Abstract Objective To evaluate the frequencies of iNKT cells and their subsets in patients with deep endometriosis. Methods A case-control study was conducted between 2013 and 2015, with 73 patients distributed into two groups: 47 women with a histological diagnosis of endometriosis and 26 controls. Peripheral blood, endometriosis lesions, and healthy peritoneal samples were collected on the day of surgery to determine the frequencies of iNKT cells and subtypes via flow cytometry analysis. Results The authors observed a lower number of iNKT (p= 0.01) and Double-Negative (DN) iNKT cells (p= 0.02) in the blood of patients with endometriosis than in the control group. The number of DN iNKT IL-17+ cells in the secretory phase was lower in the endometriosis group (p= 0.049). There was an increase in the secretion of IL-17 by CD4+ iNKT cells in the blood of patients with endometriosis and severe dysmenorrhea (p= 0.038), and severe acyclic pelvic pain (p= 0.048). Patients with severe dysmenorrhea also had a decreased number of CD4+ CCR7+ cells (p= 0.022). Conclusion The decreased number of total iNKT and DN iNKT cells in patients with endometriosis suggests that iNKT cells play a role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis and can be used to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic agents.

RESUMO Copaifera sabulicola é uma espécie endêmica da região centro-oeste da Bahia e extremo norte de Minas Gerais e ainda possui lacunas nas informações botânicas. O presente trabalho caracterizou anatomicamente o folíolo e peciólulo de C. sabulicola, com ênfase nas estruturas secretoras e histolocalizar as substâncias biologicamente ativas. Amostras de folhas foram fixadas em FNT, desidratadas em série etílica e incluídas em metacrilato. Os cortes histológicos foram corados com azul de toluidina e montados em lâmina permanente. Foram realizados testes histoquímicos e fitoquímicos, dissociação e diafanização da lâmina foliolar. Cavidades secretoras foram encontradas ao longo do mesofilo, nervura central e peciólulo. Foram observados feixes vasculares circundados por bainha fibrosa e cutícula ornamentada na nervura central e no bordo foliolar. Nos testes histoquímicos foram detectados compostos fenólicos, alcaloides, proteínas e lipídios estruturais, e na análise fitoquímica, taninos catéquicos, flavonas, flavonois, xantonas, esteroides e terpenois. Tais caracteres auxiliam na correta identificação da espécie.

ABSTRACT Copaifera sabulicola is an endemic species of the central-western region of Bahia and extreme north of Minas Gerais and still has gaps in botanical information. The present work anatomically characterized the leaflet and petiolule of C. sabulicola, with emphasis on the secretory structures and histolocalized the biologically active substances. Leaf samples were fixed in FNT, dehydrated in ethyl series and included in methacrylate. The histological sections were stained with toluidine blue and mounted on a permanent slide. Histochemical and phytochemical tests, dissociation and diaphanization of foliolar lamina were performed. Secretory cavities were found along the mesophyll, the central vein and the petiole. Vascular bundles surrounded by fibrous sheath and ornate cuticle were observed in the central vein and foliolar border. Phenolic compounds, alkaloids, proteins and structural lipids were detected in the histochemical tests, and in the phytochemical analysis, cathectic tannins, flavones, flavonoids, xanthones, steroids and terpenoids were detected. These characters help in the correct identification of the species.

RESUMO O uso da serapilheira de espécies da Caatinga, na recuperação de solos degradados, é uma alternativa interessante, por contribuir para o retorno de nutrientes para o solo e favorecer a ciclagem de elementos e a melhoria da fertilidade. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, mensurar os efeitos da aplicação de doses da fração folhas, da serapilheira de oito espécies da Caatinga, sobre a fertilidade de um solo degradado e a produção de sorgo. Adotou-se delineamento em blocos casualizados, com cinco tratamentos e cinco repetições, com doses de serapilheira, equivalentes a 0, 15, 30, 60 e 120 kg ha-1 de N, por espécie. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se um Planossolo Nátrico Órtico coletado em área degradada do município de Irauçuba, CE. Coletaram-se folhas, sem sinal de decomposição, de Combretum leprosum Mart., Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth., Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir., Libidibia ferrea (Mart. ExTul.) L.P. Queiroz, Poncianella piramydalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz, Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart, Cordia oncocalyx Allemão e Croton sonderianus Muell. Arg. Aos 75 dias após a germinação, realizou-se o corte das plantas, sua secagem e a quantificação da matéria seca e a análise de N-total e do acúmulo de N. A amostragem do solo foi feita após o corte do sorgo. O incremento das doses dos resíduos de mofumbo, jucá, catingueira, pereiro e pau-branco elevou as concentrações de P, K, Ca e Mg, o resíduo de marmeleiro acidificou o solo. Jurema e pau-branco elevaram a produção de biomassa do sorgo e o acúmulo de N.

