ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To evaluate the quality of information on gestational syphilis (GS) and congenital syphilis (CS) on the Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN-Syphilis Brazil – Notifiable Diseases Information System) by compiling and validating completeness indicators between 2007 and 2018. METHODS Overall, care, and socioeconomic completeness scores were compiled based on selected variables, by using ad hoc weights assigned by experts. The completeness scores were analysed, considering the region and area of residence, the pregnant woman’s race/colour, and the year of case notification. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used to validate the scores obtained by the weighted average method, compared with the values obtained by principal component analysis (PCA). RESULTS Most selected variables presented a good or excellent degree of completeness for GS and CS, except for clinical classification, pregnant woman’s level of education, partner’s treatment, and child’s race/colour, which were classified as poor or very poor. The overall (89.93% versus 89.69%) and socioeconomic (88.71% versus 88.24%) completeness scores for GS and CS, respectively, were classified as regular, whereas the care score (GS-90.88%, and CS-90.72%) was good, despite improvements over time. Differences in the overall, care and socioeconomic completeness scores according to region, area of residence, and ethnic-racial groups were reported for syphilis notifications. The completeness scores estimated by the weighted average method and PCA showed a strong linear correlation (> 0.90). CONCLUSION The completeness of GS and CS notifications has been improving in recent years, highlighting the variables that form the care score, compared with the socioeconomic scores, despite differences between regions, area of residence, and ethnic-racial groups. The weighted average was a viable methodological alternative easily operationalised to estimate data completeness scores, allowing routine monitoring of the completeness of gestational and congenital syphilis records.

This study evaluated the chemical composition, antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities, and the toxicity of hydroethanolic extracts of the Parkia platycephala Benth. Hot extraction with 70% hydroethanolic solution was used to obtain crude extracts of the leaf (LE), bark (BE), flower (FE), and seed (SE). Separation and identification of the compounds were performed by liquid chromatography with diode array detection and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities were performed by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) and Ellman methods, respectively, and the preliminary toxicity by the method with Artemia salina. Chromatography analysis indicated naringin, kaempferol, stigmasterol, and β-sitosterol in all extracts. Gallic acid is prominent in the LE and FE, while ferulic acid is abundant in the BE and lupeol and lupeol acetate are prominent in the SE. The BE antioxidant activity (lethal concentration of 50% (IC50) = 14.72 ± 0.13 µg mL-1) is equivalent to the standard rutin (IC50 = 15.85 ± 0.08 µg mL-1). The SE had the best acetylcholinesterase inhibition potential (IC50 = 5.73 ± 0.68 µg mL-1). Aside from the SE, which is not toxic, the other extracts had low (LE, FE) and moderate (BE) toxicity. The extracts of P. platycephala have potential antioxidant and therapeutic uses, especially against Alzheimer’s disease.

RESUMO: A pesquisa teve como objetivo a elaboração de uma bebida à base de extrato hidrossolúvel de castanha de caju (EHCC), fermentada com a cepa probiótica Lactobacillus paracasei ATCC 334. As formulações foram definidas pelo planejamento fatorial 22, com as variáveis independentes: concentração de Lb. paracasei (1%, 1,5% e 2%) e castanha de caju (100 g, 200 g e 300 g), e as variáveis dependentes: Composição (Umidade, Lipídios, Proteínas, Cinzas e Carboidratos) e Análise Sensorial (testes de aceitação e ordenação). A concentração de Lb. paracasei no EHCC apresentou valores entre 7,72 log UFC/g a 8,27 log UFC/g com seis horas de fermentação. De acordo com o FDA, esses valores indicam o potencial probiótico das formulações (acima de 6 log UFC/g); a concentração de castanha de caju (CCC) teve influência significativa (P < 0,05) em todos os parâmetros físico-químicos e atributos sensoriais do EHCC fermentado demonstrando-se como fator determinante para qualidade nutricional do produto; a concentração de Lb. paracasei afetou significativamente (P < 0,05) a redução da umidade e o aumento dos conteúdos de lipídios e cinzas. As bebidas F3 (300 g CCC, 1% Lb. paracasei) e F4 (300 g CCC, 2% Lb. paracasei) obtiveram as maiores notas no teste de aceitação e nos atributos aroma, sabor e impressão global. O estudo indicou que, além da boa aceitação sensorial o EHCC fermentado pode fornecer concentração de probióticos acima de 7 log UFC g-1, sendo assim uma promissora alternativa para atender a demanda diária de probióticos à pessoas que apresentam restrição à produtos lácteos.

