ABSTRACT. This study aimed to map the world's scientific production of bacterial and fungal microbiota in mollusks. The research was carried out in the Web of Science database, using “Fungi AND Mollusk” and “Bacteria AND Mollusk” descriptors and publication time between 2001 and 2021. Indexes were built by years, countries, research areas, and two maps of the co-occurrence of terms. There was a progressive increase in the production of microbiota in mollusks, with more research on bacteria during the investigated period. China and USA were the countries with the highest percentage of publications. Research with fungi and bacteria accounted for 28.41 and 17.66% in China, respectively. While the USA, the percentage was 21.05% for fungi and 16.02% for bacteria. Areas such as marine and freshwater biology (24.77%), fisheries (23.86%), biochemistry and molecular biology (18.60%), and pharmacy (17.83%) showed a higher percentage of indexed articles. There was also a high concentration of deposits of publications in the immunology area for both themes. The groups formed for bacteria and fungi indicated that studies had described the immune responses of mollusks, the genetic aspects associated with their defense mechanisms, pathogen virulence factors, and symbiotic and pathogenic microbiota, highlighting genera Vibrio, Aspergillus, and Escherichia coli pathogenic pathotypes. The bacterial and fungal microbiota in mollusks have been studied in several areas of knowledge and have given rise to research that can support the proper management of mollusks, application in the pharmaceutical industry, and implementation of measures in public health.

ABSTRACT The current study aimed to investigate the ectoparasitic diversity and gill alterations in Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (Characiformes: Erythrinidae) and Cichlasoma bimaculatum (Perciformes: Cichlidae) and evaluate the microbiological and physicochemical quality of water samples deriving from a Quilombola zone in Maranhão State, Brazil. Water samples and 42 fish specimens, 21 H. unitaeniatus and 21 C. bimaculatum, were collected from a floodable environment. Water samples were subjected to physicochemical and microbiological analyses in the laboratory environment. Fish specimens were euthanized to collect and identify ectoparasites in animals’ mucus, body surface, and gills, as well as to enable the histological analysis of the second right gill arch. The herein-identified ectoparasites have shown 30.95% prevalence and comprised three phyla: Platyhelminthes, Trematoda and Arthropoda. The herein-identified main histological changes comprised incomplete and complete fusion of several lamellae, lifting of respiratory epithelium, lamellar disorganization, lamellar epithelial hyperplasia, and blood sinus dilation. The herein calculated histological alteration index has shown that 23.80% of specimens presented mild-to-moderate tissue damage, 4.77% presented moderate-to-severe tissue changes, and 9.52% presented irreparable tissue damage. It was possible concluding that histological gill lesions identified in fish specimens analyzed may be adaptive responses to the affected environment and the incidence of ectoparasites.

RESUMO: Objetivou-se com o estudo detectar Cryptosporidium sp. em ostras de cultivo e estoque natural no estado do Maranhão e determinar o(s) tecido(s) eletivo(s) para pesquisa desse protozoário. Para a realização do estudo foram adquiridas 200 ostras de cultivo do município de Raposa e 100 de Paço do Lumiar, além de 100 ostras extraídas de estoque natural do município de Primeira Cruz, totalizando 400 ostras. Estas foram agrupadas em 80 pools constituídos por cinco animais. De cada pool, as brânquias e a massa visceral foram removidas totalizando 160 pools, sendo 80 para o grupo das brânquias e 80 para o grupo de massa visceral. Na sequência, procedeu-se à extração de DNA de cada pool com a utilização de kit comercial com modificações. Posteriormente, realizou-se a detecção do DNA do protozoário por meio da técnica de Nested-PCR. Com a técnica utilizada, foi detectado o DNA do protozoário pesquisado em 2,5% (n=2/80) pools apenas de brânquias, sendo 1,25% pools (n=1/80) oriundos de cultivo e os outros 1,25% (n=1/80) de estoque natural. Com os resultados obtidos nesse estudo, conclui-se que as ostras analisadas do gênero Crassostrea sp., oriundas de cultivo e estoque natural no estado do Maranhão, estavam contaminadas por Cryptosporidium sp. e podem se reverter em fontes potenciais para seres humanos e outros animais. Para a pesquisa de Cryptosporidium sp. em ostras, as brânquias são o tecido eletivo.

