Oral mucositis (OM) is a common and dose-limiting side effect of cancer treatment, including 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and radiotherapy. The efficacy of the therapeutic measures to prevent OM is limited and disease prevention is not fully observable. Amifostine is a cytoprotective agent with a described anti-inflammatory potential. It is clinically used to reduce radiotherapy and chemotherapy-associated xerostomia. This study investigated the protective effect of amifostine on an experimental model of OM. Hamsters were divided into six groups: saline control group (5 mL/kg), mechanical trauma (scratches) of the right cheek pouch; 5-FU (60 and 40 mg/kg, ip, respectively, administered on days 1 and 2); amifostine (12.5, 25, or 50 mg/kg) + 5-FU + scratches. Salivation rate was assessed and the animals were euthanized on day 10 for the analysis of macroscopic and microscopic injury by scores. Tissue samples were harvested for the measurement of neutrophil infiltration and detection of inflammatory markers by ELISA and immunohistochemistry. 5-FU induced pronounced hyposalivation, which was prevented by amifostine (P<0.05). In addition, 5-FU injection caused pronounced tissue injury accompanied by increased neutrophil accumulation, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) tissue levels, and positive immunostaining for TNF-α, IL-1β, and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Interestingly, amifostine prevented the inflammatory reaction and consequently improved macroscopic and microscopic damage (P<0.05 vs 5-FU group). Amifostine reduced inflammation and protected against 5-FU-associated oral mucositis and hyposalivation.

RESUMO O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da condição corporal (CC) ao parto no balanço energético (BE) e o desempenho reprodutivo de cabras Alpinas no pós-parto. Foram utilizadas 68 cabras distribuídas em três grupos (G), sendo: G1- cabras com baixa CC (CC entre 1,5 e 2,5); G2: cabras com moderada CC (entre 2,75 e 3,5) e G3: cabras com alta CC (entre 3,75 e 5,0). Os animais receberam dieta (silagem de milho e concentrado, com 18% de proteína bruta e 1,7Mcal/kg de matéria seca de energia líquida) ad libitum. As avaliações foram feitas nas oito primeiras semanas de lactação, para determinação do BE, do intervalo do parto à primeira ovulação e ao primeiro estro e da concentração plasmática de progesterona. Os dados foram analisados por análise de variância a 5% de probabilidade. Não houve efeito da CC ao parto sobre o BE dos animais. Todas as cabras apresentaram BE negativo ao parto, com mudança para BE positivo aos 51, 58 e 64 dias pós-parto, respectivamente. Não houve diferença na concentração plasmática de progesterona nos três grupos, sendo caracterizada função luteal (concentração ≥1ng/dL) em apenas 5,9% dos animais avaliados. O intervalo do parto à primeira ovulação foi de 46 dias. Apenas 4,4% das cabras exibiram estro. Cabras leiteiras de média produção, entre 2,5 e 3,0kg de leite/dia, entram em BE negativo ao parto, independentemente da CC apresentada, influenciando negativamente o reinício da atividade ovariana no pós-parto.

ABSTRACT The concentration of progesterone in the blood was used to study the effect of body condition score (BCS) on the post-partum ovarian activity of dairy goats. Sixty-eight female goats were distributed between three treatments. Treatment 1: goats with BCS between 1.00 and 2.75; Treatment 2: goats with BCS between 2.75 and 3.50; and Treatment 3: goats with BCS between 3.50 and 5.00. The goats had the blood collected immediately after birth, and from that time up to the eighth week post-partum at three day intervals. The progesterone analysis on the blood was used to determine the interval between the birth and the first ovulation. The females were teasing two times per day for estrus detection and determination of the time interval from birth to first estrus. No significant difference was found on the progesterone concentration between treatments. The luteal functionality was characterized in only 5.9% of goats, with a concentration higher than 1ng/mL. The period from birth to first ovulation was 46 days. The detectable estrus was found in only 4.4% of goats. The BCS at birth did not influence the recovery of ovarian activity of dairy goats.