ABSTRACT: The research elaborat a drink based on a water-soluble cashew nut extract (WCNE), fermented with the probiotic strain Lactobacillus paracasei ATCC 334. The formulations were defined by factorial design 22, with the independent variables: concentration of Lb. paracasei (1%, 1.5%, and 2%) and cashew nuts (100 g, 200 g, and 300 g), and the dependent variables: Composition (Moisture, Lipids, Proteins, Ashes and Carbohydrates) and Sensory Analysis (acceptance and ordination tests). The Lb. paracasei concentration in the WCNE registered between 7.72 log CFU g-1 to 8.27 log CFU g-1 for 6 hours of fermentation. According to the FDA, these values indicated a probiotic potential to the formulations (above 6 log CFU g-1). The concentration of cashew nuts (CNC) had a significant influence (P < 0.05) on all physical-chemical parameters and sensory attributes of the fermented WCNE, demonstrating itself as a determining factor for the product nutritional quality. The concentration of Lb. paracasei affected significantly (P < 0.05) the reduction of humidity and the increase of lipids and ash contents. The drinks F3 (300g CNC, 1% Lb. paracasei) and F4 (300g CNC, 2% Lb. paracasei) obtained the highest scores in the acceptance test and in the attributes of aroma, flavor, and overall impression. The study indicated that, in addition to good sensory acceptance, fermented WCNE can provide a concentration of probiotics above 7 log CFU g-1, thus being a promising alternative to meet the daily demand of probiotics for people who are restricted to dairy products.

Abstract Zoonotic spillover is a phenomenon characterized by the transfer of pathogens between different animal species. Most human emerging infectious diseases originate from non-human animals, and human-related environmental disturbances are the driving forces of the emergence of new human pathogens. Synthesizing the sequence of basic events involved in the emergence of new human pathogens is important for guiding the understanding, identification, and description of key aspects of human activities that can be changed to prevent new outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. This review synthesizes the connections between environmental disturbances and increased risk of spillover events based on the One Health perspective. Anthropogenic disturbances in the environment (e.g., deforestation, habitat fragmentation, biodiversity loss, wildlife exploitation) lead to changes in ecological niches, reduction of the dilution effect, increased contact between humans and other animals, changes in the incidence and load of pathogens in animal populations, and alterations in the abiotic factors of landscapes. These phenomena can increase the risk of spillover events and, potentially, facilitate new infectious disease outbreaks. Using Brazil as a study model, this review brings a discussion concerning anthropogenic activities in the Amazon region and their potential impacts on spillover risk and spread of emerging diseases in this region.

Abstract The incorporation of probiotics into fermented milk is beneficial for the consumer's health and it is important to know the viability of these microorganisms in the product, from production to final consumption. This research carried out a predictive study on the behavior of Lactobacillus acidophilus LAFTI L10 probiotic strain during the fermentation and storage stages of whole goat milk yogurt. Selective counts of L. acidophilus were performed with MRS medium added with clindamycin. The primary model of nonlinear regression by Baranyi and Roberts was fit to the experimental data in DMFit 3.5 software and statistically evaluated. The total fermentation time of the yogurt was 6.5 h and 3 logarithmic cycles of probiotic cell growth were observed. During storage, time influenced the concentration of L. acidophilus from the 30th day onwards, maintaining a minimum count that allows the denomination of probiotic yogurt to the product and certifying its quality. The Baranyi and Roberts model fit satisfactorily the experimental data. The results can benefit the dairy industry in the development, optimization, and reliability of their processes for dairy products.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar a associação entre imagem corporal e variáveis sociodemográficas e comportamentos de saúde, por sexo masculino e feminino. Analisou-se dados de 6.289 mulheres e 5.188 homens, entre 35 e 59 anos, participantes da linha de base do Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil) com a utilização da regressão multinomial. Entre as mulheres, a chance de insatisfação por se sentirem magras foi mais alta entre as com menor escolaridade e as que consumiam frutas semanalmente. A prática de atividade física moderada reduziu em 50% a chance deste tipo de insatisfação. Graus mais elevados de insatisfação por estar acima do peso foram observados entre as casadas, as que praticam atividade física leve e as ex-fumantes. Homens com nível médio de escolaridade e consumo excessivo de álcool tiveram em torno de 50% de chances mais elevadas de insatisfação por baixo peso, posto que a prática de atividade física leve ou moderada elevou essa chance em 75% e 94%, respectivamente. Entre os homens, a prática de atividade física leve e moderada também aumentam a chance de insatisfação por estarem acima do peso. Esses achados contribuem para reforçar que hábitos e comportamentos não saudáveis podem influenciar a insatisfação da imagem corporal com padrões diferenciados, segundo sexo.

