SUMMARY Vaccines prevent millions of deaths each year, and their efficacy and safety have been widely established. In economic terms, vaccination is one of the most cost-effective health interventions, generating significant savings and long-term economic growth. Adult vaccination has been shown to decrease morbidity and mortality associated with preventable Infectious diseases, reducing complications and hospitalizations, including admissions to intensive care units. We have prepared this consensus document in order to design a pragmatic, accessible and standardized vaccination scheme for adults, according to risk category and age, based on the available evidence of available vaccines and new vaccines, having used the third consensus of the Paraguayan Infectious Diseases Society of 2019 as a basis for the final recommendations.

RESUMEN Las vacunas previenen millones de muertes cada año y su eficacia y seguridad han sido ampliamente establecidas. En términos económicos, la vacunación es una de las intervenciones sanitarias más costo efectivas, generando un importante ahorro y crecimiento económico que supone a largo plazo. Se ha demostrado que la vacunación de adultos disminuye la morbilidad y la mortalidad asociadas a enfermedades infecciosas prevenibles, reduciendo las complicaciones y las hospitalizaciones, incluidos los ingresos a las unidades de cuidados intensivos. Hemos elaborado este documento de consenso con el objeto de diseñar un esquema de vacunación pragmático, accesible y estandarizado del adulto, según categoría de riesgo y edad, sobre la base de la evidencia disponible de vacunas accesibles y nuevas vacunas habiendo utilizado el Tercer Consenso de la Sociedad Paraguaya de Infectología del 2019 como base para las recomendaciones finales.

Abstract The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 is variable, being associated with worse outcomes. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the incidence, risk factors (considering demographic characteristics, comorbidities, initial clinical presentation and associated complications) and impact of AKI in subjects hospitalized for COVID-19 in two third-level hospitals in Córdoba, Argentina. A retrospective cohort study was conducted. We included 448 adults who were consecutively hospitalized for CO VID-19 between March 3 and October 31, 2020 and were followed throughout the hospitalization. The incidence of AKI was 19% (n = 85; stage I = 43, stage II = 17, and stage III = 25, 18 required renal replacement therapy). In the multivariate analysis, the variables that were independently associated with AKI were: age (for every 10 years, adjusted odd ratio [95%CI] = 1.30 [1.04-1.63], p = 0.022), history of chronic kidney disease -CKD- (9.92 [4.52-21.77], p < 0.001), blood neutrophil count at admission -BNCA- (for every increase of 1000 BNCA, 1.09 [1.01-1.18], p = 0.037) and requirement for mechanical ventilation -MV- (6.69 [2.24-19.90], p = 0.001). AKI was associated with longer hospitalization, higher admission (63.5 vs. 29.7%; p < 0.001) and longer stay in the intensive care unit, a positive association with respiratory bacterial superinfection, sepsis, respiratory distress syndrome, MV requirement and mortality (mortality without AK I = 12.4% vs with AKI = 47.1%; stage I = 26%, stage II = 41% and stage III = 88%; p < 0.001). AKI was independently associated with higher mortality (3.32 [1.6-6.9], p = 0.001). In conclusion, the incidence of AKI in adults hospitalized for COVID-19 was 19% and had a clear impact on morbidity and mortality. The independent risk factors for AKI were: Age, CKD, BNCA and MV.