Objetivou-se avaliar os níveis de glicerina bruta (GB), 0, 20, 40, 60 e 80g/kg de matéria seca (MS) de silagem de sorgo sobre a cinética da fermentação, 0, 30, 60 e 90g/kg de MS de silagem sobre a cinética de degradação da fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), e os níveis 0, 17, 33, 55 e 70g/kg de MS de silagem sobre o consumo e a digestibilidade da MS, os compostos nutricionais e o balanço de nitrogênio em cordeiros. O volume e a taxa de degradação dos carboidratos não fibrosos (Vcnf) e (Kdcnf), respectivamente, apresentaram comportamento quadrático, sendo estimado Vcnf máximo (126,62mL/g de MS) e Kdcnf mínima (0,0782/h) para inclusão de 54,85g e 58,75g GB/kg de MS, respectivamente. Já o tempo de colonização (L), apresentou um decréscimo linear de 0,013h para cada 10g de GB/kg de MS. Houve redução linear de 0,996% na degradação para fração B. Não houve efeito significativo da inclusão de GB sobre o consumo e a digestibilidade da MS, os compostos nutricionais e o balanço de nitrogênio. A utilização de GB entre 50 e 70g/kg de MS em dietas à base de silagem de sorgo pode ser fonte alternativa de energia para cordeiros.

This study aimed to assess the levels of crude glycerin (CG) 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80g/kg of dry matter (DM) of sorghum silage on fermentation kinetics, 0, 30, 60 and 90g/kg DM silage on the kinetics of degradation of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and levels 0, 17, 33, 55 and 70g/kg DM silage on intake and digestibility of DM and nutritional compounds and nitrogen balance in lambs. The volume and rate of digestion of non-fiber carbohydrates (Vcnf) and (Kdcnf), respectively, showed a quadratic Vcnf being estimated maximum (126.62mL/g DM) and Kdcnf minimum (0.0782/h) for inclusion of 54.85 CG 58.75g/kg DM, respectively. Since the time of colonization (L), they presented a linear decrease of 0.013h for each 10g CG/kg. DM linearly decreased from 0.996% degradation for fraction B. There was no significant effect of the inclusion of CG on the intake and dry matter digestibility and nutritional compounds and nitrogen balance. The use of 50CG to 70g/kg DM in diets based on sorghum silage can be an alternative energy source for sheep.

Estudou-se o efeito do Hormônio do Crescimento bovino (bGH) sobre os parâmetros seminais e a concentração sérica de testosterona de touros da raça Nelore. Dezesseis touros foram distribuídos em um delineamento fatorial 2 x 2 (duas idades e dois níveis de r-bST), com quatro animais em cada tratamento. As aplicações de r-bST foram realizadas a cada 14 dias, totalizando nove aplicações por animal, em um período experimental de 120 dias. As coletas de sêmen foram realizadas a cada 15 dias e, para determinar as concentrações de testosterona, foram realizadas coletas de sangue a cada quatro horas, num total de 24 horas, e a cada 30 dias a partir da primeira aplicação de r-bST. O sêmen dos touros adultos tratados com r-bST apresentaram maior motilidade e vigor (P<0,05) em relação aos animais controles (79,70±11,56% vs 64,06±23,65%) e (3,80±0,88 vs 2,92±1,25), respectivamente; entretanto, as demais características seminais não foram influenciadas (P>0,05) pelo tratamento com r-bST. Os aspectos físicos do sêmen dos touros jovens não foram afetados (P>0,05) pelo tratamento com r-bST. Entretanto o tratamento com r-bST diminuiu os defeitos morfológicos menores (delgado, gigante normal, pequeno normal, globoso, cabeça isolada normal, abaxial, cauda dobrada e enrolada levemente e gota distal) em relação aos jovens não tratados (P<0,05). As concentrações séricas de testosterona foram influenciadas (P<0,05) pelo tratamento, aos 120 dias após a primeira aplicação do r-bST, e apresentaram tendência de três picos no período de 24 horas.

