Abstract It is repeatedly stressed the need to characterize the extant biodiversity in tropical ecosystems. However, inventory studies are still progressing slowly in dry ecosystems, leading to the underestimation of their true biodiversity and hindering conservation efforts. In this study, we present primary and secondary data, along with an updated list of amphibians and reptiles from two localities in the São Francisco-Gurguéia region in Piauí. Additionally, we compare the species composition between nine areas within the Caatinga, which were sampled using standardized methods over the past ten years, to examine broader spatial patterns of community composition. To survey reptiles and amphibians, we employed similar methods and sampling efforts in two areas within the Serra das Confusões National Park (SCNP) region. Our surveys recorded a total of 73 species of amphibians and reptiles, of which 24 are new distribution records for the SCNP region. Consequently, our findings increase the known herpetofauna in the region to 94 species. Despite their proximity, the two sites in the SCNP region exhibited only 42% similarity in species composition, and they differed significantly from other areas within the Caatinga. Furthermore, even the closer Caatinga areas presented differences in species composition, highlighting the necessity to evaluate biodiversity across the landscape and contribute to understanding biogeographic patterns.

ABSTRACT Phosphorus concentration is one of the main attributes determined in laboratory analyses of soil samples collected in the field. The objective is to develop a soil phosphorus test using a low-cost spectrophotometer and a machine learning technique. For reflectance measurements, a low-cost system consisting of a Sparkfun AS7625x spectrophotometer and an Arduino Uno is used. Ion exchange resins under standard saturated solutions and modified conditions are used to extract phosphorus ions from the soil samples. Reflectance and phosphorus concentrations determined by the reference method are used in the training and testing of a machine learning. A modification procedure of the ion-exchange resin saturation solution allows the establishment of a strong correlation between the reflectance in 18 spectral bands and P concentration of the soil samples. The obtained model uses five reflectance of the modified resins at wavelengths of 410, 460, 560, 705, and 645 nm to predict the phosphorus concentration. This model presents an R2t accuracy of 0.97 in the training stage with an R2v of 0.96, RMSEv of 9.05, and ratio of prediction to deviation) of 3.81 in the test step.

ABSTRACT The plant water potential and the leaf temperature are physiological responses of the coffee tree that can be used as indicative of the irrigation management of this crop. There is a dependence between the leaf water potential with the potential matrix of the soil solution, however, the water potential levels found for the coffee tree show divergent relationships in the literature regarding the matrix potential. The objective of this study is to verify the water potential and leaf surface temperature in the coffee tree when submitted to different irrigation levels. The study was conducted in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, using Coffea arabica species from Red Catuaí IAC 144 variety, the drip irrigation system was adopted and the management done by tensiometry. The relationships among these physiological responses and the treatments of actions presented high determination coefficients (R2 of 0.84, 0.90 and 0.65 for the leaf water potential, leaf temperature measured with the portable infrared sensor and the thermal camera respectively). The estimated values for leaf water potential were −0.23, −0.56, −0.89 and −1.22 MPa for irrigation treatments L130%, L100%, L70% and L40%, respectively. The calculated leaf temperature values were 31.7, 32.4, 33.0 and 33.7°C in average, for treatments L130%, L100%, L70% and L40% in proper order.