ABSTRACT The use of litterfall of Caatinga species in the recovery of degraded soils is an interesting alternative to contribute to the return of nutrients to the soil, favoring the cycling of elements and the improvement of fertility. The aim was to measure the effects of the application of leaf litter fraction of eight Caatinga species on the fertility of a degraded soil and the production of sorghum, which was the plant tested. A completely randomized block design with five treatments and five replications was used, with litterfall doses equivalent to 0, 15, 30, 60, and 120 kg ha-1 of N for each species. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a Planosol collected in a degraded area in Irauçuba - CE, Brazil. We collected leaves of Combretum leprosum Mart., Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth., Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir., Libidibia férrea (Mart. ExTul.) L.P. Queiroz, Poncianella piramydalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz, Aspidosperma pyrifolium Mart, Cordia oncocalyx Allemão, and Croton sonderianus Muell. Arg., with no sign of decomposition. At 75 days following germination, the plants were cut and dried in an oven for the quantification of the dry mass and total N and N accumulation analysis. Soil sampling was performed after sorghum cutting. The increment of doses from residues of mofumbo, jucá, catingueira, pereiro, and pau-branco increased the concentrations of P, K, Ca, and Mg, thus increasing the soil CEC; the marmeleiro residue acidified the soil. Grain sorghum that received litterfall from jurema and pau-branco had greater biomass and N accumulation.

Resumo: Este estudo investigou e caracterizou as galhas de uma área de Campo rupestre e de Cerrado no município de Caetité (BA) no período de agosto de 2015 a junho de 2016. Esta é a primeira contribuição para o conhecimento da diversidade de galhas de Campo rupestre neste estado. Foram registrados 48 morfotipos de galhas distribuídas em 17 espécies distintas, pertencentes a 13 gêneros e 21 famílias de plantas hospedeiras. A maior riqueza de galhas foi observada no Cerrado (n=39), quando comparada com o Campo rupestre (n=9). As famílias botânicas mais ricas em galhas foram Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae e Myrtaceae, com 10, 8 e 4 morfotipos, respectivamente. Os gêneros com maior diversidade de galhas foram Copaifera L. (n=6) (Leguminosae-Detarioideae), Croton L. (n=2) (Euphorbiaceae), Mimosa L. (n=2) (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), Byrsonima Rich. ex Kunth (n=2) (Malpighiaceae) e Eugenia L. (n=2) (Myrtaceae). A espécie super-hospedeira foi Copaifera sabulicola J.A.S. Costa & L.P. Queiroz (n= 5). A maioria das galhas ocorreu nas folhas, sendo globoides, glabras, isoladas e uniloculares. A maioria dos indutores pertence à família Cecidomyiidae, enquanto que a fauna associada está representada por Hymenoptera e Lepidoptera. Foram registradas pela primeira vez galhas em Ocotea velutina (Mart. ex Ness) Rohwer (Lauraceae) e Miconia alborufescens Naudin (Melastomataceae). Os resultados encontrados indicam a necessidade de mais estudos para entender a dinâmica dos insetos indutores de galhas em Campos rupestres.