The aim of this trial was to study the effect of Growth Hormone (GH) on the seminal parameters and testosterone profile from Nellore bulls. Sixteen bulls were allocated in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (two ages and two r-bST levels), with four animals per treatment. The r-bST was injected every 14 days, with a total of nine injections per animal, during the 120 days of the experimental period. The semen collections were done every 15 days and blood samples were collected in four hour intervals for 24 hours, and in 30 day intervals from the first r-bST injection for testosterone profile. The semen of adult bulls treated with r-bST showed greater MOT and VIG (P<0.05) in relation to the control (79.70±11.56% vs 64.06±23.65%) and (3.80±0.88 vs 2.92±1.25) respectively; however, the other evaluated seminal parameters were not affected (P>0.05) by the r-bST treatment. The physical measurements of the semen of young animals was also unaffected (P>0.05) by r-bST injection. However, the treatment with r-bST decreased the number of minor morphologic defects (narrow head, giant head, small normal head, round head, free normal head, abaxial implantation, simple bent tail and distal droplet) compared to untreated young bulls (P<0.05). The serum testosterone concentration was influenced (P<0.05) by treatment, at 120 days after the first injection of r-bST and they showed a tendency of three picks in a 24 hour period of sampling

Avaliou-se o efeito da injeção de somatotropina bovina recombinante (r-bST) sobre o ciclo estral de cabras. Foram utilizadas 24 fêmeas da raça Toggenburg, distribuídas em dois tratamentos: T1 (n=12), cabras tratadas com r-bST; e T2 (n=12), cabras tratadas com solução salina (controle). A partir da primeira injeção do tratamento, acompanhou-se o ciclo dos animais em estro até o estro subseqüente. O comprimento médio do ciclo estral e o período interovulatório não diferiram (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos. Foram verificados ciclos estrais de duas, três e quatro ondas de crescimento folicular. Não houve diferença (P>0,05) entre os tratamentos quanto ao número de ondas do ciclo estral. O número de folículos detectados com diâmetro >3mm nas cabras do T1 foi maior (P<0,05) que naquelas do T2 nos ciclos com duas (15,3±1,2 x 8,1±2,0), três (12,2±0,8 x 8,3±1,9) e quatro (12,7±1,7 x 8,8±2,5) ondas. O folículo dominante da segunda onda foi menor (P<0,05) que o da primeira e terceira ondas e também menor que o da onda ovulatória tanto para T1 quanto para T2. A concentração sérica de progesterona durante o ciclo estral não foi influenciada pelos tratamentos com r-bST (P>0,05). A r-bST não alterou a dinâmica folicular de cabras lactantes da raça Toggenburg, mas promoveu o aumento do número de folículos recrutados ³3mm durante o ciclo estral.

The effect of the r-bST injection was evaluated on the goats estrous cycles. Twenty-four Toggenburg does were used in two treatments: T1 (n=12) treated with r-bST; and T2 (n=12) treated with saline solution (control). After the first r-bST injection, the estrous cycles were checked between two estrus. The estrous cycle length and interovulatory period of the goats did not differ between treatments (P>0.05). Estrous cycles with two, three and four waves of follicular growth were observed. The number of waves during the estrous cycle were not affected by the r-bST treatment (P>0.05). The number of 3mm follicles was different between T1 and T2 (P<0.05) for estrous cycles with two (15.3±1.2 x 8.1±2.0), three (12.2±0.8 x 8.3±1.9) or four (12.7±1.7 x 8.8±2.5) waves. The dominant follicle of the second wave was smaller (P<0.05) than the one of the first and third waves and smaller than the one of the ovulatory wave. The progesterone concentration during the estrous cycle of the animals did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments. The r-bST did not affect the ovarian response during the estrous cycle. The r-bST not affected the follicular dynamic of Toggenburg lactating does, but increased the number of emerging follicles >3mm during the estrous cycle.

In this paper we discuss the semiclassical approximation for the thermodynamics of scalar fields. We construct a semiclassical propagator in terms of two solutions of an ordinary differential equation. The main result is an analytic (non-perturbative) expression for the partition function written in terms of known quantities.

Estudou-se o efeito da estação do ano na dinâmica folicular e no momento de ovulação utilizando-se 25 vacas não lactantes da raça Gir (10 no inverno e 15 no verão) e 15 vacas não lactantes da raça Nelore (sete no inverno e oito no verão), todas com ciclo estral normal. Após a detecção do estro, as vacas foram submetidas a exames ultra-sonográficos a cada seis horas com a finalidade de monitorar o momento de ovulação e, posteriormente, uma vez ao dia durante todo o ciclo estral, sendo monitorado um ciclo estral por animal e por estação do ano. As características foliculares não foram afetadas pela estação do ano e não diferiram entre as raças. Houve maior percentagem de ciclos com três (68,0 e 66,7%) e duas ondas foliculares (24,0 e 26,7%) nas raças Gir e Nelore, respectivamente. Os intervalos entre estros e entre ovulações foram menores para ciclos com duas ondas foliculares. A manifestação do estro ocorreu mais nas primeiras horas da manhã (57,3%) e no final da tarde e início da noite (28,0%). O momento de ovulação ocorreu 23,1±5,6 horas após a detecção do estro nas duas raças.