Resumen Los objetivos del estudio fueron evaluar la incidencia, los factores de riesgo (consi derando características demográficas, comorbilidades, presentación clínica inicial y complicaciones asociadas) y el impacto de la lesión renal aguda -LRA- en sujetos hospitalizados por COVID-19 en dos instituciones de alta complejidad de Córdoba, Argentina. Se realizó un estudio de cohorte retrospectivo. Se incluyeron 448 adul tos que fueron hospitalizados por COVID-19 entre el 3 de marzo y el 31 de octubre del 2020 con seguimiento durante toda la hospitalización. La incidencia de LRA fue 19% (estadio I = 43, estadio II = 17 y estadío III = 25, 18 requirieron diálisis). Las variables que se asociaron de manera independiente con el LRA fueron: edad (por cada 10 años, odd ratio ajustado [IC95%] = 1.30 [1.04-1.63], p = 0.022), enfermedad renal crónica -ERC- (9.92 [4.52-21.77], p < 0.001), recuento de neutrófilos sanguíneos al ingreso -NSI- (por cada incremento de 1000 NSI, 1.09 [1.01-1.18], p = 0.037) y asistencia respiratoria mecánica -ARM- (6.69 [2.24-19.90], p = 0.001). Los sujetos con LRA presentaron una internación más prolongada, mayor requerimiento (63.5 vs. 29.7%; p < 0.001) y estadía más prolongada en unidad de cuidados intensivos, una asociación positiva con sobreinfección respi ratoria bacteriana, sepsis, síndrome de distrés respiratorio, requerimiento de ARM y mortalidad (mortalidad sin LRA 12.4% vs. con LRA 47.1%; estadio I = 26%, estadio II = 41% y estadio III = 88%; p < 0.001). LRA se asoció de manera independiente a mayor mortalidad (3.3 [1.6-6.9], p = 0.001). En conclusión, la incidencia de LRA en adultos hospitalizados por COVID-19 fue del 19% y tuvo un claro impacto en la morbi-mortalidad. Los factores de riesgo independientes de LRA fueron: edad, ERC, NSI y ARM.

ABSTRACT The topography, morphology, ecotexture, echogenicity and architecture of the abdominal organs of four species of wild feline native to Peru were described through ultrasonography to generate ultrasound parameters in the smaller felines and obtain comparative measurements between these species. The felines were in a zoo in Lima, Peru: two ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), two oncillas (L. tigrinus), three margay (L. wiedii) and four Pampas cats (L. colocolo). An Esaote ultrasound equipment, model MyLab One Vet with convex transducer SC3123 was used. The characteristics of the abdominal organs of the studied species were similar in location, shape, echogenicity and ecotexture to those previously described in margay and domestic cats. The dimensions of the organs presented a variation according to the size of each species; being largest in the ocelot, followed by the margay, the Pampas cat, and finally the oncilla.

RESUMEN Se describió la topografía, morfología, ecotextura, ecogenicidad y arquitectura de los órganos abdominales de cuatro especies de felinos silvestres nativos del Perú mediante ultrasonografía para generar parámetros ecográficos en los felinos menores y obtener medidas comparativas entre estas especies. Los felinos se encontraban en un zoológico de Lima, Perú: dos ocelotes (Leopardus pardalis), dos oncillas (L. tigrinus), tres margay (L. wiedii) y cuatro gatos de pajonal (L. colocolo). Se utilizó un equipo de ultrasonido Esaote modelo MyLab One Vet con transductor convexo SC3123. Las características de los órganos abdominales de las especies estudiadas fueron similares en ubicación, forma, ecogenicidad y ecotextura a los descritas previamente en margay y felinos domésticos. Las dimensiones de los órganos presentaron una variación de acuerdo con el tamaño de cada especie; siendo mayores en el ocelote, seguido por el margay, el gato de pajonal, y finalmente la oncilla.

ABSTRACT. Anthracnose, which is caused by the fungus Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, is one of the most widespread and important diseases of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the world. The objective of the present study was to characterize the genetic resistance of the Beija Flor cultivar by inheritance and to conduct allelism tests. The inheritance test was conducted in the F2 population derived from the Beija Flor (resistant) x TU (susceptible) cross inoculated with race 2047 of C. lindemuthianum. Furthermore, allelism tests exhibited a fitted segregation ratio of 15R:1S, thereby indicating the independence of the Beija Flor gene from the following previously characterized genes: Co-1, Co-2, Co-4, Co-42, Co-6, Co-12, Co-14, Co-15, and Co-Pe. Based on the aforementioned results, we are proposing the symbol Co-Bf to designate the new anthracnose resistance gene in the Brazilian Andean common bean cultivar Beija Flor. This cultivar is an important source of resistance to C. lindemuthianum that should provide a valuable contribution to the common bean breeding program for anthracnose resistance.

