Abstract Waste generated from agribusiness, such as swine production, can be used in agricultural soil; however, certain technical criteria should be followed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different depths of irrigation with swine wastewater (SW), associated with the soil management system, on soil chemical attributes after two corn crop cycles. The experiments were conducted in the field, in an arrangement with two soil management systems (conventional tillage system – CTS and no-tillage system – NTS) and five depths of irrigation with SW (50%, 75%, 100%, 125% and 150% of evapotranspiration from the crop – ETc). Soil samples were collected at depths of 0–0.1 and 0.1–0.2 m to determine the pH, Ca, Mg, K, Na, Al, P, Fe, Cu and Zn at the end of each crop cycle. Soil nutrient contents increased with the application of SW irrigation in the two crop cycles and in the depths of 0–0.1 and 0.1–0.2 m, mainly with an increase of irrigation depths. No effect of the management systems was observed for the majority of the nutrients evaluated. The content of the heavy metals Cu and Zn remained below the critical limits established by the Brazilian Regulations.

Resumo Os mamíferos são organismos carismáticos que desempenham um papel fundamental na função ecológica e nos serviços ecossistêmicos, como polinização, dispersão de sementes, ciclagem de nutrientes e controle de pragas. O Estado de São Paulo representa apenas 3% do território brasileiro, mas detém 33% da diversidade de mamíferos. A maior parte de seu território é dominado pela agricultura, pastagens e áreas urbanas que afetam diretamente a diversidade e a persistência dos mamíferos na paisagem. Além disso, São Paulo possui o maior porto da América Latina e o maior reservatório de petróleo costeiro do Brasil, com 600 km de extensão de litoral com diversas espécies de mamíferos marinhos. Essas infraestruturas afetam a diversidade, distribuição, ecologia e o futuro dos mamíferos no estado. Aqui, respondemos cinco perguntas principais: 1) Qual é a diversidade de mamíferos silvestres no Estado de São Paulo? 2) Onde eles ocorrem? 3) Qual é o seu impacto positivo e negativo no bem-estar humano? 4) Como os mamíferos persistem em paisagens modificadas pelo homem? 5) Qual é o futuro dos mamíferos no estado? O estado de São Paulo possui 255 espécies de mamíferos nativos, com quatro espécies endêmicas, duas delas globalmente ameaçadas de extinção. Pelo menos seis espécies (dois marsupiais, ariranha, veado-campeiro, veado-cambuta e tatu-canastra) foram extirpadas do estado devido à caça e perda de habitat. O intenso uso humano da terra no estado forçou muitas espécies de mamíferos a mudar sua dieta para lidar com a intensa fragmentação e agricultura. A monocultura em larga escala facilitou a invasão de espécies exóticas, como porcos selvagens (javaporco) e a lebre europeia. Várias espécies de áreas abertas estão expandindo suas áreas de distribuição (lobo-guará, veado-catingueiro) sobre áreas desmatadas e provavelmente refletem mudanças em direção a um clima mais seco. Como o estado possui o maior sistema rodoviário do Brasil, cerca de 40 mil mamíferos de 33 espécies são mortos por ano em colisões, causando um prejuízo econômico de 12 milhões de dólares/ano. A diversidade de mamíferos está concentrada nos maiores remanescentes florestais da Serra do Mar e no interior do Estado, principalmente nas regiões de Ribeirão Preto e Jundiaí. As lacunas amostrais estão concentradas em todo o interior do estado, principalmente na região noroeste. Os mamíferos silvestres desempenham um papel fundamental em muitos serviços ecossistêmicos, mas também podem ser uma preocupação em trazer novas doenças emergentes para as populações humanas. Embora a taxonomia de mamíferos pareça ser bem conhecida, mostramos que novas espécies estão sendo continuamente descobertas no estado. Portanto, pesquisas usando tecnologias tradicionais e novas (eDNA, iDNA, drones), monitoramento populacional de longo prazo, a investigação da interface do conflito homem-vida selvagem e a compreensão do papel único no ecossistema desempenhado pelos mamíferos são um caminho futuro para promover uma paisagem verde sustentável aliada ao bem-estar humano no estado. O plantio de corredores florestais ou de cerrado, principalmente junto aos principais sistemas fluviais, no planalto, o controle da caça ilegal nas áreas costeiras, o manejo dos regimes de fogo no Cerrado e a mitigação dos atropelamentos devem ser uma prioridade para proteger essa notável diversidade de mamíferos.

