Abstract Experimental trials were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of mulching with carnauba bagana, a by-product of wax extraction from Copernicia prunifera leaves, on the establishment of 32 shrub and tree species in the Caatinga region. The evaluations were made in areas degraded by mining and embankment of piçarra. Treated plants received 10 L of carnauba mulch in the crown of planted seedlings, while control plants received no mulch. After 24 months, mulching of carnauba improved the growth or survival of eight of the 32 species, while worsening that of two species. Specifically, mulching increased (p<0.05) the survival of Pseudobombax marginatum and Peltophorum dubium, and the height and canopy area of Anadenanthera colubrina, Bauhinia cheilantha, Copernicia prunifera, Hymenaea courbaril, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia and Senna spectabilis. The results demonstrate that the carnauba-based mulch can be directed to the species that responded positively, with the goal of improving establishment and growth in degraded areas of the region.

Abstract Invasive exotic grasses are among the biggest obstacles to the success of reforestation projects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the crowning with cardboard in suppressing the grasses Urochloa humidicola and Megathyrsus maximus aiming its use in reforestation areas. A field experiment was installed in a completely randomized design with two treatments consisted of crowning with cardboard and without crowning (control). The crowning with cardboard caused a progressive reduction of the biomass and was effective in causing senescence of both grasses in 80% or more of the crowning area between 20 and 50 days after the crowning (F test; p<0,05). These results demonstrate the effectiveness and potential of using the crowning with cardboard to control alien grass species in reforestation areas. This method brings as an innovation the possibility of placing cardboard directly on the grass after mowing, allowing greater simplicity and lower operating cost.

Resumo O trabalho objetivou acompanhar a colonização da comunidade da fauna edáfica, como indicador de qualidade de ambiente, após a revegetação de áreas alteradas pela atividade de mineração de bauxita, em Porto Trombetas, Pará. As amostragens foram realizadas nos anos 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 e 2008 em plantios de diferentes idades, e com diferentes arranjos de espécies, majoritariamente nativas do bioma, implantadas sobre subsolo com e sem adição de solo superficial. Os organismos da fauna edáfica foram capturados em armadilhas do tipo pitfall e triados no laboratório. Os parâmetros usados para avaliação foram a abundância, a riqueza, os índices de diversidade de Shannon e Equabilidade de Pielou e o padrão de colonização dos indivíduos da fauna do solo. De modo geral, em todos os plantios sobre o estéril, os grupos que apareceram em maior abundância foram Collembola, Formicidae e Coleoptera. A idade do plantio e a adição de solo superficial foram fatores determinantes na recomposição da comunidade edáfica, que se mostrou mais intensa nos plantios mais antigos. Nessas áreas, o desenvolvimento da vegetação levou à maior colonização e à melhor estruturação da comunidade de fauna edáfica, aumentando sua diversidade e o restabelecimento de processos ecológicos.

Abstract This research aims to observe the colonization process of edaphic fauna community after the revegetation of degraded areas by bauxite miningin Porto Trombetas, Pará state, Brazil. The soil fauna samples were collected in the years of 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2008, in different reforestation stages, and planted on subsoil with and without the addition of topsoil. The samplings were collected in pitfall traps and analyzed in laboratory. The evaluation parameters used were abundance, richness, the indexes of Shannon diversity and Pielou equability and the colonization pattern of individuals from the soil fauna. The planting age and the topsoil addition were determining factors in the restoration of the edaphic community, which was more intense in older plantings. In areas that went through older reforestation procedures, vegetation development has led to greater colonization and better structuring of the edaphic fauna community, increasing their diversity and restoring ecological processes.