ABSTRACT: This study detected Cryptosporidium spp. in cultivated oysters and the natural oyster stock of the state of Maranhão and determine the elective tissue(s) to examine this protozoan. For this purpose, 200 cultivated oysters were purchased from the municipality of Raposa and another 100 from Paço do Lumiar. Additionally, 100 oysters were extracted from the natural stock of the municipality of Primeira Cruz, thus making up a total of 400 oysters. They were grouped into 80 pools consisting of 5 oysters each. From each pool, the gills and visceral mass were removed to obtain 160 pools, 80 pools for the gill group and another 80 for the visceral mass group. Then, DNA was extracted from each pool using a commercial kit with modifications. Subsequently, the protozoan DNA was detected using nested polymerase chain reaction. With this technique, the DNA of the protozoan under investigation was detected in 2.5% (n = 2/80) of the pools containing gills, with 1.25% of the pools (n = 1/80) belonging to the cultivation group of oysters and the other 1.25% (n = 1/80) to the natural stock. With the results obtained in this study, it was concluded that the analyzed oysters of the genus Crassostrea, from cultivation and natural stock groups, found in the state of Maranhão, were contaminated by Cryptosporidium spp. and may become potential sources of infection in humans and other animals. In addition, the gills are the elective tissue for the study of Cryptosporidium spp. in oysters.

ABSTRACT: Glanders is an infectious disease of equids caused by Burkholderia mallei, a facultative intracellular non-mobile Gram-negative bacterium that can be transmitted to other animals and humans. This study described glanders cases reported in the state of Maranhão, located within an Amazon-Cerrado transition region in northeastern Brazil, from 2007 to 2017. A database in an electronic spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel 2010) was developed containing information on the number of positive animals according to age, sex, purpose, year and month, municipality and mesoregion of origin of the animal. The descriptive analyzis was performed on data provided by the State Agency for Agricultural and Livestock Protection of the state of Maranhão (AGED), and by the official private laboratory. As the database did not have information data about negative animals, possible risk factors could not be evaluated. Among the total of 62,555 equids were evaluated by means of the complement fixation test (CFT), 59,036 were horses, 2,981 mules and 538 donkeys. Thirty-five samples (0.06%) reacted in the CFT. Five additional samples were by the western blot technique and three of them were positive. All the reactive horses (Equuscaballus) were from rural areas. Results presented here indicate that glanders may be endemic in the state of Maranhão and is a public health concern.

RESUMO: O mormo é uma doença infecciosa de equídeos causada por Burkholderia mallei, uma bactéria Gram-negativa intracelular, não móvel e facultativa que pode ser transmitida a outros animais e humanos. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os casos de mormo relatados no estado do Maranhão, em uma região de transição Amazônia-Cerrado do Nordeste do Brasil, no período de 2007 a 2017. Um banco de dados em uma planilha eletrônica (Microsoft Excel 2010) foi desenvolvido contendo informações sobre o número de animais positivos de acordo com a idade, sexo, finalidade, ano, mês, municípios e mesorregiões de origem do animal. A análise descritiva foi realizada sobre os dados fornecidos pela Agência Estadual de Defesa Agropecuária do Estado do Maranhão (AGED), e pelo laboratório privado oficial. Como o banco de dados não possui informações sobre animais negativos, possíveis fatores de risco não puderam ser avaliados. Entre o total de 62.555 equídeos foram avaliados com o teste de fixação do complemento (CFT), 59.036 eram cavalos, 2.981 mulas e 538 jumentos. Trinta e cinco (0,06%) amostras reagiram ao CFT. Cinco amostras adicionais foram testadas pela técnica de western blot e três foram positivas. Todos os animais positivos foram cavalos (Equus caballus) da área rural. Os resultados indicam que o mormo pode ser endêmico no estado do Maranhão e uma preocupação de saúde pública.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar a diversidade de endoparasitos e alterações hepáticas em Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (jeju) e Cichlasoma bimaculatum (acará preto) de área quilombola maranhense, Brasil. Assim, 21 H. unitaeniatus e 21 C. bimaculatum foram capturados de ambiente alagável e transportados vivos ao laboratório. Após a eutanásia, procedeu-se à coleta, identificação de endoparasitos e avaliação de alterações hepáticas por meio de análise histológica, baseada na severidade das lesões: (i) alterações de estágio I, não comprometem o funcionamento dos órgãos; (ii) estágio II, lesões mais severas que prejudicam o funcionamento normal dos órgãos; (iii) estágio III, lesões muito severas e irreversíveis. Dos peixes avaliados, 71,43% H. unitaeniatus e 61,90% C. bimaculatum estavam parasitados. Contracaecum sp. foi encontrado nas duas espécies e acantocéfalos apenas em H. unitaeniatus. As alterações hepáticas foram vacuolização, núcleo na periferia das células, deformação do contorno celular, centro de melanomacrófagos, hiperemia, degeneração citoplasmática e vacuolização nuclear. Com o cálculo do índice das alterações, constatou-se que 26,19% dos exemplares apresentaram alterações de estágio I; 38,09% de estágio II e 9,52% de estágio III com a constatação de larvas de Contracaecum sp. encistadas no fígado. Conclui-se que existe alta prevalência de Contracaecum sp., e lesões hepáticas podem ser respostas adaptativas dos peixes à infecção endoparasitária.