Resumen Introducción: El liderazgo de los líderes de enfermería clínica es un tema de creciente importancia, ya que las enfermeras, como líderes, son la pieza fundamental para comunicarse con el equipo y lograr objetivos y resultados, como la calidad de la atención de enfermería, la seguridad de clientes e innovación en salud. Objetivos: Analizar la evidencia científica sobre la efectividad de las enfermeras en el desarrollo de habilidades asociadas con la práctica del líder clínico. Métodos: Revisión sistemática de la literatura con 3 pasos. 1) Una búsqueda inicial en CINHAL y MEDLINE. 2) Una búsqueda más amplia, usando las mismas palabras clave y términos de búsqueda, en las bases de datos restantes de la plataforma EBSCOHost. 3) Buscar las referencias bibliográficas de los artículos seleccionados. Los estudios seleccionados fueron del período entre 2010 y 2019. Resultados: Se seleccionaron doce artículos en diferentes contextos de la práctica clínica líder de enfermería. La mayoría de los hallazgos informados que relacionan la efectividad de los líderes clínicos de enfermería con mejoras claras en el rendimiento y, en consecuencia, una mejora en los resultados de la atención médica. Conclusiones: Las habilidades de la enfermera líder clínica son parte de una práctica avanzada, con mejores resultados que conducen a un aumento en la calidad de la atención de enfermería, la atención médica y un aumento en la seguridad del cliente.

Resumo Introdução: A liderança dos enfermeiros líderes clínicos é um tema em crescente importância, uma vez que os enfermeiros, enquanto líderes, são a peça fundamental para comunicar com a equipa e alcançarem objetivos e resultados, como a qualidade dos cuidados de enfermagem, a segurança dos clientes e a inovação em saúde. Objetivos: Analisar a evidência científica acerca da eficácia dos enfermeiros no desenvolvimento de competências associadas a prática de líder clínico. Métodos: Revisão sistemática da literatura com 3 etapas. 1) Uma pesquisa inicial na CINHAL e MEDLINE. 2) Uma pesquisa mais alargada, utilizando as mesmas palavras-chave e termos de pesquisa, nas restantes bases de dados da plataforma EBSCOHost. 3) Pesquisa nas referências bibliográficas dos artigos selecionados. Os estudos selecionados foram do período entre 2010 e 2019. Resultados: Selecionou-se doze artigos em diferentes contextos de prática do enfermeiro líder clínico. A maioria relatou dados que relacionam a eficácia dos enfermeiros líderes clínicos com claras melhorias do desempenho e consequentemente melhoria nos resultados dos cuidados em saúde. Conclusões: As competências do enfermeiro líder clínico inserem-se numa prática avançada, com melhores desempenhos que conduzem ao aumento da qualidade dos cuidados de enfermagem, dos cuidados de saúde e ao aumento da segurança do cliente.

Abstract Introduction: The leadership of clinical nurse leaders is a topic of increasing importance, since nurses, as leaders, are the fundamental piece to communicate with the team and achieve objectives and results, such as the quality of nursing care, the patient safety and health innovation. Objectives: To analyze the scientific evidence about the effectiveness of nurses in the development of skills associated with the practice of clinical leader. Methods: Systematic literature review with 3 steps. 1) An initial search at CINHAL and MEDLINE. 2) A broader search, using the same keywords and search terms, in the remaining databases of the EBSCO Host platform. 3) Search the bibliographic references of the selected articles. The selected studies were from the period between 2010 and 2019. Results: Twelve articles were selected in different contexts of clinical nurse leader practice. Most reported findings that relate the effectiveness of clinical nurse leaders with clear improvements in performance and, consequently, improvement in health care outcomes. Conclusions: The skills of the clinical nurse leader are part of an advanced practice, with better performances that lead to an increase in the quality of nursing care, health care and an increase in patient safety.

ABSTRACT Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare genetic condition characterized by slow and progressive gingival enlargement. The gingival overgrowth often delays teeth eruption and may cause serious functional and aesthetic problems. We reported a case of a 10-year-old female child presenting a generalized gingival enlargement covering almost all the maxillary and mandibular teeth and resulted in problems for swallowing, speaking, and poor aesthetics. An incisional biopsy was performed and revealed a hypocellular and hypovascular dense collagenous tissue covered by squamous epithelium exhibiting acanthosis and elongated rete ridges. The diagnosis was HGF. The treatment instituted was an association of gingivectomy with a rigorous program of oral hygiene and follow-up. Herein, we describe a rare non-syndromic case of generalized HGF, including clinical and microscopical features, as well as highlighting the importance of correct diagnosis of this genetic condition.