Abstract Mammals are charismatic organisms that play a fundamental role in ecological functions and ecosystem services, such as pollination, seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, and pest control. The state of São Paulo represents only 3% of the Brazilian territory but holds 33% of its mammalian diversity. Most of its territory is dominated by agriculture, pastures, and urban areas which directly affect the diversity and persistence of mammals in the landscape. In addition, São Paulo has the largest port in Latin America and the largest offshore oil reservoir in Brazil, with a 600 km stretch of coastline with several marine mammal species. These human-made infrastructures affect the diversity, distribution, ecology, and the future of mammals in the state. Here, we answer five main questions: 1) What is the diversity of wild mammals in São Paulo state? 2) Where are they? 3) What is their positive and negative impact on human well-being? 4) How do mammals thrive in human-modified landscapes? 5) What is the future of mammals in the state? The state of São Paulo holds 255 species of native mammals, with four endemic species, two of them globally endangered. At least six species (two marsupials, Giant otter, Pampas deer, Brazilian dwarf brocket deer, and Giant armadillo) were extirpated from the state due to hunting and habitat loss. The intense human land use in the state forced many mammalian species to change their diet to cope with the intense fragmentation and agriculture. Large-scale monoculture has facilitated the invasion of exotic species such as wild boars (javali) and the European hare. Several “savanna-dwelling” species are expanding their ranges (Maned wolf, Brocket deer) over deforested areas and probably reflect changes towards a drier climate. Because the state has the largest road system, about 40,000 mammals from 33 species are killed per year in collisions causing an economic loss of 12 million dollars/year. The diversity of mammals is concentrated in the largest forest remnants of Serra do Mar and in the interior of the State, mainly in the regions of Ribeirão Preto and Jundiaí. Sampling gaps are concentrated throughout the interior of the state, particularly in the northwest region. Wild mammals play a fundamental role in many ecosystem services, but they can also be a concern in bringing new emergent diseases to humans. Although the taxonomy of mammals seems to be well known, we show that new species are continuously being discovered in the state. Therefore, continuous surveys using traditional and new technologies (eDNA, iDNA, drones), long-term population monitoring, investigation of the interface of human-wildlife conflict, and understanding of the unique ecosystem role played by mammals are future avenues for promoting sustainable green landscapes allied to human well-being in the state. The planting of forest or savanna corridors, particularly along with major river systems, in the plateau, controlling illegal hunting in the coastal areas, managing fire regimes in the Cerrado, and mitigating roadkill must be prioritized to protect this outstanding mammal diversity.

RESUMO Para aumentar a eficiência no controle de plantas daninhas é comum o uso em dessecação da mistura dos herbicidas glifosato e 2,4-D. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar o efeito residual da aplicação desses dois herbicidas sobre o desenvolvimento de plantas de milho em solos de diferentes texturas. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, no ano de 2015, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, no esquema fatorial 2 x 2 x 7, sendo dois solos (Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo e Neossolo Quartzarênico), duas épocas de aplicação dos herbicidas (5 e 10 dias antes da semeadura do milho) e sete doses dos herbicidas (dose recomendada de glifosato; dose recomendada de 2,4-D; mistura das doses recomendadas de glifosato e 2,4-D; duas, dez e cinquenta vezes as doses recomendadas em mistura e uma testemunha), com quatro repetições. Após a emergência das plantas de milho foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros: fitotoxicidade, altura de plantas, clorofilas a e b, massa fresca e seca da parte aérea e massa seca da raiz. Em geral, ocorreu menor efeito residual no Latossolo Vermelho Amarelo em todas as doses dos herbicidas e no intervalo de 10 dias entre a aplicação e a semeadura.