Abstract The aim of this article is to assess the association between body image dissatisfaction and sociodemographic and health behaviors, according to sex. Data were analyzed for 6,289 women and 5,188 men (35-59 years), participants in the baseline of the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil), using multinomial regression. The odds of dissatisfaction due to feeling underweight were higher among in women with low schooling and those who only consumed fruit weekly. Moderate physical activity reduced this type of dissatisfaction by 50%. Higher odds of dissatisfaction due to overweight were seen in married women, those who practiced light physical activity, and former smokers. Men with secondary schooling and excessive alcohol consumption showed 50% higher odds of dissatisfaction due to underweight, while light or moderate physical activity increased the odds by 75% and 94%, respectively. Among men, light and moderate physical activity were also associated with increased odds of dissatisfaction due to overweight. These findings corroborate that unhealthy habits and behaviors can influence body image dissatisfaction with different patterns between women and men.

Preeclampsia is a multifactorial disease. Among these factors, untreated hypertension during pregnancy can result in high morbidity and mortality rates and may also be related to the future development of cardiovascular diseases.Therefore, this systematic review aimed to determine the association of previous preeclampsia with the future development of cardiovascular diseases. Studies on the association between preeclampsia and future cardiovascular diseases published in the last 10 years (2009-2019) were identified from the PubMed/Medline (207 articles), Embase (nine articles), and Cochrane (three articles) databases using the keywords “preeclampsia” and “future cardiovascular diseases”, “preeclampsia” and “future heart attack”, and “preeclampsia” and “future cardiac disease”. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 15 articles were analyzed by systematic review and meta-analysis according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The meta-analysis and the determination of the quality of the articles were conducted using RevMan software, version 5.3. Statistically significant differences were observed between the control and previous preeclampsia groups with respect to systolic blood pressure (mean difference [MD] 4.32; 95% confidence interval [95%CI] 3.65, 4.99; p<0.001), diastolic blood pressure (MD): 2.11; 95%CI: 1.68, 2.55; p<0.0001), and insulin level (MD: 2.80; 95% CI: 0.50, 5.11; p<0.001). Body mass index (MD: 2.57, 95%CI: 2.06, 3.07; p=0.0001), total cholesterol (MD: 10.39; 95%CI: 8.91, 11.87; p=0.0001), HDL (MD: 2.83; 95%CI: 2.20, 3.46; p=0.0001), and LDL (MD: 1.77; 95%CI: 0.42, 3.13; p=0.0001) also differed significantly between groups. Thus, the results of the present study showed that women with a history of preeclampsia were more likely to develop cardiovascular disease.

