Abstract The rising popularity of various types of wood panels and the advances in manufacturing technology have increased the uses of wood. The bonding of fibers and particles to form panels, however, involves impregnation with resins, such as phenolic adhesives, which delivery desirable quality to the panels due to their insolubility in water, resistance against heat among others, but are also recognized as carcinogenic to humans (IARC, 2004). This study involved measuring the levels of formaldehyde, remaining in wood panels after use and disposal. It was initially evaluated new panels and then examined degraded ones. The results demonstrated significant volatilization of formaldehyde during the degradation process of the panels, with losses of 74.83% for MDF and 85.71% for medium density particleboards (MDP). ABSTRACT Objectives: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of rectal cancer surgery, in a unit adopting the principles of total mesorectal excision (TME) with a high restorative procedure rate and with a low rate of abdominoperineal excision (APE). Methods: we enrolles patients with extraperitoneal rectal cancer undergoing TME or TME+APE. Patients with mid rectal tumors underwent TME, and patients with tumors of the lower rectum and no criteria for APE underwent TME and intersphincteric resection. Those in which the intersphincteric space was invaded and in those with a free distal margin less than 1cm or a tumor free radial margin were unattainable underwent APE or extralevator abdominoperineal excision (ELAPE). We assessed local recurrence rates, overall survival and involvement of the radial margin. Results: sixty (89.6%) patients underwent TME and seven (10.4%) TME + APE, of which five underwent ELAPE. The local recurrence, in pacientes undergoing TME+LAR, was 3.3% and in patients undergoing APE, 14.3%. The local recurrence rate (p=0.286) or the distant recurrence rate (p=1.000) was similar between groups. There was no involvement of radial margins. Survival after 120 months was similar (p=0.239). Conclusion: rectal malignancies, including those located in the low rectum, may be surgically treated with a low rate of APE without compromising oncological principles and with a low local recurrence rates.

RESUMO Objetivos: o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os resultados da cirurgia do câncer de reto, em uma unidade que adota os princípios da excisão total do mesorreto (ETM) com baixa taxa de amputação abdominoperineal (AAP). Métodos: os pacientes com câncer retal extraperitoneal foram submetidos a ETM ou ETM com amputação abdominoperianeal. Pacientes com tumores de reto médio foram submetidos a EMT e pacientes com tumores de reto inferior e sem critérios para AAP foram submetidos a EMT e ressecção interesfincteriana. Aqueles em que o espaço interesfincteriano foi invadido e naqueles com margem distal livre menor que 1cm ou margem radial livre de tumor foram inatingíveis foram submetidos a AAP ou excisão abdominoperineal extraelevadora (ELAPE). Avaliamos as taxas de recorrência local, sobrevida global e envolvimento da margem radial. Resultados: sessenta (89,6%) pacientes realizaram ETM e sete (10,4%) ETM + AAP, dos quais cinco realizaram ELAPE. A recidiva local, em pacientes submetidos a ETM com ressecção anterior baixa, foi de 3,3% e em pacientes submetidos a AAP, 14,3%. A taxa de recorrência local (p=0,286) ou a taxa de recorrência à distância (p=1,000) foi semelhante entre os grupos. Não houve envolvimento das margens radiais. A sobrevida após 120 meses foi semelhante (p=0,239). Conclusão: as neoplasias malignas retais, incluindo aquelas localizadas no reto baixo, podem ser tratadas cirurgicamente com baixo índice de AAP, sem comprometer os princípios oncológicos e com baixo índice de recorrência local.

OBJETIVO: Neste trabalho nós estimamos a produção de sedimentos para uma microbacia urbanizada e de pequeno porte, localizada em Sorocaba, Estado de São Paulo. Discutimos as principais causas que levaram ao cenário observado; MÉTODOS: Durante um ano, amostras de água e informações hidrológicas sobre o canal do rio foram coletadas num ponto de amostragem. Em laboratório, amostras foram secas em estufa (80 ºC) e o total de sólido suspenso foi pesado para cada amostra. Para a estimativa da produção de sedimentos nós usamos o método simplificado de Colby. A Razão de Transferência de Sedimentos (RTS) foi estimada por dois métodos: a razão relevo - comprimento e a razão de bifurcação. RESULTADOS: a produção anual de sedimento estimada para o período foi 1.636,1 toneladas. A produção específica de sedimentos foi 541.7 t.km- 2.ano -1. A carga de arraste foi a fração predominantemente produzida. RTS variou entre 60 e 66% de acordo com o método empregado. CONCLUSÕES: As principais forças que causam o desequilíbrio hidrossedimentológico são a falta de vegetação ciliar, o despejo de resíduos de construção civil em locais inadequados e o lançamento de esgoto não tratado. Portanto, se os três principais fatores fossem controlados, uma melhoria significativa na qualidade ambiental seriam obtidos, principalmente em relação à qualidade da água.