Abstract: We investigated insect galls in Rupestrian field and Cerrado vegetation in the municipality of Caetité (BA), Brazil, between August/2015 and June/2016. This is the first study of gall diversity in Rupestrian field vegetation in that state. We encountered 48 different morphotypes of galls, distributed among 17 different plant species belonging to 13 genera and 21 host plant families. The greatest gall richness was observed in Cerrado (n=39) as compared to Rupestrian field (n=9) vegetation. The principal botanical families observed with galls were Leguminosae, Malpighiaceae, and Myrtaceae, with 10, 8 and 4 morphotypes, respectively. The genera showing the greatest gall diversity were Copaifera L. (n=6) (Leguminosae-Detarioideae), Croton L. (n=2) (Euphorbiaceae), Mimosa L. (n=2) (Leguminosae-Caesalpinioideae), Byrsonima Rich. ex Kunth (n=2) (Malpighiaceae), and Eugenia L. (n=2) (Myrtaceae). The super-host species was Copaifera sabulicola J.A.S. Costa & L.P. Queiroz (n= 5). Most galls occurred on leaves, being globoid, glabrous, isolated, and unilocular. Most gall-inducing insect species belong to the Cecidomyiidae family, while the associated fauna was represented by Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera. We recorded here for the first time galls on Ocotea velutina (Mart. ex Ness) Rohwer (Lauraceae) and Miconia alborufescens Naudin (Melastomataceae). The results indicate the need for more studies to understand the dynamics of the insect-induced galls in Rupestrian field.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de culturas de cobertura na supressão das plantas daninhas em sistemas de produção de soja sob plantio direto, em Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso. O experimento foi realizado em área experimental e consistiu na avaliação de nove tratamentos de cobertura e manejo do solo em delineamento de blocos casualizados. Os tratamentos foram: pousio PD, pousio PC, Crotalaria spectabilis, Crotalaria breviflora, milho + Crotalaria spectabilis, Pennisetum glaucum, Urochloa ruziziensis, Cajanus cajan, girassol + Urochloa ruziziensis, Stylosanthes, Vigna unguiculata, Urochloa brizantha e milho + Urochloa ruziziensis. As avaliações foram realizadas antes da dessecação para semeadura da soja nas safras (23/10/2014 e 21/09/2015), antes da pós-emergência da soja (09/12/2014 e 12/11/2015) e na safrinha (12/06/2015). A área útil foi de 5 x 5 m, e foram contabilizadas e identificadas todas as plantas daninhas, porém somente as quatro espécies com maior densidade populacional foram coletadas. As plantas daninhas avaliadas foram: Digitaria horizontalis, Digitaria insularis, Porophyllum ruderale e Tridax procumbens. Os tratamentos com pousio apresentaram maior população de plantas daninhas em relação aos demais, em todas as épocas de avaliação. Digitaria horizontalis apresentou a maior produção de fitomassa na maioria das épocas de avaliação. Os sistemas de produção com Urochloa ruziziensis, Pennisetum glaucum, Crotalaria spectabilis e os consórcios com milho + Urochloa ruziziensis, girassol + Urochloa ruziziensis e milho + Crotalaria spectabilis foram as melhores alternativas para o manejo integrado de plantas daninhas, por reduzirem a incidência e aumentarem o controle das principais espécies que foram detectadas durante a condução do experimento.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of cover crops on weed suppression in no-tillage soybean production systems in Rondonopolis, Mato Grosso. The experiment was carried out in an experimental area and consisted of the evaluation of nine cover treatments and soil management in a randomized complete block design. The treatments were: NT fallow, CT fallow, Crotalaria spectabilis, Crotalaria breviflora, maize + Crotalaria spectabilis, Pennisetum glaucum, Urochloa ruziziensis, Cajanus cajan, sunflower + Urochloa ruziziensis, Stylosanthes, Vigna unguiculata, Urochloa brizantha, maize + Urochloa ruziziensis. The evaluations were carried out before the desiccation for soybean sowing in the crops (10/23/2014) and (09/21/2015), before the post-emergence of soybean (09/12/2014) and (12/11/2015) and in the second season (12/06/2015). The useful area was 5 x 5 m and all weeds were counted and identified, but only the four species with the largest population were collected. The weeds evaluated were: Digitaria horizontalis, Digitaria insularis, Porophyllum ruderale and Tridax procumbens. Fallow treatments presented higher weed populations in relation to the others, in all periods of evaluation. Digitaria horizontalis presented the highest phytomass production in most seasons. The production systems with Urochloa ruziziensis, Pennisetum glaucum, Crotalaria spectabilis and intercropped with maize + Urochloa ruziziensis, sunflower + Urochloa ruziziensis and maize + Crotalaria spectabilis were the best alternatives for integrated weed management, reducing the incidence and increasing control of the main species that were detected during the conduction of the experiment.