Abstract Our aim was to assess endoparasite diversity and liver alterations in Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (jeju) and Cichlasoma bimaculatum (acará preto) in a quilombola area in Maranhão, Brazil. For this, 21 H. unitaeniatus and 21 C. bimaculatum were caught in a natural environment and transported to a laboratory. After these had been euthanized, endoparasites were collected and identified. Liver alterations were evaluated histological analysis based on the severity of each lesion: stage I, organ functioning not compromised; stage II, more severe lesions that impair normal functioning of the organs; and stage III, very severe and irreversible lesions. Among the fish evaluated, 71.43% H. unitaeniatus and 61.90% C. bimaculatum were parasitized. Contracaecum sp. was found in both species; while acanthocephalans, only in H. unitaeniatus. The alterations were vacuolization, nucleus in the cell periphery, deformation of the cell outline, melanomacrophage center, hyperemia, cytoplasmic degeneration and nuclear vacuolization. Through calculating a histological alteration index, it was found that 26.19% of the specimens presented lesions in stage I; 38.09% lesions in stage II and 9.52% lesions in stage III. It was concluded that there is high prevalence of Contracaecum sp. and that the liver lesions may be adaptive responses by the fish to endoparasitic infection.

Resumo: Objetivou-se com este estudo relatar a detecção do DNA de Toxoplasma gondii em ostras (Crassostrea sp.) no estado do Maranhão. Para a realização do estudo foram adquiridas 200 ostras de cultivo do município de Raposa, e 100 de Paço do Lumiar, além de 100 ostras extraídas de estoque natural do município de Primeira Cruz. Do total de 400 exemplares amostrados, formaram-se 80 pools em que cada pool foi constituído por cinco animais. De cada ostra foi procedida à retirada das brânquias e massa visceral, seguido da extração de DNA de cada pool de ostras, com a utilização de kit comercial. Posteriormente, realizou-se a pesquisa do protozoário por meio da técnica de nested PCR (primer SAG-1). Com a técnica molecular utilizada, foi diagnosticado o DNA do protozoário pesquisado em 2,5% (n=2/80) pools de ostras oriundas exclusivamente de cultivo. Com os resultados obtidos neste estudo, conclui-se que ostras do gênero Crassostrea sp., cultivadas no estado do Maranhão, são capazes de filtrar e manter nos seus tecidos oocistos de T. gondii, sendo, portanto, fontes potenciais de contaminação para seres humanos e outros animais.

