Abstract Nanotechnology is a field that, over the years, has been growing in several research areas, such as medicine, agriculture and cosmetics, among others. As a result, there is a continuous increase in the production, use and disposal of these materials in the environment. The behaviour and (bio) activity of these materials in the atmosphere, water and soil are not fully studied. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out an analysis of the risks of contamination, as well as the possible effects and impacts of nanoparticles (NPs) on the ecosystem. In an attempt to investigate these effects on plants, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) on the seed germination process of Sesbania virgata. For this, the Sesbania virgata seeds were subjected to different concentration of CuO NPs (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mgL-1) and their germination and development were monitored by optical analysis (thermography and chlorophyll a fluorescence). The results show that the CuO NPs induced a reduction on the maximum emission of chlorophyll a, which was concentration-dependent. The data also showed that CuO NPs promoted an increase in the energy dissipated by non-photochemical pathways and the surface temperature of the seeds. Additionally, our findings revealed that CuO NPs caused a root growth inhibition. In summary, the present study demonstrates, for the first time, that CuO NPs can negatively affect the physiological status and development of the S. virgata plant, by altering the efficiency of the functioning of photosystem II in its initial developmental stage, depending on the concentration of CuO NPs.

Abstract An updated synthesis of cyanobacteria and algae information is presented for Brazil aiming to refine the data gathered to date and evaluate the progress of the biodiversity knowledge about these organisms in the country since the publication of the Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The results of 2015 showed an increase of 1,250 species (35.7%) when compared to 2010, reaching a total of 4,747 species. The most diverse classes in species number were the Bacillariophyceae, Conjugatophyceae, Florideophyceae, Cyanophyceae, Dinophyceae and Euglenophyceae. Bacillariophyceae and Cyanophyceae had the highest increase in species number in the five-year interval. The Southeast and South regions were the most diverse, however, the Northeast, with the states of Piauí and Sergipe, and the Central-west region, with Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal, also stood out in the national algal biodiversity scenario. Despite the shortage of taxonomists and limited infrastructure, the results showed a significant improvement in the knowledge regarding the diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in the country during the study period, starting to even out regional geographical differences caused by subsampling.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Solid-state Ln-L compounds, where Ln stands for heavy trivalent lanthanides (Tb-Lu) and L is malonate, have been synthesized. Simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, TG-FTIR system, elemental analysis and complexometry were used to characterize and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The dehydration of the compounds begins at 303 K and the anhydrous compounds are stable up to 548 K. The results also provided information concerning the ligand's denticity, thermal behaviour and identification of some gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition of these compounds.

Root growth and crop yield can be affected by chemical modifications of the soil profile owing to lime and gypsum applications. A field trial was carried out on a dystrophic Clay Rhodic Hapludox in Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, aiming to evaluate the changes in the chemical soil properties and corn response to lime and gypsum applications at the installation of a no-tillage system. A randomized complete block design was used, with three replications, in a split-plot experiment. The main plots received dolomitic limestone treatments (no lime; 4.5 t ha-1 of lime applied on the surface supplying the total demand; 1/3 of the total demand applied on the surface during three years; total demand incorporated into the soil) and the subplots received gypsum rates (0, 3, 6, and 9 t ha-1). The treatments with lime were applied in July 1998 and the rates of gypsum in October 1998. Corn was evaluated in the agricultural year of 2001/02. The applied surface liming, at full or split rates, provided a more accentuated soil acidity correction in the superficial layer (0-0.05 m), and there was a stronger reaction in the 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m layers, when lime was incorporated into the soil. Gypsum improved the subsoil, increasing the concentrations of Ca and S-SO4(2-), raised N, K, and Ca concentrations in the corn leaves, while it reduced the Mg concentration in soil and corn leaves. Liming and gypsum treatments did not affect the corn root growth. Liming (whether surface applied, at full or split rates, or incorporated into the soil) and gypsum increased the corn yield, due to an increase in the Ca soil saturation of the superficial layers. The application of gypsum associated to liming was an effective strategy to maximize grain yields.

