RESUMO O presente artigo é um relato sobre uma fêmea de D. novemcinctus que foi capturada de forma imprevista, durante um projeto de avaliação sanitária de animais silvestres sinantrópicos do município de Toledo/PR (autorização Sisbio/Ibama n. 55109-1). Durante a avaliação física, amostras de fezes foram coletadas após defecação espontânea e encaminhadas para análise. O material foi submetido aos métodos de flutuação simples em solução hipersaturada de cloreto de sódio e centrífugo-flutuação em sacarose. Na leitura das lâminas obtidas pelo método de centrífugo-flutuação em sacarose, foram observadas estruturas com comprimento de aproximadamente 10µm, forma bicônica e um tampão em cada extremidade, compatíveis com esporocistos de Monocystis sp. Protozoários do filo Apicomplexa, os Monocystis sp., são geralmente parasitas de anelídeos, como as minhocas. Esse organismo é comumente correlato a pseudoparasitismo em vários animais, porém não foram encontrados relatos de pseudoparasitismo desse agente em tatus-galinhas, logo essa é a primeira descrição de Monocystis sp. em espécime de D. novemcinctus.

ABSTRACT The present article is an account of a female of D. novemcinctus which was captured during a sanitary evaluation project of synanthropic wild animals of the municipality of Toledo/PR (license SISBIO/ICMBIO n°. 55109-1). During a physical evaluation, samples of feces were collected, after spontaneous defecation, and sent for analysis. The material was subjected to simple flotation methods in hypersaturated sodium chloride solution and centrifugal-flotation solutions in sucrose. In a test reading by the centrifugal-flotation method in sucrose, structures with approximately 10µm, biconical shape and one plate at each end were observed, compatible with sporocysts of Monocystis sp. Protozoa of the phylum Apicomplexa, like Monocystis sp., it is common parasitic annelids, such as worms. This organism is a correlate of pseudoparasitism in several animals but was not found to describe this product as an agent in nine banded armadillos, so this is a first description of Monocystis sp. in specimen of D. novemcinctus.

Oral mucositis (OM) is a common and dose-limiting side effect of cancer treatment, including 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and radiotherapy. The efficacy of the therapeutic measures to prevent OM is limited and disease prevention is not fully observable. Amifostine is a cytoprotective agent with a described anti-inflammatory potential. It is clinically used to reduce radiotherapy and chemotherapy-associated xerostomia. This study investigated the protective effect of amifostine on an experimental model of OM. Hamsters were divided into six groups: saline control group (5 mL/kg), mechanical trauma (scratches) of the right cheek pouch; 5-FU (60 and 40 mg/kg, ip, respectively, administered on days 1 and 2); amifostine (12.5, 25, or 50 mg/kg) + 5-FU + scratches. Salivation rate was assessed and the animals were euthanized on day 10 for the analysis of macroscopic and microscopic injury by scores. Tissue samples were harvested for the measurement of neutrophil infiltration and detection of inflammatory markers by ELISA and immunohistochemistry. 5-FU induced pronounced hyposalivation, which was prevented by amifostine (P<0.05). In addition, 5-FU injection caused pronounced tissue injury accompanied by increased neutrophil accumulation, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) tissue levels, and positive immunostaining for TNF-α, IL-1β, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Interestingly, amifostine prevented the inflammatory reaction and consequently improved macroscopic and microscopic damage (P<0.05 vs 5-FU group). Amifostine reduced inflammation and protected against 5-FU-associated oral mucositis and hyposalivation.

RESUMO O pinguim-de-magalhães é uma ave marinha de porte médio, de origem do hemisfério sul, com grandes colônias próximas à Patagônia. Em certas épocas do ano, alguns exemplares aparecem no litoral brasileiro, devido ao desvio de rotas de caça, e alguns indivíduos não conseguem retornar por debilidades na saúde. Foram utilizados 34 exemplares de Spheniscus magellanicus que vieram a óbito no litoral do estado de Espírito Santo. O presente estudo analisou a morfologia de câmaras e paredes cardíacas, valvas e artérias da base. Os fragmentos dessas regiões foram analisados histologicamente com coloração hematoxilina-eosina (HE) e Tricrômico de Gomori (TG), além da coloração Picrosirius Red (PSR) sob luz polarizada, visando observar, principalmente, a composição do tipo de colágeno existente em cada região descrita. Entre os 34 exemplares, nenhum apresentou discrepância em relação a sua morfologia. A tipificação do colágeno dessas regiões pelas colorações TG e PSR sob luz polarizada demonstrou a presença do colágeno tipo I em maior evidência que o tipo III, encontrada na maioria das estruturas, o que atribuiu a aparência avermelhada intensa a quase todas elas. Pode-se concluir que a anatomia cardíaca do pinguim-de-magalhães é semelhante à de outras aves, com predominância do colágeno do tipo I.