Resumo: Os testes rápidos têm sido imprescindíveis na avaliação do potencial fisiológico de sementes, sendo o de tetrazólio um dos que vêm sendo empregados pelas empresas produtoras de sementes. Assim, objetivou-se estabelecer o procedimento adequado para o teste de tetrazólio em sementes de Libidibia ferrea (Mart. ex Tul.) L.P. Queiroz var. ferrea. Para isso, testaram-se três concentrações da solução de tetrazólio (0,05; 0,075 e 0,1%) e três períodos de coloração (1, 3 e 6 horas) sob as temperaturas de 35 e 40 ºC. As sementes também foram avaliadas pelo teste de germinação visando a comparação com a viabilidade obtida pelo teste de tetrazólio. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 + 1 (três concentrações x três períodos + uma testemunha = teste de germinação), para cada temperatura. As médias de sementes viáveis no teste de tetrazólio foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey (p ≤ 0,05), enquanto a comparação entre as médias de sementes viáveis com o teste de germinação foi realizada pelo teste de Dunnett (p ≤ 0,05). Recomenda-se que o teste de tetrazólio para L. ferrea seja realizado na concentração de 0,05% por três horas de coloração, sob 35 °C ou 40 °C.

Abstract: Rapid tests have been essential to evaluate the physiological potential of seeds and the tetrazolium test is one of those which have been used by seed companies. The objective of the study was to establish the procedure for the tetrazolium test in Libidibia ferrea (Mart. Ex Tul.) L.P. Queiroz var. ferrea seeds. For this, three tetrazolium solution concentrations (0.05, 0.075 and 0.1%) and three staining periods (1, 3 and 6 hours) at temperatures of 35 to 40 °C were tested. The seeds were also evaluated by the germination test, whose result was compared with viability by the tetrazolium test. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial design 3 x 3 + 1 (three concentrations x three periods + a control = germination test) for each temperature. Viable seeds in the tetrazolium test were compared by Tukey’s test (p ≤ 0.05), while the comparison between the viable seeds with germination test was carried out by Dunnett’s test (p ≤ 0.05). It is recommended that the tetrazolium test for L. ferrea is carried out at a concentration of 0.05% for three-hour staining under 35 °C or 40 °C.

RESUMO O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da condição corporal (CC) ao parto no balanço energético (BE) e o desempenho reprodutivo de cabras Alpinas no pós-parto. Foram utilizadas 68 cabras distribuídas em três grupos (G), sendo: G1- cabras com baixa CC (CC entre 1,5 e 2,5); G2: cabras com moderada CC (entre 2,75 e 3,5) e G3: cabras com alta CC (entre 3,75 e 5,0). Os animais receberam dieta (silagem de milho e concentrado, com 18% de proteína bruta e 1,7Mcal/kg de matéria seca de energia líquida) ad libitum. As avaliações foram feitas nas oito primeiras semanas de lactação, para determinação do BE, do intervalo do parto à primeira ovulação e ao primeiro estro e da concentração plasmática de progesterona. Os dados foram analisados por análise de variância a 5% de probabilidade. Não houve efeito da CC ao parto sobre o BE dos animais. Todas as cabras apresentaram BE negativo ao parto, com mudança para BE positivo aos 51, 58 e 64 dias pós-parto, respectivamente. Não houve diferença na concentração plasmática de progesterona nos três grupos, sendo caracterizada função luteal (concentração ≥1ng/dL) em apenas 5,9% dos animais avaliados. O intervalo do parto à primeira ovulação foi de 46 dias. Apenas 4,4% das cabras exibiram estro. Cabras leiteiras de média produção, entre 2,5 e 3,0kg de leite/dia, entram em BE negativo ao parto, independentemente da CC apresentada, influenciando negativamente o reinício da atividade ovariana no pós-parto.

