Abstract In the 2022 carnival in Rio de Janeiro, the first to take back the city streets after the COVID-19 pandemic, the spectacular creativity of the samba schools emerged in themes of protest, of affirmation of black thought and the critique of racism and religious intolerance. In this “deeply black” carnival, Grande Rio, the victorious school of Grupo Especial, took to the parade at Sapucaí avenue the theme “Fala, Majeté! Sete chaves de Exu” [Speak, Majeté! Seven keys of Esu]. Following Simas’s (2019) suggestion of avoiding a dull reading of the politics staged on the avenue, and taking seriously the “delirium” of the performance in the parade, I turn to the poeticity of the narrative of Grande Rio’s plot in the book Abre-alas, then focus on the opening performance of the carnival parade and the encounter with the televised parade in a macumba house in Rio de Janeiro, opening the engagement with the performance to other realms beyond the carnival parade. I thus aim to pursue the restless potency of the school’s performance, as it seeks to open a space for a counter-colonial revelry.

Resumo No carnaval carioca de 2022, o primeiro a retomar as ruas da cidade após a pandemia de Covid-19, a criatividade espetacular das escolas de samba se expressava em enredos marcados pelas temáticas da presença negra, em enredos de protesto, de afirmação do pensamento negro e de denúncias contra o racismo e a intolerância religiosa. Nesse carnaval “profundamente negro”, a Grande Rio, escola vitoriosa do Grupo Especial, levou à Sapucaí o enredo “Fala, Majeté! Sete chaves de Exu”. Seguindo a proposta de Simas (2019) de descacetear a leitura da politica encenada no palco da avenida, e levando a sério o “delírio” da performance no desfile, percorro a poeticidade do enredo no texto do livro Abre-alas, voltando-me para a performance da Comissão de Frente e o encontro com o desfile desde uma casa de macumba no Rio de Janeiro, abrindo assim a performance do desfile para além desse cenário. Busco assim perseguir a potência irrequieta da performance da escola no seu abrir de um espaço para a “folia exúsica” que se quer trincheira contracolonial.

Resumo Mediadores entre diferentes esferas, as entidades conhecidas como povo da rua podem ser tomadas como a própria materialização do princípio de indeterminação, sendo consideradas perigosas e poderosas. Tal indeterminação age sobre os processos de objetificação e subjetivação que acontecem no ritual. Me volto aqui para as sessões de consulta, tomando o encontro entre entidades e seus clientes como um momento de instabilidade, onde a vulnerabilidade da linguagem - o perigo das palavras - está no cerne da própria eficácia ritual. Se todo encontro envolve um risco de des-entendimento, tal risco é certamente intensificado nas sessões de consulta com o povo da rua, onde a instabilidade é uma qualidade implícita do tipo de conhecimento que ali se busca, o qual envolve questões de amores, desafetos, traições e da violência vivida, todos domínios inerentemente instáveis.

Abstract Mediators between different realms, the spiritual entities known as the people of the streets can be taken as the very materialization of the principle of indeterminacy, being considered to be at once dangerous and powerful. Such indeterminacy acts upon processes of objectification and subjectification that unfold at the very heart of ritual. I turn my attention to the sessions of consultation, taking that encounter between clients and entities as a moment of instability, where the vulnerability of language - the danger of words - is at the center of ritual efficacy. If all human encounters involve a risk of un-understanding, such risk is certainly intensified in the session of consultations with the people of the streets, where instability is an implicit quality of the type of knowledge one seeks in such encounters, which are centered on issues of love, disaffections, betrayals and lived violences, all domains inherently unstable.

Enquanto narrativas podem ser pensadas como produtoras de "ordenamentos" e como manifestações simbólicas de formas ideológicas, por outro lado, podemos também enfatizar a dimensão poética da narrativa, apontando a produção de significados e a proliferação de signos mediados pelo ato de narrar o mundo. A partir desta perspectiva teórica, este ensaio busca explorar as muitas estórias sobre os chamados espíritos do "povo da rua", enfatizando a dimensão performativa da narrativa. Contadas por "clientes", "filhos-de-santo" e pelos próprios "espíritos", tais narrativas não são meramente simbólicas ou representativas, mas também constitutivas do próprio "poder sobrenatural" tido como inerente aos espíritos. Mais do que narrar uma "realidade" supostamente exterior a elas, as estórias tornam-se parte inextricável da "realidade" que narram. Ao deslocar o foco para além dos rituais demarcados espacial e temporalmente, a narrativa etnográfica busca aqui articular um espaço interpretativo onde se possa evocar a socialidade do narrar o mundo.

Although narratives can be conceived both as a mode of 'ordering' meaning and as symbolic manifestations of ideological forms, the poetic dimension of narrativity also involves the production of meanings and a proliferation of signs mediated by the act of 'narrating the world.' Adopting this theoretical premise, the essay seeks to explore the many stories of the so-called spirits of the 'povo da rua' ('street people'), emphasizing the performative dimension of narrative. Recounted by 'clients,' 'practitioners' and the spirits themselves, such narratives are not only symbolic or representative, but also constitutive of the 'supernatural power' attributed to the spirits. More than narrate a reality external to the stories, the narratives themselves become an inextricable part of the reality they narrate. By shifting the focus away from the framed space and time of ritual, the ethnographic narrative also seeks to evoke the very sociality of this narrating of the world.
