ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of minerals in the clay fraction on physical attributes of Yellow Ultisol cultivated with sugarcane and prepared with two different treatments: chiseling across the entire area and chiseling only in planting rows. The samples were collected from four layers of soil at eight months after planting. We assessed the texture of the soil, levels of iron extracted by dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) and ammonium acid oxalate (AAO), ratio of kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite), soil bulk density, and soil penetration resistance. The first area showed a higher ratio of kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) and the second area had greater levels of iron extracted by DCB. Levels of iron extracted by DCB were inversely correlated with soil bulk density and penetration resistance, while the kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) ratio was directly correlated with soil bulk density and penetration resistance. The area with a greater kaolinite/(kaolinite + gibbsite) ratio had higher values of soil bulk density and soil penetration resistance and the area with higher levels of iron showed lower values of soil bulk density and soil penetration resistance. The mineralogy influenced the soil's physical attributes, while soil preparation treatments did not.

ABSTRACT Jean-Martin Charcot, the most celebrated neurologist of the 19th century, had a profound influence on Sigmund Freud's career. Freud spent the winter of 1885-1886 working in Charcot's neurology department in Paris. During this period, he went to Charcot's house on several occasions to participate in the very famous Tuesday soirées under the guidance of Gilles de la Tourette. Freud was always very proud to be invited and curious to meet the Parisian intellectual elite. On these occasions, however, he was very apprehensive and made frequent use of cocaine. Due to anxiety and the need to appear creative in front of Charcot, it is possible that Freud used cocaine at other times.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

O trabalho apresenta a flora do gênero Anthurium (Araceae) no estado do Paraná. Ocorrem 12 espécies de Anthurium no estado: A. acutum, A. comtum, A. gaudichaudianum, A. hatschbachii, A. lacerdae, A. loefgrenii, A. marense, A. pentaphyllum, A. scandens subsp. scandens, A. sellowianum, A. sinuatum e A. urvilleanum.
This work presents the flora of the genus Anthurium (Araceae) in Paraná State. Twelve species of Anthurium occur in the state: A. acutum, A. comtum, A. gaudichaudianum, A. hatschbachii, A. lacerdae, A. loefgrenii, A. marense, A. pentaphyllum, A. scandens subsp. scandens, A. sellowianum, A. sinuatum and A. urvilleanum. The species are distributed just only in dense rain forest, except for A. loefgrenii which also occurs in arboreal restinga, A. gaudichaudianum also found in the cerrado and the transition between dense and mixed rain forest, and A. sinuatum that occurs only in semideciduous forest. There are five endangered species in the state: A. hatschbachii and A. urvilleanum (Critically Endangered), A. sinuatum (Endangered) and A. lacerdae and A. marense (Vulnerable). This work also presents morphological novelties: the presence of trichomes in the axillary axis of the ovary of A. hatschbachii, A. lacerdae, A. marense, A. sinuatum and A. urvilleanum, and apical-axial placentation type for A. acutum. Identification key, descriptions, photos, illustrations, geographic distribution, taxonomic remarks and conservation status are given for all species.

Introduction Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) primarily occurs in the Americas and produces disease predominantly in humans. This study investigated the serological presence of SLEV in nonhuman primates and horses from southern Brazil. Methods From June 2004 to December 2005, sera from 133 monkeys (Alouatta caraya, n=43; Sapajus nigritus, n=64; Sapajus cay, n=26) trap-captured at the Paraná River basin region and 23 blood samples from farm horses were obtained and used for the serological detection of a panel of 19 arboviruses. All samples were analyzed in a hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay; positive monkey samples were confirmed in a mouse neutralization test (MNT). Additionally, all blood samples were inoculated into C6/36 cell culture for viral isolation. Results Positive seroreactivity was only observed for SLEV. A prevalence of SLEV antibodies in sera was detected in Alouatta caraya (11.6%; 5/43), Sapajus nigritus (12.5%; 8/64), and S. cay (30.8%; 8/26) monkeys with the HI assay. Of the monkeys, 2.3% (1/42) of A. caraya, 6.3% 94/64) of S. nigritus, and 15.4% (4/26) of S. cay were positive for SLEV in the MNT. Additionally, SLEV antibodies were detected by HI in 39.1% (9/23) of the horses evaluated in this study. Arboviruses were not isolated from any blood sample. Conclusions These results confirmed the presence of SLEV in nonhuman primates and horses from southern Brazil. These findings most likely represent the first detection of this virus in nonhuman primates beyond the Amazon region. The detection of SLEV in animals within a geographical region distant from the Amazon basin suggests that there may be widespread and undiagnosed dissemination of this disease in Brazil.

In precision agriculture it is necessary to assess the quality of the maps of soil attributes. This paper aimed to evaluate the performance of geostatistical methods: ordinary kriging and sequential Gaussian simulation on spatial prediction of mean diameter of the goethite crystal in a regular grid with 121 points collected in a grid of 1 ha with regular spacing of 10 to 10 m. After the particle size and concentration analysis of iron oxides the values of the mean diameter of the goethite crystal were calculated. These were analysed by descriptive statistics and geostatistics, ordinary kriging and sequential Gaussian simulation was used for production of maps. With the results which evaluated the method is more faithful to make statistics, the cumulative probability density function conditional epsilon statistics εy. E-Type estimates were similar to ordinary kriging, due to the minimization of the variance. However, the ordinary kriging did not perform well in specific locations for crystallinity of goethite, while the E-Type map by sequential Gaussian simulation should be used instead of kriging maps. The E-type maps should be prefered as they present better performance in modeling.

The degree of connection between leaf gas exchange and leaf water potential, and the autonomy of these variables in relation to meteorological conditions were determined in three cultivars of Coffea arabica during clear and cloudy days. High values of vapor pressure deficit, air temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density resulted in low leaf autonomy during a clear day, irrespective the degree of connection among leaf physiological variables. Tight synchronization between physiological and meteorological variables was considered one important cause of net photosynthesis (P N) decreasing during a clear day. In contrast, diurnal P N was around three times higher on a cloudy day, when all cultivars presented high autonomy. Principal component analyses corroborated autonomy results revealing unambiguous opposition between leaf physiological and meteorological vectors, besides less leaf physiological variability throughout the clear day. Despite these general responses during clear and cloudy days, there were significant differences among studied cultivars. Leaf autonomy was an important reference to evaluate C. arabica under environmental stress and should be taken into account when selecting cultivars under field conditions.