Season effect on follicular dynamic and ovulation time were studied on 25 non-lactating Gir cows (10 cows in the winter and 15 in the summer) and 15 non-lactating Nelore cows (7cows in the winter and 8 in the summer) exhibiting normal estrus cycles. After estrus detection cows were submitted to ultrasound examination every six hours to determine the time of ovulation, and after that, the examinations were performed once-a-day throughout the estrus cycle for each season. No effect of breed and season on follicular characteristics was observed. The follicular dynamic was characterized by the predominance of three (68.0 and 66.7%) and two (24.0 and 26.7%) follicular waves for Gir and Nelore cows, respectively. The estrus-to-ovulation intervals were shorter for cycles with two follicular waves. Most estrus signs were detected in the morning (57.3%) and late afternoon (28.0%). On average, Gir and Nelore cows ovulated 23 hours after estrus onset.

Estudou-se a influência da libido de touros sobre as taxas de gestação de vacas aos 30, 60 e 90 dias de estação de monta, e avaliaram-se as correlações entre concentração de testosterona, qualidade seminal e libido. Foram selecionados 12 touros (exame andrológico e teste da libido), distribuídos nos tratamentos: T1 e T2, três com libido baixa e três com libido alta, respectivamente, na proporção touro:vaca de 1:75, e T3 e T4, três com libido baixa e três com libido alta, respectivamente, na proporção de 1:100. Não houve diferença entre touros quanto à concentração de testosterona no soro. Touros com alta libido na proporção 1:75 proporcionaram maior taxa de gestação aos 60 e 90 dias (90,6 e 94,6%, respectivamente) da estação de monta em relação aos de libido baixa na mesma proporção (80,0 e 86,2%, respectivamente). A libido dos touros na proporção 1:100 não influenciou a taxa de gestação. Não se observou efeito da proporção touro:vaca sobre a taxa de gestação e não se observou correlação entre libido, qualidade seminal, circunferência escrotal e concentração sérica de testosterona.

The effect of the libido of the bulls on pregnancy rates at 30, 60 and 90 days of the breeding season was studied, and the correlations between the serum testosterone levels, seminal quality and libido were estimated. Twelve bulls selected by andrologic evaluation and by the libido test, were randomly allotted to: treatments T1 and T2, three low libido bulls and three high libido bulls, respectively, in the bull:cow proportion of 1:75; and treatments T3 and T4, three low libido bulls and three high libido bulls, respectively, in the proportion of 1:100. No differences among bulls based on the serum testosterone levels were observed. Bulls with high libido (proportion 1:75) provided larger pregnancy rate at 60 and 90 days (90.6 and 94.6%, respectively) of the breeding season, than low libido bulls in the same proportion (80.0 and 86.2%, respectively). The libido of the bulls in the proportion 1:100 had no effect on the pregnancy rates. The effect of bull:cow proportion on the pregnancy rate was not significant and no correlations between libido, seminal quality, scrotal circumference and serum testosterone levels were observed.

O objetivo do experimento foi o de estudar as concentrações plasmáticas de colesterol total e lipoproteína de alta densidade (HDL) em novilhas mestiças tratadas com somatotropina bovina recombinante (rbST). Coletas de sangue foram feitas durante dois ciclos estrais, normal e superovulado, em 26 fêmeas distribuídas em dois tratamentos: T1 = aplicação de 500mg de rbST no terceiro dia do ciclo estral utilizado para a superovulação e T2 = controle. Análises dos metabólitos sangüíneos foram feitas utilizando-se o método enzimático, cujas concentrações médias plasmáticas de colesterol total e de HDL durante o ciclo estral normal não foram diferentes (P>0,05) entre os dois tratamentos: 87,9 e 25,8mg/dl e 85,9 e 26,7mg/dl para T1 e T2, respectivamente. O ciclo estral utilizado para a superovulação foi dividido em três períodos: P1 = do estro à inseminação artificial (0 ao15º dia), P2 = da inseminação artificial até a coleta de embriões (15º ao 21º dia) e P3 = da coleta até o final do período experimental (21º ao 27º dia). As concentrações plasmáticas de colesterol total e HDL no P1 não diferiram entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Em P2 e P3 houve diferença nas concentrações de HDL e colesterol total entre os dois tratamentos: 29,0 e 88,5mg/dl (T1) e 27,1 e 81,8mg/dl (T2) no P2; e 30,4 e 88,0mg/dl (T1) e 26,6 e 80,5mg/dl (T2) no P3, respectivamente (P<0,01).

