Abstract Introduction: We investigated the clinical course and outcomes of patients submitted to cardiovascular surgery in Brazil and who had developed symptoms/signs of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the perioperative period. Methods: A retrospective multicenter study including 104 patients who were allocated in three groups according to time of positive real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2): group 1, patients who underwent cardiac surgery > 10 days after positive RT-PCR; group 2, patients with a positive RT-PCR within 10 days before or after surgery; group 3, patients who presented positive RT-PCR > 10 days after surgery. The primary outcome was mortality and secondary outcomes were postoperative complications, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, and postoperative days of hospitalization. Results: The three groups were similar with respect to age, the European System of Cardiac Operative Risk Evaluation score, and comorbidities, except hypertension. Postoperative complications and death were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3 than in group 1, and no significant difference between groups 2 and 3 was seen. Group 2 showed a high prevalence of surgery performed as an urgent procedure. Although no significant differences were observed in ICU length of stay, total postoperative hospitalization time was significantly higher in group 3 than in groups 1 and 2. Conclusion: COVID-19 affecting the postoperative period of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery is associated with a higher rate of morbidity and mortality. Delaying procedures in RT-PCR-positive patients may help reduce risks of perioperative complications and death.

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal glands, gonads and brain. It is a precursor to sex hormones and also is known to have immune modulatory activity. However, little is known about the relationship between DHEA and neutrophils and thus our study evaluates the influence of DHEA in the effector functions of neutrophils. Human neutrophils were treated in vitro with DHEA and further infected with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The treatment of neutrophils with 0.01 μM of DHEA increased the phagocytosis of Salmonella independent of TLR4 as the treatment did not modulate the TLR4 expression. Additionally, DHEA caused a decrease in ROS (reactive oxygen species) production and did not influence the formation of the neutrophil extracellular trap (NET). Steroid treated neutrophils, infected or stimulated with LPS (lipopolysaccharide), showed reduced production of IL-8, compared to untreated cells. Also, the protein levels of p-NFκB were decreased in neutrophils treated with DHEA, and this reduction could explain the reduced levels of IL-8. These results led us to conclude that the steroid hormone DHEA has important modulatory functions in neutrophils.

ABSTRACT This paper reports the first study of the variation of the chemical composition and abundance of the essential oil of Croton heliotropiifolius, in four seasons, and the evaluation of its antibacterial activity. Essential oil obtained from leaves of C. heliotropiifolius were analyzed by GC/MS and evaluated against eight bacteria strains by broth microdilution method. The chemical constituents identified were the same in all samples, but with different proportions. The total percentages identified were 96.58% in summer, 92.08% in autumn, 98.44% in winter and 90.78% in spring. The majors constituents are β-caryophyllene, bicyclogermacrene, germacrene-D, limonene and 1,8-cineole. β-Caryophyllene was the major compound in all samples. The results of the antibacterial evaluations showed weak to moderate activity against the analyzed strains. In all analyzes was observed that essential oil sample collected in summer stands out from the others, displaying stronger activity against Gram-positive as Gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This study investigated the possible antinociceptive effect of p-cymene in different tests of orofacial nociception. The animals (mice) were pretreated (i.p.) with p-cymene (25, 50, 100 mg/kg), morphine (5 mg/kg), or vehicle (0.2% Tween 80+saline), and were then subsequently administered, subcutaneously into their upper lip: formalin, capsaicin, and glutamate. The nociceptive behavior response was characterized by the time in s that the mice remained rubbing the orofacial region, for a period of 40 min in the formalin test (first phase, 0-6 min; and second phase, 21-40 min), and for 42 and 15 min in the capsaicin and glutamate tests, respectively. To verify the possible opioid involvement in the antinociceptive effects, naloxone (i.p.) was administered into the mice 15 min prior to the pretreatment with p-cymene (100 mg/kg). Finally, whether or not the p-cymene evoked any change in motor performance in the Rota-rod test was evaluated. The results showed that the treatment with p-cymene, at all doses, reduced (p<0.001) the nociceptive behavior in all nociception tests. The antinociceptive effect of p-cymene was antagonized by naloxone (1.5 mg/kg). Additionally, mice treated with p-cymene did not show any change in motor performance. In conclusion, p-cymene attenuated orofacial nociception, suggesting an involvement of the opioid system in this effect. Thus, p-cymene might represent an important biomolecule for management and/or treatment of orofacial pain.

Mildew and rust diseases are among the main diseases of the vine crop in Brazil causing great losses in pre- and post-harvest conditions. Studies involving different aspects of induced resistance have been developed with the aim of promoting the reduction of pesticides use in the field. In this research, the effect of elicitors on the control of mildew and rust in vine cultivar Isabel was evaluated. Seven treatments were tested: Citric bioflavonoids (1.5 L ha-1), citric bioflavonoids + potassium phosphite (1.5 L ha-1 + 130 g 100 L-1), potassium phosphite (130 g 100 L-1), control treatment was sprayed with water (T), fungicide (metyran + pyraclostrobin) (2 kg ha-1), aluminum silicate (1%) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1.5 L ha-1), four replications and five plants per replication. The disease indexes were determined using progress curve of disease in grapevine according PIF (Integrated Fruits Production) for four periods (0 to 42 days post pruning - DAP, 43 to 77 DAP, 78 to 129 DAP and 0 to 129 DAP). The yield components and quality aspects were evaluated at 126 DAP. The use of S. cerevisiae and fungicide promoted the highest mildew control. However, the use of S. cerevisiae decreased the yield. No significant effects of the elicitors were observed on rust incidence.

The success of a parasitic relationship between fungal pathogens and their host plants depends on pre-infectional events. In this work scanning electron microscopy was used to study the events that occur between germination and penetration of the fungus Stenocarpella macrospora on maize (Zea mays) leaves. Plants of the hybrid Das-8492 were cultivated in greenhouse, and inoculated at the five-six leaves stage with 300 µl of a conidial suspension of 10(5) conidia/ml. Disk samples of leaf tissue were collected at different times after inoculation and prepared for analysis by scanning electron microscopy. It was verified that 86% of the conidia germinated between 12-15 h whereas apressoria formation occurred 18 h after inoculation. The presence of an extra cellular matrix also was observed during germination and penetration, suggesting that it may have a role in pathogenesis.

Induced resistance represents a promissing strategy in the integrated management of Verticillium wilt of cocoa (Theobroma cacao), because it makes it possible to exploit susceptible cultivars with good agronomical characteristics. Great advances in this area have occurred with the use of the S-methyl ester of benzo-(1,2,3)-thiadiazol-7-carbotioic acid (acibenzolar-S-methyl, ASM). However, the efficiency of this compound depends on the time of application and dosage used. The purpose of this study was to identify the best time of application and correct dosage of ASM in the pathosystem cocoa x Verticillium dahliae. The ASM was sprayed onto the leaves of cocoa seedlings cv Theobahia, at 20 g or 60 g of active ingredient (a. i.)/100 l of water, 15, seven or three days before pathogen inoculation. The disease index at 30, 45 and 60 days after pathogen inoculation was evalueted using the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), and the fresh weight and height of seedlings 60 days after inoculation. The time of application had a more important influence than dosage; 15 days before inoculation was found to be the best time for application of ASM. Decreases of up to 55.4% in the disease index, increases of 10.5% in fresh weight and 35.7% in plant height were observed at a dose of 20 g a. i./ 100 l of water, when compared to control seedlings inoculated with only the pathogen, thus evidencing the efficacy of ASM as a resistance inducer in cocoa seedlings susceptible to Verticillium wilt.