ABSTRACT Magellanic penguin is medium-sized seabird originated from southern hemisphere with colonies near Patagonia. At certain times of the year in Brazilian coast, a few penguins lose their hunting routes and can´t return because they are very sick. Thirty-four penguins died in Espírito Santo´s coast. This study analyzed the cardiac morphology and morph metric of heart chambers and walls, valves, and arteries of the cardiac base. These parts were analysed and stained by Hematoxilin and eosin and Gomori´s trichrome. Mainly targeting the collagen´s composition in each described part the Picru-sirius Red´s stain under polarized light was used. Among thirty-four penguin hearts, none presented discrepancy in morphology, they were all very similar. The characterization of collagen by Picrusirius Red stain highlighted type 1 collagen in comparison to type 3 collagen in most structures, giving a more reddish appearance in almost of them. In conclusion, the cardiac anatomy of the Magellanic Penguin is similar to that of other birds, with a predominance of type I collagen.

Estudou-se o desenvolvimento do boto-cinza (Sotalia guianensis) do litoral do Espírito Santo e verificou-se se a análise das radiografias da aleta peitoral pode ser utilizada para tal. Trinta e sete botos passaram pela determinação do comprimento total (CT), análise do grau de fusionamento das vértebras e radiografia das aletas peitorais. O CT ao nascimento foi de 103,3cm e o de animais maduros fisicamente 187,5cm. Observou-se correlação entre o CT, as epífises distais do rádio e da ulna e correlação entre o grau de fusionamento vertebral e a epífise distal do rádio. Concluiu-se que a análise radiográfica das aletas peitorais é uma boa maneira de avaliar o grau de maturação física do boto.

The aim of this study is to analyze the development of the estuarine dolphin from the coast of Espírito Santo and verify that the analysis of X-rays of pectoral fin can be used for such. Thirty-seven Sotalia guianensis were used, determining the TL, examination of the degree of fusion of the vertebrae and X-ray of pectoral fins. At birth the TL is 103.3cm and in physically mature animals the TL is 187.5cm. The TL showed a significant correlation with the epiphyses of the distal radius and ulna and the degree of spinal fusion showed significant correlation with distal radius. It can be concluded that the X-ray analysis of the pectoral fins is a good way of assessing the physical maturation of these animals and can be used in routine procedures.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a toxicidade de produtos fitossanitários comerciais empregados em cultura de citros para abelhas Apis mellifera Linnaeus. Os bioensaios foram realizados em laboratório, sendo tomadas medidas repetidas no tempo de mortalidade para os produtos tiametoxam, deltametrina, lufenuron, tebufenozida, propargito, cihexatina, metidationa e abamectina. A exposição das abelhas aos compostos foi realizada por meio de pulverização, ingestão de alimento contaminado e contato com superfícies tratadas. Independente do modo de exposição, tiametoxam, metidationa e abamectina foram extremamente tóxicos, com TL50 médio de 3,57; 3,34 e 23,12 horas, respectivamente. O inseticida deltametrina foi pouco tóxico quando pulverizado sobre as abelhas, mas demonstrou-se bastante tóxico quando ingerido e/ou em contato com resíduos sobre superfícies. Propargito foi tóxico quando ingerido pelas abelhas, com TL50 de 64,65h; entretanto, nos demais bioensaios, assemelhou-se a cihexatina, tebufenozide e lufenuron que foram considerados como inócuos às abelhas africanizadas adultas.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this work was to evaluate the toxicity of commercial pesticides used on citrus crop to the honey bees Apis mellifera Linnaeus. The number of dead honey bees was registered during time assays, which were carried out in laboratory conditions with the chemicals thiamethoxam, deltamethrin, lufenuron, tebufenozide, propargite, cyhexatin, methidathion and abamectin. The exposure of the honey bees to the chemicals was made by spraying, food contamination and contact with contaminated surfaces. In all assays, thiamethoxam, methidathion and abamectin were highly toxic, with average lethal times (LT50) of 3.57; 3.34 and 23.12h, respectively. In spraying assays, deltamethrin showed low toxicity to the honey bees, however, in supplied food contamination and residue contact tests, this pyrethroid was very toxic. For propargite, medium toxicity was verified when the contaminated food was supplied to the bees, with a LT50 of 64.65h, and in the other assays, a similar effect to cyhexatin, tebufenozide and lufenuron was verified, with low toxicity to the adult of africanized honeybees.