ABSTRACT The concentration of progesterone in the blood was used to study the effect of body condition score (BCS) on the post-partum ovarian activity of dairy goats. Sixty-eight female goats were distributed between three treatments. Treatment 1: goats with BCS between 1.00 and 2.75; Treatment 2: goats with BCS between 2.75 and 3.50; and Treatment 3: goats with BCS between 3.50 and 5.00. The goats had the blood collected immediately after birth, and from that time up to the eighth week post-partum at three day intervals. The progesterone analysis on the blood was used to determine the interval between the birth and the first ovulation. The females were teasing two times per day for estrus detection and determination of the time interval from birth to first estrus. No significant difference was found on the progesterone concentration between treatments. The luteal functionality was characterized in only 5.9% of goats, with a concentration higher than 1ng/mL. The period from birth to first ovulation was 46 days. The detectable estrus was found in only 4.4% of goats. The BCS at birth did not influence the recovery of ovarian activity of dairy goats.

Erythropoietin (EPO) has been well characterized as a renal glycoprotein hormone regulating red blood cell production by inhibiting apoptosis of erythrocyte progenitors in hematopoietic tissues. EPO exerts regulatory effects in cardiac and skeletal muscles. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a lethal degenerative disorder of skeletal and cardiac muscle. In this study, we tested the possible therapeutic beneficial effect of recombinant EPO (rhEPO) in dystrophic muscles in mdx mice. Total strength was measured using a force transducer coupled to a computer. Gene expression for myostatin, transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was determined by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction. Myostatin expression was significantly decreased in quadriceps from mdx mice treated with rhEPO (rhEPO=0.60±0.11, control=1.07±0.11). On the other hand, rhEPO had no significant effect on the expression of TGF-β1 (rhEPO=0.95±0.14, control=1.05±0.16) and TNF-α (rhEPO=0.73±0.20, control=1.01±0.09). These results may help to clarify some of the direct actions of EPO on skeletal muscle.

Visando contribuir para o desenvolvimento de métodos alternativos de controle do bicho-mineiro-do-cafeeiro, Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), buscou-se selecionar plantas coletadas em diferentes épocas na região do Alto Rio Grande, (Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brasil) que contenham substâncias ativas contra este inseto. Folhas de cafeeiro com minas intactas de L. coffeella foram colocadas em contato com 106 extratos provenientes de 78 espécies vegetais e, após 48 horas, contaram-se as lagartas vivas e mortas. Os extratos de Achillea millefolium, Citrus limon, Glechoma hederacea, Malva sylvestris, Mangifera indica, Mentha spicata, Mirabilis jalapa, Musa sapientum, Ocimum basiculum, Petiveria alliaceae, Porophyllum ruderale, Psidium guajava, Rosmarinus officinalis, Roupala montana, Sambucus nigra e Tropaeolum majus, provocaram os maiores índices de mortalidade.

Aiming to contribute to the development of alternative control methods of the coffee leaf miner, Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville & Perrottet, 1842) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae), a search for plants able to produce active substances against this insect was carried out, with species collected during different periods of time in the Alto Rio Grande region, (Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil). Coffee leaves containing L. coffeella mines were joined with 106 extracts from 77 plant species and, after 48 hours, the dead and alive caterpillars were counted. The extracts from Achillea millefolium, Citrus limon, Glechoma hederacea, Malva sylvestris, Mangifera indica, Mentha spicata, Mirabilis jalapa, Musa sapientum, Ocimum basiculum, Petiveria alliaceae, Porophyllum ruderale, Psidium guajava, Rosmarinus officinalis, Roupala montana, Sambucus nigra and Tropaeolum majus showed the highest mortality rates.

