Resumo A atividade antioxidante do mel de Tetragonisca angustula (TAH) e seu extrato etanólico (TAEE) foram investigados. Os níveis totais de fenólicos (TPC) e flavonóides (TFC) também foram avaliados. Os resultados para TPC foram 19,91 ± 0,38 e 29,37 ± 1,82 mg GAE g-1 e para TFC 0,20 ± 0,02 e 0,14 ± 0,01 mg QE g-1 de TAH e TAEE, respectivamente. As atividades antioxidantes foram 73,29 ± 0,49% e 93,36 ± 0,27% no ensaio DPPH● e 71,73 ± 4,07% e 97,86 ± 0,35% no ABTS●+ para TAH e TAEE, respectivamente. A atividade redutora total foi determinada pelo método de poder redutor (PR) e íon ferrico (Fe III) e os resultados variaram em PR de 151,7 ± 25,7 e 230,7 ± 25,2 mg GAE L-1, para TAH e TAEE respectivamente e para (Fe III) em EC50 0,284 em TAEE e 0,687 em TAH. A análise química por HPLC-DAD do extrato etanólico (TAEE) revelou a presença de ácido ferúlico como componente majoritário no extrato. A análise de RMN 1H confirmou esta estrutura e mostrou a presença de glicose, ácido cítrico, ácido succínico, prolina e derivados de hidrocarbonetos no TAEE. Além disso, a origem botânica também foi investigada e apresentou característica multifloral, tendo encontrado 19 tipos polínicos com predomínio botânico da família Anacardiaceae, sendo o pólen Tapirira predominante (42,6%) e o Schinus secundário (25,7%). Os resultados mostraram que o mel de T. angustula é uma interessante fonte de compostos fenólicos antioxidantes devido à sua origem floral e pode atuar como protetor da saúde humana quando consumido.

Abstract The antioxidant activity of Tetragonisca angustula honey (TAH) and its ethanolic extract (TAEE) were investigated. The total levels of phenolic (TPC) and flavonoids (TFC) were also evaluated. The results for TPC were 19.91 ± 0.38 and 29.37 ± 1.82 mg GAE g-1 and for TFC 0.20 ± 0.02 and 0.14 ± 0.01 mg QE g-1 of TAH and TAEE, respectively. Antioxidant activities were 73.29 ± 0.49% and 93.36 ± 0.27% in the DPPH● assay and 71.73 ± 4.07% and 97.86 ± 0.35% in ABTS●+ for TAH and TAEE, respectively. The total reducing activity was determined by the method of reducing power (PR) and iron ion (Fe III) and the results varied in PR from 151.7 ± 25.7 and 230.7 ± 25.2 mg GAE L-1, for TAH and TAEE respectively and for (Fe III) in EC50 0.284 in TAEE and 0.687 in TAH. Chemical analysis by HPLC-DAD of the ethanolic extract (TAEE) revealed the presence of ferulic acid as majority phenolic component in the extract. The 1H NMR analysis confirmed this structure and showed the also presence of glucose, citric acid, succinic acid, proline and hydrocarbon derivatives. In addition, the botanical origin was also investigated and showed a multifloral characteristic, having found 19 pollen types with a botanical predominance of the Anacardiaceae family, with Tapirira pollen occurring as predominant (42.6%) and Schinus as secondary (25.7%). The results showed that T. angustula honey is an interesting source of antioxidant phenolic compounds due to its floral origin and can act as a protector of human health when consumed.

BACKGROUND Eosinophils are granulocytes that rapidly increase frequency in the bloodstream during helminthic infections and allergic responses. They are found in tissue infected by Leishmania during early disease, but their role during infection is not entirely understood. OBJECTIVES We aim to compare the disease due to Leishmania amazonensis in BALB/c and Δdbl-GATA1 mice, which lack eosinophils. METHODS BALB/c and Δdbl-GATA1 mice infected with L. amazonensis were observed for several weeks. The parasite load and dissemination pattern were assessed. FINDINGS The Δdbl-GATA1 mice developed an anticipated dissemination of L. amazonensis and a worsening disease. No differences were found in the lesion development or the parasite load in the footpad among Δdbl-GATA1 mice and BALB/c eight weeks after infection. However, nine weeks after infection, massive growth of metastatic lesions appeared in several parts of the skin in Δdbl-GATA1 mice, weeks earlier than BALB/c. We observed increased parasites in the bloodstream, probably an essential dissemination route. Thirteen weeks after infection, metastatic lesions were found in all Δdbl-GATA1 mice. MAIN CONCLUSION These results suggest a protective role of eosinophils in delaying the disease caused by L. amazonensis, although several limitations of this mice strain must be considered.