ABSTRACT To increase the efficiency in the control of weeds, it is common the use of a mixture of the herbicides glyphosate and 2,4-D in the desiccation. This paper aimed to evaluate the residual effect of these two herbicides on the development of maize plants, in soils of different textures. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in 2015, in a completely randomized design in a 2 x 2 x 7 factorial scheme, corresponding to two soils (Red Yellow Latosol and Quartzarenic Neosol), two herbicide application times (5 and 10 days before maize sowing) and seven doses of herbicides (recommended dose of glyphosate, recommended dose of 2,4-D; mixing the recommended doses of glyphosate and 2,4-D; two, ten and fifty times the recommended doses in admixture; and one control), with 4 replicates. After emergence of maize plants, the following variables were evaluated: phytotoxicity, plant height, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, shoot fresh and dry matter and root dry matter. In general, there was lower residual effect on the Red Yellow Latosol at all the doses of the herbicides and in the interval of 10 days between the desiccation and sowing.

ABSTRACT Two species of Callithrix, C. jacchus (Linnaeus, 1758) and C. penicillata (É. Geoffroy, 1812), are considered invasive in Rio de Janeiro. This study determined the genetic and morphological diversity and verified the species involved in the hybridization of 10 individuals from the municipalities of Silva Jardim (N = 9) and Rio das Ostras (N = 1). We compared the external morphology and skull of C. jacchus (N = 15) and C. penicillata (N = 14) specimens deposited in the collection of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro (MN- UFRJ). Phylogenetic (maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference) and phylogeographical analyses (network analysis) were performed based on cytochrome b sequences. These analyses included hybrids from the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro (N = 3), C. penicillata (N = 2), C. jacchus (N = 2), C. geoffroyi (N = 2), C. kuhlii (N = 2), C. aurita (N = 1), and as outgroups, Mico emiliae (N = 1) and Saguinus mystax (N = 1). The pelage and skull characters of most hybrids were more closely related to C. jacchus. Skull morphometric analysis revealed an intermediate state for the hybrids. Phylogenetic analyses revealed a high similarity between the hybrids and C. penicillata. Six haplotypes of hybrids were identified. Network analysis including them and C. penicillata recovered the topology generated by phylogenetic analysis. The results corroborate that C. jacchus and C. penicillata participate in the hybridization process. There was no geographic structure between hybrids from the coastal lowlands and from the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro.

Resumo Os enquitreídeos são pequenos oligoquetas encontrados no mundo todo em solos com suficiente umidade e matéria orgânica, porém muito pouco estudados no hemisfério Sul. Este é o terceiro estudo sobre a abundância de enquitreídeos no Brasil utilizando o método de extração úmida e o primeiro realizado em Floresta Ombrófila Mista (região subtropical). A amostragem e extração foram baseadas no método padrão ISO 23611-3/2007, utilizando-se um trado desmontável adaptado e extração úmida com e sem aquecimento para acessar a abundância de enquitreídeo em um fragmento de floresta na Embrapa Florestas em Colombo, Paraná. As amostragens foram realizadas em três ocasiões entre setembro, 2011 e abril 2012. Os números médios estimados através de cada método variaram de 2.000-12.000 (frio) e 5.000-12.000 ind./ m2 (quente), respectivamente, e o máximo de 44.000 ind./ m2 em uma das amostras, o mais alto já relatado no Brasil. A extração quente foi a mais vantajosa, considerando a rapidez e preservação dos exemplares in vivo. As vantagens e desvantagens das extrações úmidas comparadas aos métodos de triagem manual e extração com formol foram discutidas. Os gêneros Guaranidrilus, Hemienchytraeus, Enchytraeus, Fridericia e Achaeta foram identificados nas amostras.

