Lechuguilla ( Agave lechuguilla ) is one of the main non timber forest resources with highest socioeconomic value in the semiarid and dry zones of Northeastern Mexico. Harvesting of this species, represents one of the major economic activities to the people in these regions, since it provides support for near 31,000 harvesters and their families. The objective of this study was to determine the technical shift of lechuguilla ( Agave lechuguilla .) in natural populations from four provenances of the Northeast of Mexico: Jaumave, Paredon, La Sauceda and Marte, under different climatic conditions. The study was started in April 2005, when the buds ("cogollos") of lechuguilla were cut from all the plants selected in each location. Since then, the growth of buds was recorded monthly until the average height of each plant reached 25 cm, minimum size allowed for collection by the NOM-008-RECNAT-1996 Mexican Official Regulation. The experiment was established under a divided lots design in each location, and a significance level of p ≤ 0.001 was found. Jaumave location was the first to reach the technical shift 14 months after cutting of the head, with an average height of 25.54 cm. The plantas of La Sauceda reached the technical shift after 22 months, while the other provenances for Paredón extended to 25 months and Marte to 24 months.

La lechuguilla es uno de los recursos forestales no maderables con mayor valor socioeconómico de las zonas áridas y semiáridas del noreste del país. El aprovechamiento de esta especie representa una de las principales actividades para los pobladores de esas regiones debido a que su recolección proporciona el sustento de 31,000 pobladores y sus familias. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar el turno técnico de la lechuguilla en poblaciones naturales, de cuatro procedencias del noreste de México: Jaumave, en el ejido La Independencia del municipio Jaumave Tamps., Paredón y La Sauceda ambos del municipio Ramos Arizpe, Coah. y Marte, municipio General Cepeda, Coah. El trabajo se inició en abril de 2005 con el corte de los cogollos de la planta en cada una de las localidades; a partir de esa fecha se les hicieron mediciones mensuales de crecimiento, hasta que alcanzaron una altura de 25 cm, dimensión mínima para su aprovechamiento, según la Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-008-RECNAT-1996. El experimento se analizó mediante un diseño de parcelas divididas en cada localidad y se encontró significancia en los cuatro niveles a p ≤0.001. La localidad de Jaumave fue la primera en obtener el turno técnico a los 14 meses con una altura promedio del cogollo de 25.54 cm. La procedencia La Sauceda adquirió el turno técnico a los 22 meses; en contraste para el ejido Paredón, se extendió a los 25 meses y Marte a los 24 meses.

Estudos de família, gêmeos e de segregação têm demonstrado que fatores genéticos estão envolvidos na susceptibilidade para o desenvolvimento do transtorno obsessivo-compulsivo (TOC). Várias linhas de pesquisa sugerem que o sistema dopaminérgico possa estar envolvido na fisiopatologia do TOC. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar uma possível associação entre o polimorfismo localizado no intron 8 do gene do transportador da dopamina (SLC6A3) e o TOC em uma amostra brasileira composta por 208 pacientes e 865 controles sadios. Nenhuma diferença estatisticamente significante foi observada nas distribuições alélicas e genotípicas entre os grupos de pacientes e controles. Nenhuma associação também foi observada quando as amostras foram divididas de acordo com características fenotípicas específicas, tais como gênero, presença de co-morbidade com tiques e idade de início dos sintomas obsessivo-compulsivo (SOC). Nossos resultados sugerem que o VNTR do intron 8 investigado neste estudo não está relacionado com o TOC na nossa amostra brasileira.

Family, twin and segregation analysis have provided evidences that genetic factors are implicated in the susceptibility for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Several lines of research suggest that the dopaminergic system may be involved in the pathophysiology of OCD. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate a possible association between a polymorphism located in intron 8 of the dopamine transporter gene (SLC6A3) and OCD in a Brazilian sample composed by 208 patients and 865 healthy controls. No statistically differences were observed in allelic and genotype distributions between cases and controls. No association was also observed when the sample was divided according to specific phenotypic features such as gender, presence of tic disorders co-morbidity and age at onset of obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS). Our results suggest that the intron 8 VNTR of the SLC6A3 investigated in this study is not related to the susceptibility for OCD in our Brazilian sample.