Abstract Analytical and computational calibrations and subsequent parametric analyses were performed on the four UHPFRC beams under flexure to estimate their actual shear strength. The computational models were calibrated using different values for the CDP parameters, and a finite element mesh sensitivity study was conducted. These models predicted the experimental behavior satisfactorily, and the analytical model was also able to find the beams’ failure loads and proved to be a simple tool to estimate their behavior. The parametric analysis showed that the current beams did not require stirrups once the UHPFRC had high shear strength, and the maximum shear capacity was accurately determined.

Natural additives with antioxidant properties can be used as biodegradable and sustainable alternatives to synthetic products, because they can inhibit the biodiesel oxidation reaction, increasing oxidative stability and extending its storage period. This research evaluated the efficiency of jabuticaba peels, gabiroba leaves, and hibiscus flowers in ethanolic extracts, analyzing through the simplex-centroid design, the induction periods (IP) and rate constants (k) of the biodiesel oxidation reaction at 110 °C. Antioxidant activity was observed in all extracts, either decreasing k or increasing the IP. The mathematical models obtained showed coefficients of determination greater than 0.9400, a non-significant lack of fit at the 5% level, and low dispersion between predicted and experimental data, indicating that the 1st order reaction fit was appropriate and can be used for predictive purposes. In this work, the optimization was performed with maximization of IP and minimization of k showing that the mixture containing 25% of jabuticaba peels extract and 75% of gabiroba leaves extract was the most suitable, because proportionally increased the IP and decreased k of the biodiesel oxidation reaction. It is possible to suggest the use of jabuticaba peels extract or gabiroba leaves extract as well as various combinations between them as antioxidant additives.

ABSTRACT: Fertigation is widely used in seedling production for different crops, including passion fruit. There is no consensus on the ideal nutrient solution, and as such, nurseries have used fertigation empirically. This study assessed the electrical conductivity of nutrient solution containing macro and micronutrients in passion fruit seedling production and compared it with commercially used fertigation. A completely randomized design was used, with five treatments and six repetitions. Four electrical conductivities (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 dS m-1) of a complete nutrient solution and an additional treatment (commercial nutrient solution) were analyzed. Daily fertigation with a complete nutrient solution (macro and micronutrients) at electrical conductivities between 2.6 and 3.3 dS m-1 followed by two daily irrigations are efficient at producing FB 300 “Araguari” passion fruit seedlings in coconut fiber substrate, with benefits such as greater biomass and better Dickson quality index when compared to commercial nutrient solution.

RESUMO: A fertirrigação é amplamente utilizada na produção de mudas de várias culturas, inclusive o maracujazeiro. Não existe consenso sobre qual solução nutritiva deve ser adotada na produção de mudas de maracujazeiro, mas por causa disso, viveiristas têm usado a fertirrigação empiricamente. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar condutividades elétricas de solução nutritiva com macros e micronutrientes na produção de mudas de maracujazeiro e compará-las com uma fertirrigação adotada comercialmente. Foi utilizado delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e seis repetições. Foram estudadas quatro condutividades elétricas (0,5; 1,0; 2,0 e 4,0 dS m-1) de solução nutritiva completa e um tratamento adicional (solução nutritiva adotada comercialmente). Em substrato à base de fibra de coco, fertirrigações diárias com solução nutritiva completa (macro e micronutrientes), com condutividades elétricas entre 2,6 a 3,3 dS m-1, seguidas de duas irrigações diárias são eficientes na produção de mudas de maracujazeiro FB 300 “Araguari”, inclusive com vantagens, como maior biomassa e índice de qualidade de Dickson em relação à solução nutritiva comercial.