Abstract Background: Current South American populations trace their origins mainly to three continental ancestries, i.e. European, Amerindian and African. Individual variation in relative proportions of each of these ancestries may be confounded with socio-economic factors due to population stratification. Therefore, ancestry is a potential confounder variable that should be considered in epidemiologic studies and in public health plans. However, there are few studies that have assessed the ancestry of the current admixed Chilean population. This is partly due to the high cost of genome-scale technologies commonly used to estimate ancestry. In this study we have designed a small panel of SNPs to accurately assess ancestry in the largest sampling to date of the Chilean mestizo population (n = 3349) from eight cities. Our panel is also able to distinguish between the two main Amerindian components of Chileans: Aymara from the north and Mapuche from the south. Results: A panel of 150 ancestry-informative markers (AIMs) of SNP type was selected to maximize ancestry informativeness and genome coverage. Of these, 147 were successfully genotyped by KASPar assays in 2843 samples, with an average missing rate of 0.012, and a 0.95 concordance with microarray data. The ancestries estimated with the panel of AIMs had relative high correlations (0.88 for European, 0.91 for Amerindian, 0.70 for Aymara, and 0.68 for Mapuche components) with those obtained with AXIOM LAT1 array. The country's average ancestry was 0.53 ± 0.14 European, 0.04 ± 0.04 African, and 0.42 ± 0.14 Amerindian, disaggregated into 0.18 ± 0.15 Aymara and 0.25 ± 0.13 Mapuche. However, Mapuche ancestry was highest in the south (40.03%) and Aymara in the north (35.61%) as expected from the historical location of these ethnic groups. We make our results available through an online app and demonstrate how it can be used to adjust for ancestry when testing association between incidence of a disease and nongenetic risk factors. Conclusions: We have conducted the most extensive sampling, across many different cities, of current Chilean population. Ancestry varied significantly by latitude and human development. The panel of AIMs is available to the community for estimating ancestry at low cost in Chileans and other populations with similar ancestry.

Abstract Our objective was to determine the association between the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase polymorphisms (C677T and A1298C) and the risk of developing acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and multiple myelomas (MM) in Latinos. PubMed, SCOPUS, EBSCO, LILACS, and other Latin-specific databases were searched for case-control studies that investigated the association between these polymorphisms and hematologic malignancies until November 2017. Genotype distributions were extracted and either fixed-effects or random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled crude odds ratios (ORs) for the heterozygous, homozygous, dominant, recessive, and allelic genetic models. No publication bias was detected by the Begg-Mazumdar’s test and Egger’s test. From 290 publications, we identified 15 studies on the C677T polymorphism and 13 studies on the A1298C polymorphism. We observed a significant decrease in risk for the C677T polymorphism (OR range=0.54-0.75, p<0.01) and a significant increase in risk for the A1298C polymorphism (OR range=1.28-2.52, p<0.05) in developing ALL for all genetic models. No associations were determined for CML, AML, or MM for either polymorphism. This meta-analysis demonstrated that the A1298C polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of developing ALL, whereas the C677T polymorphism was associated with a decreased risk (protective factor) in the Latino population.

ABSTRACT: Oral melanoma (OM) is an extremely rare and aggressive malignancy. A 67-year-old patient presented with complains of a slightly symptomatic spot in the mouth since the past 2 years. Extraoral examination revealed left cervical lymphadenopathy, and intraoral examination a blue-black multinodular sessile mass, with irregular margins, involving the attached gingiva of teeth 27 and 28, extending to vestibular sulcus and hard palate, measuring approximately 3.5 cm. The lesion presented focal areas of ulceration. Panoramic radiograph did not show bone involvement. The main diagnostic hypothesis was oral melanoma. Microscopic findings of the incisional biopsy revealed a proliferation of densely pigmented pleomorphic cells, invading the subepithelial connective tissue in sheets or nests showing an organoid pattern. Immunopositivity for S-100, Melan-A and HMB-45 confirmed the diagnosis of melanoma. The patient was referred to an oncology hospital in which multiple metastases were detected, and the patient was subjected to palliative care. Herein we report an OM in advanced clinical stage, and discuss the clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical diagnostic criteria with emphasis on the importance of early diagnosis.