RESUMO A exploração de petróleo em terra é uma das principais atividades econômicas da região semiárida (Caatinga) do estado do Rio Grande do Norte. Um dos impactos ambientais desta atividade constitui a exploração mineral da piçarra, tipo de cascalho utilizado no embasamento de instalações, como bases de poços, e na construção de estradas de acesso. Ao final da exploração, as jazidas de piçarra e demais áreas descomissionadas, onde a piçarra foi depositada, devem ser revegetadas com espécies nativas do bioma. O plantio de espécies leguminosas, capazes de realizar associações com rizóbios e fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA), tem se mostrado uma estratégia eficiente para revegetação de áreas degradadas. Entretanto, o impacto das atividades de exploração sobre as populações autóctones desses microrganismos é desconhecido. Esse estudo objetivou caracterizar a densidade de rizóbios e de esporos de FMA em quatro áreas impactadas pela exploração de petróleo no RN em relação ao presente em áreas adjacentes não impactadas. Amostras de piçarra foram coletadas nas estações seca e chuvosa em duas jazidas, uma base de poço e uma central de resíduos. Paralelamente, amostras de solo superficial (topsoil) foram coletadas em áreas adjacentes com vegetação nativa da Caatinga. Ensaios foram conduzidos visando obter o número mais provável (NMP) de rizóbios e a densidade e identificação de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA). Utilizou-se como plantas-isca de rizóbios Mimosa tenuiflora (Mart.) Benth. e Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. O NMP de rizóbios mostrou-se baixo em todas as áreas, sendo superior no período chuvoso. As maiores quantidade e diversidade de esporos de FMA foram obtidas no período seco. Dos microrganismos simbiontes estudados, os FMA apresentaram-se em baixas densidades nas áreas de exploração mineral em relação às de vegetação nativa, refletindo o impacto dessa atividade.

ABSTRACT On-shore oil exploration is one of the main economic activities in the semiarid region (Caatinga biome) of the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil. Gravel mining is an activity associated with oil exploration that causes environmental impacts. Gravel is a base-material for constructions, such as roads and pumpjack bases. The areas of gravel mining and other decommissioned areas where the gravel has been deposited must be revegetated with species native to the biome at end of the activity in the site. An efficient strategy for revegetation of degraded areas has been the planting of leguminous species that can associate with rhizobia and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). Nevertheless, the impact of mining activities on the autochthonous populations of these microorganisms is unknown. The objective of the present work is to characterize the density of rhizobia and AMF spores in four areas impacted by the oil exploration in RN when compared to non-impacted adjacent areas. Gravel samples were collected in dry and rainy seasons in two mining areas: one in a pumpjack base, and one in a waste disposal area. Surface soil (topsoil) samples were collected in adjacent areas with native Caatinga vegetation. Assays were carried out to evaluate the most probable number (MPN) of rhizobia and to identify the type and density of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), using rhizobia trap plants Mimosa tenuiflora (Mart.) Benth. and Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth. The MPN of rhizobia was low in all areas, but higher in the rainy season. The highest amount and diversity of AMF spores were found in the dry season. Among the symbiotic microorganisms studied, the AMF presented lower densities in the evaluated areas when compared to those in the adjcent native vegetation areas, denoting the impact of this activity.

ABSTRACT A promising use of biosolids is as organic fertilizer in agricultural and forestry activities. However, its composition might contain several pollutants, especially heavy metals, which may result in an increase in the concentrations of these elements in the soil and the risk of groundwater contamination. This study aimed to determine the leaching levels of ions in a Ferralsol (clayey texture) and in a Planosol (sandy texture). The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at Embrapa Agrobiologia, Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro state. Soils were packed in PVC columns and received 2 L/column of biosolids. The concentrations of heavy metals present in the biosolids composition were below the limits established by the legislation (CONAMA 375). In addition, the performed simulations showed the absence of contamination risk of soil or groundwater and surface water, according to the limits allowed by CONAMA 375. However, it should be emphasized the potential of nitrate leaching.