The aim of this study was to know the best level of inclusion of palm kernel meal in the diet through ingestive behavior, and physiological parameters. Thirty two Santa Ines non castred male sheep, averaging 24,48±3,59 kg of initial body weight were studied. The animals were housed in individual pens, were distribuited in a completely randomized design with four treatments: (0, 6.5, 13.0, and 19.5%). The diets were composed of maize meal, soybean meal, palm kernel meal, mineral premix and Tifton hay as roughage, being provided twice daily, at 9:00 am and 4:00 pm at a ratio of 50:50 roughage concentrate proportion. The experimental period lasted 80 days (10 days for diet and environmental adaptation). The intake of solids and water and performance of animals was evaluated. The animals were weighed at the beginning and end of the experiment and the average daily gain was determined. The ingestion time (min/day) and efficiency of dry matter intake (g/h) showed a quadratic response; rumination time (min/day) and dry matter intake (g/day) showed a negative linear effect; rumination time and consumption of dry matter showed a linear effect and the intake of neutral detergent fiber and rumination efficiency of the fiber showed an increasing linear effect. Levels of palm kernel meal up to 19.5% in the diet did not affect time spent on leisure and total chewing, respiratory frequency, rectal temperature and superficial temperature. However, heart rate behavior decreased linearly with the addition of palm kernel cake in the diet. There was no effect of the addition of palm kernel meal on final weight and average daily gain. The inclusion of palm kernel meal up to 19.5% affects some parameters of ingestive behavior, but does not alter significantly the ingestive behavior. Was not observed any effect of palm kernel meal addition on the number of periods of eating, ruminating or leisure (p>0.05). The environmental variables during the experimental situation provided animal thermal discomfort.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho conhecer o melhor nível de inclusão da torta de dendê na dieta de cordeiros por intermédio do comportamento ingestivo, das respostas fisiológicas e bioclimatológicas. Foram utilizados 32 ovinos machos não castrados da raça Santa Inês com peso vivo inicial de 24,8±3,59 kg, alojados em baias individuais e distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos: (0;6,5;13,0 e 19,5% de torta de dendê) na dieta. As dietas foram compostas de farelo de milho, farelo de soja, torta de dendê, premix mineral e feno de tifton como volumoso, sendo fornecidas duas vezes ao dia, às 9 e 16 h, na proporção de 50:50. O período experimental foi de 80 dias, sendo 10 dias destinados á adaptação dos animais ás dietas e ao ambiente. Foi avaliado o consumo de sólidos e água e o desempenho dos animais. Os animais foram pesados no inicio e no final do experimento e foi determinado o ganho médio diário. O tempo de ingestão e a eficiência de ingestão de matéria seca seguiram comportamento quadrático, o tempo de ruminação e o consumo de matéria seca apresentaram efeito linear decrescente e o consumo de fibra em detergente neutro e eficiência de ruminação da fibra efeito linear crescente. Níveis de torta de dendê de até 19,5% na dieta não influenciam os tempos despendidos com ócio e mastigação total, freqüência respiratória, temperatura retal e temperatura superficial. Porém, a freqüência cardíaca nos dois turnos apresentou comportamento linear decrescente com adição da torta de dendê na dieta. Não houve efeito da adição da torta, peso final e ganho médio diário. A inclusão da torta de dendê em até 19,5% afeta alguns parâmetros de comportamento ingestivo, mas não altera de forma significativa o comportamento ingestivo. Não foi verificado efeito da adição da torta de dendê na dieta no numero de períodos de ingestão, ruminação e ócio (p>0,05). As variáveis ambientais durante o período experimental proporcionaram situação de desconforto térmico aos animais.