The finite element method has been employed in the machine design, as well as to study the dynamic behavior of the coffee plant or its parts. The objective of this study was to determine the geometric, physical and mechanical properties of coffee fruit-stem-branch system. The dimensions were determined by image processing, the masses and volumes measured using weighing-machine and graduated cylinder, respectively. The modulus of elasticity was determined by compression, tension and bending mechanical tests for fruits, stems and branches, respectively. The Poisson's ratio was determined using the longitudinal and transversal deformation of the fruits and stems. The damping ratio was determined by the decay curves using the logarithmic decrement method. It was concluded that the fruit dimensions and mass showed a tendency to increase with mature stage evolution. The modulus of elasticity for fruit and stems in green (cherry) stage was higher than the values for the mature stage.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of water and thermal stress on the germination and vigor of carrot seeds. Two experiments were performed in the Universidade Federal de Viçosa; three lots of carrot seeds were used, lot 1 of cv. "Carandaí " and the lots 2 and 3 of cv. "Brasília ". In experiment 1 - Water stress - Four osmotic potentials, 0.0; -0.3; -0.6 and -0.9 MPa were used to humidify the paper substratum, with a solution of PEG 6000 in concentrations of 0; 17.16; 25.68 and 32.16 g L-1. Germination and vigor were estimated. For experiment 2 - Thermal stress - Three temperatures were used, 15°, 20° and 35° C, to evaluate the quality of the seeds. It A paper towel humidified with water was used as substratum, in the proportion of 2.5 times the weight of the paper. It is concluded that the germination of the carrot seeds was not affected by potentials of -0.3 MPa. The length of the roots and the first germination count were efficient to evaluate the vigor of the carrot seeds, under water and thermal stress, allowing the classification of the tested lots. Temperatures of 15° and 35° C influenced the germination and the vigor of the carrot seeds negatively.

The purpose of this study was to analyze sharpshooter fauna in a five-year-old 'Westin' sweet orange orchard. Yellow sticky traps were placed on the edge of a forest, and on the periphery and inside the citrus stand. The traps were evaluated fortnightly, for three years. The most frequent species were Acrogonia citrina Marucci & Cavichioli, Bucephalogonia xanthophis (Berg), and Oncometopia facialis (Signoret). B. xanthophis occurred more in the forest edge, especially on spring and winter. A. citrina occurred most frequently in the forest edge, especially on spring. The highest incidence of O. facialis was inside the citrus stand, on spring and summer. Other cicadellids occurred more often in the forest edge, especially on summer. A. citrina, B. xanthophis, Dilobopterus costalimai Young, and O. facialis were predominant in all places studied. A. citrina, B. xanthophis and O. facialis were super dominant, super abundant, super frequent, and constant, except inside the stand, where B. xanthophis was dominant, very abundant, very frequent, and constant. D. costalimai and Homalodisca ignorata Melichar were dominant, very abundant, and very frequent in the forest edge and in the periphery of the stand, and D. costalimai was also predominant inside the stand. Scopogonalia subolivacea (Stål) was predominant in the forest edge and inside the stand, while Plesiommata corniculata Young was predominant in the periphery (both were dominant, very abundant, very frequent, and accessory).

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM is a strain present in several probiotic products. Despite its wide use, there is little information on its translocation to the host's organs. This work was devised to verify the Lactobacillus spp. translocation in rats feeding cholesterol rich diet because this product has been indicated as dietary adjunct for individuals hipercholesterolemic. One hundred and thirty weaned Wistar rats, divided in 4 groups and caged individually were used. The experimental groups were: Standard; Control; LDR and P. The Standard group received the AIN-93G diet during the whole experimental period (42 days). The other groups received the AIN-93G diet added of 1% of cholesterol and 0,1% of cholic acid. During 14 days, the LDR group received the supplement of 0,1mL/day/animal of reconstituted skimmed milk at 10% of non fat solids and, the group P received 0,1mL/day/animal of a probiotic in the form of a concentrate of cells contends 10(10) UFC/mL of Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM. Translocation was observed in spleen, heart, liver and kidneys of group P, but not in the others. The average translocation were UFC/órgão: spleen (8,6 x 10²); liver (4,8 x 10²); heart (4,7 x 10²) and kidney (1,3 x 10²). The translocated cell numbers, beside being low, were constantly eliminated during the evaluation period. Since the implication of microbial translocation in the host is not known, the translocation capacity and the rats of clearing are suggested to be important parameters for the selection of strains to be used as probiotics.

Schneider's Drosophila medium, a complex amino acid rich medium was tested alone and with seven different sugars for some aspects of the biology of Lutzomyia longipalpis. Statistically significant results were obtained when sucrose was used alone, indicating that among the sugars tested, this is still the most suitable and practical one for the maintenance of L. longipalpis colonies. However, the addition of Schneider's medium to a pool of different sugars, was suggested to be related with the acceptance of the first and second blood meals and to longevity, these being, obviously, quite relevant aspects when tansmission experiments are contemplated.