Resumo Este estudo, de caráter misto e sequencial exploratório, objetivou identificar padrões relacionados a trajetória de mulheres gestantes e puérperas que evoluíram para situações de risco, desde sua chegada em um primeiro serviço de assistência até sua admissão em uma maternidade terciária. A fase quantitativa analisou 1.703 prontuários e registros de internação de mulheres assistidas em três maternidades terciárias da Região Metropolitana de Fortaleza, no Ceará, entre 2010 e 2019. Na fase qualitativa, realizada entre janeiro e setembro de 2020, participaram 14 mulheres sobreviventes ao Near Miss Materno (NMM), por meio da Entrevista Narrativa Autobiográfica de Schütze. Os achados desvelam como atrasos relacionados aos profissionais e ao sistema de saúde contribuíram para a peregrinação de gestantes e puérperas e, consequentemente, para os quadros de NMM. A peregrinação destas mulheres associa-se a problemas nas estruturas da rede de atenção e dos serviços de saúde. Assim, fazem-se necessários o uso de ferramentas de acompanhamento da qualidade do serviço prestado pelos profissionais de saúde, os processos assistenciais bem estabelecidos, as estruturas físicas e as Redes de Atenção à Saúde (RAS), que suportem o seguimento desses processos.

Abstract This mixed-method and sequential exploratory study aims to identify patterns related to the trajectory of pregnant and puerperal women who evolved to risk situations, from arrival in a first care service to admission to a tertiary maternity hospital. The quantitative phase analyzed 1,703 medical records and hospitalization records of women assisted in three tertiary maternity hospitals in the Metropolitan Region of Fortaleza, Ceará, from 2010 to 2019. The qualitative phase was conducted from January to September 2020 with 14 women survivors of Maternal Near Miss (MNM), using Schütze’s Autobiographical Narrative Interview. The findings reveal how delays related to professionals and the health system contributed to the pilgrimage of pregnant and postpartum women and, consequently, to the MNM cases. The peregrination of these women is associated with problems in the structures of the Care Network and the services. Thus, it becomes necessary to use tools to monitor the quality of the service provided by health professionals and to provide well-established care processes, physical structures, and the healthcare networks that support the follow-up of these processes.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar a influência dos fatores individuais e contextuais do hospital e do município de assistência sobre a sobrevida de pacientes com Síndrome Respiratória Aguda Grave por COVID-19. Métodos: Estudo de coorte hospitalar com dados de 159.948 adultos e idosos com Síndrome Respiratória Aguda Grave por COVID-19 internados de 01 de janeiro a 31 de dezembro de 2022 e notificados no Sistema de Informação de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Influenza. As variáveis contextuais foram relacionadas à estrutura, aos profissionais e equipamentos dos estabelecimentos hospitalares e indicadores socioeconômicos e de saúde dos municípios. O desfecho foi a sobrevida hospitalar em até 90 dias. Árvore de sobrevida e curvas de Kaplan-Meier foram utilizados para analisar a sobrevida. Resultados: A letalidade hospitalar foi de 30,4%. Idosos submetidos à ventilação mecânica invasiva e internados em cidades com baixo percentual de arrecadação de impostos apresentaram menor sobrevida quando comparados aos demais grupos identificados na árvore de sobrevida (p<0,001). Conclusão: O estudo indicou a interação de fatores contextuais com os individuais, e evidencia que características hospitalares e dos municípios aumentam o risco de óbito, destacando a atenção à organização, ao funcionamento e desempenho da rede hospitalar.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the influence of individual and contextual factors of the hospital and the municipality of care on the survival of patients with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome due to COVID-19. Methods: Hospital cohort study with data from 159,948 adults and elderly with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome due to COVID-19 hospitalized from January 1 to December 31, 2022 and reported in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System. The contextual variables were related to the structure, professionals and equipment of the hospital establishments and socioeconomic and health indicators of the municipalities. The outcome was hospital survival up to 90 days. Survival tree and Kaplan-Meier curves were used for survival analysis. Results: Hospital lethality was 30.4%. Elderly patients who underwent invasive mechanical ventilation and were hospitalized in cities with low tax collection rates had lower survival rates compared to other groups identified in the survival tree (p<0.001). Conclusion: The study indicated the interaction of contextual factors with the individual ones, and it shows that hospital and municipal characteristics increase the risk of death, highlighting the attention to the organization, operation, and performance of the hospital network.