Objective: The registry intends to establish the clinical characteristics, identify therapeutic approaches and describe in-hospital outcome of patients with acute coronary syndromes in Mexico. Methods and results: RENASICA II is a prospective registry that included 8,098 patients with final diagnosis of acute coronary syndromes. Three thousand five hundred and forty three patients had unstable angina or non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (UA/NSTEMI) and 4,555 ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). On admission typical chest pain was identified in 78% and 85% respectively. Non-ST elevation high risk group was identified in 36%. In STEMI group anterior myocardial infarction and Killip class I had higher occurrence. The use of aspirin, unfractionated heparin, low molecular weight heparin, nitrates, beta blockers and ACE inhibitors for patients with UA/NSTEMI were 90%, 50%, 45%, 58%, 50% and 54% respectively, with corresponding rates of 88%, 54%, 44%, 66%, 51% and 64% for STEM I patients. Coronary angiography, angioplasty and coronary bypass surgery were performed in 62%, 30% and 8% in UA/NSTEMI patients respectively with corresponding rates of 44%, 27% and 4% for STEMI group. Among patients with STEMI 37% were under fibrinolytic therapy and 15% received primary or facilitated angioplasty. Overall In-hospital mortality was 7%, 4% for UA/NSTEMI and 10% for STEMI. Conclusion: The largest registry on ACS in Latin-America provides important and reliable information on complete spectrum, outcome, quality of care, and identifies areas for further improvement of such quality. RENASICA II broadens our knowledge about how reperfusion and antithrombotic approaches modify the outcome and what needs to be improved in the real practice in Mexico.

Objetivo: El registro pretende establecer en México las características clínicas, identificar abordajes terapéuticos y conocer la evolución hospitalaria en pacientes con síndromes coronarios agudos. Métodos y resultados: RENASICA II es un registro prospectivo que incluye 8,098 pacientes con diagnóstico final de síndrome coronario agudo. Tres mil quinientos cuarenta y tres tuvieron angina inestable o infarto sin elevación del ST (AI/IMNEST) y 4,555 con infarto con elevación del ST (IMEST). A su ingreso al hospital se identificó dolor torácico típico de isquemia en 78% y 85% respectivamente. Se consideró de alto riesgo al 36% de los pacientes con AI/IMNEST. En la mayoría de los pacientes con IMEST la localización fue anterior y se encontraban en clase KK I. En AI/IMNEST se utilizó aspirina en el 90%, heparina no fraccionada 50%, heparina de bajo peso molecular 45%, nitratos 58%, bloqueadores beta 50% e inhibidores de enzima convertidora en el 54%. En IMEST estos medicamentos se utilizaron en el 88%, 54%, 44%, 66%, 51% y 64% respectivamente. En pacientes con AI/IMNEST se realizó angiografía en el 62%, angioplastía coronaria 30% y cirugía de revascularización 8%. En el grupo con IMEST estos procedimientos se realizaron en el 44%, 27% y 4% respectivamente. En IMEST el 37% recibió terapia fibrinolítica y 15% fueron llevados a angioplastía primaria o facilitada. La mortalidad hospitalaria global del 7%, en AI/IMNEST fue del 4% y en IMEST del 10%. Conclusión: El más grande registro de síndromes coronarios agudos en Latinoamérica provee información importante sobre el espectro clínico, evolución hospitalaria, calidad de atención e identifica áreas de oportunidad para mejorar la atención médica. El RENASICA II extiende nuestro conocimiento sobre cómo la reperfusión y el tratamiento antitrombótico modifican la evolución y cuáles procesos necesitamos mejorar en la práctica real en México.
