Abstract ‘BRMGS Camaleão’ is a mungbean cultivar with large, shiny, green seeds released for the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was developed by the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center as line VC 6148-B-16. In seven trials established in the Zona da Mata region, it had an average yield of 1493 kg ha-1 and 1000-seed weight of 68-78 g.

The usefulness of sclerotia morphology traits and mycelial growth rate to infer phenotypic variability in populations of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum associated with common beans in Minas Gerais State (MG) was assessed in two experiments. Isolates (131) were collected in the Northwestern, Alto Paranaíba, Zona da Mata and Southern regions of MG and the mycelial growth rate, the number, weight and dimensions (length, width and thickness) of sclerotia and mycelial pigmentation were assessed. There was a high variability among isolates, even among colonies of the same isolate. The variance of the first experiment for the mycelial growth rate, number, weight, length, width and thickness of sclerotia, were 0.01, 190.15, 0.01, 0.62, 0.12 and 0.05, whereas in the second, the variances were 0.01, 28.48, 0.002, 0.18, 0.06 and 0.03, respectively. Most correlations between traits were of low magnitude except that between length and width (r = 0.84, 'P < 0.001). Regarding colony pigmentation, non-pigmented, pigmented and highly pigmented isolates were identified, but for most isolates this characteristic varied between experiments. No groups based on phenotypic traits were detected. The morphological traits evaluated in the present study are not suitable for characterization of populations of S. sclerotiorum.

A cultivar de mungo-verde MGS Esmeralda foi criada pelo Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center, localizado em Shanhua, Formosa. Ela é resultado do cruzamento entre as linhagens VC 1973A e VC 2768A. Em dez ensaios conduzidos em Minas Gerais, ela produziu 13,5% mais grãos do que a cultivar Ouro Verde MG-2 (testemunha), e sua produtividade mais alta foi 2.550 kg ha-1. A cultivar MGS Esmeralda é mais suscetível ao acamamento do que a Ouro Verde MG-2, mas suas vagens amadurecem mais uniformemente. A massa de 100 grãos da 'MGS Esmeralda' varia de 5,5 a 6,8 g. Ambas as cultivares são suscetíveis ao oídio e à cercosporiose.

Mungbean cultivar MGS Esmeralda was developed by Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (Shanhua, Taiwan), as a result of crossing between the lines VC 1973A and VC 2768A. In ten trials conducted in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, it produced 13.5% more grains than 'Ouro Verde MG-2' (control cultivar), and its highest yield was 2,550 kg ha-1. The cultivar MGS Esmeralda is more susceptible to lodging, and its pods mature more uniformly than Ouro Verde MG-2 pods. One hundred-seed mass of 'MGS Esmeralda' ranged between 5.5 and 6.8 g. Both cultivars are susceptible to powdery mildew and cercospora leaf spot.

Foi examinada a existência de associação entre fatores sócio-demográficos, padrões de contatos com água e a infecção pelo Schitosoma mansoni em uma área endêmica em Minas Gerais (Divino), com o objetivo de determinar medidas prioritárias para prevenir a infecção; 506 indivíduos (87% dos habitantes com mais de 1 ano de idade) participaram do estudo. Aqueles que apresentavam ovos (n = 198) foram comparados aos que não apresentavam ovos de S. mansoni nas fezes (n = 308). As seguintes variáveis exploratórias foram consideradas: idade, sexo, cor, tratamento anterior com esquistossomicida, local de nascimento, qualidade da habitação, origem da água para o domicílio distância do domicílio em relação ao córrego, freqüência e motivos de contatos com água. As variáveis que apresentaram associações independentes com a infecção foram: idade (10-19 e > 20 anos), contato com águas para trabalho agrícola, pesca e natação ou banho (Odds relativas ajustadas = 5.0, 2.4, 3.2, 2.1 e 2.0, respectivamente). Estes resultados sugerem que medidas para prevenir a infecção devem priorizar os contatos com águas para o trabalho e o lazer nesta área endêmica.

Associations between socio-demographic factors, water contact patterns and Schistosoma mansoni infection were investigated in 506 individuals (87% of inhabitants over 1 year of age) in an endemic area in Brazil (Divino), aiming at determining priorities for public health measures to prevent the infection. Those who eliminated S. mansoni eggs (n = 198) were compared to those without eggs in the stools (n = 308). The following explanatory variables were considered: age, sex, color, previous treatment with schistosomicide, place of birth, quality of the houses, water supply for the household, distance from houses to stream, and frequency and reasons for water contact. Factors found to be independently associated with the infection were age (10-19 and > 20 yrs old), and water contact for agricultural activities, fishing, and swimming or bathing (Adjusted relative odds = 5.0, 2.4, 3.2, 2.1 and 2.0, respectively). This suggests the need for public health measures to prevent the infection, emphasizing water contact for leisure and agricultural activities in this endemic area.