There has been an increasing interest to search alternatives for the establishment of crops under no-tillage systems in the southern region of Brazil, opening up new areas without soil disturbance. A field trial was carried out on a dystrophic Clay Rhodic Hapludox in Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, from 1998 to 2001, with the aim to evaluate changes in chemical soil characteristics, as well as the soybean response to lime and gypsum applications in a no-tillage system. A completely randomized block design with three replications in a split-plot experiment was used. The main plots received dolomitic limestone treatments (no lime, total rate of 4.5 t ha-1 of lime, 1/3 of this dosage during three years, as surface application and incorporated into the soil) and the subplots, the gypsum rates (0, 3, 6, and 9 t ha-1). Liming, whether surface applied or incorporated into the soil, provided a more accentuated soil acidity correction in the superficial layer (0-5 cm), but there was a stronger reaction in the 5-10 and 10-20 cm layers when lime was incorporated into the soil. The beneficial effects of lime for subsoil acidity correction were not very pronounced and more evident where lime was incorporated. Gypsum improved the subsoil, increasing the pH (CaCl2 0.01 mol L-1), Ca, and S-SO4(2-) concentrations, P concentrations in the superficial soil layer (0-5 cm) and in soybean leaves, and decreased Mg concentrations in the soil and soybean leaves. Results showed no soybean response, in three years, to lime and gypsum treatments. It was concluded that gypsum, whether applied as superficial or incorporated liming, did not present an interesting strategy for the installation of soybean crop in a no-tillage system, since no improvement in grain yields could be observed.

The effects of superficial lime application on chemical soil characteristics in no-tillage systems and its influence on root growth and mineral nutrition in maize crops has not been thoroughly investigated yet. To evaluate these effects on maize (hybrid AG 9090) and its reflexes on the grain yield performance under no-tillage, a field trial was carried out on a dystrophic Red Latosol (Hapludox) in Ponta Grossa, State of Paraná, Brazil. A completely randomized block design with three replications was used in a split-plot experiment. In the main plots, four rates of dolomitic limestone were applied on the surface (0, 2, 4 and 6 t ha-1) in July 1993, and two rates of dolomitic limestone (0 and 3 t ha-1) reapplied on the surface of the subplots in June of 2000. After 92 months, liming had decreased the exchangeable Al and increased pH, exchangeable Ca and soil base saturation values, down to a depth of 0.60 m. Similar effects were observed nine months after lime reapplication down a depth of 0.20 m. Under higher soil acidity, lime reapplication upon the surface provided a faster reaction. Root growth and grain yields of corn, grown unaffected by water deficits and under high concentrations of organic matter, were not limited by concentrations of 10 mmol c dm-3 of exchangeable Al in the soil. The relative root distribution, however, was improved by surface liming in compacted soil. Superficial dolomitic limestone application under no-tillage system caused an decrease of the K concentration in the corn leaves, without affecting the grain yield.

Calcium deficiency and aluminum toxicity are considered to be the most important acidity factors limiting root growth. A field experiment was carried out on a dystrophic Red Latosol (Haplortox) in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, to study the effects of surface application of lime and gypsum on root growth and nutrient uptake by soybean, cv. EMBRAPA 58, under no-tillage system. A randomized complete block design was used, with three replications, in a split-plot experiment. Dolomitic limestone was applied at rates of 0, 2, 4 and 6 t ha-1 (main plots) in July 1993; gypsum was applied at rates of 0, 4, 8 and 12 t ha-1 (subplots) in November 1993. The growth of soybean roots was not affected by acidity conditions in soil with 15, 12 and 8 mmol c dm-3 of exchangeable Ca and 28, 32 and 40% of Al saturation, respectively, in the 0-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm layers. Liming improved soybean nutrition and gypsum increased Ca and S uptake. Only lime application increased soybean yield, due to the larger availability and uptake of Mg and reduction of Zn and Mn contents in the leaves.

This experiment was carried out on a dystrophic Dark-Red Latosol from Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil, to evaluate the yield of corn, wheat and soybean as a function of the changes in the chemical characteristics of soil due to surface application of lime and gypsum under a no-tillage system. A completely randomized block design was used, with three replications, in a split-plot experiment. Dolomitic limestone was applied at rates of 0, 2, 4 and 6 t ha-1 (main plots) in July of 1993; gypsum was applied at rates of 0, 4, 8 and 12 t ha-1(subplots) in November of 1993. Corn was evaluated in the agricultural year of 1994/1995, wheat in the winter of 1996 and soybean in 1996/1997. Liming did not influence corn, wheat and soybean yields. Although lime acted upon the surface correcting the acidity of the superficial layers and subsoil, its effect in deep layers was not observed after 40 months. Gypsum improved the chemical characteristics of the subsoil, although it caused leaching of exchangeable magnesium of the soil. Of the three cultures studied, only corn responded to gypsum application, due to sulfur supply, the improvement of exchangeable calcium, the reduction of aluminum saturation and increased Ca/Mg relationship in soil.
