OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to describe the clinical, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic cardiological findings in a group of patients with oral clefts. METHODS: This is a prospective cross-sectional study on 70 children (age range from 13 days to 19 years) with oral clefts who attended the multidisciplinary program of a university hospital from March 2013 to September 2014. The patients were evaluated by a pediatric cardiologist and underwent detailed anamnesis, physical examination, electrocardiogram, and echocardiogram. RESULTS: Sixty percent of the patients were male; 55.7% presented with cleft lip and palate, and 40.0% presented with health complaints. Comorbidities were found in 44.3%. Relevant pregnancy, neonatal, family and personal antecedents were present in 55.7%, 27.1%, 67.2%, and 24.3% of the patients, respectively. Regarding the antecedents, 15.2% of the patients presented with a cardiac murmur, 49.0% with a familial risk of developing plurimetabolic syndrome, and 6% with family antecedents of rheumatic fever. Electrocardiographic evaluation showed one case of atrioventricular block. Echocardiograms were abnormal in 35.7% of the exams, including 5 cases of mitral valve prolapse — one of which was diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease. CONCLUSION: The finding of a family risk of developing plurimetabolic syndrome and a diagnosis of rheumatic heart disease indicates that patients with oral clefts may be more prone to developing acquired heart disease. Thus, our findings highlight the importance of anamnesis and methodological triangulation (clinical-electrocardiographic-echocardiographic) in the investigation of patients with oral clefts and emphasize that cardiological follow-up to evaluate acquired and/or rhythm heart diseases is necessary. This strategy permits comorbidity prevention and individualized planned treatment.

RESUMO A venda de juvenis de peixes não-nativos de grandes dimensões, chamados de “peixes jumbo”, está aumentando entre aquaristas no Brasil. Neste trabalho, pesquisou-se este comércio informal pelo Facebook® de maio/2012 a setembro/2016, coletando-se informações sobre espécies, família, nomes vulgares/científicos, origem, tamanho juvenil, comportamento e número/frequência de exemplares disponíveis nas cinco regiões geográficas do Brasil. Também avaliou-se o risco de invasão das espécies mais vendidas usando o protocolo Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST). Foram encontradas 93 espécies pertencentes a 35 famílias. Cichlidae foi a família dominante, e a maioria das espécies é nativa da América do Sul. Todas as espécies foram vendidas como juvenis (< 10.0 cm), e a maioria exibe comportamento agressivo. O híbrido Amphilophus trimaculatus × Amphilophus citrinellus, Astronotus ocellatus, Uaru amphiacanthoides, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Cichla piquiti, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Datnioides microlepis e Cichla kelberi foram as espécies mais comercializadas. A região sudeste apresentou a maior porcentagem de vendas, e o FIST mostrou que Arapaima gigas, C. kelberi e C. temensis foram consideradas de alto risco para desencadear invasões biológicas mediadas por descarte de aquários. Recomendações como a regulação do comércio, monitoramento, sacrifício das espécies e campanhas educacionais para os aquaristas são sugeridas para evitar futuras introduções de peixes via descarte de aquários.

ABSTRACT Informal sales of large-bodied non-native aquarium fishes (known as “tankbusters”) is increasing among Brazilian hobbyists. In this study, we surveyed this non-regulated trade on Facebook® from May 2012 to September 2016, systematically collecting information about the fishes available for trading: species, family, common/scientific names, native range, juvenile length, behavior, number of specimens available in five geographical regions from Brazil. We also assessed the invasion risk of the most frequently sold species using the Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST). We found 93 taxa belonging to 35 families. Cichlidae was the dominant family, and most species were native to South America. All species are sold at very small sizes (< 10.0 cm), and most display aggressive behavior. The hybrid Amphilophus trimaculatus × Amphilophus citrinellus, Astronotus ocellatus, Uaru amphiacanthoides, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, Cichla piquiti, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Datnioides microlepis and Cichla kelberi were the main species available. The southeast region showed the greatest trading activity. Based on biological traits, the FIST indicated that Arapaima gigas, C. kelberi and C. temensis are high-risk species in terms of biological invasions via aquarium dumping. We suggest management strategies such as trade regulations, monitoring, euthanasia and educational programs to prevent further introductions via aquarium dumping.

Desenvolveu-se esta pesquisa visando o aproveitamento do rejeito da dessalinização da água no cultivo hidropônico do meloeiro. O experimento foi conduzido no Departamento de Ciências Ambientais da UFERSA, localizado no município de Mossoró, RN, em vasos com substrato de fibra de coco sob condições protegidas. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso, com 3 repetições cujos tratamentos corresponderam a cinco níveis de salinidade da solução nutritiva obtidos com ou sem a necessidade de diluição do rejeito da dessalinização da água (2,1; 3,6; 4,9; 6,0 e 7,0 dS m-1). Avaliaram-se: altura de plantas, diâmetro de colo, área foliar, rendimento total e comercial de frutos por planta e, ainda, peso médio de frutos comerciais e totais. Em geral, as variáveis estudadas decresceram linearmente com o incremento da salinidade da solução nutritiva demonstrando que a salinidade da solução com água de rejeito reduz a disponibilidade de água para as plantas, devido ao efeito osmótico.