Abstract Enchytraeids are small oligochaetes found worldwide in soils with sufficient moisture and organic matter, but scarcely studied in the Southern hemisphere. This is the third study on enchytraeid abundance in Brazil using wet extraction and the first carried out in Araucaria Mixed Forest (subtropical region). The sampling and extraction were based on the standard method ISO 23611-3/2007 using an adapted split soil corer and wet extraction with and without heat to assess the abundance of enchytraeids in a forest fragment at Embrapa Forestry in Colombo, Paraná State. The samplings were performed in 3 occasions between September 2011 and April 2012. The average numbers estimated by each method varied from appr. 2.000-12.000 (cold) and 5.000-12.000 ind./ m2 (hot), respectively, with a maximum of 44.000 ind./ m2 in one of the samples, the highest value reported so far in Brazil. The hot extraction was more advantageous, given the speed and preservation of the specimens in vivo, allowing taxonomic identification. Advantages and disadvantages of wet extractions compared to handsorting and formol methods are also discussed. Guaranidrilus, Hemienchytraeus, Enchytraeus, Fridericia and Achaeta were the genera identified in the samples.

Um sistema de combustão iniciada por microondas foi acoplado a um espectrômetro de absorção atômica com atomização em tubo metálico aquecido com chama (FF) do tipo ar-acetileno para a determinação de cádmio em sangue. Amostras de sangue liofilizado foram preparadas como comprimidos, posicionadas em um suporte de quartzo e introduzidas em uma câmara de vidro empregada para a etapa de combustão. A câmara foi acoplada ao tubo metálico usando tubos de politetrafluoroetileno e de quartzo. A ignição foi iniciada por irradiação microondas usando solução de nitrato de amônio adicionada em papel previamente descontaminado. Oxigênio foi usado na etapa de combustão e para o transporte dos produtos gerados até o tubo aquecido. Grafite em pó de alta pureza foi misturada com as amostras antes do preparo dos comprimidos. O volume da solução de NH4NO3, a vazão de oxigênio, a estequiometria da chama, o tipo de suporte e a quantidade de massa de amostra foram avaliados. A calibração foi possível usando solução de referência adicionada a comprimidos de grafite de alta pureza, não sendo necessário o uso de material de referência certificado (CRM). Foi possível a combustão de até 56 µg de amostra, permitindo a obtenção de limite de quantificação de 0,018 µg g-1 e massa característica de 50 pg de Cd. Os valores dos brancos foram baixos (absorbância integrada menor que 0,01 s). Os resultados foram considerados satisfatórios com respeito à exatidão (concordância com valores de CRMs entre 95 e 99%) e à precisão (coeficiente de variação < 12%). Até 15 determinações podem ser feitas por hora incluindo a etapa de pesagem.

Microwave-induced combustion system was coupled to a metallic flame furnace (FF) atomic absorption spectrometer and applied for cadmium determination in blood. Lyophilized blood samples were prepared as pellets, positioned on a quartz holder and introduced into a glass chamber used for the combustion step. The glass chamber was coupled to the metallic flame furnace by using polytetrafluoroethylene and quartz tubes. Ignition was performed by microwave radiation using ammonium nitrate solution added to a small piece of previously cleaned paper. Oxygen was used to assist the sample combustion and also to transport combustion products up to the FF heated by an air/acetylene flame. High purity graphite powder was mixed with samples before pellets preparation. The volume of NH4NO3 solution, oxygen flow-rate, flame stoichiometry, sample holder type and the sample mass range were evaluated. Calibration step was feasible using adsorbed reference solution in pelletized high purity graphite avoiding the use of certified reference material (CRM). Sample masses up to 56 µg could be used allowing quantification limit of 0.018 µg g-1 and characteristic mass of 50 pg Cd. Low values for blanks were obtained (integrated absorbance lower than 0.01 s) and results were considered satisfactory regarding to both accuracy (agreement with results using CRMs between 95 to 99%), and precision (relative standard deviation < 12%). Up to 15 determinations can be performed per hour including the weighing step.