RESUMO O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a influência do relevo nas características químicas e físico-hídricas do solo e na regeneração natural, em áreas de pastagens abandonadas. Para o estudo foram consideradas oito áreas de relevo movimentado no município de Itaboraí-RJ, em cada uma das áreas foram selecionadas duas topossequências divididas em terços superior, médio e inferior, contemplando as pedoformas côncavas e convexas. Foram instaladas duas parcelas (20 m x10 m) em cada terço, uma para cada pedoforma, nas quais se avaliaram os atributos físico-hídricos e químicos do solo, a regeneração natural e a biomassa aérea da pastagem (biomassa estocada e taxa de rebrota). O terço superior apresentou os menores teores de argila e as características químicas não foram influenciadas pela posição na encosta. Na pedoforma côncava, nas áreas de textura argilosa, obtiveram-se menores valores de soma de bases trocáveis e de carbono, quando comparada à pedoforma convexa, de mesma classe textural. Essa tendência se repetiu, porém, de forma não significativa, nas áreas com textura média. As características físico-hídricas estiveram mais associadas à granulometria do solo que à posição na paisagem. A regeneração natural apresentou poucas espécies e não foram observadas diferenças tanto para a posição na encosta como para a pedoforma. No entanto, a espécie de Poaceae existente na pastagem de cada área foi um indicador mais sensível do potencial de desenvolvimento da regeneração natural do que as características edáficas, com destaque negativo para a paisagem dominada por Urochloa humidicola (Rendle) Morrone e Zuloaga, na qual se encontraram os menores valores de regeneração natural.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of the topographic conditions on soil chemical and physico-hydric characteristics and on the natural regeneration of abandoned pasture areas. We studied eight areas of hill lands in the municipality Itaboraí - Rio de Janeiro State. Two topossequences were selected in each one of the areas. These topossequences were divided into shoulder, backslope and footslope positions contemplating the main landform, concave and convex. Two experimental plots (20 x 10 m) were installed in each section of the toposequence, one for each landform, for the evaluation of soil chemical and physical-hydric characteristics, natural regeneration and pasture biomass (stocked biomass and regrowth rate). Our results show that soil texture was influenced by landscape position, in which the shoulder had lower clay content. The chemical characteristics were not influenced by topographic conditions. The physico-hydric characteristics were influenced by the particle size of the soil. The natural regeneration presented few species, and was not influencied by its position in the landscape and by the landform. However, the development of natural regeneration tended to be more limited in pasture dominated by Urochloa humidicola (Rendle) Morrone e Zuloaga.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of chemopreventive or water-repellent substances on the durability of cardboard disks used to crown forest tree species. The experiment presented a randomized block design with four repetitions and four sampling times (63, 133, 260 and 365 days) and was installed in Seropedica, RJ, in an area with Urochloa humidicola . Bamboo poles were used to simulate seedlings in the field and define the position of the experimental units. The treatments consisted of in natura cardboard, or treated with CuSO4 solution, pinus shellac, CuSO4 + pinus shellac, CuSO 4 + Sika®, pinus shellac + Sika®, and a second control with manual crowning. The cardboard crowning was effective at suppressing grass growth over all periods evaluated, independent of the treatment. After a year in the field, the cardboard disks treated with CuSO4 solution presented higher physical integrity with only 25% mass loss, against 60% mass loss in the control. The cardboard crowning also reduced soil temperature at the crown area by up to 15 °C in the 0 to 10 cm layer, in comparison with manual crowning. The results of this study indicate that the cardboard crowning method is efficient and has the potential to reduce the cost of weed control in reforestation.

RESUMO Atualmente, há poucas informações sobre a recuperação de áreas onde ocorre a extração de piçarra na Caatinga. Objetivou-se avaliar o emprego da fauna edáfica como bioindicadora da qualidade do solo em áreas com e sem a adição de topsoil (CT e ST, respectivamente), em plantios florestais para a recuperação de áreas de extração deste recurso mineral. Considerou-se a mata nativa de Caatinga (MT) como referencial. Foram instaladas 10 armadilhas em três réplicas para cada tratamento, em delineamento em blocos casualizados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, no final da estação chuvosa,em diferentes épocas (0, 1, 3 e 6 anos depois). Capturou-se um total de 45.740 organismos, distribuídos em 36 grupos taxonômicos, com o predomínio de Acari, Diptera, Entomobryomorpha, Formicidae, Poduromorpha e Symphypleona, em todos os tratamentos (ST, CT, MT). Nove grupos (25% do total) apresentaram ocorrência restrita. Os valores de riqueza e diversidade foram maiores na MT, seguidos do CT e ST. Não houve um padrão definido para a uniformidade e abundância total da comunidade. A maioria dos grupos apresentou inibição na abundância nos tratamentos testados em relação à MT, mas este efeito negativo foi relevante no ST, em comparação com o CT. A similaridade entre ST e CT foi elevada, e muito baixa com a MT. A complexidade ecológica da comunidade da fauna edáfica foi maior na MT. A fauna edáfica funcionou como bioindicadora da qualidade do solo, que foi maior em CT, na comparação com ST.