The association of education, tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, and interleukin-2 (IL-2 +114 and -384) and -6 (IL-6 -174) DNA polymorphisms with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) was investigated in a cohort study of 445 subjects. IL-2 and IL-6 genotypes were determined by real-time PCR. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) of disease-specific survival according to anatomical sites of the head and neck. Mean age was 56 years and most patients were males (87.6%). Subjects with 5 or more years of schooling had better survival in larynx cancer. Smoking had no effect on HNSCC survival, but alcohol consumption had a statistically significant effect on larynx cancer. IL-2 gene +114 G/T (HR = 0.52; 95%CI = 0.15-1.81) and T/T (HR = 0.22; 95%CI = 0.02-3.19) genotypes were associated with better survival in hypopharynx cancer. IL-2 +114 G/T was a predictor of poor survival in oral cavity/oropharynx cancer and larynx cancer (HR = 1.32; 95%CI = 0.61-2.85). IL-2 -384 G/T was associated with better survival in oral cavity/oropharynx cancer (HR = 0.80; 95%CI = 0.45-1.42) and hypopharynx cancer (HR = 0.68; 95%CI = 0.21-2.20), but an inverse relationship was observed for larynx cancer. IL-6 -174 G/C was associated with better survival in hypopharynx cancer (HR = 0.68; 95%CI = 0.26-1.78) and larynx cancer (HR = 0.93; 95%CI = 0.42-2.07), and C/C reduced mortality in larynx cancer. In general, our results are similar to previous reports on the value of education, smoking, alcohol consumption, and IL-2 and IL-6 genetic polymorphisms for the prognosis of HNSCC, but the risks due to these variables are small and estimates imprecise.

Foram realizadas avaliações eletrocardiográficas pré-operatórias em 474 cães, machos e fêmeas, com o objetivo de analisar a frequência de alterações eletrocardiográficas e sua relação com indicação cirúrgica, sexo, idade, raça, peso, escore corporal (obesidade), histórico e sinais físicos de doenças cardíacas. As alterações eletrocardiográficas foram observadas em 220 animais (46%), sendo mais frequentes nos machos (n=116; 52,7%). O aumento na duração do QRS foi a alteração mais observada (n=54; 24,5%). Sugere-se o exame eletrocardiográfico de rotina na avaliação pré-cirúrgica, independentemente de idade, peso, histórico ou sinais físicos de cardiopatia.

Pre-operative electrocardiographic evaluations were done in 474 male and female dogs to analyze the frequency of electrocardiographic alterations and its relation with the surgical indication according to age, breed, weight, body score (obesity), and history and physical signs of cardiac diseases. The electrocardiographic alterations occurred in 220 (46%) animals, being more frequent in males (n=116; 52.7%). The increase in QRS duration was the most observed alteration (n=54; 24.5%). The electrocardiographic alterations in the pre-operative are common, which suggests that the performing of electrocardiographic exam in the pre-operative is independent of the age, weight, surgical problem, or signs of cardiopathy on clinical exam.

A grande maioria do algodoeiro cultivado comercialmente no mundo possui fibra branca, porém atualmente existe crescente interesse em diversos países, inclusive no Brasil, pelo algodão de fibra colorida. O uso de fibras naturalmente coloridas reduz a poluição química, por dispensar o uso de corantes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o rendimento de fibras de cultivares de algodoeiro em resposta ao controle de plantas daninhas por meio da consorciação com a gliricídia (Gliricidia sepium). Os cultivares BRS-Verde (fibras esverdeadas), BRS-Rubi (fibras marrons avermelhadas), BRS-Safira (fibras amarronzadas) e BRS-187 8H (fibras brancas) foram submetidos aos seguintes tratamentos: sem capinas, duas capinas (aos 20 e 40 dias após o transplantio) e consorciação do algodoeiro com a gliricídia. Na consorciação, a gliricídia foi plantada entre as fileiras do algodoeiro, usando-se uma plântula por cova, em covas espaçadas por 0,50 m. Doze espécies de plantas daninhas ocorreram no experimento, a maioria delas pertencente à família Poaceae. As plantas daninhas ocorreram com diferentes frequências, distribuídas desuniformemente na área experimental. Os cultivares não influenciaram a matéria seca das plantas daninhas. A consorciação com a gliricídia reduziu a matéria seca das plantas daninhas, mas não evitou reduções nos rendimentos de algodão em fibra e em caroço, que foram maiores nas parcelas que receberam capinas. O cultivar BRS-Safira apresentou o maior rendimento de fibras, porém não houve diferenças entre cultivares quanto ao rendimento de algodão em caroço.

