; a taxa de ataque foi maior com pulgões criados em Buriti do que criados em NuOPAL.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the functional response of Orius insidiosus preying on the third and fourth instars of Aphis gossypii nymphs that were reared on transgenic NuOPAL (Bollgard I Event 531) and conventional Buriti cotton varieties. Fifty O. insidiosus female bugs aged 12-24h were distributed into five different Petri dishes with different densities of A. gossypii (2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 nymphs per plate) for each cotton variety. The number of prey consumed was evaluated over the course of 12h, with a final assessment at 24h. The handling times (Th) and attack rates (a) were 0.0697h and 1.1862h-1, respectively, for the Buriti variety and 0.0713h and 0.3030h-1, respectively, for the NuOPAL variety. The average number of prey consumed by O. insidiosus was similar for both varieties at 24h and at higher densities; the attack rate was higher for the Buriti-reared aphid prey than for the NuOPAL-reared aphids.

O presente trabalho objetivou investigar se a presença de agrotóxicos no solo afeta a patogenicidade de Metarhizium anisopliae Metsch. (Sorokin) para Ceratitis capitata (Wied.). Avaliou-se também o efeito das formas de aplicação dos conídios. Foram utilizados os fungicidas clorotalonil e tebuconazole, o acaricida abamectina, o inseticida triclorfom e o herbicida ametrina, aplicados nas doses recomendadas pelos fabricantes. Porções de solo contidas em frascos de vidro receberam o fungo na forma de suspensão de conídios ou como conídios secos incorporados. Após a aplicação dos agrotóxicos, 20 larvas de 3º ínstar foram colocadas no solo. Os frascos foram então vedados com tecido voile e incubados a 27 ± 0,5ºC por nove dias, para iniciar a emergência dos adultos, e mais quatro dias à temperatura ambiente. A sobrevivência total do inseto foi substancialmente afetada. Observou-se a atividade patogênica a partir da fase pupal, com o fungo reduzindo (P < 0,05) a sobrevivência, o que também ocorreu na fase de adultos. A fase larval não foi afetada (P >0,05) pelo fungo. A presença de agrotóxicos no solo teve discreta ação na atividade de M. anisopliae; apenas com conídios secos incorporados, os fungicidas clorotalonil e tebuconazole reduziram em 86,2% e 82,5%, respectivamente, a sobrevivência total de C. capitata, enquanto no controle a redução foi de 95,0%. A forma de aplicação dos conídios não influenciou a sobrevivência total do inseto, mas a aplicação da suspensão de conídios na superfície do solo reduziu a sobrevivência nas fases de pupa e adulto.

This research intended to investigate if the presence of pesticides in the soil could affect the pathogenicity of Metarhizium anisopliae Metsch. (Sorokin) for Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) and assess the effect of conidia application as suspension or dry conidia. The fungicides chlorothalonyl and tebuconazol, the acaricide abamectin, the insecticide trichlorfon, and the herbicide ametrin were applied at the manufacturer-recommended doses. Soil samples were placed in glass flasks and were given the fungus as conidial suspension or dry. After pesticide application, 20 3rd-instar larvae were placed in the soil. The flasks were sealed with voile fabric and incubated at 27 ± 0.5ºC for nine days, until adult emergence; incubation continued for four more days at room temperature. The total insect survival was significantly affected and pathogenic activity was detected from the pupa stage on. Pupa survival was reduced (P<0.05); the same occurred during the adult phase. No effect was observed at the larval stage. The pesticides applied to the soil affected the activity of M. anisopliae slightly: only in the dry conidia assay the fungicides chlorothalonyl and tebuconazole reduced (86.2% and 82.5%, respectively) the survival period of C. capitata compared to the control (95.0%). The techniques used for conidia application did not influence the total insect survival rate, but conidial suspension applied on soil surface reduced survival during the pupae and adult phases.