RESUMEN: El melanoma oral (MO) es una malignidad extremadamente rara y agresiva. Un paciente de 67 años acudió a consulta con la queja de una mancha intraoral ligeramente sintomática, presente desde hace dos años. Al examen clínico extraoral, se encontró adenopatía cervical del lado izquierdo, y al examen intraoral, se observó una masa sésil multinodular de color negro azulado, focalmente ulcerada, con bordes irregulares, afectando la encía de los dientes 27 y 28, extendiéndose hasta el surco vestibular y el paladar duro, midiendo aproximadamente 3,5 cm. La radiografía panorámica no mostró involucramiento óseo. La principal hipótesis diagnóstica fue MO. Los hallazgos microscópicos de la biopsia incisional revelaron una proliferación de células pleomórficas densamente pigmentadas, invadiendo difusamente el tejido conectivo en forma de sábanas o nidos con patrón organoide. La positividad inmunohistoquímica para S-100, Melan-A y HMB-45 confirmó el diagnóstico de melanoma. El paciente fue referido a un hospital oncológico, en el cual se le detectaron múltiples metástasis y fue sometido a cuidados paliativos. Este es el reporte de un caso de MO diagnosticado en estado avanzado, en el que se discuten los criterios clínicos, morfológicos e inmunohistoquímicos para su diagnóstico, haciendo énfasis en la importancia del diagnóstico temprano.

In this work, we tested a linear interpolation approach in order to select polarization functions (exponents) to be used with Gaussian basis sets. The Gaussian primitive functions were generated here for Ga to Kr and also for Sc to Cu. The general contraction method was used for the construction of contracted Gaussian basis sets of 6Z and 7Z quality. Polarization functions were added to the contracted bases by explicit optimization and also by interpolation of exponents. The performance of the contracted basis sets, augmented with polarization functions obtained by interpolation, was tested with molecular configurations interaction single and double excitations (CISD) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the systems Se, Se2, Se6, Ge2, CrH and FeH. The outcomes obtained in this work with interpolated polarization functions agreed very well with the ones augmented with polarization functions obtained by explicit optimization. The interpolation methodology presented here is useful to generate polarization functions for any Gaussian basis set in different series of atoms of the periodic table.

Resumo Este artigo situa-se dentro da psicanálise lacaniano e tem como objetivo discutir as contribuições teóricas sobre a figuração do objeto a nos sonhos de final de análise e a sua relação com o acordar. Se utilizam as ferramentas conceptuais próprias da disciplina para analisar quatro contribuições teóricas: a proposta de Colette Soler, quem considera a aparição do objeto a em alguns sonhos como o ponto de inserção da pulsão, que leva ao acordar; as contribuições de Ricardo Nepomiachi sobre a figuração onírica do esvaziamento ou dissolução do objeto a; a relação entre o objeto e o acordar sem angustia destacado por Frida Nemirovsky e Fabián Naparstek; e a noção de sonhos-índice, proposta por Marcelo Mazzuca, na qual o objeto insere-se numa trama onírica, segundo uma relação estabelecida entre desejo e satisfação em determinado momento da análise.

Abstract This article was devised within the framework of Lacanian psychoanalysis and aims to discuss the theoretical contributions of the depiction of ‘object a’ (objet petit a) in end-of-analysis dreams, as well as its relations with the awakening. Conceptual tools of the discipline were used to analyze four theoretical contributions: the proposal of Colette Soler of considering the appearance of object a in some dreams as the insertion point of the drive, which leads to the awakening; the developments of Ricardo Nepomiachi about the oneiric depiction of the object a’s emptying; the relationship between the object and the awakening without angst highlighted by Frida Nemirovsky and Fabián Naparstek; and the notion of index-dreams, postulated by Marcelo Mazzuca, where the object is inserted into an oneiric plot according to associations established between desire and satisfaction in a given moment of the analysis.