ABSTRACT Information on the recovering of areas of gravel extraction of the Caatinga biome are scarce. Thus, the objective of this work was to assess the soil fauna as bioindicator of soil quality, evaluating areas with addition of topsoil (WAT) and control areas (CWT) without the addition of topsoil used for forest plantations, which were implemented for recovering gravel extraction areas. A native forest of the Caatinga biome (NFC) was taken as a reference. Ten traps with three replicates were installed in each area, which were evaluated in a randomized block design in split-plot arrangement at the end of the rainy season of different years, 0, 1, 3 and 6 years after the experiment implementation. A total of 45,740 specimens were captured. These specimens were from 36 taxonomic groups. The Acari, Diptera, Entomobryomorpha, Formicidae, Poduromorpha and Symphypleona were the predominant groups in all areas (WAT, CWT and NFC). Nine groups (25% of the total) had restricted occurrence. The fauna richness and diversity were higher in the NFC, followed by the WAT and CWT. The uniformity and total abundance of the soil fauna community showed no defined patterns. The abundance of most groups was inhibited in the treatments evaluated, compared with NFC, however, this adverse effect was more significant in CWT compared with WAT. The CWT and WAT had high similarity and both had very low similarity with NFC. The ecological complexity of soil fauna community was higher in NFC. The soil fauna was efficient as a bioindicator of soil quality, which was higher in WAT, compared with CWT.

O uso agrícola do solo causa alterações em suas características físicas, químicas e microbiológicas. A conseqüência dessas alterações pode ser a perda da qualidade do solo, o que compromete a sustentabilidade do uso desse recurso. A análise de indicadores bioquímicos e microbiológicos de qualidade do solo é relevante para monitorar mudanças na qualidade do solo e no desempenho de suas funções-chave, como a capacidade de ciclar e armazenar nutrientes. Neste estudo, avaliaram-se indicadores químicos, físicos e microbiológicos do solo em plantios de eucalipto 5,5 anos após terem sido submetidos a diferentes métodos de manejo durante a fase de reforma do povoamento. A avaliação baseou-se na determinação de 18 atributos físicos e químicos, além de 12 outros de caráter bioquímico ou microbiológico, os quais foram adotados como indicadores da qualidade do solo. Os indicadores bioquímicos e microbiológicos mostraram-se mais sensíveis para avaliar mudanças qualitativas no solo devidas ao manejo, quando comparados com os químicos ou físicos. O maior distúrbio causado pelos tratamentos em que houve remoção ou queima do material orgânico da superfície do solo foi evidenciado pelos maiores valores de qCO2 e menores valores de qMIC na camada superior do solo (0 a 5 cm). A análise de componentes principais permitiu visualizar as semelhanças entre as áreas com base em todas as variáveis analisadas. A área de vegetação natural de mata secundária, usada como referência de qualidade do solo, foi a que apresentou a maior distância gráfica das demais áreas, demonstrando que a introdução da monocultura do eucalipto modifica a qualidade do solo estudado. A qualidade do solo da área de eucalipto onde não se efetuou o corte das árvores no primeiro ciclo (povoamento com 11 anos de idade) obteve a maior aproximação da área de vegetação natural, seguindo-se os solos sob eucalipto submetido a manejos que priorizaram a conservação dos resíduos orgânicos por ocasião da reforma do povoamento. Contrariamente, as áreas onde ocorreu a remoção ou a queima do material orgânico da superfície do solo foram as que mais se distanciaram da área de referência. Esses resultados demonstram que o sistema de manejo adotado na reforma dos povoamentos de eucalipto analisados influencia, em médio prazo, o potencial dos solos de estocar e ciclar nutrientes por meio da biomassa microbiana e das atividades bioquímicas ligadas a ela. A maior aproximação entre a área com vegetação nativa e a de eucalipto com 11 anos leva a supor que ciclos mais longos nas florestas de eucalipto, contrastando com o padrão atualmente em uso no Brasil (cerca de sete anos), pode ser relevante para se manter a sustentabilidade da atividade florestal em longo prazo, a despeito de uma menor produtividade média anual. Nesse caso, a opção pela produtividade de curto ou médio prazo, ou pela sustentabilidade do uso do solo, com a conseqüente manutenção da sua qualidade para as gerações futuras, poderá ser repensada a partir dos dados aqui apresentados.