Análogos do hormônio juvenil (AHJ) têm sido testados como reguladores de crescimento de Bombyx mori L., com vistas ao incremento da produção de casulos. Esses produtos, quando aplicados em doses adequadas, prolongam o período larval. Os efeitos da aplicação de AHJ podem variar com o produto, a linhagem e o momento de aplicação. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito da aplicação tópica, em diferentes momentos, de três análogos do hormônio juvenil sobre o crescimento dos insetos e a produção de seda da linhagem brasileira C115xN108 do bicho-da-seda. Os produtos piriproxifem, metoprene e fenoxicarbe foram aplicados em larvas do bicho-da-seda a 24h, 48h, 72h e 96h após o início do quinto ínstar (HQI) e seus efeitos sobre características biológicas larvais e adultas e a produção de seda foram avaliados. Independentemente do momento de aplicação, os três produtos afetaram todos os parâmetros avaliados. A reserva de nutrientes acumulada durante o período larval prolongado dos insetos tratados foi destinada ao crescimento das glândulas sericígenas e, também, convertida em peso corporal, com conseqüentes incrementos na produção de seda. Aplicações entre 48 e 72 HQI provocaram os maiores incrementos na biomassa e na produção de casulos de B. mori. Variações no momento de aplicação de 24h e 96h não influenciaram a emergência ou a oviposição de adultos de B. mori, nem a viabilidade dos ovos.

Juvenile hormone analogues (JHA) have been tested as growth regulators of Bombyx mori L., aiming to increase the cocoon production. These chemicals, when applied in appropriate doses, promote prolongation of the larval period. The effects of JHA application may vary with the product, strain, and time of application. The objective of this study was to evaluate the topical application in different times of three JHA and their effects on larval growth and silk production of the Brazilian silkworm strain C115xN108. Pyriproxyfen, methoprene and fenoxycarb were applied on silkworm larvae at 24h, 48h, 72h or 96h after the beginning of the fifth instar (HFI) and the effects of the products on larval and adult biological characters and silk production were evaluated. Independently of the time of application, the three products affected all the evaluated parameters. The nutrients stored during the extended period by the treated insects were used for growing the silk glands and were converted in corporal weight, with consequent increments in the silk production. Applications of piryproxyfen, methoprene and fenoxycarb between 48 and 72 HFI promoted, in a general way, the largest increments in the biomass and cocoon production of B. mori. Variations in the time of application between 24 and 96 HFI did not influence adult emergence, oviposition or the egg viability of B. mori.

Estudou-se a preferência para oviposição e a performance larval de fêmeas de Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann). Fêmeas selvagens ou criadas em laboratório foram testadas, individualmente, quanto à preferência de oviposição em relação a uma espécie de fruto (mamão) em diferentes estágios de maturação e em relação a dois frutos de espécies diferentes: mamão e maçã. Tanto as fêmeas criadas em laboratório como as selvagens ovipositaram preferencialmente nos frutos de mamão maduro em relação aos verdes e que o mamão maduro foi o melhor para a performance larval. Com relação aos testes de preferência de oviposição e performance larval com frutos diferentes, mamão e maçã, evidenciou-se que as larvas, tanto selvagens quanto de laboratório, desenvolveram-se melhor no mamão. No entanto, apenas as fêmeas selvagens preferiram ovipositar no mamão em relação a maçã. As fêmeas criadas em laboratório não mostraram preferência de oviposição pelo fruto que permitiu melhor performance larval.

The oviposition preference and larval performance of females of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) were examined. Wild or laboratory-reared females were tested for oviposition preference in relation to papaya fruit in different stages of ripeness, as well as to two different fruits: papaya and apple. The results demonstrated that both laboratory-reared and wild females preferred ripe papaya fruit compared to unripe fruit for oviposition, and that ripe papaya was the best for larval performance. When oviposition preference was tested with different fruits (papaya and apple), both wild and laboratory-reared larvae developed better in papaya. However, only wild females showed a preference for oviposition on papaya as opposed to apple. Laboratory-reared females showed no oviposition preference on fruits that resulted in better larval performance.

The influence of two factors, age and previous experience, on the oviposition hierarchy preference of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) females was studied. Two populations were analyzed: one reared in laboratory during 17 years and the other captured in nature. In the first experiment the oviposition preference for four fruits, papaya, orange, banana and apple was tested at the beginning of oviposition period and 20 days past. The results showed that the wild females as much the laboratory ones had an oviposition preference hierarchy at the beginning of peak period of oviposition. However this hierarchic preference disappeared in a later phase of life. In the second experiment the females were previously exposed to fruits of different hierarchic positions and afterwards their choice was tested in respect to the oviposition preference for those fruits. The results showed that there was an influence of the previous experience on the posterior choice of fruits to oviposition when the females were exposed to fruits of lower hierarchic position.
