Abstract the focus ofthis study was to testthe hypothesisthatthere would be no difference betweenthe biocompatibility of silicon dioxide nanofilms used as antimicrobial agents. Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups (n=15): Group C (Control,Polyethylene), Group AR (Acrylic Resin), Group NP (Acrylic Resin coated with NP-Liquid), Group BG (Acrylic Resin coated with Bacterlon).the animals were sacrificed with 7,15 and 30 days and tissues analyzed as regardsthe events of inflammatory infiltrate, edema, necrosis, granulation tissue, mutinucleated giant cells, fibroblasts and collagen. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests was used (P<0.05). Intense inflammatory infiltrate was shown mainly in Groups BG and AR, with significant difference from Control Group inthe time interval of 7days (P=0.004). Necrosis demonstrated significant difference between Group BG and Control Group (P<0.05) inthe time intervals of 7 days. For collagen fibers, there was significant difference betweenthe Control Group and Groups AR and BG inthe time interval of 7 days (P=0.006), and between BG and Control Groups inthe time intervals of 15 days (P=0.010).the hypothesis was rejected. Bacterlon demonstratedthe lowest level, and NP-Liquid Glassthe highest level of tissue compatibility, and best cell repair.the coating with NP-Liquid Glass was demonstrated to be highly promising for clinical use.

Abstract This work aimed to study nickel-based oxygen carriers (OC) for Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) using H2 and CH4 as fuel. The reactivity and reaction kinetics of the OC were investigated, applying the shrinking core, nucleation and diffusion models in three dimensions, as well as whether the OC is thermodynamically favorable for the reaction. The results showed that the OC achieved high conversion for both fuels, proving to be quite reactive, while the fuel gas concentration and the temperature have a strong effect on the solids conversion. For the H2 combustion, the reaction rate can be described well by the shrinking core model, whereas for CH4 the nucleation model may better represent the experimental data. With respect to reactions that occur in the reduction reactor with the NiO/Ni redox system, it was observed that, for the investigated temperatures used in CLC, high values of the equilibrium constant were obtained, showing that practically complete conversion of the fuels is possible.

The transition period is a time of great challenge for dairy cows, since most metabolic problems occur at this time and can compromise the entire lactation, resulting in a significant economic loss to commercial farms. This study evaluated the metabolic profile of dairy cows during the transition period. Twelve Holstein cows between three weeks pre-calving until three weeks postpartum was used in this study. They remained in a free-stall system, located in Inhaúma, Minas Gerais, during October to December 2012. The metabolic profile were composed by non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), cholesterol (COLES), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), calcium, phosphorus, magnesium as well as the activity serum enzymes aspartate transaminase (AST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). There were differences in serum NEFA and BHBA between prepartum and postpartum (p<0.05). Observed a decrease in the concentration of COLES with the approaching birth with subsequent increase (p<0.05). Serum concentrations of minerals, PT and ALB did not differ (p>0.05). The enzymatic activity of AST and LDH were higher in the postpartum period (p<0.05). The evaluation of the metabolic profile is an important monitoring tool. Changes in the metabolic profile of cows during the transition period are motivated by energetic changing. Cows that were evaluated have a small risk of developing postpartum diseases related to the transition period