Agricultural soil use induces changes in soil physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics. These changes can eventually lead to a loss of soil quality and a consequent reduction in plant growth and productivity. The analysis of biochemical and microbiological soil quality indicators is relevant to monitor changes in soil quality and in the performance of key soil functions, such as the capacity of nutrient cycling and storage. This study reports on physical, chemical, and biochemical/microbiological quality indicators of soil under eucalyptus plantation, evaluated 5.5 years after the site had undergone different management practices during stand replanting. Evaluations were based on the determination of 18 physical or chemical besides 12 biochemical or microbiological attributes that are considered soil quality indicators. The microbiological and biochemical attributes proved more adequate than the chemical or physical indicators to detect soil quality changes due to management. The greatest disturbance caused by the removal or burning of organic material on the soil surface was evidenced by the higher qCO2 and lower qMIC in the upper soil layer (0 to 5 cm). The principal component analysis underlying the graphical representation demonstrated that soil under secondary forest, taken as reference for soil quality, was very distant from that under eucalyptus, demonstrating that the introduction of eucalyptus monoculture causes significant changes in soil quality. The soil quality of a eucalyptus stand left unharvested after the first normal seven years cycle (11 year-old stand) was the closest to the area with native forest, followed by the soils under eucalyptus subjected to management systems that prioritized organic residue conservation during stand replanting. Contrarily, areas from which the organic material at the soil surface was removed or burned appeared very distant from the reference area. Our results show that the management system adopted during eucalyptus stand replanting influenced, in the medium term, the potential of soils to store and cycle nutrients via microbial biomass and associated biochemical activities. The fact that the 11 years old eucalyptus stand was closest to the reference area may suggest that the adoption of longer cycles for eucalyptus plantations, contrasting with the actual model of short rotation eucalyptus forests in Brazil (about seven years), is relevant to maintain soil sustainability for eucalyptus production in the long run, in spite of the lower mean annual productivity. In this case, the option for a higher productivity in the short and medium term, or for the sustainability of soil use, with the consequent maintenance of its quality for the future generations, should be reevaluated from the data presented here.

Distúrbios causados pelo homem têm resultado no aumento do risco de extinção de diversos táxons de orquídeas nativas da Mata Atlântica no Brasil. Na natureza, orquídeas utilizam obrigatoriamente fungos endomicorrízicos para a germinação de sementes e desenvolvimento da plântula, ao menos nos primeiros estádios do seu ciclo de vida. Assim, fungos micorrízicos associados ao sistema radicular de orquídeas nativas vêm sendo isolados, caracterizados e armazenados para uso em futuros programas de conservação de espécies de orquídeas, por meio da germinação simbiótica. Três isolados de fungos micorrízicos rizoctonióides foram obtidos do sistema radicular de três espécies de orquídeas neotropicais, Gomesa crispa, Campylocentrum organense e Bulbophyllum sp., de três diferentes fragmentos de Mata Atlântica no Brasil. Estudos taxonômicos, baseados na condição nuclear, morfologia da hifa vegetativa e ultra-estrutura do septo dolipórico, revelaram que os isolados pertencem aos gêneros Ceratorhiza e Rhizoctonia. Esse é o primeiro relato do isolamento de fungos micorrízicos associados ao sistema radicular dessas espécies de orquídeas neotropicais. Aspectos relativos à taxonomia e ao uso desses isolados no contexto de um programa de conservação de orquídeas nativas são discutidos.

Anthropogenic disturbances have resulted in an increased threat of extinction of many native orchid taxa in Brazil's Atlantic rain forest. In nature, orchids utilize mycorrhizal fungi to initiate seed germination and seedling development, at least in the early stages of their life cycle. Mycorrhizal fungi associated with the roots of orchids have thus been isolated, characterized and stored as important resources for a future conservation program of orchid species through symbiotic seed germination. Three mycorrhizal Rhizoctonia-like fungi were isolated from roots of three neotropical orchid species Gomesa crispa, Campylocentrum organense and Bulbophyllum sp. from three different Atlantic rain forest fragments in Brazil. Taxonomic studies based on the nuclear condition, vegetative hyphal morphology and septal pore ultrastructure revealed that the isolates belong to the genera Ceratorhiza and Rhizoctonia. This is the first report on the isolation of mycorrhizal fungal species associated to the referred neotropical orchid species. Aspects concerning their taxonomy and use in the context of a native orchid conservation programs are discussed.