Os incidentalomas adrenais não são infreqüentes e podem ser encontrados em pacientes com hirsutismo. Nesse relato, apresentamos o caso de coexistência de um incidentaloma adrenal com hipertecose de ovário, em uma mulher com 54 anos de idade com amenorréia e hirsutismo de início abrupto e sinais leves de virilização. As testosteronas total e livre basal foram de 191 ng/dL e 179 pmol/L, respectivamente. O ultra-som pélvico demonstrou o ovário direito com 10,3 cc e ovário esquerdo com 9,8 cc, sem nódulos ou cistos e a tomografia computadorizada de abdome demonstrou adrenal direita adrenal e nódulo sólido de 0,8 cm na adrenal esquerda. Após a administração de análogo de GnRH, as testosteronas total e livre foram de 23 ng/dL e 17 pmol/L, respectivamente. Considerando a supressão da concentração de testosterona pelo análogo de GnRH, a paciente foi submetida a histeroooforectomia por via laparoscópica. O diagnóstico histológico foi de hipertecose, com focos de células estromais luteinizadas. Somente folículos atréticos foram visualizados. Não se detectou hiperplasia de células hilares. Em conclusão, a presença de massa adrenal em uma paciente com hirsutismo pode levar ao diagnóstico errado. Neste caso, o teste de supressão com análogo de GnRH foi fundamental para se determinar a origem da hiperandrogenemia.

Adrenal incidentaloma is not infrequent and can be found in hirsute women. We report a case of a 54-year-old woman with amenorrhea and hirsutism of abrupt onset and mild signs of virilization that had an adrenal incidentaloma coexisting with ovarian hyperthecosis. Basal total and free testosterone were 191 ng/dL and 179 pmol/L. Pelvic ultrasonography disclosed a right ovary with 10.3 cc and a left ovary with 9.8 cc without nodules or cysts, and computerized tomography of the abdomen disclosed a normal right adrenal gland. On the left adrenal gland a solid nodule with 0.8 cm was seen. After GnRHa administration, total testosterone was 23 ng/dL and free testosterone was 17 pmol/L. In view of a suppression of testosterone by GnRHa, the patient was submitted to a hystero-oophorectomy by laparoscopy. Symmetrically enlarged ovaries were seen. No tumor was apparent. Histology showed hyperthecosis, with foci of luteinized stromal cells. Only atretic follicles were detected. No hilar cell hyperplasia was seen. In conclusion, the presence of an adrenal mass in a hirsute woman can lead to a wrong diagnosis. In this case the suppression GnRHa test was fundamental to determine the origin of hyperandrogenemia.

O presente estudo objetivou avaliar, através da histoquímica com lectinas, as alterações na expressão dos carboidratos da superfície celular entre lesões benignas e malignas da pele usando análise de imagens computadorizadas. Fragmentos de pele foram obtidos através de biópsias e diagnosticados como carcinoma basocelular (CBC), carcinoma epidermóide (EpC), tricoepitelioma (TE), cerato acantoma (KA), ceratose seborreica (CS) e ceratose actínica (CA). As lectinas Con A, WGA, PNA, UEA-I e LTA foram usadas no estudo histoquímico. A análise de imagens foi realizada numa estação de análise usando o sistema OPTIMAS TM de análises. A PNA tem sido largamente utilizada no estudo de tumores, evidenciando a expressão de D-galactose nas neoplasias epidérmicas; esse açúcar apresenta alta expressão quando comparado com os outros reconhecidos pelas demais lectinas. Entre as neoplasias benignas, KA apresentou alta expressão glucose/manose; resíduos de alfa-fucose e D-galactose apresentaram intensa marcação com ConA (94,7%) LTA (84,2%) e PNA (89,4%), respectivamente. Os tumores malignos mostraram marcações distintas: EpC apresentou marcação significativa somente com a lectina PNA; CBC apresentou diferente padrão de marcação quando comparado ao observado nas lesões benignas assim como no TE. Os resultados qualitativos (análise de imagens) e quantitativos (histoquímica com lectinas) desse estudo evidenciaram que as lectinas têm grande potencial como marcadores de alterações bioquímicas nas neoplasias da pele.