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic ethanol consumption is a major public health problem throughout the world. We investigated the anxiolytic-like effects and the possible ever injury induced by the chronic consumption of ethanol or sugarcane spirit in mice. METHOD: Adult mice were exposed to a two-bottle free-choice paradigm for 6 weeks. The mice in Group A (n = 16) had access to sugarcane spirit + distilled water, the mice in Group B (n = 15) had access to ethanol + distilled water, and the mice in Group C (control, n = 14) had access to distilled water + distilled water. The ethanol content in the beverages offered to Groups A and B was 2% for the first week, 5% for the second week and 10% for the remaining four weeks. At the end of the experimental period, the mice were evaluated using the elevated-plus maze and the hole-board test to assess their anxiety-related behaviors. We also determined the serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels. RESULTS: In the elevated-plus maze, the time spent in the open arms was increased in the mice exposed to chronic ethanol (32 + 8 vs. 7 + 2 s, n = 9) or sugarcane spirit (36 + 9 vs. 7 + 2 s, n = 9) compared to the controls. In the hole-board test, the mice exposed to ethanol or sugarcane spirit displayed increases in their head-dipping frequency (16 + 1 for the control group, 27 + 2 for the ethanol group, and 31 + 3 for the sugarcane-spirit group; n = 9 for each group). In addition, the mice exposed to sugarcane spirit displayed an increase in the aspartate aminotransferase / alanine aminotransferase ratio compared to the ethanol group (1.29 + 0.17 for the control group and 2.67 + 0.17 for the sugarcane spirit group; n = 8 for each group). CONCLUSION: The chronic consumption of sugarcane-spirit produces liver injury and anxiolytic-like effects and the possible liver injury in mice.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate risk factors for malnutrition, nutritional status and nutritional support provided in hospitalized children. METHODS: This longitudinal study prospectively followed, for 3 consecutive months, all children under 5 years of age (n = 907) hospitalized in general pediatric medical wards of 10 Brazilian university-based hospitals. For data collection, a standard questionnaire was used and nutritional condition was evaluated at hospital admission and discharge: weight-for-height, weight-for-age and height-for-age z score. RESULTS: Only 56.7% of the children had their nutritional classification documented in the medical record. At hospital admission, 16.3 and 30.0% of the children had moderate/severe malnutrition and low stature, respectively. Risk of malnutrition was associated with low birth weight and younger age. A high percentage of nutritional deficiencies was observed in the children analyzed, although child's nutritional condition and the adoption of appropriate nutritional therapy were not documented in the medical records of the malnourished children. CONCLUSION: These data underscore the importance of developing qualified hospital medical wards regarding diagnosis and therapeutic approach to malnutrition, based on the conduct guidelines already available in Brazil.

The continuous cultivation of the sugar cane for long-term under different management systems in soils of Coastal Tablelands can cause alterations in the organic matter and in the physical properties of the soil. The effects of different management systems with sugar cane on the properties of a Cohesive Yellow Argisol, in the Triunfo Sugar Cane Mill, in the State of Alagoas, Brazil, were studied. The management systems consisted of an irrigated area, an area not irrigated, an area with vinasse application and an area under native forest in original condition. Samples were collected from each area at 0-0.2, 0.2-0.4 and 0.4-0.8 m depths to determine the modification in the consistence limits, compaction parameters, stability of aggregates and physical fractions of the organic matter of the soil. The results indicated that the cultivation of sugar cane under not irrigated and irrigated systems promoted a more expressive reduction in the plasticity limit, optimum moisture for compaction and aggregate mean weight diameter, in relation to soil under native forest, due to reduction in the contents of total organic carbon and of particulate organic matter. The management system with vinasse application promoted smaller degradation in physical and chemical properties of the soil in relation to soil under native forest.

Alterations in the chemical conditions of the soil due to different soil management systems with sugarcane can cause modifications in clay dispersion and in the state of aggregation of the soil. The effects of different soil management systems with sugarcane on the physical and chemical properties of a cohesive Yellow Argisol were studied, being selected four different use and management systems, constituted of a site with irrigated cultivation, a site with not irrigated cultivation, a site with vinasse application and a site under native forest as original condition. Samples of each site were collected at 0-0,2, 0,2-0,4 and 0,4-0,8 m depths to determine the alterations in the chemical and physical properties of soil. The management systems with sugarcane affected the chemical properties of the soil, resulting in reduction of cation exchange capacity and increase of the electrical conductivity, pH in water and critical flocculation concentration. These chemical alterations resulted in larger clay dispersion in the soil cultivated with sugarcane, reducing the stability of the aggregates in water.