Resumo Objetivo: O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o alinhamento radiográfico na artroplastia total do joelho (ATJ) entre o pós-operatório imediato versus o tardio. Método: O estudo foi retrospectivo e observacional. A população do estudo foi composta por 200 pacientes com osteoartrite primária do joelho submetidos à artroplastia total do joelho. Resultados: Apenas a incidência em perfil evidenciou significância estatística entre as diferenças das medições das radiografias pós-operatória imediata da ATJ e com 3 meses de pós-operatório. Conclusão: O nosso estudo demonstrou uma variação entre a radiografia pós-operatória imediata da artroplastia total do joelho e a radiografia de controlo com 3 meses de pós-operatório apenas na incidência em perfil. Assim sendo, podemos inferir que a radiografia pós-operatória imediata na artroplastia total do joelho poderá ser um exame adequado para a análise pós-operatória.

Abstract Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the radiographic alignment in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between the immediate versus the late postoperative period. Method: The study was retrospective and observational. The study population consisted of 200 patients with primary knee osteoarthritis undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Results: Only the lateral view showed statistical significance between the differences in measurements on the immediate postoperative radiographs of TKA and 3 months after the operation. Conclusion: Our study showed variation between the immediate postoperative radiograph of total knee arthroplasty and the control radiography 3 months after the operation only in the lateral view. Therefore, we can infer that immediate postoperative radiograph of total knee arthroplasty might be a suitable exam for postoperative analysis.

ABSTRACT In this paper, we elaborate on theoretical issues concerning the promotion of child and young adults protagonism within school contexts. We also address how this may favor their development and visibility in such contexts. From a Cultural Psychology semiotically oriented approach, we conceptualize juvenile protagonism as the result of practices, values and beliefs that promote their actual participation in the construction, and possible changes, in social and pedagogical practices within the school ecosystem. Such participation allows them to share tasks and responsibilities with adults, according to their possibilities. Following this protagonic orientation, children and teenagers may develop, through social and pedagogical practices, their agency and responsibility, allowing for the collective construction of pro-social values and beliefs. We argue for the creation of a dialogic environment as a way to work against beliefs concerning “undeveloped” or “lack of capacity” conditions, which results in their invisibility. Therefore, juvenile protagonism, as a fundamental value to guide school activities, is necessary to foster cultural and pedagogical practices that take into account their voices and suggestions within educational contexts. RESUMEN En este artículo explicamos los aspectos teóricos relevantes para la promoción del protagonismo infantil y juvenil en el ámbito escolar, en el sentido de enfrentar la invisibilidad desde la infancia y también facilitar su desarrollo. Partimos del enfoque de la Psicología Cultural, con una orientación semiótica, para explicar el concepto de protagonismo infantil y juvenil. Esta se entiende como el resultado de creencias, valores y prácticas sociales que promuevan la participación real en la construcción, y en los posibles cambios, de las prácticas sociales y pedagógicas del ecosistema escolar, a través del reparto de tareas y responsabilidades con los adultos, según a la capacidad de todos los involucrados. De acuerdo con una orientación hacia el protagonismo, los sujetos pueden desarrollar, a través de prácticas sociales y pedagógicas, agencia y responsabilidad, lo que permite la construcción colectiva de creencias y valores prosociales. Argumentamos sobre cómo la creación de un ambiente dialógico puede oponerse a las creencias en la incapacidad y la incompletud de los niños y adolescentes, que están en la base de la invisibilidad de este grupo etario. ABSTRACT Introduction: Chronic kidney disease patients have a higher risk of infection and worse clinical outcomes after coronavirus disease. We aimed to assess the prevalence of infection and the humoral response after vaccination in peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods: Three types of vaccines were administered (two doses) with the antibody detection at least six months after. Coronavirus disease 2019 infections, hospital admissions, and deaths were evaluated. Results: From 70 prevalent patients, 45 were included. There was a significant increase in antibody level, with a median of 92 (36, 447) U/mL. Only 4% of patients remained seronegative. History of immunosuppressive therapy was associated with no response (100% vs 60%, p=0.010). There were two infections after the vaccination, without hospital admission. Conclusion: Immunization against coronavirus disease was effective in generating a humoral response in peritoneal dialysis patients. There was also an evident impact of immunosuppressive therapy on vaccine response in peritoneal dialysis patients.