The present study aims to evaluate, through lectin histochemistry, the alterations in the expression of cell surface carbohydrate between benign and malignant lesions of skin using computer image analysis. Skin fragments were obtained through biopsies and diagnosed as basal cell carcinoma (BCC), epidermoid carcinoma (EpC), trichoepithelioma (TE), keratoacanthoma (KA), seborrheic keratosis (SK) and actinic keratosis (AK). Lectins Con A, WGA, PNA, UEA-I and LTA were used in histochemistry study. Image analysis was carried out in a workstation using OPTIMAS TM software system. PNA strong binding pattern to studied tumours evidenced the high expression of D-galactose residues in the epidermal neoplasms when compared to other sugars recognized by the other lectins. Among benign neoplasms, KA presented a high expression of glucose/mannose, alpha-fucose and D-galactose residues evidenced by the intense staining of Con A (94.7%), LTA (84.2%) and PNA (89.4%), respectively. Malignant tumours showed distinct binding patterns. EpC presented significant binding only by PNA lectin. BCC was differentially stained in comparison to the staining pattern observed in benign lesions such as TE. Qualitative (lectin histochemistry) and quantitative (digital image analysis) data obtained in this study evidenced those lectins are potential markers to biochemical alterations in skin neoplasms.

Caracterizou-se o crescimento, a partição de matéria seca e a produção de pimentão, híbrido Elisa, em ambiente protegido. O experimento foi delineado em blocos casualizados com seis repetições e 16 tratamentos, de março a dezembro, durante 224 dias a partir do transplante (DAT). As mudas foram transplantadas em 27/04, no espaçamento de 1,0 x 0,6 m. Cada tratamento correspondeu a uma época de amostragem, realizada a cada 14 DAT. Em cada amostragem, foram avaliadas as características relacionadas ao crescimento da planta e a produção de frutos maduros. A massa seca na parte aérea atingiu o máximo de 368 g planta-1, aos 224 DAT. As produções de matéria seca do fruto, caule e folhas aumentaram ao longo do tempo atingindo os valores máximos de 189, 79 e 109 g planta-1 aos 224 DAT, respectivamente. Da mesma forma aconteceu com a área foliar por planta, altura da planta e a taxa de crescimento absoluto, cujos valores máximos foram 9056 cm², 91 cm e 4,11 g m-2 dia-1, respectivamente. Conclui-se que o crescimento da planta foi contínuo ao longo do ciclo sendo que os frutos acumularam a maior quantidade de matéria seca. A produção total de frutos maduros foi 51.960 kg ha-1 ou 232 kg ha-1 dia-1 de permanência da cultura no ambiente protegido. Os frutos comerciais corresponderam a 92,8% da produção total.

The nutrient uptake, the partitioning of dry matter and sweet pepper fruit yield were characterized under unheated greenhouse conditions. The experiment was carried out from March to December, and the randomized block design was used with 6 replicates and 16 treatments. Seedlings of Elisa cv. were transplanted to the field in 1 x 0.6 m spacing on April, 27th. Each treatment corresponded to a sampling time accomplished every 14 days from transplanting. At 224 days after transplanting (DAT) to the plastic house, the pepper plants presented 91 cm of height with a leaf area of 9056 cm² plant-1 and 189, 79 and 109 g plant-1 of fruit dry matter, stem and leaves, respectively, also presenting an absolute growth rate with maximum value of 4.11 g m-2 day-1. Plant growth was continuous along the plant cycle and fruits accumulated the highest amount of dry matter. Total ripened fruit yield was 51,960 kg ha-1 or 232 kg ha-1 day-1 of crop permanence in the greenhouse. Marketable fruits were represented by 92.8% of the total yield.