RESUMO Os padrões de atividade diária são elementos importantes do comportamento das espécies que refletem como elas interagem com seu ambiente e com outras espécies relacionadas. Investigar esses padrões é crucial para entender como as mudanças ambientais ou na comunidade podem afetar esse comportamento em cada espécie em particular. Dentro da família Felidae, os felinos silvestres de menor porte sofrem com uma grande lacuna de estudos nesse sentido, e pesquisas se tornam fundamentais para avaliar como eles respondem às condições e pressões locais. Leopardus guttulus (Hensel, 1872) é uma espécie ameaçada de extinção classificada como Vulnerável (VU) em nível regional e mundial, sendo ameaçada principalmente pela perda e fragmentação de seus habitats. O objetivo deste estudo é documentar o padrão de atividade diária de L. guttulus na Reserva Biológica do Lami e verificar a influência da sazonalidade e da temperatura nestes padrões. Nós também tentamos identificar o número de indivíduos usando a reserva biológica durante o período monitorado e avaliar o tempo de permanência destes na área. Obtivemos 25 registros independentes para L. guttulus, sendo a única espécie de felídeo silvestre registrada no local durante o período amostrado. No geral a espécie apresentou um hábito catemeral com atividade ao longo das 24 horas do dia, mas com uma maior atividade crepuscular/noturna nas estações da primavera e verão. A relação entre a atividade da espécie e a temperatura mostrou que mais de 70% dos registros foram obtidos em uma estreita faixa de temperatura de 10-17°C. Nós identificamos pelo menos dois indivíduos que permaneceram no local durante quatro a seis meses no ano, com maior frequência de detecção nos meses entre agosto e novembro. Nossos resultados demonstram algumas tendências interessantes sobre a atividade temporal de L. guttulus, sugerindo uma flexibilidade sazonal, e demonstram também a importância da reserva biológica para a preservação desta espécie no limite sul de sua distribuição.

ABSTRACT Daily activity patterns are important elements of species behavior that reflect how they interact with their environment and with other related species. To investigate these patterns is crucial to understand how environmental or community changes may affect this behavior in each particular species. Within the Felidae family, research becomes fundamental to assess how small wild cats respond to local conditions and pressures, once there is a large gap in studies addressing such issues. Leopardus guttulus (Hensel, 1872) is an endangered species classified as Vulnerable (VU) at a regional and global level, being threatened mainly by the loss and fragmentation of its habitats. The aim of this study is to document the daily activity patterns of L. guttulus at the Lami Biological Reserve, and the influence of seasonality and temperature on those patterns. We also aimed to quantify how many individuals were using the Biological Reserve during the study period and evaluate their permanence in the area. We obtained 25 independent records for L. guttulus, which was the only cat species recorded at the site during the study period. In general, the species presented a cathemeral habit, being active throughout the 24 hours of the day, but with a more crepuscular/nocturnal activity in the spring and summer. The relationship between the species’ activity and temperature showed that more than 70% of the records were obtained in a narrow range of 10-17°C. We identified at least two individuals that remained at the site from four to six months of the year, with a higher detection frequency between August and November. Our results showed some interesting trends for the temporal activity of L. guttulus, suggesting flexibility related to seasonality, and the importance of the biological reserve to the preservation of this cat species in the southern limit of its distribution.

Resumo: O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a associação entre posição social e o estado antropométrico em brasileiros adultos de ambos os sexos. O estudo transversal usou dados coletados entre 2008 e 2010 pelo Estudo Longitudinal de Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil), nas seis maiores capitais brasileiras. Um total de 15.105 funcionários públicos, ativos e aposentados, de ambos os sexos, entre 35 e 74 anos de idade. Duas variáveis latentes foram definidas pela análise de classes latentes: posição social e estado antropométrico. Os construtos e análises foram avaliados separadamente por sexo. As associações foram avaliadas com o uso de análise de regressão logística multivariada, ajustada para idade, cor/raça e estado civil. Em torno de 44% das mulheres e 26% dos homens foram classificados com sobrepeso ou obesidade. A posição social tendia a ser mais baixa nas mulheres (43,2%) e mais alta nos homens (40,4%). Houve uma proporção maior de mulheres com sobrepeso ou obesidade entre as pretas e pardas, e proporção maior de mulheres magras entre as brancas. Nas mulheres, após ajustes, o peso aumentava na medida em que a posição social diminuía (OR = 1,52; IC95%: 1,36-1,70), enquanto nos homens o peso diminuía junto com a diminuição da posição social (OR = 0,87; IC95%: 0,76-0,99). A posição social afetou de maneira diferente o estado antropométrico de mulheres e homens, com perfis corporais afetados também pela raça/cor da pele, indicando o potencial de levar em conta a perspectiva interseccional ao investigar os possíveis determinantes sociais do fenômeno.