The majority of cotton grown commercially in the world has white lint, but recently, there has been a growing interest in colored lint cotton in several countries, including Brazil. The use of naturally-colored fiber reduces chemical pollution. The objective of this paper was to evaluate cotton cultivar fiber yield in response to weed control via intercropping with gliricídia. Cultivars BRS-Verde (greenish fibers), BRS-Rubi (reddish brown fibers), BRS-Safira (brown fibers), and BRS-187 8H (white fibers) were submitted to the following treatments: no hoeing, two hoeings (at 20 and 40 days after transplanting), and cotton intercropped with gliricídia. In the intercropped treatment, gliricídia was planted between rows of cotton plants, using one seedling pit-1, in pits spaced 50.0 cm apart. Twelve weed species predominated in the experiment, many of them belonging to the Poaceae family. Weeds occurred at different frequencies and in a non-uniform manner in the experimental area. Cultivars did not influence weed dry matter. Intercropping with gliricídia reduced weed dry matter but did not prevent reductions in cotton fiber and seed cotton yield, which were higher in hoed plots. Cultivar BRS Safira had the highest fiber yield, but no differences were observed between cultivars regarding to seed cotton yield.

We bacteriologically analyzed 156 species of Enterobacteriaceae, isolated from 138 patients with community-acquired diabetic foot ulcers, in a prospective study made at a diabetic center and at the Federal University of Ceará, Brazil, from March, 2000, to November, 2001.The samples were cultured using selective media, and identification, susceptibility tests and detection of plasmid-mediated-extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing strains were made with conventional and automated methods. The most frequently occurring pathogens were K. pneumoniae (21.2%), Morganella morganii (19.9%) and E. coli (15.4%). High resistance rates were noted for ampicillin, first generation cephalosporin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and chloramphenicol. ESBL-producing strains were detected in 6% of the patients. Resistance among gram-negative bacteria has become increasingly common, even in community-acquired infections.

Foram utilizados 11 cães de ambos os sexos, sem raça definida, clinicamente sadios, com média de peso de 12kg e idade entre dois e cinco anos, para avaliação de dois métodos de tratamento da ferida cutânea produzida pela transfixação óssea percutânea da tíbia íntegra. Em seis animais empregou-se haste de polipropileno com ponta de algodão embebida em álcool iodado a 0,2% para limpeza dos orifícios de penetração dos pinos. Em cinco cães usou-se soro fisiológico sob pressão pulsátil (± 30 psi). Em ambos os casos, os tratamentos eram repetidos a cada três a quatro dias, por um período de quatro semanas. Espécimes clínicos foram colhidos em anaerobiose após 3, 7, 14 e 28 dias da cirurgia, imediatamente antes dos tratamentos, semeados em meios de cultura específicos para isolamento de bactérias anaeróbias, aeróbias e leveduras. Os cães do grupo tratado com soro fisiológico apresentaram diminuta exsudação purulenta, enquanto que nos tratados com álcool iodado a ferida apresentou-se seca ou com diminuta exsudação de serosanguinolenta a serosa. A avaliação microbiológica revelou predomínio de Staphylococcus spp. Não houve diferença entre os tratamentosn quanto à avaliação microbiológica. Os resultados permitiram concluir que ambos os métodos foram eficientes no pós-operatório da transfixação percutânea.

Eleven dogs, of both sexes, average weight of 12kg, with ages ranging from two to five years were used with the objective of evaluating two treatments of skin wounds produced after percutaneous bone transfixation of the tibia. In six animals, cotton swabs embedded in 0.2% iodine-alcohol were used to clean the areas of pin perforations. In five dogs, a 0.9% sodium chloride solution, under approximate 30 psi pulse pressure, was used. In both cases, and treatments were carried out every three to four days, during four weeks. Clinical specimens were collected under anaerobic conditions, immediately before the treatments, and on days 3, 7, 14 and 28 after surgery. Samples were cultured in specific media in order to allow isolation of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and yeast. Dogs treated with sodium chloride solution showed little purulent exudation, while dogs treated with iodine-alcohol presented dry skin wounds with minimum blood-serous to serous exudation. The microbiological evaluation revealed predominance of Staphylococcus spp, but no differences were observed between the two treatments. The results allowed to conclude that both methods are efficient for post-surgical treatments of bone percutaneous transfixation in dogs.