Abstract The aim of this study was to report on detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in oysters (Crassostrea sp.) in the state of Maranhão. To conduct this study, 200 farmed oysters were acquired in the municipality of Raposa and 100 in Paço do Lumiar; and a further 100 oysters were taken from the natural stock in the municipality of Primeira Cruz. This total of 400 specimens sampled was divided into 80 pools composed of five animals each. The gills and visceral mass of each oyster were removed for DNA extraction (per pool of oysters), using a commercial kit. The nested PCR technique (with the primer SAG-1) was then used to investigate any presence of protozoa. This molecular technique demonstrated the presence of DNA of T. gondii in 2.5% of the pools of oysters (n = 2/80): these oysters were exclusively from farms. The results from this study allow the conclusion that oysters of the genus Crassostrea that are farmed in the state of Maranhão are capable of filtering oocysts of T. gondii and maintaining them in their tissues. They are therefore potential sources of contamination for humans and other animals.

RESUMO: Os objetivos do estudo foram determinar a prevalência da brucelose bovina, relacionar resultados laboratoriais de amostras séricas reagentes com a sorologia de animais que apresentavam bursites e, ainda, identificar possíveis fatores de risco para a enfermidade. Para isso, no abate foram coletadas 1.265 amostras de sangue bovino, entre machos e fêmeas, procedentes de diferentes municípios maranhenses e de outras regiões do Brasil, abatidos em dois frigoríficos com Serviço de Inspeção Federal e dois com Serviço de Inspeção Municipal, nas regionais de Açailândia e Imperatriz. As amostras foram testadas para a presença de anticorpos específicos pelos testes do antígeno acidificado tamponado e 2-mercaptoetanol combinado à soroaglutinação lenta (2-ME + SAL). Para realizar o estudo dos fatores de risco, adicionalmente aplicou-se um questionário epidemiológico com 100 proprietários que forneceram animais aos frigoríficos. Foram também coletadas 15 amostras de material de bursite de animais que apresentaram a referida lesão no momento do abate. Do total de amostras analisadas, 39 foram reagentes ao antígeno acidificado tamponado e 15 foram confirmadas no 2-ME + SAL. Apenas um macho foi reagente, o que resultou em prevalência de 1,19%. Das 15 amostras de material de bursites coletadas, uma foi reagente no teste 2-ME + SAL. Os fatores de risco identificados no estudo foram: ocorrência de abortamentos, venda de animais sem exames e não realização de exames que atestem os animais antes da inclusão nos rebanhos para abate. Concluiu-se que a infecção por Brucella abortus em animais abatidos nos frigoríficos avaliados está presente e ocorre com maior frequência em fêmeas.

ABSTRACT: The aims of the current study were to investigate the prevalence of bovine brucellosis, to correlate laboratory results of serum reactive samples to the serology of animals presenting serous pouches, and to identify possible risk factors for the development of the disease. In order to do so, 1,265 bovine blood samples were collected from male and female animals bred in different counties in Maranhão state, Brazil, and in other regions of the country. The animals were slaughtered in two slaughterhouses controlled by the Federal Inspection Service (FIS), and in two others controlled by the Municipal Inspection Service (MIS), of regions such as Açailândia and Imperatriz. Samples were tested for specific antibodies by using buffered acidified antigen (BAA) and 2-mercaptoethanol in combination with slow serum agglutination (2-ME + SSA). Additionally, an epidemiological questionnaire was applied to 100 owners, who provided animals to the slaughterhouses, to enable investigating the risk factors for bovine brucellosis. Fifteen serous pouches of animals presenting this lesion were also collected at slaughter time. Thirty-nine out of the analyzed samples were reacted to BAA, whereas 15 reacted to the 2-ME + SSA test; only one male was reagent and it resulted in 1.19% prevalence. One out of the 15 collected serous pouches reacted to the 2-ME + SSA test. The risk factors identified in this study were: the incidence of miscarriages, the sale of animals without previous examination, and the failure in testing the animals before introducing them in herds and before slaughter. It was possible to conclude that the animals slaughtered in the herein evaluated slaughterhouses were infected with Brucella abortus, as well as that this infection prevailed in females.