Foram identificados e quantificados, no período de verão-outono, evidenciando o componente crítico e o fator-chave de perdas da cultura, mediante a utilização da tabela de vida das culturas. O trabalho foi realizado na Horta de Pesquisa da UFV, de janeiro a junho de 2001, sob delineamento de blocos casualizados, com dois tratamentos (cultivar Santa Clara I 5300 e híbrido Débora Plus) e cinco repetições. Durante o ciclo da cultura, foram avaliados o número de plantas mortas e as causas de morte, o número de flores e frutos/planta. Nas colheitas, os frutos sadios foram contados, pesados e classificados, sendo identificadas as causas de perda dos frutos danificados. Observou-se maior influência da perda de plantas (r=0,89) (P<0,01) sobre as perdas totais sendo, consequentemente, plantas o componente crítico de perdas da cultura. O vírus TSWV foi o único causador de mortes dentro do componente crítico de produção, sendo considerado o fator-chave de perdas da cultura.

The components of loss in tomato production were identified and quantified, in the summer-autumn period. The critial component and the key factor in the cultivation loss become evident using the methodology of the crop life table. The experiment was conducted at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from January to June 2001 and consisted of two treatments (cultivars Santa Clara and F1 Débora Plus) in a randomized complete block design with 5 replications. During the tomato cycle, the number of dead plants, the causes of this and the number of flowers and fruits/plant were evaluated. At harvest, the healthy fruits were counted, weighted and classified; the causes of fruit damage were identified and the loss quantified. Total loss was more influenced by the fluctuation of the component plants (r=0,89) (P<0,01) than by other production components; consequently, plants were considered the critical production components of tomato. TSWV virus was the only factor affecting plant death, being considered the key-factor in the loss of this tomato production.

BRCA1 mutations are known to be responsible for the majority of hereditary breast and ovarian cancers in women with early onset and a family history of the disease. In this paper we present a mutational survey conducted in 47 Brazilian patients with breast/ovarian cancer, selected based on age at diagnosis, family history, tumor laterality, and presence of breast cancer in male patients. All 22 coding exons and intron-exon junctions were sequenced. Constitutional mutations were found in seven families, consisting of one insertion (insC5382) in exon 20 (four patients), one four base-pair deletion (3450-3453delCAAG) in exon 11 resulting in a premature stop codon (one patient), one transition (IVS17+2T> C) in intron 17 affecting a mRNA splicing site (one patient), and a C> T transition resulting in a stop-codon (Q1135X) in exon 11 (one patient). The identification of these mutations which are associated to hereditary breast and ovarian cancers will contribute to the characterization of the mutational spectrum of BRCA1 and to the improvement of genetic counseling for familial breast/ovarian cancer patients in Brazil.