The objective of the experiment was to study the total cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels in crossbred heifers treated with bovine recombinant somatotropina (rbST). Blood samples were collected for two estrous cycles, normal and superovulated, from 26 animals randomly distributed into two treatments: T1 - injected with 500mg rbST on day 3 of estrous cycle and T2 - control. The lipidic metabolite levels were determined by an enzymatic method, and plasma levels of total cholesterol and HDL in normal estrous cycle did not differ (P>0.05) between treatments: 87.9 and 25.8mg/dl for T1 and 85.9 and 26.7mg/dl for T2, respectively. The superovulated estrous cycle was divided into three periods: P1 - from estrus to artificial insemination (AI) (0 to 15th day), P2 - from AI to embryo collection (15th to 21st day) and P3 - from collection to the end of the experiment (21st to 27th day). The rbST treatment did not affect the HDL and cholesterol levels in the P1 (P>0.05), but did so in P2 and P3: 29.0 and 88.5mg/dl (T1) and 27.1 and 81.8mg/dl (T2) during P2; 30.4 and 88.0mg/dl (T1) and 26.6 and 80.5mg/dl (T2) during P3, respectively (P<0.01).

O estudo do crescimento folicular ovariano foi realizado em 26 novilhas mestiças Holandês-Zebu, por meio de acompanhamento ultra-sonográfico diário a partir do dia do estro, por um ou dois ciclos estrais consecutivos. Foram medidos os diâmetros do maior e segundo maior folículos presentes em cada ovário, detectando-se predominância de ciclos com três ondas de crescimento folicular (58,3%) sobre ciclos com duas ondas (33,3%). O início das ondas foi detectado nos dias 0,4 e 9,7 para os ciclos com duas ondas e nos dias 0,4, 8,2 e 15,9 para os ciclos com três ondas de crescimento folicular. Os diâmetros máximos dos folículos dominantes nos ciclos de duas ondas foram de 12,7 e 13,3mm e de 12,2, 10,0 e 11,7mm para os ciclos com três ondas. Para os folículos subordinados, os diâmetros médios foram de 7,0mm, independente do número de ondas. As taxas de crescimento folicular foram de 1,1 e 1,0mm/dia, e as taxas de atresia foram de 1,1 e 1,2mm/dia para os folículos dominantes e subordinados, respectivamente. Um animal apresentou quatro ondas de crescimento folicular, enquanto dois animais apresentaram um ciclo estral com apenas uma onda folicular.

Twenty-six crossbred heifers were used to study daily ovarian follicular growth by ultrasonography from the estrus, for one or two consecutive estrous cycles. The follicle diameters of the first and second large follicles were determined for each ovary. The follicular dynamic in crossbred heifer was characterized by the predominance of three follicular waves (58.3%), over the two waves (33.3%). For cycles with three waves, the waves 1, 2 and 3 could be detected on days 0.4, 8.2 and 15.9 and for cycles with two waves, the waves 1 and 2 begun, on average, on days 0.4 and 9.7. The dominant follicle maximum diameters were 12.7 and 13.3mm, and 12.2, 10.0 and 11.7mm, in the estrous cycles with two and three waves, respectively. The maximum diameter reached by the second largest follicle (subordinate) was 7.0mm, in the estrous cycle with two or three follicular waves. The growth rates (mm/day) for dominant and subordinate follicles were 1.1 and 1.0, and the atresia rates were 1.1 and 1.2, respectively. One heifer exhibited four follicular waves, while two others presented just one follicular wave.