RESUMO: Objetivando conhecer a situação da tuberculose ovina no Maranhão, avaliaram-se 343 ovinos da região sudoeste do estado, 247 fêmeas e 96 machos, com idade acima de 6 meses, por meio do teste cervical comparativo (TCC), com inoculação de tuberculinas na região cervical direita. Cranialmente, injetou-se derivado proteico purificado (PPD) aviário; e caudalmente, PPD bovino, em doses individuais de 0,1 mL. Todos os animais apresentaram resultado negativo para tuberculose, entretanto, 65 ovinos apresentaram reação à tuberculina bovina superior à aviária. Para investigar a possibilidade de baixa sensibilização ou anergia em animais com tuberculose avançada, foi necropsiado um ovino caquético, idade acima de quatro anos, com resultado negativo ao TCC, porém, com reação à tuberculina aviária e linfonodos aumentados com consistência endurecida. Os resultados indicaram infecções por C. pseudotuberculosis, Actinomyces pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus e Mycobacterium sp. A cultura e o isolamento resultaram em Pseudomonas aeruginosas e Bacillus sp. Não foram visualizadas estruturas bacterianas compatíveis com bacilo álcool ácido resistente (BAAR). Os resultados confirmam ausência de animais reagentes ao M. bovis, pressupondo inexistência da tuberculose em ovinos na região estudada.

ABSTRACT: In order to know the situation of ovine tuberculosis in Maranhão, Brazil, we evaluated 343 sheep in the southwest region of the state, of both sexes (247 females and 96 males), aged over six months, through the comparative cervical test (TCC), with tuberculin inoculation in the right cervical region. Cranially, avian purified protein derivate (PPD) was injected; and caudally, beef PPD was injected, in individual doses of 0.1 mL. All animals were negative for tuberculosis; however, 65 sheep had higher reactions to bovine tuberculin than to the avian one. To investigate the possibility of low awareness or anergy in animals with advanced tuberculosis, one cachectic sheep was necropsied, aged four years, with negative results for TCC, but with reaction to avian tuberculin and enlarged hardened lymph nodes. The results indicated C. pseudotuberculosis, Actinomyces pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium sp infections. Culture and isolation resulted in Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus sp. No bacterial structures compatible with acid-fast bacteria were found. The results confirmed the absence of animals reactive to M. bovis, assuming no tuberculosis in sheep in the study area.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi traçar os níveis tecnológico e organizacional da cadeia produtiva da bubalinocultura de corte no estado do Maranhão, pesquisando os perfis dos produtores, industriais, distribuidores e consumidores, em relação aos aspectos de produção, tecnologia, gestão e aceitação da carne bubalina. Foram utilizados o método quantitativo para levantamento e análise de dados secundários, o método de natureza qualitativa e a aplicação de questionários. As análises realizadas com base nos dados coletados permitiram determinar algumas características desse segmento, tais como: quantitativo de búfalos para corte, nível de escolaridade dos produtores, tamanho da área de criação, divisão por categoria animal, tipo de exploração, atividades complementares de exploração, raças, identificação animal, sistema de criação, mercado da carne, organização dos custos de produção, usufrutos dos sindicatos e das cooperativas, principais problemas na criação, expansão do mercado, diferenças comparativas com os bovinos, consumo e aceitação da carne para consumo. Conclui-se que a cadeia produtiva da bubalinocultura de corte no estado do Maranhão está em fase de organização, fato que pode ser reestruturado por meio da contribuição e do comprometimento de todos os elos que a constituem.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to establish the technological and organizational level of the production chain of cutting buffaloes in the State of Maranhão, researching the backgrounds of the producers, manufacturers and distributors and consumers in relation to aspects of production, technology, management, and acceptance of the buffaloes meat. We used the quantitative method for collection and analysis of secondary data, the method of qualitative and survey questionnaires. Analyses conducted on the basis of collected data allowed to determine some characteristics of this segment, such as quantitative buffaloes to cut, education level of farmers, size of the breeding area, division by animal category, type of operation, complementary activities of exploration, races, animal identification, breeding system, meat market, organization of production costs, usufruct of unions and cooperatives, the major problems in the creation, market expansion, comparative differences with cattle, meat consumption, and acceptance of meat consumption. We conclude that the productive chain cutting buffaloes in the State of Maranhão is in flux, which can be restructured through the contribution and commitment of all the links that make it up.