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between social position and anthropometric status in women and men Brazilian adult. This was a cross-sectional study that used baseline data collected from 2008 to 2010 for the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil, in Portuguese), in the six major Brazilian state capital cities. A total of 15,105 active and retired civil servants aged from 35 to 74 years. Two latent variables were defined by latent class analysis, social position and anthropometric status. Both constructs and the analyses were separately evaluated by sex. Associations were assessed using multivariate logistic regression analysis with adjustment for age, self-reported skin color/race, and marital status. Around 44% of the women and 26% of the men were classified as overweight or obese. Social position tended to be lower in women (43.2%) and higher among men (40.4%). Heavier women were more likely to be black and brown-skinned, whereas slimmer women were more likely to be white. After adjustment, women’s weight increased as social position decreased (OR = 1.52; 95%CI: 1.36-1.70), whereas in men weight decreased as social position decreased (OR = 0.87; 95%CI: 0.76-0.99). Social position affected the anthropometric status of women and men differently, with body patterns also being affected by ethnicity/skin color, showing the potentiality of taking the intersectional perspective when investigating the possible social determinants of the phenomenon.

Resumen: El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la asociación entre posición social y estatus antropométrico de adultos brasileños de ambos sexos. Fue un estudio transversal, realizado usando datos de referencia recogidos entre 2008 y 2010, del Estudio Longitudinal Brasileño de Salud en Adultos (ELSA-Brasil), llevado a cabo en seis de las mayores capitales de estado brasileñas. Un total de 15.105 activos y jubilados, mujeres y hombres funcionarios públicos de 35 a 74 años de edad. Se definieron dos variables latentes mediante análisis de clases latentes: posición social y estatus antropométrico. Ambos constructos y análisis fueron evaluados separadamente por sexo. Las asociaciones fueron evaluadas usando una regresión logística multivariada con ajuste por edad, color de piel/raza autoinformado y estatus marital. Alrededor de un 44% de las mujeres y un 26% de los hombres fueron clasificados como con sobrepeso u obesos. La posición social tendió a ser más baja en mujeres (43,2%) y más alta entre hombres (40,4%). Las mujeres con más peso tenían más probabilidad de ser negras y mulatas/mestizas y las mujeres más delgadas tenían más probabilidad de ser blancas. En mujeres, tras el ajuste, se incrementó más el peso cuanto mayor decrecía la posición social (OR = 1,52; IC95%: 1,36-1,70), mientras en hombres el peso decrecía al igual que la posición social (OR = 0,87; IC95%: 0,76-0,99). La posición social afectó diferentemente al estatus antropométrico de mujeres y hombres, con los patrones corporales también estando afectados por etnicidad/color de piel, mostrando su potencialidad tomando en consideración la perspectiva transversal, cuando se está investigando los posibles determinantes sociales del fenómeno.

Resumo: O artigo descreve a história, objetivos e métodos utilizados pelas nove coortes do Consórcio RPS de Coortes de Nascimento. São identificados eixos temáticos comuns, com apresentação dos objetivos, anos de linha de base, fases de seguimento e representatividade das populações de estudo. O Consórcio inclui três coortes de nascimento de Ribeirão Preto, Estado de São Paulo (1978/1979, 1994 e 2010), quatro de Pelotas, Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (1982, 1993, 2004 e 2015) e duas de São Luís, Estado do Maranhão (1997 e 2010). As coortes provêm de três regiões do Brasil, de três estados diferentes, com importantes diferenças socioeconômicas, culturais e de infraestrutura. As coortes foram iniciadas ao nascer dos participantes, exceto a mais recente em cada município, onde as mães foram recrutadas durante a gestação. Os instrumentos para a coleta de dados foram refinados para aproximar diferentes exposições na primeira infância e a influência, a longo prazo, no processo saúde-doença. Os investigadores das nove coortes realizaram estudos perinatais e depois examinaram o capital humano, saúde mental, nutrição e sinais percursores de doenças crônicas. Um total de 17.636 nascidos vivos foram recrutados em Ribeirão Preto, 19.669 em Pelotas e 7.659 em São Luís. Nas coortes que foram iniciadas durante a gestação, foram entrevistadas 1.400 gestantes em Ribeirão Preto, 3.199 em Pelotas e 1.447 em São Luís. Foram utilizadas diferentes estratégias para reduzir as perdas de seguimento. A rede de pesquisa do Consórcio permite analisar a incidência de doenças e identificar possíveis relações causais que podem explicar os desfechos de saúde nessas populações e contribuir para o desenvolvimento de medidas públicas e políticas de saúde que estejam mais de acordo com as respectivas realidades.