AIM: In this paper we estimate the sediment yield and other related information for a small urbanized watershed, located in Sorocaba, São Paulo State. The driving forces that produce the observed scenario are presented and discussed; METHODS: Over a year, water samples and hydrologic information concerning the river channel were collected monthly at one sampling site. In the laboratory, water samples were oven dried (80 ºC) and the total suspended solid weighed for each sample. To estimate sediment yield we used Colby's simplified method. The sediment delivery ratio (SDR) was estimated using two methods: the relief - length ratio and the bifurcation ratio; RESULTS: The annual sediment yield estimated for the period was 1,636.1 t. The total specific sediment yield was 541.7 t.km -2.y-1. Bedload was the predominant fraction. The SDR changed between 60 and 66% according to the method employed. CONCLUSIONS: The main driving forces of hydrosedimentological disequilibrium are the lack of riparian vegetation, the dumping of construction wastes at inadequate sites, and the launching of untreated sewage. Hence, if these three factors were controlled, a significant improvement in the environmental quality, particularly water quality, might be achieved.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a experiência dos primeiros 10 anos de transplante hepático em crianças e adolescentes do Serviço de Transplante Hepático do Instituto Alfa de Gastroenterologia do Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. MÉTODOS: Estudo descritivo de 84 pacientes menores de 18 anos inscritos em lista para transplante, no período de março de 1995 a janeiro de 2006, quanto às seguintes variáveis: idade, indicação do transplante, escores de gravidade (Child-Pugh, Malatack, PELD/MELD), tempo de espera em lista, complicações pós-operatórias e sobrevida. RESULTADOS: De 84 pacientes inscritos, 40 foram submetidos ao transplante, ocorrendo dois retransplantes. Vinte e seis faleceram na lista de espera. A atresia biliar foi a indicação mais freqüente. A mediana da idade no momento do transplante foi de 6,6 anos (variou de 1,9 a 16,8 anos). A mortalidade no pós-transplante foi de 32,5% (13 de 40 crianças). O tempo de espera em lista dos 40 pacientes transplantados apresentou mediana de 291 dias. As complicações relacionadas ao enxerto ocorreram em 24 dos 42 transplantes (57,1%), sendo que as vasculares representaram 30,8%, prevalecendo a trombose da artéria hepática (16,6%); episódio de rejeição aguda ocorreu em 16,6% dos casos. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados encontrados são semelhantes ao que é observado na literatura em relação às indicações e sobrevida no pós-transplante. No entanto, houve elevada taxa de complicações não relacionadas ao enxerto e daquelas relacionadas à artéria hepática.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the first 10 years' experience of the liver transplantation department at the Alfa Institute, Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil. METHODS: A descriptive study, based on a retrospective analysis of 84 children and adolescents enrolled on a liver transplantation waiting list, from March 1995 to January 2006, based on the following variables: age, etiology of underlying liver disease, Child-Pugh, Malatack, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) and pediatric end-stage liver disease (PELD) scores, time on waiting list, complications and survival after the procedure. RESULTS: Forty children had 42 liver transplants. Twenty six died while on the waiting list. Biliary atresia was the most frequent indication for transplant. The median age was 6.6 years (ranging from 1.9 to 16.8 years). Post liver transplant mortality was 32.5% (13 of 40 children). The median time on the liver transplant waiting list was 291 days. Complications related to the graft occurred in 24 of 42 transplants (57.1%), including vascular complications (30.8%), with thrombosis of the hepatic artery being the most frequent (16.6%); acute rejection occurred in 16.6%. CONCLUSIONS: The overall results are similar to what can be found in the literature with relation to indications and post-transplant survival. However, there were elevated rates of complications unrelated to the graft and of complications involving the hepatic artery.