To use of waster water from desalting in the hydroponic cultivation, an experiment was carried out at the Department of Environmental Science of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido-UFERSA, in the municipal district of Mossoró-RN, in pots with substrates of coconut fiber under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with three repetitions. Treatments were composed of five levels of salinity of the nutrient solution obtained with, and without, dilution of the waster water from desalting (2.1, 3.6, 4.9, 6.0 and 7.0 dS m-1). The variables plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, mean weight of fruit and total and marketable yield were detemined. In general, the variables decreased linearly with the increase of the salinity of the nutrient solution, showing that the salinity with waster water from desalting reduces the absorption of water by the plants due to the osmotic effect.

FUNDAMENTOS: Após intervenções coronárias percutâneas, tem sido descrita uma reação inflamatória local que está diretamente relacionada à hiperplasia neo-intimal e à reestenose. O quanto esse processo inflamatório pode levar à progressão de placa aterosclerótica no vaso tratado ou nas outras artérias coronárias é ainda motivo de debate. OBJETIVO: Avaliar se há relação entre o grau de hiperplasia intimal intra-stent e a progressão de placa no vaso tratado. MÉTODO: Estudo retrospectivo com 36 pacientes com 40 lesões tratados com stents liberadores de zotarolimus, avaliados com ultra-sonografia intracoronária (USIC) após o procedimento e no reestudo protocolar tardio. Obtidos o porcentual do volume de obstrução intimal intra-stent (%VO) e a mudança de volume da placa aterosclerótica fora do segmento tratado (ΔVAT). Avaliamos a intensidade da relação entre as variáveis %VO e ΔVAT por meio do coeficiente de correlação de Spearman. RESULTADOS: O %VO foi de 14,5% ± 14,9%. Observada progressão de placa nas porções proximais (20,04 mm³/mm ± 58,61 mm³/mm) e distais (7,37 mm³/mm ± 25,86 mm³/mm) ao segmento tratado com stent. Não houve correlação entre o porcentual de hiperplasia neo-intimal e o grau de progressão de placa proximal (-0,015; p = 0,93), distal (-0,166; p = 0,36) ou em ambos os segmentos (-0,026; p = 0,89). CONCLUSÃO: Neste grupo de pacientes tratados com stents liberadores de zotarolimus, a ausência de correlação entre o volume de obstrução intimal intra-stent e a progressão de placa fora do segmento tratado sugere a existência de diferentes mecanismos inflamatórios por trás desses processos.

BACKGROUND: A local inflammatory response has been described after percutaneous coronary intervention and has been associated with neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis. Whether this inflammatory process might cause atherosclerotic progression in the same coronary artery or in the other coronary arteries is a matter of debate. OBJECTIVES: To assess a possible relation between the degree of neointimal hyperplasia and the progression of atherosclerotic plaque in the nearby stented segments. METHODS: Retrospective study in which 36 patients with 40 lesions treated with zotarolimus eluting stents were studied with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) during the index and follow-up procedures. In-stent percent volume obstruction (%VO) and change in atheroma volume in the arterial sub-segments outside the stented segment (ΔATV) were obtained. We assessed the strength of the relationship between %VO and ΔATV by the Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS: %VO was 14.5% ± 14.9%. Plaque progression was observed in proximal (20.04 mm³/mm ± 58.61 mm³/mm) and distal (7.37 mm³/mm ± 25.86 mm³/mm) arterial subsegments nearby the stented segment. There was no correlation between the degree of neointimal hyperplasia and the degree of plaque progression either in the proximal (-0.015; p = 0.93), distal (-0.166; p = 0.36) or both segments (-0.026, p = 0.89). Conclusion: In this group of patients treated with zotarolimus eluting stents, the lack of correlation between the degree of neointimal hyperplasia and plaque progression suggests different inflammatory reactions behind those phenomena.

A formação e composição de vanadatos de cobre obtidos pela interação de sulfato de cobre com diferentes vanadatos de sódio (orto, piro, meta e poli) foram investigadas por técnicas eletrométricas envolvendo titulações condutométricas e pH-métricas entre reagentes a várias concentrações em meios aquoso e aquoso-etanólico. As inflexões e degraus bem definidos nas curvas de titulações fornecem evidências incontestáveis sobre a formação e precipitação de vanadatos orto-3CuO.V2O5, piro-2CuO.V2O5 e meta-CuO.V2O5 de cobre nas vizinhanças dos pH's 8,1; 7,4 e 6,2, respectivamente. Os estudos sobre formação de poli-vanadato não forneceram resultados confiáveis. As investigações analíticas sobre os compostos formados confirmaram os resultados do estudo eletrométrico. A precipitação de orto-vanadato de cobre foi quase quantitativa e as titulações pH-métricas fornecem um método rápido e simples para determinação de vanádio(V) em soluções.

The formation and composition of copper vanadates obtained by the interaction of copper sulfate with different sodium vanadates (ortho, pyro, meta and poly) have been studied by means of electrometric techniques involving glass electrode and conductometric titrations between the reactants at several concentrations in aqueous and aqueous-ethanolic media. The well defined inflections and breaks in the titration curves provide cogent evidence for the formation and precipitation of copper ortho-3CuO.V2O5, pyro-2CuO.V2O5 and meta-CuO.V2O5 vanadates in the vicinity of pH 8.1, 7.4 and 6.2, respectively. The studies on formation of copper poly-vanadate failed to give any dependable results. Analytical investigations of the compounds formed confirm the results of the electrometric study. The precipitation of copper ortho-vanadate is almost quantitative and the glass electrode titrations ofers a simple and rapid method for determination of vanadium(V) in solutions.