Resumen Este artículo se ubica en el marco del psicoanálisis lacaniano y su objetivo es la discusión de aportes teóricos sobre la plasmación del objeto a en los sueños de fin de análisis y su relación con el despertar. Se utilizan herramientas conceptuales de la disciplina para analizar cuatro contribuciones teóricas: la propuesta de Colette Soler de considerar la aparición del objeto a en algunos sueños como el punto de inserción de la pulsión, que conduce al despertar; los desarrollos de Ricardo Nepomiachi acerca de la plasmación onírica del vaciamiento del objeto a; la relación entre el objeto y el despertar sin angustia destacado por Frida Nemirovsky y Fabián Naparstek; y la noción de sueños-índice, postulada por Marcelo Mazzuca, en los cuales el objeto se inserta en una trama onírica, según una relación establecida entre deseo y satisfacción en determinado momento del análisis.

Résumé L’article se place dans le cadre de la psychanalyse lacanienne et son but est le débat de certaines contributions théoriques sur l’expression de l’objet a dans les rêves de fin d’analyse et sa relation avec le réveil. On utilise des instruments d’analyse propres de la discipline afin d’examiner quatre contributions théoriques : la proposition de Colette Soler de considérer l’apparition de l’objet a dans certains rêves comme le point d’insertion de la pulsion, ce qui conduit au réveil ; les développements de Ricardo Nepomiachi autour de l’expression onirique du videment de l’objet ; la relation entre l’objet et le réveil sans angoisse souligné par Frida Nemirovsky et Fabián Naparstek ; et la notion de rêves-indice, proposé par Marcelo Mazzuca, où l’objet s’insère dans une trame onirique, selon une relation établie entre désir et satisfaction dans un moment donné de la cure.

RESUMO: A ingestão das favas de Enterolobium contortisiliquum causa distúrbios digestivos, fotossensibilização hepatógena e abortos em ruminantes. Para caracterizar a intoxicação aguda, favas de E. contortisiliquum foram administradas a ovinos por meio de cânula ruminal. No Experimento 1, uma dose única de 12g/kg de peso corporal (pc) foi administrada a três ovinos. Um dos ovinos morreu e os outros dois se recuperaram após mostrar sinais clínicos. No experimento 2, 10g/kg/pc foram administradas diariamente a 15 ovinos, por três dias consecutivos ou até o parecimento dos sinais clínicos. Catorze ovinos mostraram sinais clínicos leves a acentuados após ingestão de 1-3 doses. Dois ovinos morreram e os outros se recuperaram. Observou-se nos ovinos dos experimentos 1 e 2, diarreia, anorexia, atonia ruminal, apatia, desidratação e taquipneia. Os principais achados macroscópicos incluíram conteúdo ruminal espumoso e alaranjado em meio ao qual se observavam fragmentos das favas de E. contortisiliquum, e conteúdo intestinal líquido. Histologicamente, havia degeneração balonosa e desprendimento do epitélio de revestimento dos pré-estomagos. A avaliação do conteúdo ruminal revelou acidose ruminal láctica aguda (ARLA). Análise bromatológica das favas de E. contortisiliquum revelou 537.8g/kg de matéria seca de carboidratos não fibrosos, quantidade suficiente para causar ARLA. Um ovino do Experimento 2 teve insuficiência hepática aguda, caracterizada por icterícia, elevação da atividade sérica das enzimas hepáticas e alterações histológicas observadas em biópsia hepática. Concluiu-se que a administração de favas de E. contortisiliquum na alimentação de ovinos, nas doses de 10g/kg pc ou maiores, pode causar ARLA. A ocorrência de insuficiência hepática num dos ovinos deste experimento sugere que a lesão hepática pode se desenvolver em ovinos que não apresentam ARLA.