RESUMO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as condições higiênico-sanitárias da bebida guaraná da Amazônia comercializada por vendedores ambulantes na cidade de São Luís, Maranhão. Trinta amostras, provenientes de 10 pontos de venda, foram submetidas às seguintes análises microbiológicas: pesquisa de Salmonella spp., quantificação do número mais provável de coliformes a 35°C e a 45°C, enumeração de bactérias aeróbias mesófilas, fungos e estafilococoscoagulase positivos. Em cada ponto de venda avaliado foi aplicado um questionário tipo check-list para verificar as condições higiênicas do local e de preparo do guaraná da Amazônia. Verificaram-se nas amostras os micro-organismos pesquisados, com exceção de Salmonella spp. Foram encontradas contagens elevadas de coliformes a 35ºC (n= 24; 80%) e a 45ºC (n=18; 60%), indicando condições higiênico-sanitárias insatisfatórias das amostras analisadas. Também foram verificadas várias inadequações nos pontos de venda, indicando deficiências higiênicas no preparo da bebida guaraná da Amazônia. Os resultados reforçam a importância de investimentos em programas de qualidade, conscientização e treinamento para os vendedores ambulantes da bebida guaraná da Amazônia na cidade de São Luís, Maranhão.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the hygienic-sanitary conditions of the Amazonian guarana drink sold by street vendors in the city of Sao Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. Thirty samples from 10 outlets were subjected to the following microbiological analysis: Salmonella spp., quantification of the most probable number of coliforms at 35°C and 45°C, enumeration of mesophilic aerobic bacteria, fungi and Staphylococcus coagulase-positive. A check-list questionnaire was administered at each point of sale assessed to check the hygienic conditions of the site and preparation of the drink. Except for Salmonella spp., all microorganisms studied were found in the samples. We found high counts of coliforms at 35ºC (n=24; 80%) and 45°C (n=18; 60%), indicating inadequate sanitary conditions of the samples. Also, there were numerous gaps in retail outlets, indicating impairment in the preparation of the Amazonian guarana drink. The results reinforce the importance of investing in quality programs, awareness and training for street vendors in the city of Sao Luís, Maranhão.

O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de elaborar um diagnóstico dos desafios de adequação à questão ambiental em frigorífcos na cidade de São Luís, Maranhão. Para a realização deste estudo foram efetuadas entrevistas e coletas de amostras de efluente líquido em três frigorífcos que abatem bovi-nos, no período de setembro a dezembro de 2012. Foram anali-sadas também as ações empreendidas e a postura da empresa com relação às questões ambientais. Os impactos ambientais do abate de bovinos na cidade de São Luís, Maranhão, envolve uma série de questões, com destaque para o armazenamento e transporte incor-reto dos resíduos sólidos, alta dependência de água, emissão de efluentes em desconformidade com a legislação vigente e libera-ção de odor fétido. A partir das entrevistas foi possível constatar que as principais limitações das empresas para a sustentabilidade ambiental são a não valorização do meio ambiente e a ausência de uma liderança para defesa e difusão dessa questão. Dessa forma, conclui-se que os frigorífcos na cidade de São Luís, Maranhão, não estão preocupados em manter seu processo produtivo sem causar danos ao meio ambiente.