A produção de frutos de tomateiro em resposta a doses de nitrogênio e à adubação orgânica foi avaliada em dois experimentos de campo conduzidos na primavera-verão e no outono-primavera, em 1999. Os experimentos foram instalados Universidade Federal de Viçosa, em solo da classe Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo Câmbico. Em ambos, as doses de N aplicadas, na forma de nitrocálcio, foram 0, 110, 220, 440 e 880 kg/ha e as doses de matéria orgânica, na forma de esterco bovino curtido, foram 0 e 8 t/ha. Os experimentos seguiram o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, no arranjo fatorial 5x2, com quatro repetições. A produtividade foi influenciada pelas doses de N, nos dois níveis de matéria orgânica, nas duas épocas. No experimento de primavera-verão, as máximas produções total, comercial e extra foram 44,78; 25,10 e 23,52 t/ha, obtidas com as doses de 530,2; 464,2 e 434,8 kg/ha de nitrogênio, respectivamente, sem adição de matéria orgânica; e 45,75; 25,87 e 24,53 t/ha, obtidas com as doses de 574,2; 513,3 e 599,8 kg/ha de nitrogênio, respectivamente, com adição de matéria orgânica. No experimento de outono-primavera, as produções foram 99,37; 78,87 e 69,93 t/ha, obtidas com as doses de 525,4; 533,9 e 557,5 kg/ha de nitrogênio, respectivamente, sem adição de matéria orgânica; e 108,74; 87,08 e 78,09 t/ha, obtidas com as doses de 589,6; 575,3 e 557,4 kg/ha de nitrogênio, respectivamente, com adição de matéria orgânica. A adição de matéria orgânica ao solo aumentou a dose do adubo nitrogenado necessária à obtenção das máximas produções total, comercial e extra de frutos de tomate, em ambas as épocas de plantio.

The tomato plants yield as a result of nitrogen doses and organic fertilization was evaluated in two field experiments carried out in spring-summer and autumn-spring, in 1999. The experiments were carried aut at the Federal University of Viçosa, in a Cambic Red-Yellow Argisol. In both, the N doses applied, in the nitrocalcium form, were 0, 110, 220, 440 and 880 kg/ha and the doses of organic matter, in the form of hardened bovine manure, were 0 and 8 t/ha. The experimental design was of randomized blocks, in the factorial scheme 5 x 2, with four replications. The productivity was influenced by N doses, in the two levels of organic matter, at two periods. In the spring-summer experiment, the maximum total, commercial and extra productions were 44.78; 25.10 and 23.52 t/ha, obtained with the doses of 530.2; 464.2 and 434.8 kg/ha of nitrogen, respectively, without organic matter; and 45.75; 25.87 and 24.53 t/ha, obtained with the doses of 574.2; 513.3 and 599.8 kg/ha of nitrogen, respectively, with organic matter. In the autumn-spring experiment, the productions were 99.37; 78.87 and 69.93 t/ha, obtained with the doses of 525.4; 533.9 and 557.5 kg/ha of nitrogen, respectively, without organic matter; and 108.74; 87.08 and 78.09 t/ha, obtained with the doses of 589.6; 575.3 and 557.4 kg/ha of nitrogen, respectively, with organic matter. The addition of organic matter in soil increased the nitrogen fertilizer dose necessary to obtain the tomato plant maximum production total, commercial and extra production, at both planting periods.

Os autores relatam o caso de uma paciente de 20 anos de idade, sem antecedentes patológicos, que apresentou quadro de abdome agudo obstrutivo. Realizou exames radiológicos, ultra-som e tomografia computadorizada, seguidos de laparotomia exploradora, sendo constatadas: a) rotação hepática completa para o hipocôndrio esquerdo; b) hipotensão severa por compressão da veia cava inferior; c) malformação congênita dos ligamentos falciforme e coronários; d) obstrução do cólon transverso por bridas constritivas congênitas; e) importante distensão gasosa de alças cólicas no hipocôndrio direito. Foram ressecadas as bandas pericólicas, com redução imediata da dilatação no hemiabdome direito, havendo retorno espontâneo do fígado à posição anatômica. Esta condição ímpar, e os outros três casos similares já descritos na literatura mundial, são comentados neste trabalho.

The authors report a case of a 20-year-old patient with the following clinical features: a) complete rotation of the liver into the left upper quadrant; b) severe hypotension secondary to inferior vena cava compression; c) congenital malformation of falciform and coronary ligaments; d) obstruction of the transverse colon due to congenital peritoneal fibrotic bands; e) massive colonic dilatation in the right upper quadrant. The patient was treated by resection of the pericolonic bands, and during the operation the liver returned to its anatomic position, in the right upper abdomen. This unique condition, and the three other similar cases reported in the world literature are discussed.