ABSTRACT: Ingestion of Enterolobium contortisiliquum pods causes digestive disturbances, secondary hepatogenous photosensitization and abortions in ruminants. Pods were administered to sheep via a ruminal cannula to characterize acute poisoning. In Experiment 1, a single dose of 12g/kg of body weight (BW) was administered to three sheep in one experiment. One sheep died, and the other two recovered after presenting clinical signs. In Experiment 2, 10g/kg BW were administered daily to 15 sheep until the onset of clinical signs or for three consecutive days. Fourteen sheep showed mild to severe signs after the ingestion of 1-3 doses. Two sheep died, and the others recovered. Clinical signs in both experiments were diarrhea, anorexia, rumen atony, apathy, dehydration and tachypnea. The main macroscopic findings were an orange, frothy ruminal content witch contained pods fragments. The intestinal content was liquid. Detachment of the mucosa from the submucosa and ballooning degeneration of mucosal cells were observed histologically in the forestomachs. Evaluation of ruminal contents revealed acute lactic ruminal acidosis (ALRA). Bromatological analysis of E. contortisiliquum pods revealed 537.8g/kg DM (dry matter) of non-fibrous carbohydrates, which is sufficient to cause ALRA. Only one sheep in Experiment 2 had liver failure, characterized by jaundice, elevated serum activity of liver enzymes and histological lesions in liver biopsies. It is concluded that the administration of E. contortisiliquum pods in forage-fed sheep at doses of 10g/kg BW or higher may cause ALRA. The induction of liver failure in one sheep suggests that liver damage may occur in those sheep that do not develop acidosis.

Abstract. The disease known as “horse’s tooth” in maize (Claviceps gigantea) can affect grain yield up to 90 %. In this research, the time of sclerotial germination and the development of the sexual structures were studied in field and laboratory. A design was implemented with substrate and time of incubation at 4 °C as factors. Percent of germinated sclerotia, time of germination, and formation of stromatic heads were evaluated. In laboratory, sclerotia germinated only when on residual charcoal, incubated for 3 months at 4 °C followed by 2 months at 22.24 °C, resulting in 55 % germination. Sclerotia germinated produced an average of five heads per sclerotium 15 d after primordial were produced. In field conditions, the primordial appeared after the sclerotia were incubated for 3 months at 4 °C and 64 d at an average temperature of 14.07 °C. In both types of sclerotia, primordia released thin, elongated ascospores after 23 d, showing that the appearance of primordia and maturity did not occur at the same time. Ascospores release from the stromatic heads was documented. The pathogen was identified morphologically and molecularly as Claviceps gigantea.

Resúmen. La enfermedad “diente de caballo” del maíz (Claviceps gigantea) afecta hasta 90 % del grano. Se estudiaron condiciones para germinación de esclerocios, formación de estructuras sexuales y se describe parte del ciclo del hongo en laboratorio y campo. Se estableció un diseño con sustrato y tiempo de incubación a 4 °C. Se evaluaron porcentaje de esclerocios germinados, tiempo de germinación y formación de cabezuelas estromáticas. En laboratorio, los esclerocios germinaron solamente en carbón residual después de 3 meses a 4 °C y 2 meses a 22-24 °C de incubación resultando en 55 % de germinación. Esclerocios germinados producen en promedio cinco cabezuelas por esclerocio 15 d después de la aparición de los primordios. En campo, los primordios aparecieron cuando los esclerocios se incubaron 3 meses a 4 °C y 64 d a temperatura promedio de 14.07 °C. En campo y laboratorio, la liberación de ascosporas se observó 23 d después de aparecer de los primordios. La aparición de cabezuelas estromáticas, su desarrollo y maduración en el mismo esclerocio no fué sincronizado. Se documentó la liberación de ascosporas largas y delgadas emergiendo de cabezuelas estromáticas. El patógeno se identificó morfológica y molecularmente como Claviceps gigantea.