The present study was performed in order to make a diagnosis of the challenges of adapting to environmental issue in cold storages in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. For this study, interviews were conducted and samples of liquid effluent were collected from three cold storages that slaughter cattle in the period from September to December 2012. We also evaluate the actions undertaken and the company's position regarding environmental issues. Te environmental impacts of cattle slaughter in São Luís, Maranhão, involve a number of issues, especially the incorrect storage and transportation of solid waste, high dependence on water, wastewater emissions in disagreement with the current legislation and the release of aversive odors. From the interviews, it was possible to notice that the main limitations of the company for its environmental sustainability are not to value the environment and the lack of a leadership to defense and disseminate this matter. Tus, we conclude that the cold storages in São Luís, Maranhão, are not concerned with keeping their production process without harming the environment.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi determinar a ocorrência e os fatores de risco associados à identificação da anemia infecciosa equina (AIE) em equídeos de tração na Cidade de São Luís - MA. Amostras de sangue de 154 equídeos apreendidos em vias públicas, pelo Setor de Apreensão de Animais de Tração da Secretaria Municipal de Urbanismo e Habitação, foram coletadas no período de abril a agosto de 2011. Foram analisadas as fichas de atendimento individual para a determinação dos fatores de risco associados a esta enfermidade. Dos animais analisados, 5,20% (8/154) foram positivos. Dentre os fatores de risco avaliados, presença de insetos, permanência dos equídeos em aglomerações por mais de oito horas diárias, condição corporal, estado nutricional, uso repetido de uma mesma agulha entre diferentes equídeos, ocorrência de episódios febris, mucosas amareladas e ausência de conhecimento sobre AIE apresentaram significância estatística (P<0,05) associada à AIE. Os resultados do estudo indicaram que a ocorrência da AIE para equídeos de tração apreendidos na Cidade de São Luís - MA foi baixa. Mesmo assim há a necessidade da realização de diagnóstico sistemático e monitoramento dos animais, além da implantação de medidas de controle, realização de exames sorológicos e implementação da legislação vigente.

The objective of this study was to determine the occurrence and risk factors associated with the identification of equine infectious anemia (EIA) in traction equines in the city of São Luiz - MA. We collected blood samples from 154 equines seized on public roads by the Sector of Animal Traction Seizure of the Municipal Urban Development and Housing Department between April and August of 2011. We analyzed the medical records to determine the individual risk factors associated with this disease. Of the animals tested, 5.20% (8/154) were positive. Among the risk factors evaluated, the presence of insects, permanence of the animals in agglomerations for longer than 8 hours per day, body condition, nutritional status, repeated use of the same needle among different equines, occurrence of febrile episodes, yellowish mucous and lack of knowledge on IEA showed to be statistically significant (P <0.05) associated with the IEA. The study results indicate that the occurrence of the IEA in traction equines in the City of São Luiz - MA was low. Still there is the necessity of systematic diagnosis and monitoring of animals, as well as employment of control measures, serological tests and implementation of current legislation.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar a frequência e os fatores de risco para a infecção pelo vírus da diarreia viral bovina (BVDV) em fêmeas bovinas leiteiras na região amazônica maranhense. Amostras de soro de animais não vacinados contra o BVDV e provenientes de 40 propriedades foram submetidas à técnica de ELISA indireto. Em cada propriedade avaliada, aplicou-se ainda um questionário epidemiológico para investigar os fatores de risco que poderiam estar associados à infecção pelo vírus. As amostras foram coletadas de animais que apresentavam ou não sinais clínicos sugestivos da infecção pelo BVDV. Das 400 amostras de soro analisadas, 61,5% (n=246) foram reagentes com a detecção de bovinos sorologicamente positivos em 95% (n=38) das propriedades. Dentre os fatores de risco avaliados, produção de leite (1-5L), ausência de assistência veterinária, uso de monta natural e monta natural associada à inseminação artificial apresentaram significância estatística (P<0,05) associada à infecção pelo BVDV. Os resultados do estudo indicam que a frequência de anticorpos contra o BVDV foi elevada na região amazônica maranhense e que os fatores relacionados às características das propriedades e ao manejo foram associados ao risco de infecção pelo BVDV.

This study was performed in order to determine the frequency of bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), and the main factors related to the frequency of the infection in dairy cows not vaccinated against BVDV from Maranhense Amazon region. Serum samples were submitted to an indirect ELISA test for detection of BVDV antibodies. An epidemiological questionnaire was applied for each herd to investigate variables that could beassociated with this infection. Serum samples were collected from 40 farms, with or without clinical signs of BVDV infection. From 400 serum samples examined, 61.5% (n=246) in 95% (n=38) of the herds were positive for ELISA. Variables identified as risk factors such as milk production (1-5L), absence of veterinary assistance, use of natural breeding or natural breeding associated with artificial insemination. These risk factors presented statistical significance (P<0.05) associated to BVDV infection. These results indicate that BVDV infection is high in the studied region and that factors related to the herd characteristic and management were associated with the risk of infection by BVDV.