Abstract: This paper describes the history, objectives and methods used by the nine Brazilian cohorts of the RPS Brazilian Birth Cohorts Consortium (Ribeirão Preto, Pelotas and São Luís) Common thematic axes are identified and the objectives, baseline periods, follow-up stages and representativity of the population studied are presented. The Consortium includes three birth cohorts from Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo State (1978/1979, 1994 and 2010), four from Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State (1982, 1993, 2004 and 2015), and two from São Luís, Maranhão State (1997 and 2010). The cohorts cover three regions of Brazil, from three distinct states, with marked socioeconomic, cultural and infrastructure differences. The cohorts were started at birth, except for the most recent one in each municipality, where mothers were recruited during pregnancy. The instruments for data collection have been refined in order to approach different exposures during the early phases of life and their long-term influence on the health-disease process. The investigators of the nine cohorts carried out perinatal studies and later studied human capital, mental health, nutrition and precursor signs of noncommunicable diseases. A total of 17,636 liveborns were recruited in Ribeirão Preto, 19,669 in Pelotas, and 7,659 in São Luís. In the studies starting during pregnancy, 1,400 pregnant women were interviewed in Ribeirão Preto, 3,199 in Pelotas, and 1,447 in São Luís. Different strategies were employed to reduce losses to follow-up. This research network allows the analysis of the incidence of diseases and the establishment of possible causal relations that might explain the health outcomes of these populations in order to contribute to the development of governmental actions and health policies more consistent with reality.

Resumen: El trabajo describe la historia, objetivos y métodos usados por nueve cohortes brasileñas del RPS Consorcio de Cohortes de Nacimiento. Se identificaron los ejes temáticos comunes y los objetivos, así como los periodos de referencia, la presentación del estadio de seguimiento y representatividad de la población estudiada. El consorcio incluye tres cohortes de nacimiento de Ribeirão Preto, Estado de São Paulo (1978/1979, 1994 y 2010), cuatro de Pelotas, Estado del Rio Grande do Sul (1982, 1993, 2004 y 2015), y dos de São Luís, Estado del Maranhão (1997 y 2010). Las cohortes cubren tres regiones de Brasil, de tres estados distintos, con marcadas diferencias socioeconómicas, culturales y de infraestructura. Las cohortes comenzaron con el nacimiento, excepto para la más reciente en cada municipio, donde las madres fueron reclutadas durante la gestación. Los instrumentos para la recogida de datos han sido depurados, con el fin de realizar una aproximación a diferentes exposiciones durante las fases tempranas de la vida y su influencia a largo plazo en el proceso de salud-enfermedad. Se incluyeron a los investigadores de las nueve cohortes, donde se llevaron a cabo estudios perinatales, así como los recursos humanos analizados posteriormente, al igual que la salud mental, nutrición y signos precursores de enfermedades no comunicables. Un total de 17.636 nacidos vivos fueron reclutados en Ribeirão Preto, 19.669 en Pelotas, y 7.659 en São Luís. En los estudios que comenzaron durante el embarazo, 1.400 mujeres embarazadas fueron entrevistadas en Ribeirão Preto, 3.199 en Pelotas, y 1.447 en São Luís. Se usaron diferentes estrategias para reducir pérdidas, con el fin de realizar el seguimiento. Esta red de investigación permite el análisis de la incidencia de enfermedades y el establecimiento de posibles relaciones causales que podrían explicar los resultados de salud de estas poblaciones, con el fin de contribuir al desarrollo de acciones gubernamentales y políticas de salud más consistentes con la realidad.