RESUMO A matéria orgânica do solo é uma importante fonte primária de nutrientes às plantas e influencia a infiltração, retenção de água, suscetibilidade à erosão e agregação do solo. No entanto, esse processo está condicionado à qualidade e quantidade da matéria orgânica aportada. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do desastre ambiental causado pela chuva em áreas de produção de oleráceas na região Serrana do Rio de Janeiro. Foram selecionadas as seguintes áreas: A1: sem impacto (testemunha); A2: soterramento total e cultivo de aveia + ervilhaca; A3: transbordamento do rio e cultivo de milheto + girassol; A4: transbordamento do rio e grande deposição de areia com cultivo de aveia-preta; A5: transbordamento do rio com grande deposição de areia e sem cultivo; e A6: transbordamento do rio em pequena escala e sem cultivo. As propriedades edáficas analisadas foram: textura; densidade do solo (Ds); densidade de partículas (Dp); diâmetro médio ponderado (DMP) e diâmetro médio geométrico (DMG) de agregados estáveis em água; pH(H2O), Al3+, Ca2++Mg2+, Na+, H+Al, K, P e carbono orgânico total (COT); e frações granulométricas e químicas da matéria orgânica. Os maiores valores de DMP e DMG foram observados nas áreas A3 e A6, que seguem a mesma tendência dos maiores teores de argila. Os teores de COT e suas frações químicas e físicas apresentaram diferenças em relação à testemunha com os menores valores verificados nas áreas que foram submetidas ao impacto pelo transbordamento do rio e grande deposição de areia. As áreas que foram impactadas pelo soterramento com predomínio da fração argila apresentaram valores semelhantes ou superiores aos da testemunha. As variáveis foram selecionadas e avaliadas por meio da análise de componentes principais, que evidenciou distinção entre as áreas estudadas, com separação entre elas associada à textura do solo e densidade de partículas.

ABSTRACT Soil organic matter is an important primary source of nutrients for plants and influences infiltration, water retention, susceptibility to erosion, and soil aggregation. However, this process is conditioned on the quality and quantity of organic matter supplied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the environmental disaster caused by rain in areas of horticulture production in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro. The following areas were selected: A1- no impact (control); A2 - totally covered by landslide and cultivation of oats + vetch; A3 - river overflow and cultivation of millet + sunflower; A4 - river overflow and extensive deposition of sand and growing of black oats; A5 - river overflow with extensive deposition of sand and no cultivation; and A6 – river overflow on a small scale and no cultivation. The soil properties analyzed were texture; bulk density (BD); particle density (Pd); mean weight diameter (MWD) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) of water-stable aggregates; pH(H2O), Al3+, Ca2++Mg2+, Na+, H+Al, K, P, and total organic carbon (TOC); and particle size and chemical organic matter fractions. The highest values of the DMG and DMP were observed in areas A6 and A3, which also have the highest clay contents. The TOC content and its chemical and physical fractions showed differences compared to the control, with the lowest values observed in areas that underwent the impact of river overflow and extensive sand deposition, since the areas that were affected by landslide with predominance of the clay fraction showed values similar or superior to reference values. Principal component analysis clearly showed a distinction among the areas studied, and this distinction is clearly associated with soil texture and particle density.

Through history, diagnosis and management of sex development disorders has been very difficult due to the significant impact on affected children, their families and care takers, representing a great challenge to healthcare professionals. Nowadays, there is significant debate regarding these children's care and outcome. This discussion is not only a medical issue, but it also includes legal and ethical matters. The Bioethics Committee of the "Hospital de Niños Ricardo Gutiérrez" has been considering this conflict and discussing its different aspects. Here we share our beliefs and opinions taking into account that they should not be considered the only and whole truth. There is an open debate in which all involved people should participate.

Los trastornos del desarrollo sexual, por sus dificultades diagnósticas, terapéuticas y el gran impacto sobre el paciente, su familia y aun para los integrantes del equipo tratante, han sido históricamente un desafío para todos los involucrados. En los últimos tiempos, se ha abierto un debate en relación con la conducta para tomar respecto del tratamiento y futuro de estos niños. Este debate excede el ámbito médico tradicional y se extiende al social y al jurídico. Por ello, luego de un análisis del tema, el Comité de Bioética del Hospital de Niños Ricardo Gutiérrez quiere acercar sus reflexiones, que de ninguna manera deben ser tomadas como la única verdad, por lo que queda abierto el debate para la participación de todos los intervinientes.
